We prove that any tight frame in Hilbert space can be obtained by the Kaczmarz algorithm. An explicit way of constructing this correspondence is given. The uniqueness of the correspondence is determined.
The Kaczmarz algorithm is an iterative method for solving a system of linear equations. It can be extended so as to reconstruct a vector $x$ in a (separable) Hilbert space from the inner-products $\{\langle x, ϕ_{n} \rangle\}$. The Kaczmarz algorithms defines a sequence of approximations from the sequence $\{\langle x, ϕ_{n} \rangle\}$; these approximations only converge to $x$ when $\{ϕ_{n}\}$ is ${effective}$. We dualize the Kaczmarz algorithm so that $x$ can be obtained from $\{\langle x, ϕ_{n} \rangle\}$ by using a second sequence $\{ψ_{n}\}$ in the reconstruction. This allows for the reco…

We characterize the frames on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space that can be projected to a tight frame for an infinite dimensional subspace. A result of Casazza and Leon states that an arbitrary frame for a 2N- or (2N-1)-dimensional Hilbert space can be projected to a tight frame for an N-dimensional subspace. Surprisingly, we demonstrate a large class of frames for infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces which cannot be projected to a tight frame for any infinite dimensional subspace.
Hilbert space fusion frames are a natural extension of Hilbert space frames, extending the notion from a set of vectors in a Hilbert space to a set of subspaces of a Hilbert space with analogous notions of overcompleteness and boundedness. As tight frames are a very important topic within standard frame theory, tight fusion frames are similarly important; however, only trivial examples of tight fusion frames are hitherto known. In this paper, we apply ideas from Gabor analysis to demonstrate a non-trivial construction of tight fusion frames. We then use this construction to further show their …
This paper demonstrates that random, independently chosen equi-dimensional subspaces with a unitarily invariant distribution in a real Hilbert space provide nearly tight, nearly equiangular fusion frames. The angle between a pair of subspaces is measured in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product of the corresponding orthogonal projections. If the subspaces are selected at random, then a measure concentration argument shows that these inner products concentrate near an average value. Overwhelming success probability for near tightness and equiangularity is guaranteed if the dimension of the…
Extending Meshulam's result on the boundedness of orbits of relaxed projections onto affine subspaces from finite to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces
A Hilbert space frame on $R^n$ is {\it scalable} if we can scale the vectors to make them a tight frame. There are known classifications of scalable frames. There are two basic questions here which have never been answered in any $R^n$: Given a frame in $R^n$, how do we scale the vectors to minimize the condition number of the frame? I.e. How do we scale the frame to make it as tight as possible? If we are only allowed to use scaling numbers from the interval $[1-ε,1+ε]$, how do we scale the frame to minimize the condition number? We will answer these two questions in $R^2$ to begin the proces…
In this paper, our aim is to introduce the concept of a frame in n-Hilbert space and describe some of their properties. We further discuss tight frame relative to n-Hilbert space. At the end, we study the relationship between frame and bounded linear operator in n-Hilbert space.
The notion of a K-frame in n-Hilbert space is presented and some of their characterizations are given. We verify that sum of two K-frames is also a K-frame in n-Hilbert space. Also, the concept of tight K-frame in n-Hilbert space is described and some properties of its are going to be established.
The main purpose of our paper is a new approach to design of algorithms of Kaczmarz type in the framework of operators in Hilbert space. Our applications include a diverse list of optimization problems, new Karhunen-Loève transforms, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for digital images. A key feature of our algorithms is our use of recursive systems of projection operators. Specifically, we apply our recursive projection algorithms for new computations of PCA probabilities and of variance data. For this we also make use of specific reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, factorization for kern…
The most fundamental notion in frame theory is the frame expansion of a vector. Although it is well known that these expansions are unconditionally convergent series, no characterizations of the unconditional constant were known. This has made it impossible to get accurate quantitative estimates for problems which require using subsequences of a frame. We will prove some new results in frame theory by showing that the unconditional constants of the frame expansion of a vector in a Hilbert space are bounded by $\sqrt{\frac{B}{A}}$, where $A,B$ are the frame bounds of the frame. Tight frames thu…
In this paper, we focus on frames of operators or K-frames on Hilbert spaces in Parseval cases. Since equal-norm tight frames play important roles for robust data transmission, we aim to study this topics on Parseval K-frames. We will show that each finite set of equal-norms of vectors can be extended to an equal-norm K-frame. Also, we present a correspondence between Parseval K-frames and the set of all closed subspaces of a finite Hilbert space. Finally, a construction of equal-norm dual K-frames will be introduced.
