Let $(P_d)$ be any prime of $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ of degree $d$ and consider the space of Drinfeld cusp forms of level $P_d$, i.e. for the modular group $Γ_0(P_d)$. We provide a definition for oldforms and newforms of level $P_d$. Moreover, when the dimension of the vector space of oldforms is one and $P_1=t$ we prove that the space of cuspforms of level $t$ is the direct sum of oldforms and newforms and that the Hecke operator $\mathbf{T}_t$ acting on Drinfeld cusp forms of level 1 is injective, thus providing more evidence for the conjectures presented and stated in [2] and [3].
We show that the Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansion that have been constructed by the author are precisely the hyperderivatives of the subfamily of single-cuspidal Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions that remain modular after hyperdifferentiation. In addition, we show that Drinfeld-Poincaré series display a similar behavior with respect to hyperdifferentiation, giving indirect evidence that the Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions are Drinfeld-Poincaré series. The Drinfeld-Poincaré series that we consider generalize previous examples of such series by Gekeler, and Gerritzen…
Let $k\geq 2$ and $n\geq 1$ be any integers. In this paper, we prove that all Hecke operators act trivially on the space of ordinary Drinfeld cuspforms of level $Γ_1(t^n)$ and weight $k$.
In this paper, we study the Drinfeld cusp forms for $Γ_1(T)$ and $Γ(T)$ using Teitelbaum's interpretation as harmonic cocycles. We obtain explicit eigenvalues of Hecke operators associated to degree one prime ideals acting on the cusp forms for $Γ_1(T)$ of small weights and conclude that these Hecke operators are simultaneously diagonalizable. We also show that the Hecke operators are not diagonalizable in general for $Γ_1(T)$ of large weights, and not for $Γ(T)$ even of small weights. The Hecke eigenvalues on cusp forms for $Γ(T)$ with small weights are determined and the eigenspaces characte…
We study the diagonalizability of the Atkin $U_t$-operator acting on Drinfeld cusp forms for $Γ_1(t)$ and $Γ(t)$ using Teitelbaum's interpretation as harmonic cocycles. For small weights $k\leqslant 2q$, we prove $U_t$ is diagonalizable in odd characteristic and we point out that non diagonalizability in even characteristic depends on antidiagonal blocks.
We define oldforms and newforms for Drinfeld cusp forms of level $t$ and conjecture that their direct sum is the whole space of cusp forms. Moreover we describe explicitly the matrix $U$ associated to the action of the Atkin operator $\mathbf{U}_t$ on cusp forms of level $t$ and use it to compute tables of slopes of eigenforms. Building on such data, we formulate conjectures on bounds for slopes, on the diagonalizability of $\mathbf{U}_t$ and on various other issues. Via the explicit form of the matrix $U$ we are then able to verify our conjectures in various cases (mainly in small weights).
We study the diagonalizability of the Atkin $U$-operator acting on Drinfeld cusp forms for $Γ_1(t)$ and $Γ(t)$ using Teitelbaum's interpretation as harmonic cocycles. We prove $U$ is diagonalizable for small weights and explicitly compute the eigenvalues. We also formulate a conjecture, supported by numerical search and proofs in some special cases, about non diagonalizability of $U$ in even characteristic.
There are various reasons why a naive analog of the Maeda conjecture has to fail for Drinfeld cusp forms. Focussing on double cusp forms and using the link found by Teitelbaum between Drinfeld cusp forms and certain harmonic cochains, we observed a while ago that all obvious counterexamples disappear for certain Hecke-invariant subquotients of spaces of Drinfeld cusp forms of fixed weight, which can be defined naturally via representation theory. The present work extends Teitelbaum's isomorphism to an adelic setting and to arbitrary levels, it makes precise the impact of representation theory,…
Let $p$ be a rational prime and $q>1$ a $p$-power. Let $S_k(Γ_1(t))$ be the space of Drinfeld cuspforms of level $Γ_1(t)$ and weight $k$ for $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$. For any non-negative rational number $α$, we denote by $d(k,α)$ the dimension of the slope $α$ generalized eigenspace for the $U$-operator acting on $S_k(Γ_1(t))$. In this paper, we prove a function field analogue of the Gouvêa-Mazur conjecture for this setting. Namely, we show that for any $α\leq m$ and $k_1,k_2>α+1$, if $k_1\equiv k_2 \bmod p^m$, then $d(k_1,α)=d(k_2,α)$.
