In this note we prove some bounds for the extinction time for the Ricci flow on certain 3-manifolds. Our interest in this comes from a question of Grisha Perelman asked to the first author at a dinner in New York City on April 25th of 2003. His question was ``what happens to the Ricci flow on the 3-sphere when one starts with an arbitrary metric? In particular does the flow become extinct in finite time?'' He then went on to say that one of the difficulties in answering this is that he knew of no good way of constructing minimal surfaces for such a metric in general. However, there is a natural way of constructing such surfaces and that comes from the min--max argument where the minimal of all maximal slices of sweep-outs is a minimal surface; see, for instance, [CD]. The idea is then to look at how the area of this min-max surface changes under the flow. Geometrically the area measures a kind of width of the 3-manifold and as we will see for certain 3-manifolds (those, like the 3-sphere, whose prime decomposition contains no aspherical factors) the area becomes zero in finite time corresponding to that the solution becomes extinct in finite time. Moreover, we will discuss a possible lower bound for how fast the area becomes zero. Very recently Perelman posted a paper (see [Pe1]) answering his original question about finite extinction time. However, even after the appearance of his paper, then we still think that our slightly different approach may be of interest. In part because it is in some ways geometrically more natural, in part because it also indicates that lower bounds should hold, and in part because it avoids using the curve shortening flow that he simultaneously with the Ricci flow needed to invoke and thus our approach is in some respects technically easier.
In this paper we discuss Perelman's Lambda-functional, Perelman's Ricci shrinker entropy as well as the Ricci expander entropy on a class of manifolds with isolated conical singularities. On such manifolds, a singular Ricci de Turck flow preserving the isolated conical singularities exists by our previous work. We prove that the entropies are monotone along the singular Ricci de Turck flow. We employ these entropies to show that in the singular setting, Ricci solitons are gradient and that steady or expanding Ricci solitons are Einstein.
In this article, we introduce a new method (based on Perelman's lambda-functional) to study the stability of compact Ricci-flat metrics. Under the assumption that all infinitesimal Ricci-flat deformations are integrable we prove: (A) a Ricci-flat metric is a local maximizer of lambda in a C^2,alpha-sense iff its Lichnerowicz Laplacian is nonpositive, (B) lambda satisfies a Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality, (C) the Ricci flow does not move excessively in gauge directions. As consequences, we obtain a rigidity result, a new proof of Sesum's dynamical stability theorem, and a dynamical insta…
In this paper, we are interested in conical structures of manifolds with respect to the Ricci flow and, in particular, we study them from the point of view of Perelman's functionals. In a first part, we study Perelman's $λ$ and $ν$ functionals of cones and characterize their finiteness in terms of the $λ$-functional of the link. As an application, we characterize manifolds with conical singularities on which a $λ$-functional can be defined and get upper bounds on the $ν$-functional of asymptotically conical manifolds. We then present an adaptation of the proof of Perelman's pseudolocality theo…
This is the first of a series of papers on the long-time behavior of 3 dimensional Ricci flows with surgery. In this paper we first fix a notion of Ricci flows with surgery, which will be used in this and the following three papers. Then we review Perelman's long-time estimates and generalize them to the case in which the underlying manifold is allowed to have a boundary. Eventually, making use of Perelman's techniques, we prove new long-time estimates, which hold whenever the metric is sufficiently collapsed.
