Let K be a function field and let (f) be a principal prime ideal of the ring A, which is a subring of K. Let phi: A --> K {tau} be a Drinfeld module. In this paper we consider the problem whether a point P in K which is a phi(f)-fold locally at each place v of K, i.e., for each v there is a Q in K_v such that phi(f).P = Q, is also a phi(f)-fold globally.
We also discuss the same problem in the context of elliptic curves, where it is much simpler.
We study $\mathscr{D}$-elliptic sheaves in terms of their associated modules, which we call Drinfeld-Stuhler modules. We prove some basic results about Drinfeld-Stuhler modules and their endomorphism rings, and then examine the existence and properties of Drinfeld-Stuhler modules with large endomorphism algebras, which are analogous to CM and supersingular Drinfeld modules. Finally, we examine the fields of moduli of Drinfeld-Stuhler modules.
The question we propose to answer throughout this paper is the following: Given an isogeny class of Drinfeld modules over a finite field, what are the orders of the corresponding endomorphism algebra (which is an isogeny invariant) that occur as endomorphism ring of a Drinfeld module in that isogeny class? It is worth mentioning that this question is different from the ones investigated by the authors Kuhn, Pink in [6] and Garai, Papikian in [3]. The former authors rather provided an answer to the question, given a Drinfeld module ϕ, how does one efficiently compute the endomorphism ring of ϕ?…
We prove an analogue of the Sato-Tate conjecture for Drinfeld modules. Using ideas of Drinfeld, J.-K. Yu showed that Drinfeld modules satisfy some Sato-Tate law, but did not describe the actual law. More precisely, for a Drinfeld module ϕdefined over a field L, he constructs a continuous representation ρ_\infty : W_L \to D^* of the Weil group of L into a certain division algebra, which encodes the Sato-Tate law. When the Drinfeld module has generic characteristic and L is finitely generated, we shall describe the image of this representation up to commensurability. As an application, we give i…
We introduce a certain family of Drinfeld modules that we propose as analogues of the Legendre normal form elliptic curves. We exhibit explicit formulas for a certain period of such Drinfeld modules as well as formulas for the supersingular locus in that family, establishing a connection between these two kinds of formulas. Lastly, we also provide a closed formula for the supersingular polynomial in the $\jmath$-invariant for generic Drinfeld modules.
We provide explicit bounds on the difference of heights of isogenous Drinfeld modules. We derive a finiteness result in isogeny classes. In the rank 2 case, we also obtain an explicit upper bound on the size of the coefficients of modular polynomials attached to Drinfeld modules.
We give a global description of the Frobenius elements in the division fields of Drinfeld modules of rank $2$. We apply this description to derive a criterion for the splitting modulo primes of a class of non-solvable polynomials, and to study the frequency with which the reductions of Drinfeld modules have small endomorphism rings. We also generalize some of these results to higher rank Drinfeld modules and prove CM-lifting theorems for Drinfeld modules.
We give an effective algorithm to determine the endomorphism ring of a Drinfeld module, both over its field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof. Using previous results we deduce an effective description of the image of the adelic Galois representation associated to the Drinfeld module, up to commensurability. We also give an effective algorithm to decide whether two Drinfeld modules are isogenous, again both over their field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof.
We derive asymptotically optimal upper bounds on the number of L-rational torsion points on a given elliptic curve or Drinfeld module defined over a finitely generated field K, as a function of the degree [L:K]. Our main tool is the adelic openness of the image of Galois representations attached to elliptic curves and Drinfeld modules, due to Serre and Pink-Ruetsche, respectively. Our approach is to prove a general result for certain Galois modules, which applies simultaneously to elliptic curves and to Drinfeld modules.
Introduced by Anglès, Pellarin, and Tavares Ribeiro, Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras are closely connected to Anderson log-algebraicity identities, Pellarin $L$-series, and Taelman class modules. In the present paper we define the de Rham map for Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras, and we prove that it is an isomorphism under natural hypotheses. As part of this investigation we determine further criteria for the uniformizability and rigid analytic triviality of Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras.
The goal of this article is to define an analogue of the Weil-pairing for Drinfeld modules using explicit formulas and to deduce its main properties from these formulas. Our result generalizes the formula currently known for rank 2 Drinfeld modules and works as a more explicit, elementary proof of the Weil-pairing's existence than the one appearing in the current literature.
In the arithmetic of function fields, Drinfeld modules play the role that elliptic curves play in the arithmetic of number fields. The aim of this paper is to study a non-existence problem of Drinfeld modules with constrains on torsion points at places with large degree. This is motivated by a conjecture of Christopher Rasmussen and Akio Tamagawa on the non-existence of abelian varieties over number fields with some arithmetic constraints. We prove the non-existence of Drinfeld modules satisfying Rasmussen-Tamagawa type conditions in the case where the inseparable degree of base fields is not …
In this paper, we study the surjectivity of adelic Galois representation associated to Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ of rank $2$ in the cases when $q$ is even or $q=3$.
We introduce the formalism of Coleman's power series for rank 1 Drinfeld modules and apply it to formulate and prove the analogue of Wiles' explicit reciprocity law in this setting.
For each positive integer $r$, we construct a nowhere-vanishing, single-cuspidal Drinfeld modular form for $\GL_r(\FF_q[θ])$, necessarily of least possible weight, via determinants using rigid analytic trivializations of the universal Drinfeld module of rank $r$ and deformations of vectorial Eisenstein series. Along the way, we deduce that the cycle class map from de Rham cohomology to Betti cohomology is an isomorphism for Drinfeld modules of all ranks over $\FF_q[θ]$.