We investigate the topological and metric structure of the set of idempotent operators and projections which have prescribed diagonal entries with respect to a fixed orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space. As an application, we settle some cases of conjectures of Larson, Dykema, and Strawn on the connectedness of the set of unit-norm tight frames.
The most fundamental notion for Hilbert space frames is the sequence of frame coefficients for a vector x in the space. Yet, we know little about the distribution of these coefficient sequences. In this paper, we make the first detailed study of the distribution of the frame coefficients for vectors in a Hilbert space, as well as the related notion of the square sums of the distances of vectors in the space from the frame vectors. We will give some surprisingly exact calculations for special frames such as unit norm tight frames and equiangular frames. This is a study which should have been do…
Let $\hil$ be a finite dimensional (real or complex) Hilbert space and let $\{a_i\}_{i=1}^\infty$ be a non-increasing sequence of positive numbers. Given a finite sequence of vectors $\f$ in $\hil$ we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of $r\in \NN\cup\{\infty\}$ and a Bessel sequence $\g$ in $\hil$ such that $\cF\cup\cG$ is a tight frame for $\hil$ and $\|g_i\|^2=a_i$ for $1\leq i\leq r$. Moreover, in this case we compute the minimum $r\in \NN\cup\{\infty\}$ with this property. Using recent results on the Schur-Horn theorem, we also obtain a not so optimal but algorith…
Continuous generalized fusion frame theory was recently introduced by Rahimi and al. Several equalities and inequalities have been obtained for frame, fusion generalized fusion frame, among others. In the present paper, we continue and extend these results to obtain some important identities and inequalities in the case of continuous generalized fusion frame, Parceval continuous generalized fusion frame, $ λ$-tight continuous generalized fusion frame. Moreover, we obtain some new inequalities for the alternate dual continuous generalized fusion frame. Finally, we obtain frame operator of a pai…
We consider frames in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space Hn where frames are exactly the spanning sets of the vector space. The diagram vector of a vector in R2 was previously defined using polar coordinates and was used to characterize tight frames in R2 in a geometric fashion. Reformulating the definition of a diagram vector in R2 we provide a natural extension of this notion to Rn and Cn. Using the diagram vectors we give a characterization of tight frames in Rn or Cn. Further we provide a characterization of when a unit-norm frame in Rn or Cn can be scaled to a tight frame. This classifica…
Motivated by the idea of $J$-frame for a Krein space $\textbf{\textit{K}}$, introduced by Giribet \textit{et al.} (J. I. Giribet, A. Maestripieri, F. Martínez Pería, P. G. Massey, \textit{On frames for Krein spaces}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. (1), {\bf 393} (2012), 122--137.), we introduce the notion of $ζ-J$-tight frame for a Krein space $\textbf{\textit{K}}$. In this paper we characterize $J$-orthonormal basis for $\textbf{\textit{K}}$ in terms of $ζ-J$-Parseval frame. We show that a Krein space is richly supplied with $ζ-J$-Parseval frames. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition wh…
We consider frames in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space Hn where frames are exactly the spanning sets of the vector space. We present a method to determine the maximum robustness of a frame. We present results on tight subframes and surgery of frames. We also answer the question of when length surgery resulting in a tight frame set for Hn is possible.
