We give a survey of how the relatively young theory of operator spaces has led to a deeper understanding of the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group (and of related algebras).
We provide a survey of the similarities and differences between Banach and Frechet algebras including some known results and examples. We also collect some important generalizations in abstract harmonic analysis; for example, the generalization of the concepts of vector-valued Lipschitz algebras, abstract Segal algebras, Arens regularity, amenability, weak amenability, ideal amenability, etc.
The notions of column and row operator space were extended by A. Lambert from Hilbert spaces to general Banach spaces. In this paper, we use column and row spaces over quotients of subspaces of general $L_p$-spaces to equip several Banach algebras occurring naturally in abstract harmonic analysis with canonical, yet not obvious operator space structures that turn them into completely bounded Banach algebras. We use these operator space structures to gain new insights on those algebras.
We consider operators acting on a UMD Banach lattice $X$ that have the same algebraic structure as the position and momentum operators associated with the harmonic oscillator $-\frac12Δ+ \frac12|x|^{2} $ acting on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. More precisely, we consider abstract harmonic oscillators of the form $\frac12 \sum _{j=1} ^{d}(A_{j}^{2}+B_{j}^{2})$ for tuples of operators $A=(A_{j})_{j=1} ^{d}$ and $B=(B_{k})_{k=1} ^{d}$, where $iA_j$ and $iB_k$ are assumed to generate $C_{0}$ groups and to satisfy the canonical commutator relations. We prove functional calculus results for these abstrac…
Analytic properties of right topological groups have been extensively studied in the compact admissible case (i.e when the group has a dense topological center). This was inspired by the existence of a Haar measure on such groups. In this paper, we broaden the scope of this work. We give (similar) sufficient conditions for the existence of a Haar measure on locally compact right topological groups and generalize analytic theory to this setting. We then define new measure algebra analogues in the compact setting and use these to completely characterize the existence of a Haar measure, producing…
We use methods of harmonic analysis and group representation theory to study the spectral properties of the abstract parabolic operator $\mathscr L = -d/dt+A$ in homogeneous function spaces. We provide sufficient conditions for invertibility of such operators in terms of the spectral properties of the operator $A$ and the semigroup generated by $A$. We introduce a homogeneous space of functions with absolutely summable spectrum and prove a generalization of the Gearhart-Prüss Theorem for such spaces. We use the results to prove existence and uniqueness of solutions of a certain class of non-li…
In this article, we give an abstract characterization of the ``identity'' of an operator space $V$ by looking at a quantity $n_{cb}(V,u)$ which is defined in analogue to a well-known quantity in Banach space theory. More precisely, we show that there exists a complete isometry from $V$ to some $\mathcal{L}(H)$ sending $u$ to ${\rm id}_H$ if and only if $n_{cb}(V,u) =1$. We will use it to give an abstract characterization of operator systems. Moreover, we will show that if $V$ is a unital operator space and $W$ is a proper complete $M$-ideal, then $V/W$ is also a unital operator space. As a con…
In this paper we study the product of Toeplitz operators on the harmonic Bergman space of the unit disk of the complex plane C. Mainly, we discuss when the product of two quasihomogeneous Toeplitz operators is also a Toeplitz operator, and when such operators commute.
We study Toeplitz operators with uniformly continuous symbols on generalized harmonic Bergman spaces of the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We describe their essential spectra and establish a short exact sequence associated with the $C^{*}$-algebra generated by these operators.
In 1972, B. E. Johnson proved that a locally compact group $G$ is amenable if and only if certain Hochschild cohomology groups of its convolution algebra $L^1(G)$ vanish. Similarly, $G$ is compact if and only if $L^1(G)$ is biprojective: In each case, a classical property of $G$ corresponds to a cohomological propety of $L^1(G)$. Starting with the work of Z.-J. Ruan in 1995, it has become apparent that in the non-commutative setting, i.e. when dealing with the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ or the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$, the canonical operator space structure of the algebras under considerat…
We consider the space of abstract Uryson operators firstly introduced in [9]. We obtain the formulas for band projections on the band generated by increasing set of a positive Uryson operators and on the band generated one-dimensional abstract Uryson operators. We also calculate the laterally continuous part of a abstract Uryson operator.
