Let $ψ: A \to F\{τ\}$ be a Drinfeld $A$-module over $F$ of rank 2 and without complex multiplication, where $A = {\mathbb{F}}_q[T]$, $F = {\mathbb{F}}_q(T)$, and $q$ is an odd prime power. For a prime $\mathfrak{p} = p A$ of $A$ of good reduction for $ψ$ and with residue field ${\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}$, we study the growth of the absolute value $|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}|$ of the discriminant of the ${\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}$-endomorphism ring of the reduction of $ψ$ modulo $\mathfrak{p}$. We prove that for all $\mathfrak{p}$, $|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}|$ grows with $|p|$. Moreover, we prove that for a density 1 of primes $\mathfrak{p}$, $|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}|$ is as close as possible to its upper bound $|a_{\mathfrak{p}}^2 - 4 μ_{\mathfrak{p}}p|$, where $X^2+a_{\mathfrak{p}}X+μ_{\mathfrak{p}} p \in A[X]$ is the characteristic polynomial of $τ^{\text{deg} \ p}$.
The question we propose to answer throughout this paper is the following: Given an isogeny class of Drinfeld modules over a finite field, what are the orders of the corresponding endomorphism algebra (which is an isogeny invariant) that occur as endomorphism ring of a Drinfeld module in that isogeny class? It is worth mentioning that this question is different from the ones investigated by the authors Kuhn, Pink in [6] and Garai, Papikian in [3]. The former authors rather provided an answer to the question, given a Drinfeld module ϕ, how does one efficiently compute the endomorphism ring of ϕ?…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ be the polynomial ring over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We study the endomorphism rings of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules of arbitrary rank over finite fields. We compare the endomorphism rings to their subrings generated by the Frobenius endomorphism and deduce from this a refinement of a reciprocity law for division fields of Drinfeld modules proved in our earlier paper. We then use these results to give an efficient algorithm for computing the endomorphism rings and discuss some interesting examples produced by our algorithm.
We give an effective algorithm to determine the endomorphism ring of a Drinfeld module, both over its field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof. Using previous results we deduce an effective description of the image of the adelic Galois representation associated to the Drinfeld module, up to commensurability. We also give an effective algorithm to decide whether two Drinfeld modules are isogenous, again both over their field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof.
We give a global description of the Frobenius elements in the division fields of Drinfeld modules of rank $2$. We apply this description to derive a criterion for the splitting modulo primes of a class of non-solvable polynomials, and to study the frequency with which the reductions of Drinfeld modules have small endomorphism rings. We also generalize some of these results to higher rank Drinfeld modules and prove CM-lifting theorems for Drinfeld modules.
We give a product expansion for the Drinfeld discriminant function in arbitrary rank $r$, which generalizes the formula obtained by Gekeler for the rank 2 Drinfeld discriminant function. This enables one to compute the Fourier expansion of this function much more efficiently. The formula in this article uses an $r-1$-dimensional parameter and as such provides a nice counterpoint to the formula previously obtained by Hamahata, which is written in terms of several 1-dimensional parameters.
In this paper, after reviewing known results on functions over Bruhat-Tits trees and the theory of characteristic $p$ valued modular forms, we present some structure of the tempered distributions on the projective space ${\P1}(\bk_\infty)$ over a complete function field $\bk_\infty$ of characteristic $p$, and calculate the characteristic $p$ valued measure associated to the Drinfeld discriminant and the characteristic $p$ valued measure associated to the Poincaé series.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be a non-CM elliptic curve. Assuming GRH, we prove that, for a set of primes $p$ of density $1$, the absolute discriminant of the $\mathbb{F}_p$-endomorphism ring of the reduction of $E$ modulo $p$ is close to maximal.
We study $\mathscr{D}$-elliptic sheaves in terms of their associated modules, which we call Drinfeld-Stuhler modules. We prove some basic results about Drinfeld-Stuhler modules and their endomorphism rings, and then examine the existence and properties of Drinfeld-Stuhler modules with large endomorphism algebras, which are analogous to CM and supersingular Drinfeld modules. Finally, we examine the fields of moduli of Drinfeld-Stuhler modules.
