A formula for the dimension of the space of cuspidal modular forms on $Γ_0(N)$ of weight $k$ ($k\ge2$ even) has been known for several decades. More recent but still well-known is the Atkin-Lehner decomposition of this space of cusp forms into subspaces corresponding to newforms on $Γ_0(d)$ of weight $k$, as $d$ runs over the divisors of $N$. A recursive algorithm for computing the dimensions of these spaces of newforms follows from the combination of these two results, but it would be desirable to have a formula in closed form for these dimensions. In this paper we establish such a closed-form formula, not only for these dimensions, but also for the corresponding dimensions of spaces of newforms on $Γ_1(N)$ of weight $k$ ($k\ge2$). This formula is much more amenable to analysis and to computation. For example, we derive asymptotically sharp upper and lower bounds for these dimensions, and we compute their average orders; even for the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms, these results are new. We also establish sharp inequalities for the special case of weight-2 newforms on $Γ_0(N)$, and we report on extensive computations of these dimensions: we find the complete list of all $N$ such that the dimension of the space of weight-2 newforms on $Γ_0(N)$ is less than or equal to 100 (previous such results had only gone up to dimension 3).
This paper studies the Fourier expansion of Hecke-Maass eigenforms for $GL(2, \mathbb Q)$ of arbitrary weight, level, and character at various cusps. Translating well known results in the theory of adelic automorphic representations into classical language, a multiplicative expression for the Fourier coefficients at any cusp is derived. In general, this expression involves Fourier coefficients at several different cusps. A sufficient condition for the existence of multiplicative relations among Fourier coefficients at a single cusp is given. It is shown that if the level is 4 times (or in some…
The aim of this article is to study the fields generated by the Fourier coefficients of Hilbert newforms at arbitrary cusps. Precisely, given a cuspidal Hilbert newform $f$ and a matrix $σ$ in (a suitable conjugate of) the Hilbert modular group, we give a cyclotomic extension of the field generated by the Fourier coefficients at infinity which contains all the Fourier coefficients of $f||_kσ$.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ of conductor $N$. We obtain an explicit formula, as a product of local terms, for the ramification index at each cusp of a modular parametrization of $E$ by $X_0(N)$. Our formula shows that the ramification index always divides 24, a fact that had been previously conjectured by Brunault as a result of numerical computations. In fact, we prove a more general result which gives the order of vanishing at each cusp of a holomorphic newform of arbitary level, weight and character, provided its field of rationality satisfies a certain condition. The abo…
We describe an algorithm that we used to compute the q-expansions of all weight 2 cusp forms of prime level at most 2,000,000 and dimension at most 6. We also present an algorithm that we used to verify that there was only one cusp form of dimension 7 or more per Atkin-Lehner eigenspace for prime levels between 10,000 and 1,000,000. Our algorithm is based on Mestre's Méthode des Graphes, and involves supersingular isogeny graphs and Wiedemann's algorithm for finding the minimal polynomial of sparse matrices over finite fields.
Let $(P_d)$ be any prime of $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ of degree $d$ and consider the space of Drinfeld cusp forms of level $P_d$, i.e. for the modular group $Γ_0(P_d)$. We provide a definition for oldforms and newforms of level $P_d$. Moreover, when the dimension of the vector space of oldforms is one and $P_1=t$ we prove that the space of cuspforms of level $t$ is the direct sum of oldforms and newforms and that the Hecke operator $\mathbf{T}_t$ acting on Drinfeld cusp forms of level 1 is injective, thus providing more evidence for the conjectures presented and stated in [2] and [3].

Let $f$ be a Hecke--Maass cuspidal newform of square-free level $N$ and Laplacian eigenvalue $λ$. It is shown that $\pnorm{f}_\infty \ll_{λ,ε} N^{-1/6}+ε} \pnorm{f}_2$ for any $ε>0$.
