Manifold structure of spaces of spherical tight frames

The new version corrects some typographical errors, including a misleading error in the abstract: we show connectedness of F^R_{k,2}, not of more general F^R_{k,n}
We consider the space F^E_{k,n} of all spherical tight frames of k vectors in real or complex n--dimensional Hilbert space E^n, i.e. E=R or E=C, and its orbit space G^E_{k,n}=F^E_{k,n}/O^E_n under the obvious action of the group O^E_n of structure preserving transformations of E^n. We show that the quotient map F^E_{k,n} -> G^E_{k,n} is a locally trivial fiber bundle (also in the more general case of ellipsoidal tight frames) and that there is a homeomorphism G^E_{k,n} -> G^E_{k,k-n}. We show that G^E_{k,n} and F^E_{k,n} are real manifolds whenever k and n are relatively prime, and we describe them as disjoint unions of finitely many manifolds (of various dimensions) when when k and n have a common divisor. We also prove that F^R_{k,2} is connected (k >= 4) and F^R_{n+2,n} is connected, (n >= 2). The spaces G^R_{4,2} and G^R_{5,2} are investigated in detail. The former is found to be a graph and the latter is the orientable surface of genus 25.
In this paper, we develop a general theoretical framework for constructing Haar-type tight framelets on any compact set with a hierarchical partition. In particular, we construct a novel area-regular hierarchical partition on the 2-sphere and establish its corresponding spherical Haar tight framelets with directionality. We conclude by evaluating and illustrating the effectiveness of our area-regular spherical Haar tight framelets in several denoising experiments. Furthermore, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) model for spherical signal denoising which employs the fast framelet d…
A finite collection of unit vectors $S \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is called a spherical two-distance set if there are two numbers $a$ and $b$ such that the inner products of distinct vectors from $S$ are either $a$ or $b$. We prove that if $a\ne -b,$ then a two-distance set that forms a tight frame for $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a spherical embedding of a strongly regular graph, and every strongly regular graph gives rise to two-distance tight frames through standard spherical embeddings. Together with an earlier work by S. Waldron on the equiangular case ({\em Linear Alg. Appl.}, vol. 41, pp. 2228-2242, 20…
In this paper we give a new construction of parametric families of complex Hadamard matrices of square orders, and connect them to equiangular tight frames. The results presented here generalize some of the recent ideas of Bodmann et al. and extend the list of known equiangular tight frames. In particular, a (36,21) frame coming from a nontrivial cube root signature matrix is obtained for the first time.
We study several interesting examples of Biangular Tight Frames (BTFs) - basis-like sets of unit vectors admitting exactly two distinct frame angles (ie, pairwise absolute inner products) - and examine their relationships with Equiangular Tight Frames (ETFs) - basis-like systems which admit exactly one frame angle. We demonstrate a smooth parametrization BTFs, where the corresponding frame angles transform smoothly with the parameter, which "passes through" an ETF answers two questions regarding the rigidity of BTFs. We also develop a general framework of so-called harmonic BTFs and Steiner BT…
We derive easily verifiable conditions which characterize when complex Seidel matrices containing cube roots of unity have exactly two eigenvalues. The existence of such matrices is equivalent to the existence of equiangular tight frames for which the inner product between any two frame vectors is always a common multiple of the cube roots of unity. We also exhibit a relationship between these equiangular tight frames, complex Seidel matrices, and highly regular, directed graphs. We construct examples of such frames with arbitrarily many vectors.
We give a number of algorithms for constructing unitary matrices and tight frames with specialized properties. These were produced at the request of researchers at the Frame Research Center (www.framerc.org) to help with their research on fusion frames, the Kadison-Singer Problem and equiangular tight frames.
We characterize the frames on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space that can be projected to a tight frame for an infinite dimensional subspace. A result of Casazza and Leon states that an arbitrary frame for a 2N- or (2N-1)-dimensional Hilbert space can be projected to a tight frame for an N-dimensional subspace. Surprisingly, we demonstrate a large class of frames for infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces which cannot be projected to a tight frame for any infinite dimensional subspace.
We propose a simple method to construct step mask and corresponding step wavelet functions that generate tight wavelet frames on the field of p-adic numbers. To construct tight wavelet frames we do not use the principle of unitary extension, we use Pontryagin's principle of duality.
We introduce probabilistic frames to study finite frames whose elements are chosen at random. While finite tight frames generalize orthonormal bases by allowing redundancy, independent, uniformly distributed points on the sphere approximately form a finite unit norm tight frame (FUNTF). In the present paper, we develop probabilistic versions of tight frames and FUNTFs to significantly weaken the requirements on the random choice of points to obtain an approximate finite tight frame. Namely, points can be chosen from any probabilistic tight frame, they do not have to be identically distributed,…
We prove that any tight frame in Hilbert space can be obtained by the Kaczmarz algorithm. An explicit way of constructing this correspondence is given. The uniqueness of the correspondence is determined.