We study Brownian motion and stochastic parallel transport on Perelman's almost Ricci flat manifold $\mathscr M=M\times \mathbb S^N\times I$, whose dimension depends on a parameter $N$ unbounded from above. We construct sequences of projected Brownian motions and stochastic parallel transports which for $N \to \infty$ converge to the corresponding objects for the Ricci flow. In order to make precise this process of passing to the limit, we study the martingale problems for the Laplace operator on $\mathscr M$ and for the horizontal Laplacian on the orthonormal frame bundle $\mathscr{OM}$ . As …
The Ricci flow is a natural evolution equation for Riemannian metrics on a given manifold. The main goal is to understand singularity formation. In his spectacular 2002 breakthrough, Perelman achieved a qualitative understanding of singularity formation in dimension $3$. More precisely, Perelman showed that every finite-time singularity to the Ricci flow in dimension $3$ is modeled on an ancient $κ$-solution. Moreover, Perelman proved a structure theorem for ancient $κ$-solutions in dimension $3$. In this survey, we discuss recent developments which have led to a complete classification of all…
We introduce a flow of Riemannian metrics over compact manifolds with formal limit at infinite time a shrinking Ricci soliton. We call this flow the Soliton-Ricci flow. It correspond to a Perelman's modified backward Ricci type flow with some special restriction conditions. The restriction conditions are motivated by convexity results for Perelman's $\mathcal{W}$-functional over convex subsets inside adequate subspaces of Riemannian metrics. We show indeed that the Soliton-Ricci flow is generated by the gradient flow of the restriction of Perelman's $\mathcal{W}$-functional over such subspaces…
We discuss some of the key ideas of Perelman's proof of Poincaré's conjecture via the Hamilton program of using the Ricci flow, from the perspective of the modern theory of nonlinear partial differential equations.
In the first part, we derive a sharp gradient estimate for the log of Dirichlet heat kernel and Poisson heat kernel on domains, and a sharpened local Li-Yau gradient estimate that matches the global one. In the second part, without explicit curvature assumptions, we prove a global upper bound for the fundamental solution of an equation introduced by G. Perelman, i.e. the heat equation of the conformal Laplacian under backward Ricci flow. Further, under nonnegative Ricci curvature assumption, we prove a qualitatively sharp, global Gaussian upper bound.
In this paper we study the classification of compact $κ$-noncollapsed ancient solutions to the 3-dimensional Ricci flow which are rotationally and reflection symmetric. We prove that any such solution is isometric to the sphere or the type II ancient solution constructed by G. Perelman.
In this note, we construct families of functionals of the type of $\mathcal{F}$-functional and $\mathcal{W}$-functional of Perelman. We prove that these new functionals are nondecreasing under the Ricci flow. As applications, we give a proof of the theorem that compact steady Ricci breathers must be Ricci-flat. Using these new functionals, we also give a new proof of Perelman's no non-trivial expanding breather theorem. Furthermore, we prove that compact expanding Ricci breathers must be Einstein by a direct method. In this note, we also extend X. Cao's methods of eigenvalues\cite{C} and impro…
We verify a conjecture of Perelman, which states that there exists a canonical Ricci flow through singularities starting from an arbitrary compact Riemannian 3-manifold. Our main result is a uniqueness theorem for such flows, which, together with an earlier existence theorem of Lott and the second named author, implies Perelman's conjecture. We also show that this flow through singularities depends continuously on its initial condition and that it may be obtained as a limit of Ricci flows with surgery. Our results have applications to the study of diffeomorphism groups of three manifolds --- i…
In \cite{P1}, Perelman established a differential Li-Yau-Hamilton (LYH) type inequality for fundamental solutions of the conjugate heat equation corresponding to the Ricci flow on compact manifolds (also see \cite{N2}). As an application of the LYH inequality, Perelman proved a pseudolocality result for the Ricci flow on compact manifolds. In this article we provide the details for the proofs of these results in the case of a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold. Using these results we prove that under certain conditions, a finite time singularity of the Ricci flow must form within a compa…
The purpose of this work is to study some monotone functionals of the heat kernel on a complete Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. In particular, we show that on these manifolds, the gradient estimate of Li and Yau, the gradient estimate of Ni, the monotonicity of the Perelman's entropy and the volume doubling property are all consequences of an entropy inequality recently discovered by Baudoin-Garofalo. The latter is a linearized version of a logarithmic Sobolev inequality that is due to D. Bakry and M. Ledoux.