We compute the space $S_2(K(N))$ of weight $2$ Siegel paramodular cusp forms of squarefree level $N<300$. In conformance with the paramodular conjecture of A. Brumer and K. Kramer, the space is only the additive (Gritsenko) lift space of the Jacobi cusp form space $J_{2,N}^{\text{cusp}}$ except for $N=249,295$, when it further contains one nonlift newform. For these two values of $N$, the Hasse-Weil $p$-Euler factors of a relevant abelian surface match the spin $p$-Euler factors of the nonlift newform for the first two primes $p\nmid N$.
We prove congruences between cuspidal newforms and Eisenstein series of prime level, which generalize Ramanujan's congruence. Such congruences were recently found by Billerey and Menares, and we refine them by specifying the Atkin-Lehner eigenvalue of the newform involved. We show that similar refinements hold for the level raising congruences between cuspidal newforms of different levels, due to Ribet and Diamond. The proof relies on studying the new subspace and the Eisenstein subspace of the space of period polynomials for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, and on a version of Ihara's lemma.
In this note, we describe a conjecture, that, for an odd prime p, relates special values of a cup product pairing on cyclotomic p-units in the pth cyclotomic field to the L-values of newforms satisfying modulo p congruences with Eisenstein series.
We introduce a new trace formula of Kuznetsov type involving the central standard L-values and the Whittaker periods of cuspidal automorphic representations of PGL_n(Q) which are spherical at the archimedean place. As an application, we show a simultaneous non-vanishing of standard L-values at n-1 points on the critical strip for infinitely many Hecke-Maass cuspidal newforms.
In this paper, we discuss questions related to the oscillatory behavior and the equidistribution of signs for certain subfamilies of Fourier coefficients of integral weight newforms with a non-trivial nebentypus as well as Fourier coefficients of eigenforms of half-integral weight reachable by the Shimura correspondence.
Let f traverse a sequence of classical holomorphic newforms of fixed weight and increasing squarefree level q tending to infinity. We prove that the pushforward of the mass of f to the modular curve of level 1 equidistributes with respect to the Poincaré measure. Our result answers affirmatively the squarefree level case of a conjecture spelled out by Kowalski, Michel and Vanderkam (2002) in the spirit of a conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). Our proof follows the strategy of Holowinsky and Soundararajan (2008) who show that newforms of level 1 and large weight have equidistributed mass. …
We study the simultaneous sign change of Fourier coefficients of a pair of distinct normalized newforms of integral weight supported on primes power indices, we also prove some equidistribution results. Finally, we consider an analogous question for Fourier coefficients of a pair of half-integral weight Hecke eigenforms.
We derive an explicit formula for the trace of an arbitrary Hecke operator on spaces of twist-minimal holomorphic cusp forms with arbitrary level and character, and weight at least 2. We show that this formula provides an efficient way of computing basis elements for newform or cusp form spaces. This work was motivated by the development of a twist-minimal trace formula in the non-holomorphic case by Booker, Lee and Strömbergsson, as well as the presentation of a fully generalised trace formula for the holomorphic case by Cohen and Strömberg.
We prove a bound for the Fourier coefficients of a cusp form of integral weight which is not a newform by computing an explicit orthogonal basis for the space of cusp forms of given integral weight and level. In contrast to previous work on special cases of this problem we use elementary methods for the computation of Petersson products and avoid using the Rankin $L$-function.
The present paper deals with Atkin-Lehner theory for Drinfeld modular forms. We provide an equivalent definition of $\mathfrak{p}$-newforms (which makes computations easier) and commutativity results between Hecke operators and Atkin-Lehner involutions. As applications we show a criterion for a direct sum decomposition of cusp forms, we exibit $\mathfrak{p}$-newforms arising from lower levels and we provide $\mathfrak{p}$-adic Drinfeld modular forms of level greater than 1.