Hilbert space fusion frames are a natural extension of Hilbert space frames, extending the notion from a set of vectors in a Hilbert space to a set of subspaces of a Hilbert space with analogous notions of overcompleteness and boundedness. As tight frames are a very important topic within standard frame theory, tight fusion frames are similarly important; however, only trivial examples of tight fusion frames are hitherto known. In this paper, we apply ideas from Gabor analysis to demonstrate a non-trivial construction of tight fusion frames. We then use this construction to further show their …
We introduce a class of finite tight frames called prime tight frames and prove some of their elementary properties. In particular, we show that any finite tight frame can be written as a union of prime tight frames. We then characterize all prime harmonic tight frames and use this characterization to suggest effective analysis and synthesis computation strategies for such frames. Finally, we describe all prime frames constructed from the spectral tetris method, and, as a byproduct, we obtain a characterization of when the spectral tetris construction works for redundancies below two.
The construction of finite tight Gabor frames plays an important role in many applications. These applications include significant ones in signal and image processing. We explore when constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) sequences can be used to generate tight Gabor frames. The main theorem uses Janssen's representation and the zeros of the discrete periodic ambiguity function to give necessary and sufficient conditions for determining whether any Gabor frame is tight. The relevance of the theorem depends significantly on the construction of examples. These examples are necessarily …
Equi-chordal and equi-isoclinic tight fusion frames (ECTFFs and EITFFs) are both types of optimal packings of subspaces in Euclidean spaces. In the special case where these subspaces are one-dimensional, ECTFFs and EITFFs both correspond to types of optimal packings of lines known as equiangular tight frames. In this brief note, we review some of the fundamental ideas and results concerning ECTFFs and EITFFs.
In this paper we demonstrate that there are distinct differences between real and complex equiangular tight frames (ETFs) with regards to erasures. For example, we prove that there exist arbitrarily large non-trivial complex equiangular tight frames which are robust against three erasures, and that such frames come from a unique class of complex ETFs. In addition, we extend certain results in \cite{BP} to complex vector spaces as well as show that other results regarding real ETFs are not valid for complex ETFs.
We consider frames in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space Hn where frames are exactly the spanning sets of the vector space. The diagram vector of a vector in R2 was previously defined using polar coordinates and was used to characterize tight frames in R2 in a geometric fashion. Reformulating the definition of a diagram vector in R2 we provide a natural extension of this notion to Rn and Cn. Using the diagram vectors we give a characterization of tight frames in Rn or Cn. Further we provide a characterization of when a unit-norm frame in Rn or Cn can be scaled to a tight frame. This classifica…
Wavelet frames for $L^2({\mathbb R})$ can be characterized by means of spectral techniques. This work uses spectral formulas to determine all the tight wavelet frames for $L^2({\mathbb R})$ with a fixed finite number of generators of minimal support. The method associates wavelet frames of this type with certain inner operator-valued functions in Hardy spaces. The cases with one and two generators are completely solved.
First we show that tight nonorthogonal fusion frames a relatively easy to com by. In order to do this we need to establish a classification of how to to wire a self adjoint operator as a product of (nonorthogonal) projection operators. We also discuss the link between nonorthogonal fusion frames and positive operator valued measures, we define and study a nonorthogonal fusion frame potential, and we introduce the idea of random nonorthogonal fusion frames.
Tight wavelet frames are computationally and theoretically attractive, but most existing multivariate constructions have various drawbacks, including low vanishing moments for the wavelets, or a large number of wavelet masks. We further develop existing work combining sums of squares representations with tight wavelet frame construction, and present a new and general method for constructing such frames. Focusing on the case of box splines, we also demonstrate how the flexibility of our approach can lead to tight wavelet frames with high numbers of vanishing moments for all of the wavelet masks…
We prove the existence of equiangular tight frames having n=2d-1 elements drawn from either C^d or C^(d-1) whenever n is either 2^k-1 for k in N, or a power of a prime such that n=3 mod 4. We also find a simple explicit expression for the prime power case by establishing a connection to a 2d-element equiangular tight frame based on quadratic residues.
We establish dilation theorems for non-tight frames with additional structure, i.e., frames generated by unitary groups of operators and projective unitary representations. This generalizes previous dilation results for Parseval frames due to Han and Larson and Gabardo and Han. We also extend the dilation theorem for Parseval wavelets, due to Dutkay, Han, Picioroaga, and Sun , by identifying the optimal class of frame wavelets for which dilation into an orthonormal wavelet is possible.