We study the diagonalizability of the Atkin $U_t$-operator acting on Drinfeld cusp forms for $Γ_0(t)$: starting with the slopes of eigenvalues and then moving to the space of cusp forms for $Γ_1(t)$ to use Teitelbaum's interpretation as harmonic cocycles which makes computations more explicit. We prove $U_t$ is diagonalizable in odd characteristic for (relatively) small weights and explicitly compute the eigenvalues. In even characteristic we show that it is not diagonalizable when the weight is odd (except for the trivial cases) and prove some cases of non diagonalizability in even weight as …
Let $\frak{n}$ be a square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety $J_0(\frak{n})$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{n})$. We prove that for any prime number $\ell$ not dividing $q(q-1)$, the $\ell$-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the $\ell$-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime $\ell$ not dividing $q-1$.
In this paper, let $ϕ$ be the Drinfeld module over $\mathbb{F}_{q}(T)$ of prime rank $r$ defined by $$ϕ_T=T+τ^{r-1}+T^{q-1}τ^r.$$ We prove that under certain condition on $\mathbb{F}_q$, the adelic Galois representation $$ρ_ϕ:{\rm{Gal}}(\mathbb{F}_q(T)^{\rm{sep}}/\mathbb{F}_q(T))\longrightarrow \varprojlim_{\mathfrak{a}}{\rm{Aut}}(ϕ[\mathfrak{a}])\cong {\rm{GL_r}}(\widehat{A})$$ is surjective.
We obtain a closed form polynomial expression for certain coefficients of Drinfeld-Goss double-cuspidal modular forms which are eigenforms for the degree one Hecke operators with power eigenvalues, and we use those formulas to prove vanishing results for an infinite family of those coefficients.
We compute the first and second moments of the divisor-counting function for the Euler-Poincaré characteristic and the trace of Frobenius for the reductions modulo $p$ of a rank 2 Drinfeld module with nontrivial endomorphism ring, as the prime $p$ varies over the primes of ordinary reduction of the Drinfeld module. From these moments we derive the normal order of the number of prime divisors of these invariants.
For each positive integer $r$, we construct a nowhere-vanishing, single-cuspidal Drinfeld modular form for $\GL_r(\FF_q[θ])$, necessarily of least possible weight, via determinants using rigid analytic trivializations of the universal Drinfeld module of rank $r$ and deformations of vectorial Eisenstein series. Along the way, we deduce that the cycle class map from de Rham cohomology to Betti cohomology is an isomorphism for Drinfeld modules of all ranks over $\FF_q[θ]$.
The present paper deals with Atkin-Lehner theory for Drinfeld modular forms. We provide an equivalent definition of $\mathfrak{p}$-newforms (which makes computations easier) and commutativity results between Hecke operators and Atkin-Lehner involutions. As applications we show a criterion for a direct sum decomposition of cusp forms, we exibit $\mathfrak{p}$-newforms arising from lower levels and we provide $\mathfrak{p}$-adic Drinfeld modular forms of level greater than 1.
Let $k$ be a global function field with field of constants $\Fr$ and let $\infty$ be a fixed place of $k$. In his habilitation thesis \cite{boc2}, Gebhard Böckle attaches abelian Galois representations to characteristic $p$ valued cusp eigenforms and double cusp eigenforms \cite{go1} such that Hecke eigenvalues correspond to the image of Frobenius elements. In the case where $k=\Fr(T)$ and $\infty$ corresponds to the pole of $T$, it then becomes reasonable to ask whether rank 1 Drinfeld modules over $k$ are themselves ``modular'' in that their Galois representations arise from a cusp or double…
We introduce the notion of Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions, where instead of the usual Fourier expansion in $t^n$ ($t$ being the uniformizer at `infinity'), parametrized by $n \in \mathbb{N}$, we look at expansions in $t_a$, parametrized by $a \in A = \Fq [T]$. We construct an infinite family of eigenforms with $A$-expansions. Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions have many desirable properties that allow us to explicitly compute the Hecke action. The applications of our results include: (i) various congruences between Drinfeld eigenforms; (ii) the computation of the eigensyste…
Let $p$ be a rational prime and $q$ a power of $p$. Let $\wp$ be a monic irreducible polynomial of degree $d$ in $\mathbf{F}_q[t]$. In this paper, we define an analogue of the Hodge-Tate map which is suitable for the study of Drinfeld modules over $\mathbf{F}_q[t]$ and, using it, develop a geometric theory of $\wp$-adic Drinfeld modular forms similar to Katz's theory in the case of elliptic modular forms. In particular, we show that for Drinfeld modular forms with congruent Fourier coefficients at $\infty$ modulo $\wp^n$, their weights are also congruent modulo $(q^d-1)p^{\lceil \log_p(n)\rcei…
We construct a compactification of the moduli space of Drinfeld modules of rank $r$ and level $N$ as a moduli space of $A$-reciprocal maps. This is closely related to the Satake compactification, but not exactly the same. The construction involves some technical assumptions on $N$ that are satisfied for a cofinal set of ideals $N$. In the special case $A={\mathbb F}_q[t]$ and $N=(t^n)$ we obtain a presentation for the graded ideal of Drinfeld cusp forms of level $N$ and all weights and can deduce a dimension formula for the space of cusp forms of any weight. We expect the same results in gener…
In~\cite{CS04}, Calegari and Stein studied the congruences between classical cusp forms $S_k(Γ_0(p))$ of prime level and made several conjectures about them. In~\cite{AB07} (resp., ~\cite{BP11}) the authors proved one of those conjectures (resp., their generalizations). In this article, we study the analogous conjecture and its generalizations for Drinfeld modular forms.