Let f be an L^2-normalized Hecke--Maass cuspidal newform of level N and Laplace eigenvalue λ. It is shown that |f|_\infty <<_{λ, ε} N^{-1/12 + ε} for any ε>0. The exponent is further improved in the case when N is not divisible by "small squares". Our work extends and generalizes previously known results in the special case of N squarefree.
We define oldforms and newforms for Drinfeld cusp forms of level $t$ and conjecture that their direct sum is the whole space of cusp forms. Moreover we describe explicitly the matrix $U$ associated to the action of the Atkin operator $\mathbf{U}_t$ on cusp forms of level $t$ and use it to compute tables of slopes of eigenforms. Building on such data, we formulate conjectures on bounds for slopes, on the diagonalizability of $\mathbf{U}_t$ and on various other issues. Via the explicit form of the matrix $U$ we are then able to verify our conjectures in various cases (mainly in small weights).
We prove effective forms of the Sato-Tate conjecture for holomorphic cuspidal newforms which improve on the author's previous work (solo and joint with Lemke Oliver). We also prove an effective form of the joint Sato-Tate distribution for two twist-inequivalent newforms. Our results are unconditional because of recent work of Newton and Thorne.
We find explicit change-of-basis formulas between Eisenstein series attached to cusps, and newform Eisenstein series attached to pairs of primitive Dirichlet characters. As a consequence, we prove a Bruggeman-Kuznetsov formula for newforms of square-free level and trivial nebentypus. We also derive, in explicit form, the Fourier expansion, Hecke eigenvalues, Atkin-Lehner pseudo-eigenvalues, and other data associated to these Eisenstein series, with arbitrary integer weight, level, and nebentypus.
We give a summary of results for dimensions of spaces of cuspidal Siegel modular forms of degree 2. These results together with a list of dimensions of the irreducible representations of the finite groups GSp(4,Fp) are then used to produce bounds for dimensions of spaces of newforms with respect to principal congruence subgroups of odd square-free level.
We refine known dimension formulas for spaces of cusp forms of squarefree level, determining the dimension of subspaces generated by newforms both with prescribed global root numbers and with prescribed local signs of Atkin-Lehner operators. This yields precise results on the distribution of signs of global functional equations and sign patterns of Atkin-Lehner eigenvalues, refining and generalizing earlier results of Iwaniec, Luo and Sarnak. In particular, we exhibit a strict bias towards root number +1 and a phenomenon that sign patterns are biased in the weight but perfectly equidistributed…
We study the signs of the Fourier coefficients of a newform. Let $f$ be a normalized newform of weight $k$ for $Γ_0(N)$. Let $a_f(n)$ be the $n$th Fourier coefficient of $f$. For any fixed positive integer $m$, we study the distribution of the signs of $\{a_f(p^m)\}_p$, where $p$ runs over all prime numbers. We also find out the abscissas of absolute convergence of two Dirichlet series with coefficients involving the Fourier coefficients of cusp forms and the coefficients of symmetric power $L$-functions.
We derive a formula for Greenberg's $L$-invariant of Tate twists of the symmetric sixth power of an ordinary non-CM cuspidal newform of weight $\geq4$, under some technical assumptions. This requires a "sufficiently rich" Galois deformation of the symmetric cube which we obtain from the symmetric cube lift to $\GSp(4)_{/\QQ}$ of Ramakrishnan--Shahidi and the Hida theory of this group developed by Tilouine--Urban. The $L$-invariant is expressed in terms of derivatives of Frobenius eigenvalues varying in the Hida family. Our result suggests that one could compute Greenberg's $L$-invariant of all…
We consider the Rankin-Selberg L-functions associated with a fixed modular form of full level and holomorphic cuspidal newforms of large even weight, fixed level and fixed primitive nebentypus. We compute the second moment of this family in fairly general ranges, and obtain an asymptotic formula with a power saving error term. A special case treats the fourth moment of L-functions associated with holomorphic cusp forms.