The goal of the present paper is to extend the theory of frames for countably generated Hilbert $C^*$-modules over arbitrary $C^*$-algebras. In investigating the non-unital case we introduce the concept of outer frame as a sequence in the multiplier module $M(X)$ that has the standard frame property when applied to elements of the ambient module $X$. Given a Hilbert $\A$-module $X$, we prove that there is a bijective correspondence of the set of all adjointable surjections from the generalized Hilbert space $\ell^2(\A)$ to $X$ and the set consisting of all both frames and outer frames for $X$.…
We define the frame potential for a Schauder frame on a finite dimensional Banach space as the square of the $2$-summing norm of the frame operator. As is the case for frames for Hilbert spaces, we prove that the frame potential can be used to characterize finite unit norm tight frames (FUNTFs) for finite dimensional Banach spaces. We prove the existence of FUNTFs for a variety of spaces, and in particular that every $n$-dimensional complex Banach space with a $1$-unconditional basis has a FUNTF of $N$ vectors for every $N\geq n$. However, many interesting results on FUNTFs and sums of rank on…
The Douglas-Rachford algorithm is one of the most prominent splitting algorithms for solving convex optimization problems. Recently, the method has been successful in finding a generalized solution (provided that one exists) for optimization problems in the inconsistent case, i.e., when a solution does not exist. The convergence analysis of the inconsistent case hinges on the study of the range of the displacement operator associated with the Douglas-Rachford splitting operator and the corresponding minimal displacement vector. In this paper, we provide a formula for the range of the Douglas-R…
To a generalized tight continuous frame in a Hilbert space $\H$ indexed by a locally compact space $\Si$ endowed with a Radon measure, one associates a coorbit theory converting spaces of functions on $\Si$ in spaces of vectors comparable with $\H$. If the continuous frame is provided by the action of a suitable family of bounded operators on a fixed window, a symbolic calculus emerges, assigning operators in $\H$ to functions on $\Si$. We give some criteria of relative compactness for sets and for families of compact operators, involving tightness properties in terms of objects canonically as…
We consider sets of trace-normalized non-negative operators in Hilbert-Schmidt balls that maximize their mutual Hilbert-Schmidt distance; these are optimal arrangements in the sets of purity-limited classical or quantum states on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Classical states are understood to be represented by diagonal matrices, with the diagonal entries forming a probability vector. We also introduce the concept of spectrahedron arrangements which provides a unified framework for classical and quantum arrangements and the flexibility to define new types of optimal packings. Continuing …
Outer product frames are important objects in Hilbert space frame theory. But very little is known about them. In this paper, we make the first detailed study of the family of outer product frames induced directly by vector sequences. We are interested in both the quantitative attributs of these outer product sequences (in particular, their Riesz and frame bounds), as well as their independence and spanning properties. We show that Riesz sequences of vectors yield Riesz sequences of outer products with the same (or better) Riesz bounds. Equiangular tight frames are shown to produce Riesz seque…
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a sequence of vectors in a Hilbert space that achieves equality in the Welch bound and so has minimal coherence. More generally, an equichordal tight fusion frame (ECTFF) is a sequence of equi-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space that achieves equality in Conway, Hardin and Sloane's simplex bound. Every ECTFF is a type of optimal Grassmannian code, that is, an optimal packing of equi-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space. We construct ECTFFs by exploiting new relationships between known ETFs. Harmonic ETFs equate to difference sets for finite abelian …
A $J$-frame for a Krein space $\mathcal{H}$ is in particular a frame for $\mathcal{H}$ (in the Hilbert space sense). But it is also compatible with the indefinite inner-product of $\mathcal{H}$, meaning that it determines a pair of maximal uniformly definite subspaces, an analogue to the maximal dual pair associated to an orthonormal basis in a Krein space. This work is devoted to study duality for $J$-frames in Krein spaces. Also, tight and Parseval $J$-frames are defined and characterized.