Let ϕ be a Drinfeld A-module of characteristic p0 over a finitely generated field K. Previous articles determined the image of the absolute Galois group of K up to commensurability in its action on all prime-to-p0 torsion points of ϕ, or equivalently, on the prime-to-p0 adelic Tate module of ϕ. In this article we consider in addition a finitely generated torsion free A-submodule M of K for the action of A through ϕ. We determine the image of the absolute Galois group of K up to commensurability in its action on the prime-to-p0 division hull of M, or equivalently, on the extended prime-to-p0 ad…
Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $a \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ and $u \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$. Provided $q \geq 17$, we compute the average number of primes $p$ for which the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius at $p$ is $X^2 - aX + up$ over a family of rank 2 Drinfeld $ \mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules. Our results give asymptotic formulas in the $x$-limit.
In this article we prove level raising for cuspidal eigenforms modulo prime powers (for odd primes) of weight $k\geq 2$ and arbitrary character, extending the result in weight two established by the work of Tsaknias and Wiese and generalizing (partially) Diamond-Ribet's celebrated level raising theorems.
Let $F_\infty=\mathbb{F}_q(\!(1/T)\!)$ be the completion of $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ at $1/T$. We develop a theory of Fourier expansions for harmonic cochains on the edges of the Bruhat-Tits building of $\mathrm{PGL}_r(F_\infty)$, $r\geq 2$, generalizing an earlier construction of Gekeler for $r=2$. We then apply this theory to study modular units on the Drinfeld symmetric space $Ω^r$ over $F_\infty$, and the cuspidal divisor groups of Satake compactifications of certain Drinfeld modular varieties. In particular, we obtain a higher dimensional analogue of a result of Ogg for classical modular curves …
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}$ of the modular curve $X_0(N)$ of level $N$ with respect to a reduced divisor consisting of all cusps. Supposing $N$ is square free, we explicitly determine the structure of the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational torsion points on $\widetilde{J}$ up to $6$-primary torsion. The result turns out to be very different from the case of prime power level previously studied by Yang and the second author. We also obtain an analogous result for Drinfeld modular curves. Our proof relies on similar results for classical Jacobians due to Ohta, Papikian and the first …
In this paper, we investigate sign changes of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight cusp forms. In a fixed square class $t\mathbb{Z}^2$, we investigate the sign changes in the $tp^2$-th coefficient as $p$ runs through the split or inert primes over the ring of integers in a quadratic extension of the rationals. We show that sign changes occur in both sets of primes when there exists a prime dividing the discriminant of the field which does not divide the level of the cusp form and find an explicit condition that determines whether sign changes occur when every prime dividing the discrim…
We prove the non-vanishing of special $L$-values of cuspidal automorphic forms on GL(2) twisted by Hecke characters of prime power orders and totally split prime power conductors. Main ingredients of the proof are estimating the Galois averages of fast convergent series expressions of special $L$-values and considering Shintani cone decomposition.
Let $ψ: A \to F\{τ\}$ be a Drinfeld $A$-module over $F$ of rank 2 and without complex multiplication, where $A = {\mathbb{F}}_q[T]$, $F = {\mathbb{F}}_q(T)$, and $q$ is an odd prime power. For a prime $\mathfrak{p} = p A$ of $A$ of good reduction for $ψ$ and with residue field ${\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}$, we study the growth of the absolute value $|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}|$ of the discriminant of the ${\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}$-endomorphism ring of the reduction of $ψ$ modulo $\mathfrak{p}$. We prove that for all $\mathfrak{p}$, $|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}|$ grows with $|p|$. Moreover, we prove that for a…
Let F in S_k(Sp(2g, Z)) be a cuspidal Siegel eigenform of genus g with normalized Hecke eigenvalues mu_F(n). Suppose that the associated automorphic representation pi_F is locally tempered everywhere. For each c>0 we consider the set of primes p for which |mu_F(p)| >= c and we provide an explicit upper bound on the density of this set. In the case g=2, we also provide an explicit upper bound on the density of the set of primes p for which mu_F(p) >= c.