Let $k$ be an odd integer $\ge 3$ and $N$ a positive integer such that $4 \mid N$. Let $χ$ be an even Dirichlet character modulo $N$. Shimura decomposes the space of half-integral weight cusp forms $S_{k/2}(N,χ)$ as a direct sum of $S_0(N,χ)$ (the subspace spanned by 1-variable theta- series) and $S_{k/2}(N,χ,ϕ)$ where $ϕ$ runs through a certain family of integral weight newforms. The explicit computation of this decomposition is important for practical applications of a theorem of Waldspurger relating critical values of $L$-functions of quadratic twists of newforms of even weight to coefficie…
In this paper we exhibit a noncongruence subgroup $\G$ whose space of weight 3 cusp forms $S_3(\G)$ admits a basis satisfying the Atkin-Swinnerton-Dyer congruence relations with two weight 3 newforms for certain congruence subgroups. This gives a modularity interpretation of the motive attached to $S_3(\G)$ by A. Scholl and also verifies the Atkin-Swinnerton-Dyer congruence conjecture for this space.
We compare the homology of a congruence subgroup Gamma of GL_2(Z) with coefficients in the Steinberg modules over Q and over E, where E is a real quadratic field. If R is any commutative base ring, the last connecting homomorphism psi_{Gamma,E} in the long exact sequence of homology stemming from this comparison has image in H_0(Gamma, St(Q^2;R)) generated by classes z_βindexed by beta in E \ Q. We investigate this image. When R=C, H_0(Gamma, St(Q^2;C)) is isomorphic to a space of classical modular forms of weight 2, and the image lies inside the cuspidal part. In this case, z_beta is closely …
We investigate the pair correlation statistics for sequences arising from Hecke eigenvalues with respect to spaces of primitive modular cusp forms. We derive the average pair correlation function of Hecke angles lying in small subintervals of $[0,1]$. The averaging is done over non-CM newforms of weight $k$ with respect to $Γ_0(N).$ We also derive similar statistics for Hilbert modular forms and modular forms on hyperbolic 3-spaces.
The Galois representations associated to weight $1$ newforms over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ are remarkable in that they are unramified at $p$, but the computation of weight $1$ modular forms has proven to be difficult. One complication in this setting is that a weight $1$ cusp form over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ need not arise from reducing a weight $1$ cusp form over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. In this article we propose a unified "Hecke stability method" for computing spaces of weight $1$ modular forms of a given level in all characteristics simultaneously. Our main theorems outline conditions under which a f…
The goal of this paper is to explain certain experimentally observed properties of the (cuspidal) spectrum and its associated automorphic forms (Maass waveforms) on the congruence subgroup $Γ_{0}(9)$. The first property is that the spectrum possesses multiplicities in the so-called new part, where it was previously believed to be simple. The second property is that the spectrum does not contain any "genuinely new" eigenvalues, in the sense that all eigenvalues of $Γ_{0}(9)$ appear in the spectrum of some congruence subgroup of lower level. The main theorem in this paper gives a precise decompo…
In 2000 Iwaniec, Luo, and Sarnak proved for certain families of $L$-functions associated to holomorphic newforms of square-free level that, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, as the conductors tend to infinity the one-level density of their zeros matches the one-level density of eigenvalues of large random matrices from certain classical compact groups in the appropriate scaling limit. We remove the square-free restriction by obtaining a trace formula for arbitrary level by using a basis developed by Blomer and Milićević, which is of use for other problems as well.
We construct harmonic weak Maass forms that map to cusp forms of weight $k\geq 2$ with rational coefficients under the $ξ$-operator. This generalizes work of the first author, Griffin, Ono, and Rolen, who constructed distinguished preimages under this differential operator of weight $2$ newforms associated to rational elliptic curves using the classical Weierstrass theory of elliptic functions. We extend this theory and construct a vector-valued Jacobi--Weierstrass $ζ$-function which is a generalization of the classical Weierstrass $ζ$-function.