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. ETFs arise in various applications, such as waveform design for wireless communication, compressed sensing, quantum information theory and algebraic coding theory. In a recent paper, signature matrices of ETFs were constructed from abelian distance regular covers of complete graphs. We extend this work, constructing ETF synthesis operators from abelian generalized quadrangles, and vice versa. This produces a new infinite family of complex ETFs as well as a new proof of the existence of…
Hilbert space frames generalize orthonormal bases to allow redundancy in representations of vectors while keeping good reconstruction properties. A frame comes with an associated frame operator encoding essential properties of the frame. We study a polytope that arises in an algorithm for constructing all finite frames with given lengths of frame vectors and spectrum of the frame operator, which is a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. For equal norm tight frames, we give a non-redundant description of the polytope in terms of equations and inequalities. From this we obtain the dimension and number of f…
We discuss the concepts of pseudo-dual frames and approximately dual frames, and illuminate their relationship to classical frames. Approximately dual frames are easier to construct than the classical dual frames, and might be tailored to yield almost perfect reconstruction. For approximately dual frames constructed via perturbation theory, we provide a bound on the deviation from perfect reconstruction. An alternative bound is derived for the rich class of Gabor frames, by using the Walnut representation of the frame operator to estimate the deviation from equality in the duality conditions. …
A common criterion in the design of finite Hilbert space frames is minimal coherence, as this leads to error reduction in various signal processing applications. Frames that achieve minimal coherence relative to all unit-norm frames are called Grassmannian frames, a class which includes the well-known equiangular tight frames. However, the notion of "coherence minimization" varies according to the constraints of the ambient optimization problem, so there are other types of "minimally coherent" frames one can speak of. In addition to Grassmannian frames, we consider the class of frames which mi…
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in a real or complex Hilbert space. In the complex case, the existence of an ETF of a given size remains an open problem in many cases. In this paper, we observe that many of the known constructions of ETFs are of one of two types. We further provide a new method for combining a given ETF of one of these two types with an appropriate group divisible design (GDD) in order to produce a larger ETF of the same type. By applying this method to known families of ETFs and GDDs, we obtain several new infinite families of ETFs. The …
Equiangular tight frames are examples of Grassmannian line packings for a Hilbert space. More specifically, according to a bound by Welch, they are minimizers for the maximal magnitude occurring among the inner products of all pairs of vectors in a unit-norm frame. This paper is dedicated to packings in the regime in which the number of frame vectors precludes the existence of equiangular frames. The orthoplex bound then serves as an alternative to infer a geometric structure of optimal designs. We construct frames of unit-norm vectors in $K$-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces that achieve the…
An equichordal tight fusion frame (ECTFF) is a finite sequence of equi-dimensional subspaces of a finite-dimensional Hilbert space that achieves equality in Conway, Hardin and Sloane's simplex bound. Every ECTFF is a type of optimal Grassmannian code, being a way to arrange a given number of members of a Grassmannian so that the minimal chordal distance between any pair of them is as large as possible. Any nontrivial ECTFF has both a Naimark complement and spatial complement which themselves are ECTFFs. It turns out that whenever the number of subspaces is at least five, taking iterated altern…
We consider the space F^E_{k,n} of all spherical tight frames of k vectors in real or complex n--dimensional Hilbert space E^n, i.e. E=R or E=C, and its orbit space G^E_{k,n}=F^E_{k,n}/O^E_n under the obvious action of the group O^E_n of structure preserving transformations of E^n. We show that the quotient map F^E_{k,n} -> G^E_{k,n} is a locally trivial fiber bundle (also in the more general case of ellipsoidal tight frames) and that there is a homeomorphism G^E_{k,n} -> G^E_{k,k-n}. We show that G^E_{k,n} and F^E_{k,n} are real manifolds whenever k and n are relatively prime, and we describe…
We describe a connection between two seemingly different problems: (a) the construction of projections in noncommutative tori, (b) the construction of tight Gabor frames. The present investigation relies an interpretation of projective modules over noncommutative tori in terms of Gabor analysis. The main result demonstrates that Rieffel's condition on the existence of projections in noncommutative tori is equivalent to the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality relations for tight Gabor frames. Therefore we are able to invoke results on the existence of Gabor frames in the construction of projections in n…
A frame in an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space $H_n$ is a possibly redundant collection of vectors $\{f_i\}_{i\in I}$ that span the space. A tight frame is a generalization of an orthonormal basis. A frame $\{f_i\}_{i\in I}$ is said to be scalable if there exist nonnegative scalars $\{c_i\}_{i\in I}$ such that $\{c_if_i\}_{i\in I}$ is a tight frame. In this paper we study the combinatorial structure of frames and their decomposition into tight or scalable subsets by using partially-ordered sets (posets). We define the factor poset of a frame $\{f_i\}_{i\in I}$ to be a collection of subsets of $I$…
So far there has not been paid attention to frames that are balanced, i.e. those frames which sum is zero. In this paper we consider balanced frames, and in particular balanced unit norm tight frames, in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Here we discover various advantages of balanced unit norm tight frames in signal processing. They give an exact reconstruction in the presence of systematic errors in the transmitted coefficients, and are optimal when these coefficients are corrupted with noises that can have non-zero mean. Moreover, using balanced frames we can know that the transmitted coef…