Let $ψ$ be a generic Drinfeld module of rank $r \geq 2$. We study the first elementary divisor $d_{1, \wp}(ψ)$ of the reduction of $ψ$ modulo a prime $\wp$, as $\wp$ varies. In particular, we prove the existence of the density of the primes $\wp$ for which $d_{1, \wp} (ψ)$ is fixed. For $r = 2$, we also study the second elementary divisor (the exponent) of the reduction of $ψ$ modulo $\wp$ and prove that, on average, it has a large norm. Our work is motivated by the study of J.-P. Serre of an elliptic curve analogue of Artin's Primitive Root Conjecture, and, moreover, by refinements to Serre's…
This article is divided in two parts. In the first part we endow a certain ring of ``Drinfeld quasi-modular forms'' for $\GL_2(\FF_q[T])$ (where $q$ is a power of a prime) with a system of "divided derivatives" (or hyperderivations). This ring contains Drinfeld modular forms as defined by Gekeler in \cite{Ge}, and the hyperdifferential ring obtained should be considered as a close analogue in positive characteristic of famous Ramanujan's differential system relating to the first derivatives of the classical Eisenstein series of weights 2, 4 and 6. In the second part of this article we prove th…
Let $F$ be a function field over $\mathbb{F}_q$, $A$ its ring of regular functions outside a place $\infty$ and $\mathfrak{p}$ a prime ideal of $A$. First, we develop Hida theory for Drinfeld modular forms of rank $r$ which are of slope zero for a suitably defined Hecke operator $\mathrm{U}_{\mathfrak{p}}$. Second, we show the existence in the finite slope case of families of Drinfeld modular forms varying continuously with respect to the weight. Finally, we show a classicity result: an overconvergent Drinfeld modular form of sufficiently small slope with respect to the weight is a classical D…
Let q be a prime power and E a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over Fq(T) given by a Weierstrass model. We survey the construction, with an explicit point of view, of the modular parametrization of E by the associated Drinfeld modular curve. We then prove a formula that allows us to evaluate this modular parametrization at cusps and we produce an explicit method to compute these values. Finally we illustrate our results with several examples in characteristic 2 and 3.
Let $p$ be a rational prime, $v_p$ the normalized $p$-adic valuation on $\mathbb{Z}$, $q>1$ a $p$-power and $A=\mathbb{F}_q[t]$. Let $\wp\in A$ be an irreducible polynomial and $\mathfrak{n}\in A$ a non-zero element which is prime to $\wp$. Let $k\geq 2$ and $r\geq 1$ be integers. We denote by $S_k(Γ_1(\mathfrak{n}\wp^r))$ the space of Drinfeld cuspforms of level $Γ_1(\mathfrak{n}\wp^r)$ and weight $k$ for $A$. Let $n\geq 1$ be an integer and $a\geq 0$ a rational number. Suppose that $\mathfrak{n}\wp$ has a prime factor of degree one and the generalized eigenspace in $S_k(Γ_1(\mathfrak{n}\wp^r…
Let $\goth E(\goth p)$ denote the Eisenstein ideal in the Hecke algebra $\Bbb T(\goth p)$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\goth p)$ parameterizing Drinfeld modules of rank two over $\Bbb F_q[T]$ of general characteristic with Hecke level $\goth p$-structure, where $\goth p\triangleleft\Bbb F_q[T]$ is a non-zero prime ideal. We prove that the characteristic $p$ of the field $\Bbb F_q$ does not divide the order of the quotient $\Bbb T(\goth p)/\goth E(\goth p)$ and the Eisenstein ideal $\goth E(\goth p)$ is locally principal.
Let K be a function field and let (f) be a principal prime ideal of the ring A, which is a subring of K. Let phi: A --> K {tau} be a Drinfeld module. In this paper we consider the problem whether a point P in K which is a phi(f)-fold locally at each place v of K, i.e., for each v there is a Q in K_v such that phi(f).P = Q, is also a phi(f)-fold globally. We also discuss the same problem in the context of elliptic curves, where it is much simpler.
In this paper we present several finite families of congruences between cusp forms and Eisenstein series of higher weights at powers of prime ideals. We formulate a conjecture which describes properties of the prime ideals and their relation to the weights. We check the validity of the conjecture on several numerical examples.
We study the Eisenstein ideal of Drinfeld modular curves of small levels, and the relation of the Eisenstein ideal to the cuspidal divisor group and the component groups of Jacobians of Drinfeld modular curves. We prove that the characteristic of the function field is an Eisenstein prime number when the level is an arbitrary non square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ not equal to a square of a prime.