By means of a Kaluza-Klein type argument we show that the Perelman's F-functional is the Einstein-Hilbert action in a space with extra ``phantom'' dimensions. In this way, we try to interpret some remarks of Perelman in the introduction and at the end of the first section in his first famous paper. As a consequence the Ricci flow (modified by a diffeomorphism and a time-dependent factor) is the evolution of the ``real'' part of the metric under a constrained gradient flow of the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational action in higher dimension.
Let (M,g) be a three-dimensional steady gradient Ricci soliton which is non-flat and κ-noncollapsed. We prove that (M,g) is isometric to the Bryant soliton up to scaling. This solves a problem mentioned in Perelman's first paper.
In this paper, we construct smooth forward Ricci flow evolutions of singular initial metrics resulting from rotationally symmetric neckpinches on S^(n+1), without performing an intervening surgery. In the restrictive context of rotational symmetry, this construction gives evidence in favor of Perelman's hope for a "canonically defined Ricci flow through singularities".
In this paper, we study curvature behavior at the first singular time of solution to the Ricci flow on a smooth, compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, $\frac{\partial}{\partial t}g_{ij} = -2R_{ij}$ for $t\in [0,T)$. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type I singularities at $T$, using Perelman's $\mathcal{W}$-functional, we show that suitable blow-ups of our evolving metrics converge in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov sense to a Gaussian shrinker. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type II singularities at $T$, we show that suitable…
We consider compact ancient solutions to the three-dimensional Ricci flow which are noncollapsed. We prove that such a solutions is either a family of shrinking round spheres, or it has a unique asymptotic behavior as $t \to -\infty$ which we describe. This analysis applies in particular to the ancient solution constructed by Perelman.
We prove a uniform Sobolev inequality for Ricci flow, which is independent of the number of surgeries. As an application, under less assumptions, a non-collapsing result stronger than Perelman's $κ$ non-collapsing with surgery is derived. The proof is shorter and seems more accessible. The result also improves some earlier ones where the Sobolev inequality depended on the number of surgeries.
The Ricci iteration is a discrete analogue of the Ricci flow. According to Perelman, the Ricci flow converges to a Kahler-Einstein metric whenever one exists, and it has been conjectured that the Ricci iteration should behave similarly. This article confirms this conjecture. As a special case, this gives a new method of uniformization of the Riemann sphere.
Let $(M,g(t))$, $0\le t\le T$, $\partial M\neϕ$, be a compact $n$-dimensional manifold, $n\ge 2$, with metric $g(t)$ evolving by the Ricci flow such that the second fundamental form of $\partial M$ with respect to the unit outward normal of $\partial M$ is uniformly bounded below on $\partial M\times [0,T]$. We will prove a global Li-Yau gradient estimate for the solution of the generalized conjugate heat equation on $M\times [0,T]$. We will give another proof of Perelman's Li-Yau-Hamilton type inequality for the fundamental solution of the conjugate heat equation on closed manifolds without u…
We derive a family of weighted scalar curvature monotonicity formulas for generalized Ricci flow, involving an auxiliary dilaton field evolving by a certain reaction-diffusion equation motivated by renormalization group flow. These scalar curvature monotonicities are dual to a new family of Perelman-type energy and entropy monotonicity formulas by coupling to a solution of the associated weighted conjugate heat equation. In the setting of Ricci flow, we further obtain a new family of convex Nash entropies and pseudolocality principles.
We consider the volume-normalized Ricci flow close to compact shrinking Ricci solitons. We show that if a compact Ricci soliton $(M,g)$ is a local maximum of Perelman's shrinker entropy, any normalized Ricci flow starting close to it exists for all time and converges towards a Ricci soliton. If $g$ is not a local maximum of the shrinker entropy, we show that there exists a nontrivial normalized Ricci flow emerging from it. These theorems are analogues of results in the Ricci-flat and in the Einstein case.