A Weyl-Heisenberg frame for L^2(R) is a frame consisting of translates and modulates of a fixed function. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for this family to form a tight WH-frame. This allows us to write down explicitly all functions g for which all translates and modulates of g form an orthonormal basis for L^2(R). There are a number of consequences of this classification, including a simple direct classification of the alternate dual frames to a WH-frame (A result originally due to Janssen).
Equiangular tight frames provide optimal packings of lines through the origin. We combine Steiner triple systems with Hadamard matrices to produce a new infinite family of equiangular tight frames. This in turn leads to new constructions of strongly regular graphs and distance-regular antipodal covers of the complete graph.
A Grassmannian frame is a collection of unit vectors which are optimally incoherent. To date, the vast majority of explicit Grassmannian frames are equiangular tight frames (ETFs). This paper surveys every known construction of ETFs and tabulates existence for sufficiently small dimensions.
In this paper we describe some new algebraic features of the Gram matrices of complex Equiangular Tight Frames (ETF). This lead on the one hand to the nonexistence of several low dimensional complex ETFs; and on the other hand to the full algebraic classification of all complex ETFs in C^3. We use computer aided methods, in particular, Groebner basis computations to obtain these results.
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a set of unit vectors whose coherence achieves the Welch bound, and so is as incoherent as possible. They arise in numerous applications. It is well known that real ETFs are equivalent to a certain subclass of strongly regular graphs. In this note, we give some alternative techniques for understanding this equivalence. In a later document, we will use these techniques to further generalize this theory.
Recent results from real algebraic geometry and the theory of polynomial optimization are related in a new framework to the existence question of multivariate tight wavelet frames whose generators have at least one vanishing moment. Namely, several equivalent formulations of the so-called Unitary Extension Principle by Ron and Shen are interpreted in terms of hermitian sums of squares of certain nonnegative trigonometric polynomials and in terms of semi-definite programming. The latter together with the recent results in algebraic geometry and semi-definite programming allow us to answer affir…
We investigate the topological and metric structure of the set of idempotent operators and projections which have prescribed diagonal entries with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space. As an application, we settle some cases of conjectures of Larson, Dykema, and Strawn on the connectedness of the set of unit-norm tight frames.
Based on the shearlet transform we present a general construction of continuous tight frames for $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ from any sufficiently smooth function with anisotropic moments. This includes for example compactly supported systems, piecewise polynomial systems, or both. From our earlier results it follows that these systems enjoy the same desirable approximation properties for directional data as the previous bandlimited and very specific constructions due to Kutyniok and Labate. We also show that the representation formulas we derive are in a sense optimal for the shearlet transform.
This article gives a procedure to convert a frame which is not a tight frame into a Parseval frame for the same space, with the requirement that each element in the resulting Parseval frame can be explicitly written as a linear combination of the elements in the original frame. Several examples are considered, such as a Fourier frame on a spiral. The procedure can be applied to the construction of Parseval frames for L^2(B(0,R)), the space of square integrable functions whose domain is the ball of radius R. When a finite number of measurements are used to reconstruct a signal in L^2(B(0,R)), e…
We turn a given filter bank into a filtering scheme that provides perfect reconstruction, synthesis is the adjoint of the analysis part (so-called unitary filter banks), all filters have equal norm, and the essential features of the original filter bank are preserved. Unitary filter banks providing perfect reconstruction are induced by tight generalized frames, which enable signal decomposition using a set of linear operators. If, in addition, frame elements have equal norm, then the signal energy is spread through the various filter bank channels in some uniform fashion, which is often more s…
Motivated by the idea of $J$-frame for a Krein space $\textbf{\textit{K}}$, introduced by Giribet \textit{et al.} (J. I. Giribet, A. Maestripieri, F. Martínez Pería, P. G. Massey, \textit{On frames for Krein spaces}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. (1), {\bf 393} (2012), 122--137.), we introduce the notion of $ζ-J$-tight frame for a Krein space $\textbf{\textit{K}}$. In this paper we characterize $J$-orthonormal basis for $\textbf{\textit{K}}$ in terms of $ζ-J$-Parseval frame. We show that a Krein space is richly supplied with $ζ-J$-Parseval frames. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition wh…
Equiangular tight frames (ETFs) may be used to construct examples of feasible points for semidefinite programs arising in sum-of-squares (SOS) optimization. We show how generalizing the calculations in a recent work of the authors' that explored this connection also yields new bounds on the sparsity of (both real and complex) ETFs. One corollary shows that Steiner ETFs corresponding to finite projective planes are optimally sparse in the sense of achieving tightness in a matrix inequality controlling overlaps between sparsity patterns of distinct rows of the synthesis matrix. We also formulate…
We show that the spin wavelets on the sphere $S^2$, which were constructed by the first author and Marinucci in an earlier article, can be chosen so as to form a nearly tight frame. These spin wavelets can be applied to the study of the polarization of cosmic microwave background radiation. For certain of these frames, there is a positive $C$ such that each frame element at scale $a^j$ is supported in a geodesic ball of radius $Ca^j$.
