In this expository article, we consider first order elliptic differential operators acting on smooth vector bundles over compact manifolds, and certain invariants derived from the analysis of these operators, namely the eta invariant} and the equivariant index. Many researchers have previously considered these invariants before. What makes this work different is that we are evaluating integer-valued indices corresponding to multiplicities of group representations, and our eta invariant is a number dependent on the entire group at once. Moreover, the techniques of proof and formulas obtained are new and depend on equivariant heat asymptotics that may involve logarithmic terms. For simplicity, we consider only elliptic differential operators, even though the proofs outlined apply to transversally elliptic operators. In every case, we outline the well-known proofs and theorems without Lie group actions first and then show how these same ideas can be applied in the equivariant cases with appropriate modifications. A more detailed and expanded article that applies to transversally elliptic operators will appear in due time.
In this expository paper, we explain a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications is an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years. This paper summarizes the work in the papers arXiv:1005.3845 [math.DG] and arXiv:1008.1757 [math.DG].
Let G be a connected compact Lie group acting on a manifold M and let D be a transversally elliptic operator on M. The multiplicity of the index of D is a function on the set of irreducible representations of G. Let T be a maximal torus of G with Lie algebra Lie(T). We construct a finite number of piecewise polynomial functions on the dual vector space Lie(T)*, and give a formula for the multiplicity in term of these functions. The main new concept is the formal equivariant $\hat A$ class.
Let M be a spin manifold with a circular action. Given an elliptic curve E, we introduce, as in Grojnowski, elliptic bouquets of germs of holomorphic equivariant cohomology classes on M. Following Bott-Taubes and Rosu, we show that integration of an elliptic bouquet is well defined. In particular, this imply Witten's rigidity theorem. We emphasize the similarity between integration in K-theory and in elliptic cohomology.
In this note the fractional analytic index, for a projective elliptic operator associated to an Azumaya bundle, of DG/0402329 is related to the equivariant index of Atiyah and Singer for an associated transversally elliptic operator.
We will discuss the equivariant cohomology of a manifold endowed with the action of a Lie group. Localization formulae for equivariant integrals are explained by a vanishing theorem for equivariant cohomology with generalized coefficients. We then give applications to integration of characteristic classes on symplectic quotients and to indices of transversally elliptic operators. In particular, we state a conjecture for the index of a transversally elliptic operator linked to a Hamiltonian action. In the last part, we describe algorithms for numerical computations of values of multivariate spl…
Given an elliptic action of a compact Lie group $G$ on a co-oriented contact manifold $(M,E)$ one obtains two naturally associated objects: A $G$-transversally elliptic operator $\dirac$, and an equivariant differential form with generalised coefficients $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ defined in terms of a choice of contact form on $M$. We explain how the form $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ is natural with respect to the contact structure, and give a formula for the equivariant index of $\dirac$ involving $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$. A key tool is the Chern character with compact support developed by Paradan-Vergne \cite{PV1,…
The space of Fredholm operators of fixed index is stratified by submanifolds according to the dimension of the kernel. Geometric considerations often lead to questions about the intersections of concrete families of elliptic operators with these submanifolds: are the intersections non-empty? are they smooth? what are their codimensions? The purpose of this article is to develop tools to address these questions in equivariant situations. An important motivation for this work are transversality questions for multiple covers of $J$-holomorphic maps. As an application, we use our framework to give…
We prove a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications, we obtain an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years.
We introduce a new class of natural, explicitly defined, transversally elliptic differential operators over manifolds with compact group actions. Under certain assumptions, the symbols of these operators generate all the possible values of the equivariant index. We also show that the components of the representation-valued equivariant index coincide with those of an elliptic operator constructed from the original data.
We construct a global geometric model for complex analytic equivariant elliptic cohomology for all compact Lie groups. Cocycles are specified by functions on the space of fields of the two-dimensional sigma model with background gauge fields and $\mathcal{N} = (0, 1)$ supersymmetry. We also consider a theory of free fermions valued in a representation whose partition function is a section of a determinant line bundle. We identify this section with a cocycle representative of the (twisted) equivariant elliptic Euler class of the representation. Finally, we show that the moduli stack of $U(1)$-g…
These notes form the next episode in a series of articles dedicated to a detailed proof of a cohomological index formula for transversally elliptic pseudo-differential operators and applications. The first two chapters are already available as math.DG/0702575 and arXiv:0711.3898. In this episode, we construct the relative equivariant Chern character of a morphism of vector bundles, localized by a one form, and we prove a multiplicativity property of this generalized Chern character
We construct geometric generators of the effective $S^1$-equivariant Spin- (and oriented) bordism groups with two inverted. We apply this construction to the question of which $S^1$-manifolds admit invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature. It turns out that, up to taking connected sums with several copies of the same manifold, the only obstruction to the existence of such a metric is an $\hat{A}$-genus of orbit spaces. This $\hat{A}$-genus generalizes a previous definition of Lott for orbit spaces of semi-free $S^1$-actions. As a further application of our results, we give a new proof of…
In this short note we prove that in the case of elliptic curves, the isomorphism of generalized complex structure between $T$-dual manifolds described by Cavalcanti-Gualtieri coincides with the mirror map for elliptic curves described by Polishchuk and Zaslow.