Let f be a newform of weight at least 3 with Fourier coefficients in a number field K. We show that the universal deformation ring of the mod lambda Galois representation associated to f is unobstructed, and thus isomorphic to a power series ring in three variables over the Witt vectors, for all but finitely many primes lambda of K. We give an explicit bound on such lambda for the six known cusp forms of level 1, trivial character, and rational Fourier coefficients. We also prove a slightly weaker result for weight 2.
In this paper, we study solutions to $h=af^2+bfg+g^2$, where $f,g,h$ are Hecke newforms with respect to $Γ_1(N)$ of weight $k>2$ and $a,b\neq 0$. We show that the number of solutions is finite for all $N$. Assuming Maeda's conjecture, we prove that the Petersson inner product $\langle f^2,g\rangle$ is nonzero, where $f$ and $g$ are any nonzero cusp eigenforms for $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $k$ and $2k$, respectively. As a corollary, we obtain that, assuming Maeda's conjecture, identities between cusp eigenforms for $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ of the form $X^2+\sum_{i=1}^n α_iY_i=0$ all are forced by …
We prove an explicit integral representation -- involving the pullback of a suitable Siegel Eisenstein series -- for the twisted standard $L$-function associated to a holomorphic vector-valued Siegel cusp form of degree $n$ and arbitrary level. In contrast to all previously proved pullback formulas in this situation, our formula involves only scalar-valued functions despite being applicable to $L$-functions of vector-valued Siegel cusp forms. The key new ingredient in our method is a novel choice of local vectors at the archimedean place which allows us to exactly compute the archimedean local…
Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $PGL_2(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ of arithmetic conductor $C$ and archimedean parameter $T$, and let $ϕ$ be an $L^2$-normalized automorphic form in the space of $π$. The sup-norm problem asks for bounds on $\| ϕ\|_\infty$ in terms of $C$ and $T$. The quantum unique ergodicity (QUE) problem concerns the limiting behavior of the $L^2$-mass $|ϕ|^2 (g) \, d g$ of $ϕ$. All previous work on these problems in the conductor-aspect has focused on the case that $ϕ$ is a newform. In this work, we study these problems for a class of automorphic forms that a…
For every normalized newform f in S_2(Gamma_1(N)) with complex multiplication, we study the modular parametrizations of elliptic curves C from the abelian variety A_f. We apply the results obtained when C is Gross's elliptic curve A(p).
We show that every Fricke invariant meromorphic modular form for $Γ_0(N)$ whose divisor on $X_0(N)$ is defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and supported on Heegner divisors and the cusps is a generalized Borcherds product associated to a harmonic Maass form of weight $1/2$. Further, we derive a criterion for the finiteness of the multiplier systems of generalized Borcherds products in terms of the vanishing of the central derivatives of $L$-function of certain weight $2$ newforms. We also prove similar results for twisted Borcherds products.
The standard realization of the Hecke algebra on classical holomorphic cusp forms and the corresponding period polynomials is well known. In this article we consider a nonstandard realization of the Hecke algebra on Maass cusp forms for the Hecke congruence subgroups Gamma_0(n). We show that the vector valued period functions derived recently by Hilgert, Mayer and Movasati as special eigenfunctions of the transfer operator for Gamma_0(n) are indeed related to the Maass cusp forms for these groups. This leads also to a simple interpretation of the ``Hecke like'' operators of these authors in te…
We report on a computation of holomorphic cuspidal modular forms of weight one and small level (currently level at most $1500$) and classification of them according to the projective image of their attached Artin representations. The data we have gathered, such as Fourier expansions and projective images of Hecke newforms and dimensions of space of forms, is available in both Magma and \texttt{Sage} readable formats on a webpage created in support of this ongoing project. We explain some of the novel aspects of these computations and what they have uncovered.