This paper demonstrates that random, independently chosen equi-dimensional subspaces with a unitarily invariant distribution in a real Hilbert space provide nearly tight, nearly equiangular fusion frames. The angle between a pair of subspaces is measured in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product of the corresponding orthogonal projections. If the subspaces are selected at random, then a measure concentration argument shows that these inner products concentrate near an average value. Overwhelming success probability for near tightness and equiangularity is guaranteed if the dimension of the…
Let $\hil$ be a finite dimensional (real or complex) Hilbert space and let $\{a_i\}_{i=1}^\infty$ be a non-increasing sequence of positive numbers. Given a finite sequence of vectors $\f$ in $\hil$ we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of $r\in \NN\cup\{\infty\}$ and a Bessel sequence $\g$ in $\hil$ such that $\cF\cup\cG$ is a tight frame for $\hil$ and $\|g_i\|^2=a_i$ for $1\leq i\leq r$. Moreover, in this case we compute the minimum $r\in \NN\cup\{\infty\}$ with this property. Using recent results on the Schur-Horn theorem, we also obtain a not so optimal but algorith…
We present a new efficient algorithm to construct partitions of a special class of equiangular tight frames (ETFs) that satisfy the operator norm bound established by a theorem of Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava (MSS), which they proved as a corollary yields a positive solution to the Kadison-Singer problem. In particular, we prove that certain diagonal partitions of complex ETFs generated by recursive skew-symmetric conference matrices yield a refinement of the MSS bound. Moreover, we prove that all partitions of ETFs whose largest subset has cardinality three or less also satisfy the MSS bo…
Finite unit norm tight frames provide Parseval-like decompositions of vectors in terms of redundant components of equal weight. They are known to be exceptionally robust against additive noise and erasures, and as such, have great potential as encoding schemes. Unfortunately, up to this point, these frames have proven notoriously difficult to construct. Indeed, though the set of all unit norm tight frames, modulo rotations, is known to contain manifolds of nontrivial dimension, we have but a small finite number of known constructions of such frames. In this paper, we present a new iterative al…
Hilbert space frames generalize orthonormal bases to allow redundancy in representations of vectors while keeping good reconstruction properties. A frame comes with an associated frame operator encoding essential properties of the frame. We study a polytope that arises in an algorithm for constructing all finite frames with given lengths of frame vectors and spectrum of the frame operator, which is a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. For equal norm tight frames, we give a non-redundant description of the polytope in terms of equations and inequalities. From this we obtain the dimension and number of f…
Let $q\geq 2$ be an integer, and $\Bbb F_q^d$, $d\geq 1$, be the vector space over the cyclic space $\Bbb F_q$. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we obtain sufficient conditions on $E \subset \Bbb F_q^d$ such that the inverse Fourier transform of $1_E$ generates a tight wavelet frame in $L^2(\Bbb F_q^d)$. We call these sets (tight) wavelet frame sets. The conditions are given in terms of multiplicative and translational tilings, which is analogous with Theorem 1.1 ([20]) by Wang in the setting of finite fields. In the second part of the paper, we exhibit a constructive method for o…
The geometry of fundamental domains of lattices was used by Han and Wang to construct multivariate Gabor frames for separable lattices. We build upon their results to obtain Gabor frames with smooth and compactly supported window functions. For this purpose we study pairs of lattices which have equal density and allow for a common compact and star-shaped fundamental domain. The results are then extended to a larger class of lattices via symplectic equivalence.
Equiangular tight frames (ETFs) are configurations of vectors which are optimally geometrically spread apart and provide resolutions of the identity. Many known constructions of ETFs are group covariant, meaning they result from the action of a group on a vector, like all known constructions of symmetric, informationally complete, positive operator-valued measures. In this short article, some results characterizing the transitivity of the symmetry groups of ETFs will be presented as well as a proof that an infinite class of so-called Gabor-Steiner ETFs are roux lines, where roux lines are a ge…

Spline wavelet tight frames of Ron-Shen have been used widely in frame based image analysis and restorations. However, except for the tight frame property and the approximation order of the truncated series, there are few other properties of this family of spline wavelet tight frames to be known. This paper is to present a few new properties of this family that will provide further understanding of it and, hopefully, give some indications why it is efficient in image analysis and restorations. In particular, we present a recurrence formula of computing generators of higher order spline wavelet…
