Consider an n-dimensional projective toric variety X defined by a convex lattice polytope P. David Cox introduced the toric residue map given by a collection of n+1 divisors Z_0,...,Z_n on X. In the case when the Z_i are T-invariant divisors whose sum is X\T the toric residue map is the multiplication by an integer number. We show that this number is the degree of a certain map from the boundary of the polytope P to the boundary of a simplex. This degree can be computed combinatorially.
We also study radical monomial ideals I of the homogeneous coordinate ring of X. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a homogeneous polynomial of semiample degree to belong to I in terms of geometry of toric varieties and combinatorics of fans.
Both results have applications to the problem of constructing an element of residue one for semiample degrees.
We generalize the toric residue mirror conjecture of Batyrev and Materov to not necessarily reflexive polytopes. Using this generalization we prove the toric residue mirror conjecture for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties.
Building on our earlier work on toric residues and reduction, we give a proof for the mixed toric residue conejecture of Batyrev and Materov. We simplify and streamline our technique of tropical degenerations, which allows one to interpolate between two localization principles: one appearing in the intersection theory toric quotients and the other in the calculus of toric residues. This quickly leads to the proof of the conjecture, which gives a closed form for the summation of a generating series whose coefficients are certain variants of the "numbers" of rational curves on toric complete int…
We study residues on a complete toric variety X, which are defined in terms of the homogeneous coordinate ring of X. We first prove a global transformation law for toric residues. When the fan of the toric variety has a simplicial cone of maximal dimension, we can produce an element with toric residue equal to 1. We also show that in certain situations, the toric residue is an isomorphism on an appropriate graded piece of the quotient ring. When X is simplicial, we prove that the toric residue is a sum of local residues. In the case of equal degrees, we also show how to represent X as a quotie…
Using Cayley trick, we define the notions of mixed toric residues and mixed Hessians associated with $r$ Laurent polynomials $f_1,...,f_r$.We conjecture that the values of mixed toric residues on the mixed Hessians are determined by mixed volumes of the Newton polytopes of $f_1,...,f_r$. Using mixed toric residues, we generalize our Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture to the case of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties obtained from nef-partitions of reflexive polytopes.
We present an explicit formula for computing toric residues as a quotient of two determinants, a la Macaulay, where the numerator is a minor of the denominator. We also give an irreducible representation of toric residues by extending the theory of subresultants to monomials of critical degree in the homogeneous coordinate ring of the corresponding toric variety.
In ${\bf C}^{n+1}$, one can show that the residue of $n+1$ homogeneous forms of the same degree equals the integral of a certain $(n,n)$ form over ${\bf P}^n$. Furthermore, the Jacobian of the forms has nonzero residue equal to a certain intersection number. In this paper, we generalize these results to an arbitrary projective toric variety. In particular, we define a toric version of the Jacobian and show that it has the correct properties, and we give various integral formulas for the toric residue. We also review some commutative algebra results of Batyrev and Danilov and discuss the relati…
We develop some ideas of Morrison and Plesser and formulate a precise mathematical conjecture which has close relations to toric mirror symmetry. Our conjecture, we call it Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture, claims that the generating functions of intersection numbers of divisors on a special sequence of simplicial toric varieties are power series expansions of some rational functions obtained as toric residues. We expect that this conjecture holds true for all Gorenstein toric Fano varieties associated with reflexive polytopes and give some evidences for that. The proposed conjecture suggests a…
Resultants, Jacobians and residues are basic invariants of multivariate polynomial systems. We examine their interrelations in the context of toric geometry. The global residue in the torus, studied by Khovanskii, is the sum over local Grothendieck residues at the zeros of $n$ Laurent polynomials in $n$ variables. Cox introduced the related notion of the toric residue relative to $n+1$ divisors on an $n$-dimensional toric variety. We establish denominator formulas in terms of sparse resultants for both the toric residue and the global residue in the torus. A byproduct is a determinantal formul…
The paper consist of two parts. In the first part we introduce flags of lattices and associated injective systems of (non-normal) cones and projective systems of (non-normal) affine toric varieties. We study the associated field of multidimensional Laurent power series. In the second part we use the resolution of singularities techniques to study the geometry near a complete flag of subvarieties and the Parshin's residues. The first part plays the role of a standard coordinate neighborhood for Parshin's points.