From 1980s, it is an open problem of proposing cohomologic formula for the basic index of a transversally elliptic basic differential operator on a vector bundle over a foliated manifold. In 1990s, El Kacimi-Alaoui has proprosed to use the Molino theory for study this index. Molino has proved that to every transversally oriented Riemannien foliation, we can associate a manifold, called basique manifold, which is équiped with an action of orthogonal group, El Kacimi-Alaoui has shown how to associate a transversally elliptic basic differential operator an operator on a vector bundle, called usef…
In this paper, we construct for the first time the projective elliptic genera for a compact oriented manifold equipped with a projective complex vector bundle. Such projective elliptic genera are rational q-series that have topological definition and also have analytic interpretation via the fractional index theorem in Mathai-Melrose-Singer (2006) without requiring spin condition. We prove the modularity properties of these projective elliptic genera. As an application, we construct elliptic pseudodifferential genera for any elliptic pseudodifferential operator. This suggests the existence of …
Let $G$ be a connected compact Lie group. We study the heat operator of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator. After we review the spectral properties of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator, we define the character, that is a distribution on $G$ generalizing the trace of the heat operator to the $G$-equivariant case. The main theorem of this paper gives the estimate of $f_α(t)$, which essentially determines the convergence of the character.
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
A notion of equivariant spectral flows for families of self-dual elliptic operators on Riemannian manifolds is purposed. As a consequence, a local version of a Lefschetz fix point theorem is proved for Toeplitz operators on odd-dimensional spin manifolds.

Mathai, Melrose, and Singer introduced the notion of projective elliptic operators on manifolds equipped with an Azumaya bundle. In this note we compute the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators that are the pullback of projective elliptic operators on the trivialization of the Azumaya bundle. It encompasses the fractional index formula of projective elliptic operator by Mathai-Melrose-Singer.
We generalize A. Borbély's condition for the conclusion of the Omori-Yau maximum principle for the Laplace operator on a complete Riemannian manifold to a second-order linear semi-elliptic operator $L$ with bounded coefficients and no zeroth order term. Also, we consider a new sufficient condition for the existence of a tamed exhaustion function. As a corollary, we show that the existence of a tamed exhaustion function is more general than the hypotheses in the version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle that was given by A. Ratto, M. Rigoli and A.G. Setti.
We compute the equivariant elliptic genera of several classes of ALE and ALF manifolds using localization in gauged linear sigma models. In the sigma model computation the equivariant action corresponds to chemical potentials for U(1) currents and the elliptic genera exhibit interesting pole structure as a function of the chemical potentials. We use this to decompose the answers into polar terms that exhibit wall crossing and universal terms. We compare our results to previous results on the large radius limit of the Taub-NUT elliptic genus and also discuss applications of our results to count…

In this paper, we consider the principal eigenvalue problem for Hormander's laplacian on $R^n$. We also study a related semi-linear sub-elliptic equation in the whole $R^n$ and prove that under a suitable condition, we have infinite many positive solutions of the problem.
In 1996, Berline and Vergne gave a cohomological formula for the index of a transversally elliptic operator. In this paper we propose a new point of view where the cohomological formulae make use of equivariant Chern characters with generalized coefficients and with compact suppport. This kind of Chern characters was studied by the authors in a previous paper (see arXiv:0801.2822).
We apply an equivariant version of Perelman's Ricci flow with surgery to study smooth actions by finite groups on closed 3-manifolds. Our main result is that such actions on elliptic and hyperbolic 3-manifolds are conjugate to isometric actions. Combining our results with results by Meeks and Scott [17], it follows that such actions on geometric 3-manifolds (in the sense of Thurston) are always geometric, i.e. there exist invariant locally homogeneous Riemannian metrics. This answers a question posed by Thurston in [32].
We consider a consider the case of a compact manifold M, together with the following data: the action of a compact Lie group H and a smooth H-invariant distribution E, such that the H-orbits are transverse to E. These data determine a natural equivariant differential form with generalized coefficients J(E,X) whose properties we describe. When E is equipped with a complex structure, we define a class of symbol mappings in terms of the resulting almost-CR structure that are H-transversally elliptic whenever the action of H is transverse to E. We determine a formula for the H-equivariant index of…