Let $F_\infty=\mathbb{F}_q(\!(1/T)\!)$ be the completion of $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ at $1/T$. We develop a theory of Fourier expansions for harmonic cochains on the edges of the Bruhat-Tits building of $\mathrm{PGL}_r(F_\infty)$, $r\geq 2$, generalizing an earlier construction of Gekeler for $r=2$. We then apply this theory to study modular units on the Drinfeld symmetric space $Ω^r$ over $F_\infty$, and the cuspidal divisor groups of Satake compactifications of certain Drinfeld modular varieties. In particular, we obtain a higher dimensional analogue of a result of Ogg for classical modular curves …
We calculate the effect of simple Hecke operators on u-expansions of higher rank Drinfeld modular forms, the eigenvalue for the Drinfeld discriminant function $Δ_t$ and show that a certain natural class of Hecke operators is completely multiplicative.
We study isogeny classes of Drinfeld $A$-modules over finite fields $k$ with commutative endomorphism algebra $D$, in order to describe the isomorphism classes in a fixed isogeny class. We study when the minimal order $A[π]$ of $D$ occurs as an endomorphism ring by proving when it is locally maximal at $π$, and show that this happens if and only if the isogeny class is ordinary or $k$ is the prime field. We then describe how the monoid of fractional ideals of the endomorphism ring $\mathcal{E}$ of a Drinfeld module $ϕ$ up to $D$-linear equivalence acts on the isomorphism classes in the isogeny…
Let $A=\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ be the polynomial ring over $\mathbb{F}_q$, and $F$ be the field of fractions of $A$. Let $ϕ$ be a Drinfeld $A$-module of rank $r\geq 2$ over $F$. For all but finitely many primes $\mathfrak{p}\lhd A$, one can reduce $ϕ$ modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ to obtain a Drinfeld $A$-module $ϕ\otimes\mathbb{F}_\mathfrak{p}$ of rank $r$ over $\mathbb{F}_\mathfrak{p}=A/\mathfrak{p}$. The endomorphism ring $\mathcal{E}_\mathfrak{p}=\mathrm{End}_{\mathbb{F}_\mathfrak{p}}(ϕ\otimes\mathbb{F}_\mathfrak{p})$ is an order in an imaginary field extension $K$ of $F$ of degree $r$. Let $\mathcal{O}_…
This is the third part of a series of articles providing a foundation for the theory of Drinfeld modular forms of arbitrary rank. In the present article we construct and study some examples of Drinfeld modular forms. In particular we define Eisenstein series, as well as the action of Hecke operators upon them, coefficient forms and discriminant forms. In the special case A=F_q[t] we show that all modular forms for GL_r(Γ(t)) are generated by certain weight one Eisenstein series, and all modular forms for GL_r(A) and SL_r(A) are generated by certain coefficient forms and discriminant forms. We …
Let $Φ$ be a Drinfeld $\mathbf{F}_{q}[T]$-module of rank 2, over a finite field $L$, a finite extension of $n$ degrees of a finite field with $q$ elements $\mathbf{F}_{q}$. Let $m$ be the extension degrees of $ L$ over the field $\mathbf{F}_{q}[T]/P$, $P$ is the $\mathbf{F}%_{q}[T]$-characteristic of $L$, and $d$ the degree of the polynomial $P$. We will discuss about a many analogies points with elliptic curves. We start by the endomorphism ring of a Drinfeld $\mathbf{F}_{q}[T]$-module of rank 2, End$_{L}Φ$, and we specify the maximality conditions and non maximality conditions as a $\mathbf{…
We compute the first and second moments of the divisor-counting function for the Euler-Poincaré characteristic and the trace of Frobenius for the reductions modulo $p$ of a rank 2 Drinfeld module with nontrivial endomorphism ring, as the prime $p$ varies over the primes of ordinary reduction of the Drinfeld module. From these moments we derive the normal order of the number of prime divisors of these invariants.