In this paper, we give explicit combinatorial descriptions for toric extremal contractions under the relative setting, where varieties do not need to be complete. Fujino's completion theorem is the key to the main result. As applications, we can generalize some of Mustata's results related to Fujita's conjecture on toric varieties for the relative case.
The toric residue is a map depending on n+1 semi-ample divisors on a complete toric variety of dimension n. It appears in a variety of contexts such as sparse polynomial systems, mirror symmetry, and GKZ hypergeometric functions. In this paper we investigate the problem of finding an explicit element whose toric residue is equal to one. Such an element is shown to exist if and only if the associated polytopes are essential. We reduce the problem to finding a collection of partitions of the lattice points in the polytopes satisfying a certain combinatorial property. We use this description to s…
As an alternative to the description of a toric variety by a fan in the lattice of one parameter subgroups, we present a new language in terms of what we call bunches -- these are certain collections of cones in the vector space of rational divisor classes. The correspondence between these bunches and fans is based on classical Gale duality. The new combinatorial language allows a much more natural description of geometric phenomena around divisors of toric varieties than the usual method by fans does. For example, the numerically effective cone and the ample cone of a toric variety can be rea…
The Gelfond-Khovanskii residue formula computes the sum of the values of any Laurent polynomial over solutions of a system of Laurent polynomial equations whose Newton polytopes have sufficiently general relative position. We discuss two important consequences of this result: an explicit elimination algorithm for such systems and a new formula for the mixed volume. The integer coefficients that appear in the Gelfond-Khovanskii residue formula are geometric invariants that depend only on combinatorics of the polytopes. We explain how to compute them explicitly.
We interpret the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz of Noga Alon as a multidimensional residue formula, describe some consequences of this interpretation and related open problems.
The $k$-secant degree is studied with a combinatorial approach. A planar toric degeneration of any projective toric surface $X$ corresponds to a regular unimodular triangulation $D$ of the polytope defining $X$. If the secant ideal of the initial ideal with respect to $D$ coincides with the initial ideal of the secant ideal, then $D$ is said to be delightful and the $k$-secant degree of $X$ can be easily computed. All delightful triangulations of toric surfaces having sectional genus $g\leq1$ are completely classified and, for $g\geq2$, a lower bound for the $2$- and $3$-secant degree, by mean…
We show that very general hypersurfaces in odd-dimensional simplicial projective toric varieties verifying a certain combinatorial property satisfy the Hodge conjecture (these include projective spaces). This gives a connection between the Oda conjecture and Hodge conjecture. We also give an explicit criterion which depends on the degree for very general hypersurfaces for the combinatorial condition to be verified.
From a finite set in a lattice, we can define a toric variety embedded in a projective space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the dual defect of the toric variety using the structure of the finite set as a Cayley sum with suitable conditions. We also interpret the description geometrically.
The main purpose of this paper is to give a simple and non-combinatorial proof of the toric Mori theory. Here, the toric Mori theory means the (log) Minimal Model Program (MMP, for short) for toric varieties. We minimize the arguments on fans and their decompositions. We recommend this paper to the following people: (A) those who are uncomfortable with manipulating fans and their decompositions, (B) those who are familiar with toric geometry but not with the MMP. People in the category (A) will be relieved from tedious combinatorial arguments in several problems. Those in the category (B) will…
We give a simple combinatorial proof of the toric version of Mori's theorem that the only $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties with ample tangent bundle are the projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^n$.
This paper proposes some material towards a theory of general toric varieties without the assumption of normality. Their combinatorial description involves a fan to which is attached a set of semigroups subjected to gluing-up conditions. In particular it contains a combinatorial construction of the blowing up of a sheaf of monomial ideals on a toric variety. In the second part it is shown that over an algebraically closed base field of zero characteristic the Semple-Nash modification of a general toric variety is isomorphic to the blowing up of the sheaf of logarithmic jacobian ideals and that…
We present a new integration formula for intersection numbers on toric quotients, extending the results of Witten, Jeffrey and Kirwan on localization. Our work was motivated by the Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture of Batyrev and Materov; as an application of our integration formula, we obtain a proof of this conjecture in a generalized setting.