We give a simple proof of an extension of the existence results of Ricci flow of G.Giesen and P.M.Topping [GiT1],[GiT2], on incomplete surfaces with bounded above Gauss curvature without using the difficult Shi's existence theorem of Ricci flow on complete non-compact surfaces and the pseudolocality theorem of G.Perelman [P1] on Ricci flow. We will also give a simple proof of a special case of the existence theorem of P.M.Topping [T] without using the existence theorem of W.X.Shi [S1].
We prove that Ricci flows with almost maximal extinction time must be nearly round, provided that they have positive isotropic curvature when crossed with $\mathbb{R}^{2}$. As an application, we show that positively curved metrics on $S^{3}$ and $RP^{3}$ with almost maximal width must be nearly round.
We obtain a compactness result for Fano manifolds and Kähler Ricci flows. Comparing to the more general Riemannian versions by Anderson and Hamilton, in this Fano case, the curvature assumption is much weaker and is preserved by the Kähler Ricci flows. One assumption is the boundedness of the Ricci potential and the other is the smallness of Perelman's entropy. As one application, we obtain a new local regularity criteria and structure result for Kähler Ricci flows. The proof is based on a Hölder estimate for the gradient of harmonic functions, which may be of independent interest.
We prove a so called $κ$ non-inflating property for Ricci flow, which provides an upper bound for volume ratio of geodesic balls over Euclidean ones, under an upper bound for scalar curvature. This result can be regarded as the opposite statement of Perelman's $κ$ non-collapsing property for Ricci flow. These two results together imply volume doubling property for Ricci flow without assuming Ricci curvature lower bound.
In this paper, we study the classification of $κ$-noncollapsed ancient solutions to three-dimensional Ricci flow on $S^3$. We prove that such a solution is either isometric to a family of shrinking round spheres, or the Type II ancient solution constructed by Perelman.
Under suitable conditions near infinity and assuming boundedness of curvature tensor, we prove a no breathers theorem in the spirit of Ivey-Perelman for some noncompact Ricci flows. These include Ricci flows on asymptotically flat (AF) manifolds with positive scalar curvature. Since the method for the compact case faces a difficulty, the proof involves solving a new non-local elliptic equation which is the Euler-Lagrange equation of a scaling invariant log Sobolev inequality.
We prove three new monotonicity formulas for manifolds with a lower Ricci curvature bound and show that they are connected to rate of convergence to tangent cones. In fact, we show that the derivative of each of these three monotone quantities is bounded from below in terms of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance to the nearest cone. The monotonicity formulas are related to the classical Bishop-Gromov volume comparison theorem and Perelman's celebrated monotonicity formula for the Ricci flow. We will explain the connection between all of these. Moreover, we show that these new monotonicity formulas a…
We introduce a flow of Kähler structures over Fano manifolds with formal limit at infinite time a Kähler-Ricci soliton. This flow correspond to a Perelman's modified backward Kähler-Ricci type flow that we call Soliton-Kähler-Ricci flow. It can be generated by the Soliton-Ricci flow. We assume that the Soliton-Ricci flow exists for all times and the Bakry-Emery-Ricci tensor preserve a positive uniform lower bound with respect to the evolving metric. In this case we show that the corresponding Soliton-Kähler-Ricci flow converges exponentially fast to a Kähler-Ricci soliton.
We study the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow with initial data of symplectic type, and show that this condition is preserved. In the case of a Fano background with toric symmetry, we establish global existence of the normalized flow. We derive an extension of Perelman's entropy functional to this setting, which yields convergence of nonsingular solutions at infinity. Furthermore, we derive an extension of Mabuchi's $K$-energy to this setting, which yields weak convergence of the flow.