Let rho be a Drinfeld A-module with generic characteristic defined over an algebraic function field. We prove that all of the algebraic relations among periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms of algebraic points on rho are those coming from linear relations induced by endomorphisms of rho.
Let $\frak{p}$ be a prime ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. Let $J_0(\frak{p})$ be the Jacobian variety of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{p})$. Let $Φ$ be the component group of $J_0(\frak{p})$ at the place $1/T$. We use graph Laplacians to estimate the order of $Φ$ as $\mathrm{deg}(\frak{p})$ goes to infinity. This estimate implies that $Φ$ is not annihilated by the Eisenstein ideal of the Hecke algebra $\mathbb{T}(\frak{p})$ acting on $J_0(\frak{p})$ once the degree of $\frak{p}$ is large enough. We also obtain an asymptotic formula for the size of the discriminant of $\mathbb{T}(\frak{p})$…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\Q$. It is well known that the ring of endomorphisms of $E_p$, the reduction of $E$ modulo a prime $p$ of ordinary reduction, is an order of the quadratic imaginary field $Q(π_p)$ generated by the Frobenius element $π_p$. When the curve has complex multiplication (CM), this is always a fixed field as the prime varies. However, when the curve has no CM, very little is known, not only about the order, but about the fields that might appear as algebra of endomorphisms varying the prime. The ring of endomorphisms is obviously related with the arithmetic of $a_p^2…
We study the quasi-endomorphism ring of infinitely definable subgroups in separably closed fields. Based on the results we obtain, we are able to prove a Mordell-Lang theorem for Drinfeld modules of finite characteristic. Using specialization arguments we are able to prove also a Mordell-Lang theorem for Drinfeld modules of generic characteristic.
Let $ϕ$ be a non-isotrivial family of Drinfeld A-modules of rank r in generic characteristic with a suitable level structure over a connected smooth algebraic variety X. Suppose that the endomorphism ring of $ϕ$ is equal to A. Then we show that the closure of the analytic fundamental group of X in $SL_r(\mathbb{A}_F^f)$ is open, where $\mathbb{A}_F^f$ denotes the ring of finite adeles of the quotient field F of A. From this we deduce two further results: (1) If X is defined over a finitely generated field extension of F, the image of the arithmetic étale fundamental group of X on the adelic Ta…
We present two algorithms to compute the endomorphism ring of an ordinary elliptic curve E defined over a finite field F_q. Under suitable heuristic assumptions, both have subexponential complexity. We bound the complexity of the first algorithm in terms of log q, while our bound for the second algorithm depends primarily on log |D_E|, where D_E is the discriminant of the order isomorphic to End(E). As a byproduct, our method yields a short certificate that may be used to verify that the endomorphism ring is as claimed.
Let $k$ be a global field, let $A$ be a Dedekind domain with $\text{Quot}(A) = k$, and let $K$ be a finitely generated field. Using a unified approach for both elliptic curves and Drinfeld modules $M$ defined over $K$ and having a trivial endomorphism ring, with $k= \mathbb{Q}$, $A = \mathbb{Z}$ in the former case and $k$ a global function field, $A$ its ring of functions regular away from a fixed prime in the latter case, for any nonzero ideal $\mathfrak{a} \lhd A$ we prove best possible estimates in the norm $|\mathfrak{a}|$ for the degrees over $K$ of the subfields of the $\mathfrak{a}$-div…
Denis associated to each Drinfeld module M over a global function function field L a canonical height function, which plays a role analogous to that of the Neron-Tate height in the context of elliptic curves. We prove that there exist constants ε>0 and C, depending only on the number of places at which M has bad reduction, such that either x in M is a torsion point of bounded order, or else the canonical height of x is bound below by εmax{h(j_M), deg(D_M)}, where j_M is a certain invariant of the isomorphism class of M, and D_M is the minimal discriminant of M. As an application, we make some …