We provide a combinatorial characterization of monomial linear systems on toric varieties whose general member is quasismooth. This is given both in terms of the Newton polytope and in terms of the matrix of exponents of a monomial basis.
Toric log del Pezzo surfaces correspond to convex lattice polygons containing the origin in their interior and having only primitive vertices. An upper bound on the volume and on the number of boundary lattice points of these polygons is derived in terms of the index l. Techniques for classifying these polygons are also described: a direct classification for index two is given, and a classification for all l<17 is obtained.
The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit formula which allows one to compute the dimension of the cohomology groups of the sheaf $Ω_¶^p(D)$ of p-th differential forms of Zariski twisted by an ample invertible sheaf on a complete simplicial toric variety. The formula involves some combinatorial sums of integer points over all faces of the support polytope for ${Ø_X}(D)$. We also introduce a new combinatorial object, the so-called p-th Hilbert-Erhart polynomial, which generalizes the usual notion and behaves similar. Namely, there exists a generalization of the inversion law for a usual …
We present a combinatorial criterion on reflexive polytopes of dimension 3 which gives a local-to-global obstruction for the smoothability of the corresponding Fano toric threefolds. As a result, we show examples of singular Gorenstein Fano toric threefolds which have compound Du Val, hence smoothable, singularities but are not smoothable.
We show that any smooth lattice polytope P with codegree greater or equal than (dim(P)+3)/2 (or equivalently, with degree smaller than dim(P)/2), defines a dual defective projective toric manifold. This implies that P is Q-normal (in the terminology of a recent paper by Di Rocco, Piene and the first author) and answers partially an adjunction-theoretic conjecture by Beltrametti and Sommese. Also, it follows that smooth lattice polytopes with this property are precisely strict Cayley polytopes, which completes the answer of a question of Batyrev and the second author in the nonsingular case.
We give a combinatorial way to locate non-displaceable Lagrangian toric fibers on compact toric manifolds. By taking the intersection of certain tropicalizations coming from combinatorial data of a moment polytope, we locate all strongly bulk-balanced fibers introduced in [FOOOSurv]. As an application, we show that every bulk-balanced fiber defined in [FOOOToric2] is strongly bulk-balanced. Thus, the method indeed detects the positions of all non-displaceable fibers that can be detected by Lagrangian Floer theory developed in [FOOOToric1] and [FOOOToric2].
We investigate Gorenstein toric Fano varieties by combinatorial methods using the notion of a reflexive polytope which appeared in connection to mirror symmetry. The paper contains generalisations of tools and previously known results for nonsingular toric Fano varieties. As applications we obtain new classification results, bounds of invariants and formulate conjectures concerning combinatorial and geometrical properties of reflexive polytopes.
We use residue currents on toric varieties to obtain bounds on the degrees of solutions to polynomial ideal membership problems. Our bounds depend on (the volume of) the Newton polytope of the polynomial system and are therefore well adjusted to sparse polynomial systems. We present sparse versions of Max Nöther's $AF+BG$ Theorem, Macaulay's Theorem, and Kollár's Effective Nullstellensatz, as well as recent results by Hickel and Andersson-Götmark.
There is a well developed intersection theory on smooth Artin stacks with quasi-affine diagonal. However, for Artin stacks whose diagonal is not quasi-finite the notion of the degree of a Chow cycle is not defined. In this paper we propose a definition for the degree of a cycle on Artin toric stacks whose underlying toric varieties are complete. As an application we define the Euler characteristic of an Artin toric stack with complete good moduli space - extending the definition of the orbifold Euler characteristic. An explicit combinatorial formula is given for 3-dimensional Artin toric stack…
Let $X$ be a complete $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial toric variety. We explicitly describe the space $H^2(X,T_X)$ and the cup product map $H^1(X,T_X)\times H^1(X,T_X)\to H^2(X,T_X)$ in combinatorial terms. Using this, we give an example of a smooth projective toric threefold for which the cup product map does not vanish, showing that in general, smooth complete toric varieties may have obstructed deformations.