A question about Ricci flow is when the diameters of the manifold under the evolving metrics stay finite and bounded away from 0. Topping \cite{T:1} addresses the question with an upper bound that depends on the $L^{(n-1)/2}$ bound of the scalar curvature, volume and a local version of Perelman's $ν$ invariant. Here $n$ is the dimension. His result is sharp when Perelman's F entropy is positive. In this note, we give a direct proof that for all compact manifolds, the diameter bound depends just on the $L^{(n-1)/2}$ bound of the scalar curvature, volume and the Sobolev constants (or positive Ya…
We derive identities for general flows of Riemannian metrics that may be regarded as local mean-value, monotonicity, or Lyapunov formulae. These generalize previous work of the first author for mean curvature flow and other nonlinear diffusions. Our results apply in particular to Ricci flow, where they yield a local monotone quantity directly analogous to Perelman's reduced volume V and a local identity related to Perelman's average energy F.
We study the Ricci flow for initial metrics with positive isotropic curvature (strictly PIC for short). In the first part of this paper, we prove new curvature pinching estimates which ensure that blow-up limits are uniformly PIC in all dimensions. Moreover, in dimension $n \geq 12$, we show that blow-up limits are weakly PIC2. This can be viewed as a higher-dimensional version of the fundamental Hamilton-Ivey pinching estimate in dimension $3$. In the second part, we develop a theory of ancient solutions which have bounded curvature; are $κ$-noncollapsed; are weakly PIC2; and are uniformly PI…
In this survey we provide an overview of our recent results concerning Ricci de Turck flow on spaces with isolated conical singularities. The crucial characteristic of the flow is that it preserves the conical singularity. Under certain conditions, Ricci flat metrics with isolated conical singularities are stable and positive scalar curvature is preserved under the flow. We also discuss the relation to Perelman's entropies in the singular setting, and outline open questions and future reseach directions.
In the following series of papers we analyze the long-time behavior of 3 dimensional Ricci flows with surgery. Our main result will be that if the surgeries are performed correctly, then only finitely many surgeries occur and after some time the curvature is bounded by $C t^{-1}$. This result confirms a conjecture of Perelman. In the course of the proof, we also obtain a qualitative description of the geometry as $t \to \infty$.
This paper introduces a functional generalizing Perelman's weighted Hilbert-Einstein action and the Dirichlet energy for spinors. It is well-defined on a wide class of non-compact manifolds; on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, the functional is shown to admit a unique critical point, which is necessarily of min-max type, and Ricci flow is its gradient flow. The proof is based on variational formulas for weighted spinorial functionals, valid on all spin manifolds with boundary.
We present local estimates for solutions to the Ricci flow, without the assumption that the solution has bounded curvature. These estimates lead to a generalisation of one of the pseudolocality results of G.Perelman in dimension two.
The geometry of a ball within a Riemannian manifold is coarsely controlled if it has a lower bound on its Ricci curvature and a positive lower bound on its volume. We prove that such coarse local geometric control must persist for a definite amount of time under three-dimensional Ricci flow, and leads to local C/t decay of the full curvature tensor, irrespective of what is happening beyond the local region. As a by-product, our results generalise the Pseudolocality theorem of Perelman and Tian-Wang in this dimension by not requiring the Ricci curvature to be almost-positive, and not asking the…
This paper studies the Ricci flow on closed manifolds admitting harmonic spinors. It is shown that Perelman's Ricci flow entropy can be expressed in terms of the energy of harmonic spinors in all dimensions, and in four dimensions, in terms of the energy of Seiberg-Witten monopoles. Consequently, Ricci flow is the gradient flow of these energies. The proof relies on a weighted version of the monopole equations, introduced here. Further, a sharp parabolic Hitchin-Thorpe inequality for simply-connected, spin 4-manifolds is proven. From this, it follows that the normalized Ricci flow on any exoti…
In this paper we analyze the long-time behaviour of 3 dimensional Ricci flow with surgery. We prove that under the topological condition that the initial manifold only has non-aspherical or hyperbolic components in its geometric decomposition, there are only finitely many surgeries and the curvature is bounded by $C t^{-1}$ for large $t$. This answers an open question in Perelman's work, which was made more precise by Lott and Tian, for this class of initial topologies. More general classes will be discussed in subsequent papers using similar methods.