Let G be a locally compact group. Consider the Banach algebra L_1(G)^**, equipped with the first Arens multiplication, as well as the algebra LUC(G)^*, the dual of the space of bounded left uniformly continuous functions on G, whose product extends the convolution in the measure algebra M(G). We present (for the most interesting case of a non-compact group) completely different - in particular, direct - proofs and even obtain sharpened versions of the results, first proved by Lau-Losert and Lau, that the topological centres of the latter algebras precisely are L_1(G) and M(G), respectively. Th…
We continue the investigation of abstract Uryson operators in vector lattices. Using the recently proved Up-and-down theorem for order bounded, orthogonally additive operators, we consider the domination problem for AM-compact abstract Uryson operators. We obtain the Dodds-Fremlin type theorem and prove that for an AM- compact positive abstract Uryson operator T from a Banach lattice E to a order continuous Banach lattice F, every abstract Uryson operator S from E to F included between 0 and T is also AM-compact.
We present an abstract result that characterizes the coincidence of certain classes of linear operators with the class of Cohen strongly summing linear operators. Our argument is extended to multilinear operators and, as a consequence, we establish a few alternative characterizations for the class of Cohen strongly summing multilinear operators.
We systematically study how properties of abstract operator systems help classifying linear matrix inequality definitions of sets. Our main focus is on polyhedral cones, the 3-dimensional Lorentz cone, where we can completely describe all defining linear matrix inequalities, and on the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. Here we use results on isometries between matrix algebras to describe linear matrix inequality definitions of relatively small size. We conversely use the theory of operator systems to characterize special such isometries.
In a real Hilbert spaces H a smooth operator F is studied, whose derivative at each point of its domain is a symmetric operator. In terms of abstract boundary conditions locally self-adjoint extensions of this operator are described. We use some concepts and facts from symplectic differential geometry.
Projections onto several special subsets in the Dedekind complete vector lattice of orthogonally additive, order bounded (called abstract Uryson) operators between two vector lattices $E$ and $F$ are considered and some new formulas are provided.
In this paper we aim to construct an abstract model of a differential operator with a fractional integro-differential operator composition in final terms, where modeling is understood as an interpretation of concrete differential operators in terms of the infinitesimal generator of a corresponding semigroup. We study such operators as a Kipriyanov operator, Riesz potential, difference operator. Along with this, we consider transforms of m-accretive operators as a generalization, introduce an operator class $\mathfrak{G_α}$ and provide a description of its spectral properties.
In this paper we consider composition operators on Harmonic-Bloch type spaces and we compute the spectrum of composition operators. Also, we characterize isometric composition operators on harmonic Bloch type spaces.
For an operator generating a group on $L^p$ spaces transference results give bounds on the Phillips functional calculus also known as spectral multiplier estimates. In this paper we consider specific group generators which are abstraction of first order differential operators and prove similar spectral multiplier estimates assuming only that the group is bounded on $L^2$ rather than $L^p$. We also prove an R-bounded Hörmander calculus result by assuming an abstract Sobolev embedding property and show that the square of a perturbed Hodge-Dirac operator has such calculus.
In this paper, we define several types of maximal operators on sequence spaces occuring in Harmonic analysis and present various connections between them.
We obtain a complete characterization of the weak-type $(1,1)$ for Haar shift operators in terms of generalized Haar systems adapted to a Borel measure $μ$ in the operator-valued setting. The main technical tool in our method is a noncommutative Calderón-Zygmund decomposition valid for arbitrary Borel measures.
In this paper we characterize essential norm of composition operators on the spaces of Harmonic Bloch functions. These results extends the similar results that were proven for composition operators on Bloch spaces.
We make a progress towards describing the commutants of Toeplitz operators with harmonic symbols on the Bergman space over the unit disk. Our work greatly generalizes several partial results in the field.
In this paper, we study Toeplitz operators on the weighted harmonic Bergman spaces with nonnegative symbols, the weights we choose here are Muckenhoupt A_2 weights. Results obtained include characterizations of bounded Toeplitz operators, compact Toeplitz operators, invertible Toeplitz operators and Toeplitz operators in the Schatten classes.