We use localization to describe the restriction map from equivariant Chow cohomology to ordinary Chow cohomology for complete toric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions and Minkowski weights. We compute examples showing that this map is not surjective in general, and that its kernel is not always generated in degree one. We prove a localization formula for mixed volumes of lattice polytopes and, more generally, a Bott residue formula for toric vector bundles.
Let $Δ$ be a $3$-dimensional lattice polytope containing exactly one interior lattice point. We give a simple combinatorial formula for computing the stringy $E$-function of the $3$-dimensional canonical toric Fano variety $X_Δ$ associated with the polytope $Δ$. Using the stringy Libgober-Wood identity and our formula, we generalize the well-known combinatorial identity $\sum_{θ\preceq Δ\atop \dim (θ) =1} v(θ) \cdot v(θ^*) = 24$ holding in the case of $3$-dimensional reflexive polytopes $Δ$.
We describe in purely combinatorial terms dual pairs of integral affine structures on spheres which come from the conjectural metric collapse of mirror families of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. The same structures arise on the base of a special Lagrangian torus fibration in the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We study the topological torus fibration in the large complex structure limit and show that it coincides with our combinatorial model.
We initiate a combinatorial study of Newton-Okounkov functions on toric varieties with an eye on the rationality of asymptotic invariants of line bundles. In the course of our efforts we identify a combinatorial condition which ensures a controlled behavior of the appropriate Newton-Okounkov function on a toric surface. Our approach yields the rationality of many Seshadri constants that have not been settled before.
We give a bound of $k$ for a very ample lattice polytope to be $k$-normal. Equivalently, we give a new combinatorial bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of normal projective toric varieties.
We characterise and investigate co-Higgs sheaves and associated algebraic and combinatorial invariants on toric varieties. In particular, we compute explicit examples.
We review the theory of combinatorial intersection cohomology of fans developed by Barthel-Brasselet-Fieseler-Kaup, Bressler-Lunts, and Karu. This theory gives a substitute for the intersection cohomology of toric varieties which has all the expected formal properties but makes sense even for non-rational fans, which do not define a toric variety. As a result, a number of interesting results on the toric $g$ and $h$ polynomials have been extended from rational polytopes to general polytopes. We present explicit complexes computing the combinatorial IH in degrees one and two; the degree two com…
Topological invariants such as characteristic classes are an important tool to aid in understanding and categorizing the structure and properties of algebraic varieties. In this note we consider the problem of computing a particular characteristic class, the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class, of a complete simplicial toric variety X defined by a fan from the combinatorial data contained in the fan. Specifically, we give an effective combinatorial algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of X, in the Chow ring (or rational Chow ring) of X. This method is formulated by combining, a…
We define Q-normal lattice polytopes. Natural examples of such polytopes are Cayley sums of strictly combinatorially equivalent lattice polytopes, which correspond to particularly nice toric fibrations, namely toric projective bundles. In a recent paper Batyrev and Nill have suggested that there should be a bound, N(d), such that every lattice polytope of degree d and dimension at least N(d) decomposes as a Cayley sum. We give a sharp answer to this question for smooth Q-normal polytopes. We show that any smooth Q-normal lattice polytope P of dimension n and degree d is a Cayley sum of strictl…
A combinatorial construction is used to analyze the properties of polyhedral products and generalized moment-angle complexes with respect to certain operations on CW pairs including exponentiation. This allows for the construction of infinite families of toric manifolds, associated to a given one, in a way which simplifies the combinatorial input and consequently, the presentation of the cohomology rings. The new input is the interaction of a purely combinatorial construction with natural associated geometric constructions related to polyhedral products and toric manifolds. Applications of the…
This paper studies two related subjects. One is some combinatorics arising from linear projections of polytopes and fans of cones. The other is quotient varieties of toric varieties. The relation is that projections of polytopes are related to quotients of projective toric varieties and projection of fans are related to quotients of general toric varieties. Despite its relation to geometry the first part is purely combinatorial and should be of interest in its own right.