Let E be an elliptic curve with complex multiplication by R, where R is an order of discriminant D<-4 of an imaginary quadratic field K . If a prime number p is decomposed completely in the ring class field associated with R, then E has good reduction at a prime ideal P of K dividing p and there exist positive integers u and v such that 4p=u^2-Dv^2. It is well known that square of the trace a_P of Frobenius endomorphism of the reduction of E modulo P is equal to u^2. We determine whether a_P=u or a_P=-u in the case the class number of R is 2 or 3 and D is divided by 3,4 or 5. This article is a…
In this paper we investigate a local to global principle for Mordell-Weil group defined over a ring of integers ${\cal O}_K$ of $t$-modules that are products of the Drinfeld modules ${\widehatφ}=ϕ_{1}^{e_1}\times \dots \times ϕ_{t}^{e_{t}}.$ Here $K$ is a finite extension of the field of fractions of $A={\mathbb F}_{q}[t].$ We assume that the ${\mathrm{rank}}(ϕ)_{i})=d_{i}$ and endomorphism rings of the involved Drinfeld modules of generic characteristic are the simplest possible, i.e. ${\mathrm{End}}(ϕ_{i})=A$ for $ i=1,\dots , t.$ Our main result is the following numeric criterion. Let ${N}=…
Let d1 and d2 be discriminants of distinct quadratic imaginary orders O_d1 and O_d2 and let J(d1,d2) denote the product of differences of CM j-invariants with discriminants d1 and d2. In 1985, Gross and Zagier gave an elegant formula for the factorization of the integer J(d1,d2) in the case that d1 and d2 are relatively prime and discriminants of maximal orders. To compute this formula, they first reduce the problem to counting the number of simultaneous embeddings of O_d1 and O_d2 into endomorphism rings of supersingular curves, and then solve this counting problem. Interestingly, this counti…
In the arithmetic of function fields Drinfeld modules play the role that elliptic curves take on in the arithmetic of number fields. As higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogues of abelian varieties, G. Anderson introduced pure t-motives. In this article we study the arithmetic of the later. We investigate which pure t-motives are semisimple, that is, isogenous to direct sums of simple ones. We give examples for pure t-motives which are not semisimple. Over finite fields the semisimplicity is equivalent to the semisimplicity of the endomorphism al…
We prove a genus formula for modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves. We use this formula to show that the reductions of modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves attain the Drinfeld-Vladut bound as the degree of the discriminant of $D$ tends to infinity.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve without CM that is defined over a number field $K$. For all but finitely many nonarchimedean places $v$ of $K$ there is the reduction $E(v)$ of $E$ at $v$ that is an elliptic curve over the residue field $k(v)$ at $v$. The set of $v$'s with ordinary $E(v)$ has density 1 (Serre). For such $v$ the endomorphism ring $End(E(v))$ of $E(v)$ is an order in an imaginary quadratic field. We prove that for any pair of relatively prime positive integers $N$ and $M$ there are infinitely many nonarchimedean places $v$ of $K$ such that the discriminant $Δ(v)$ of $End(E(v))$ is d…
Let $X_{1}$ be a projective, smooth and geometrically connected curve over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ with $q=p^{n}$ elements where $p$ is a prime number, and let $X$ be its base change to an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We give a formula for the number of irreducible $\ell$-adic local systems ($\ell\neq p$) with a fixed rank over $X$ fixed by the Frobenius endomorphism. We prove that this number behaves like a Lefschetz fixed point formula for a variety over $\mathbb{F}_q$, which generalises a result of Drinfeld in rank $2$ and proves a conjecture of Deligne. To do this, we pass to the automo…
We use the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin patching method to investigate the multiplicities with which Galois representations occur in the mod $\ell$ cohomology of Shimura curves over totally real number fields. Our method relies on explicit computations of local deformation rings done by Shotton, which we use to compute the Weil class group of various deformation rings. Exploiting the natural self-duality of the cohomology groups, we use these class group computations to precisely determine the structure of a patched module in many new cases in which the patched module is not free (and so multiplicity on…
