Elliptic operators on infinite graphs

We present some applications of ideas from partial differential equations and differential geometry to the study of difference equations on infinite graphs. All operators that we consider are examples of "elliptic operators" as defined by Y. Colin de Verdiere. For such operators, we discuss analogs of inequalities of Cheeger and Harnack and of the maximum principle (in both elliptic and parabolic versions), and apply them to study spectral theory, the ground state and the heat semigroup associated to these operators.

Ellipticity and Fredholmness of pseudo-differential operators on $\ell^2(\Zn)$

The minimal operator and the maximal operator of an elliptic pseudo-differential operator with symbols on $\Z^n\times \mathbb{T}^n$ are proved to coincide and the domain is given in terms of a Sobolev space. Ellipticity and Fredholmness are proved to be equivalent for pseudo-differential operators on $\Z^n$. The index of an elliptic pseudo-differential operator on $\Z^n$ is also computed.

On families of optimal Hardy-weights for linear second-order elliptic operators

We construct families of optimal Hardy-weights for a subcritical linear second-order elliptic operator using a one-dimensional reduction. More precisely, we first characterise all optimal Hardy-weights with respect to one-dimensional subcritical Sturm-Liouville operators on a given interval, and then apply this result to obtain families of optimal Hardy inequalities for general linear second-order elliptic operators in higher dimensions. As an application, we prove a new Rellich inequality.

We discuss the band-gap structure and the integrated density of states for periodic elliptic operators in the Hilbert space $L_2(\R^m)$, for $m \ge 2$. We specifically consider situations where high contrast in the coefficients leads to weak coupling between the period cells. Sharp boundary estimates for elliptic operators

We prove sharp L^2 boundary decay estimates for the eigenfunctions of certain second order elliptic operators acting in a bounded region, and of their first order space derivatives, using only the Hardy inequality. We then deduce bounds on the change of the eigenvalues when the region is reduced slightly in size, subject to DBCs.