We investigate the harmonic analysis associated with the hyper-Bessel operator on C, and we prove the chaotic character of the related convolution operators.
In this paper, Mikhlin and Marcinkiewicz--Lizorkin type operator-valued multiplier theorems in weighted Lebesgue-Bochner spaces are studied. By using this results embedding theorems in Sobolev-Lions type spaces is obtained. Moreover, maximal regularity properties of abstract elliptic and parabolic equations are derived
In this paper we introduce and study pseudo-differential operators with operator valued symbols on the abstract Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}(G):=G \times \widehat{G} \times \mathbb{T},$ where $G$ a locally compact abelian group with its dual group $\widehat{G}$. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition on symbols for which these operators are in the class of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. As a key step in proving this we derive a trace formula for the trace class $j$-Weyl transform, $j \in \mathbb{Z}^*$ with symbols in $L^{2}(G\times \widehat{G}).$ We go on to present a characterization of t…
The algebraic structure of V.P. Potapov's Fundamental Matrix Inequality (FMI) is discussed and its interpolation meaning is analyzed. Functional model spaces are involved. A general Abstract Interpolation Problem is formulated which seems to cover all the classical and recent problems in the field and the solution set of this problem is described using the Arov--Grossman formula. The extension theory of isometric operators is the proper language for treating interpolation problems of this type.
In this paper we characterize some basic properties of composition operators on the spaces of harmonic Bloch functions. First we provide some equivalent conditions for boundedness and compactness of composition operators. Then by using these conditions we estimate the essential norm of composition operators. These results extends the similar results that were proven in the literature on the Bloch spaces.
In this paper, having introduced a convergence of a series on the root vectors in the Abel-Lidskii sense, we present a valuable application to the evolution equations. The main issue of the paper is an approach allowing us to principally broaden conditions imposed upon the right-hand side of the evolution equation in the abstract Hilbert space. In this way, we come to the definition of the function of an unbounded non-selfadjoint operator. Meanwhile, considering the main issue we involve an additional concept that is a generalization of the spectral theorem for a non-selfadjoint operator.
In this note we study pseudo-multipliers associated to the harmonic oscillator (also called Hermite multipliers) belonging to Schatten classes on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We also investigate the spectral trace of these operators.
We give an upper bound for the weighted geometric mean using the weighted arithmetic mean and the weighted harmonic mean. We also give a lower bound for the weighted geometric mean. These inequalities are proven for two invertible positive operators.
In this paper, we give a multiplication operator representation of bounded self-adjoint operators T on a Hilbert space H such that -- is a frame for H, for some -- . We state a necessary condition in order for a frame -- to have a representation of the form -- . Frame sequence -- with the synthesis operator U, have also been characterized in terms of the behavior spectrum of -- . Next, using the operator response of an element with respect to a unit vector in H, frames -- of the form -- are characterized. We also consider stability frames as -- . Finally, we conclude this note by raising a con…
Found are conditions on a scalar type spectral operator $A$ in a complex Banach space necessary and sufficient for all weak solutions of the evolution equation \begin{equation*} y'(t)=Ay(t),\ t\ge 0, \end{equation*} to be strongly Gevrey ultradifferentiable of order $β\ge 1$, in particular analytic or entire, on $[0,\infty)$. Certain inherent smoothness improvement effects are analyzed.
This paper can be considered as the sequel of [6], where the authors have proposed an abstract construction of Hardy spaces H^1. They shew an interpolation result for these Hardy spaces with the Lebesgue spaces. Here we describe a more precise result using the real interpolation theory and we clarify the use of Hardy spaces. Then with the help of the bilinear interpolation theory, we then give applications to study bilinear operators on Lebesgue spaces. These ideas permit us to study singular operators with singularities similar to those of bilinear Calderon-Zygmund operators in a far more abs…
We first strictly expressed the basic notions and research methods of abstract operators, which systematically expounded the main results of abstract operator theory. By combining abstract operators with the Laplace transform, we can easily apply this Laplace transform to n+1 dimensional partial differential equations. Further, all the analytic solutions to an initial value problem of an arbitrary order linear partial differential equation are expressed in these abstract operators. By writing abstract operators in this class into integral forms, the solutions in operator form are represented i…
In this paper, we study the separability and spectral properties of singular degenerate elliptic equations in vector valued spaces. We prove that a realization operator by this equation with some boundary conditions is separable and Fredholm in Lebesque spaces. The leading part of the associated differential operator is not self-adjoint. The sharpe estimate of the resolvent, discreetness of spectrum and completeness of root elements of this operator is obtained
One of the major goals in the theory of Toeplitz operators on the Bergman space over the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex place $\mathbb{C}$ is to completely describe the commutant of a given Toeplitz operator, that is, the set of all Toeplitz operators that commute with it. Here we shall study the commutants of a certain class of quasihomogeneous Toeplitz operators.

In this paper we explore the theory of fractional powers of non-negative (and not necessarily self-adjoint) operators and its amazing relationship with the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind to obtain results of existence, regularity and behavior asymptotic of solutions for linear abstract evolution equations of $n$-th order in time, where $n\geqslant3$. We also prove generalizations of classical results on structural damping for linear systems of differential equations.
We consider an operator function (F(λ)) for (λ\in(σ,τ)\subseteq\mathbb R) whose values are semibounded selfadjoint operators in Hilbert space (\mathfrak H). Our main goal is to estimate the number (\mathcal N_F(α,β)) of the eigenvalues of (F(λ)) on a segment ([α,β)\Subset(σ,τ)). In particular, we prove the estimates (\mathcal N_F(α,β)\geqslant ν_F(β)-ν_F(α)) and (\mathcal N_F(α,β)= ν_F(β)-ν_F(α)) where (ν(ξ)) is the number of the negative eigenvalues of the operator (F(ξ)), (ξ\in(σ,τ)). The obtained results are applied for the functions of ordinary differential operators on a finite interval.
We obtain uniqueness theorems for harmonic and subharmonic functions of a new type. They lead to new analytic extension criteria and new conditions for stability of operator semigroups in Banach spaces with Fourier type.
It is shown that, if all weak solutions of the evolution equation \begin{equation*} y'(t)=Ay(t),\ t\ge0, \end{equation*} with a scalar type spectral operator $A$ in a complex Banach space are Gevrey ultradifferentiable of orders less than one, then the operator $A$ is necessarily bounded.
In this work we study operator splitting methods for a certain class of coupled abstract Cauchy problems, where the coupling is such that one of the problems prescribes a "boundary type" extra condition for the other one. The theory of one-sided coupled operator matrices provides an excellent framework to study the well-posedness of such problems. We show that with this machinery even operator splitting methods can be treated conveniently and rather efficiently. We consider three specific examples: the Lie (sequential), the Strang and the weighted splitting, and prove the convergence of these …
We propose a unifying approach to many approximation properties studied in the literature from the 1930s up to our days. To do so, we say that a Banach space E has the (I,J,τ)-approximation property if E-valued operators belonging to the operator ideal I can be approximated, with respect to the topology τ, by operators belonging to the operator ideal J. Restricting τ to a class of linear topologies, which we call ideal topologies, this concept recovers many classical/recent approximation properties as particular instances and several important known results are particular cases of more general…
We extend the notion of narrow operators to nonlinear maps on vector lattices. The main objects are orthogonally additive operators and, in particular, abstract Uryson operators. Most of the results extend known theorems obtained by O. Maslyuchenko, V. Mykhaylyuk and the second named author published in Positivity 13 (2009), pp. 459--495, for linear operators. For instance, we prove that every orthogonally additive laterally-to-norm continuous C-compact operator from an atomless Dedekind complete vector lattice to a Banach space is narrow. Another result asserts that the set U_{on}^{lc}(E,F) o…
We solve a problem posed by Blasco, Bonilla and Grosse-Erdmann in 2010 by constructing a harmonic function on $\mathbb{R}^N$, that is frequently hypercyclic with respect to the partial differentiation operator $\partial/\partial x_k$ and which has a minimal growth rate in terms of the average $L^2$-norm on spheres of radius $r>0$ as $r \to \infty$.
We obtain new uniqueness theorems for harmonic functions defined on the unit disc or in the half plane. These results are applied to obtain new resolvent descriptions of spectral subspaces of polynomially bounded groups of operators on Banach spaces.