For any Drinfeld module of special characteristic p0 over a finitely generated field, we study the associated adelic Galois representation at all places different from p0 and \infty, and determine the image of the geometric Galois group up to commensurability.
In this paper, we prove explicit reciprocity laws for a class of formal Drinfeld modules having stable reduction of height one, in the spirit of those existing in characteristic zero (cf. the work of Wiles). We begin by defining the Kummer pairing in the language of formal Drinfeld modules defined over local fields of positive characteristic. We then prove explicit formulas for this pairing in terms of the logarithm of the formal Drinfeld module, a certain Coleman power series, torsion points and the trace. Our results extend the explicit formulas already proved by Anglès for Carlitz modules, …
We study rational points and torsion points on Drinfeld modular curves defined over rational function fields. As a consequence we derive a conjecture of Schweizer describing completely the torsion of Drinfeld modules of rank two over $\Bbb F_2(T)$ implying Poonen's uniform boundedness conjecture in this particular case.
In this paper we generalize the results of \cite{sanchez} to rank one Drinfeld modules with class number one. We show that, in the present form, there does not exist a cogalois theory for Drinfeld modules of rank or class number larger than one. We also consider the torsion of the Carlitz module for the extension ${\mathbb{F}}_{q}(T)(Λ_{P^{n}}) /{\mathbb{F}}_{q}(T)(Λ_{P})$.
In the present paper, we analyze Taelman L-values corresponding to Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras of arbitrary rank. Using our results, we also introduce an L-series converging in Tate algebras which can be seen as a generalization of Pellarin L-series.
We provide explicit series expansions for the exponential and logarithm functions attached to a rank r Drinfeld module that generalize well known formulas for the Carlitz exponential and logarithm. Using these results we obtain a procedure and an analytic expression for computing the periods of rank 2 Drinfeld modules and also a criterion for supersingularity.
We develop a theory of canonical isogeny characters of Drinfeld-Stuhler modules similar to the theory of canonical isogeny characters of abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication. We then apply this theory to give explicit criteria for the non-existence of rational points on Drinfeld-Stuhler modular varieties over the finite extensions of $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$. This allows us to produce explicit examples of Drinfeld-Stuhler curves violating the Hasse principle.
In this paper, we formulate the Drinfeld module analogue of a question raised by Lang and studied by Katz on the existence of rational points on abelian varieties over number fields. Given a maximal ideal $\fl$ of $\F_q[T]$, the question essentially asks whether, up to isogeny, a Drinfeld module $ϕ$ over $\F_q(T)$ contains a rational $\fl$-torsion point if the reduction of $ϕ$ at almost all primes of $\F_q[T]$ contains a rational $\fl$-torsion point. Similar to the case of abelian varieties, we show that the answer is positive if the rank of the Drinfeld module is $2$, but negative if the rank…
We compute the first and second moments of the divisor-counting function for the Euler-Poincaré characteristic and the trace of Frobenius for the reductions modulo $p$ of a rank 2 Drinfeld module with nontrivial endomorphism ring, as the prime $p$ varies over the primes of ordinary reduction of the Drinfeld module. From these moments we derive the normal order of the number of prime divisors of these invariants.
In this paper a Kummer theory of division points over rank one Drinfeld A=Fq[T]-modules defined over global function fields was given. The results are in complete analogy with the classical Kummer theory of division points over the multiplicative algebraic group Gm defined over number fields.
When travelling from the number fields theory to the function fields theory, one cannot miss the deep analogy between rank 1 Drinfeld modules and the group of root of unity and the analogy between rank 2 Drinfeld modules and elliptic curves. But so far, there is no known structure in number fields theory that is analogous to the Drinfeld modules of higher rank r > 2. In this paper we investigate the classes of those Drinfeld modules of higher rank r > 2. We describe explicitly the Weil polynomials defining the isogeny classes of rank r Drinfeld modules for any rank r > 2. our explicit descript…
We formulate and prove a log-algebraicity theorem for arbitrary rank Drinfeld modules defined over the polynomial ring F_q[theta]. This generalizes results of Anderson for the rank one case. As an application we show that certain special values of Goss L-functions are linear forms in Drinfeld logarithms and are transcendental.
We study tensor powers of rank 1 sign-normalized Drinfeld A-modules, where A is the coordinate ring of an elliptic curve over a finite field. Using the theory of A-motives, we find explicit formulas for the A-action of these modules. Then, by developing the theory of vector-valued Anderson generating functions, we give formulas for the period lattice of the associated exponential function.
We show that the module of integral points on a Drinfeld module satisfies a an analogue of Dirichlet's unit theorem, despite its failure to be finitely generated. As a consequence, we obtain a construction of a canonical finitely generated sub-module of the module of integral points. We use the results to give a precise formulation of a conjectural analogue of the class number formula.
For an extension $K/\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ of the rational function field over a finite field, we introduce the notion of virtually $K$-rational Drinfeld modules as a function field analogue of $\mathbb{Q}$-curves. Our goal in this article is to prove that all virtually $K$-rational Drinfeld modules of rank two with no complex multiplication are parametrized up to isogeny by $K$-rational points of a quotient curve of the Drinfeld modular curve $Y_0(\mathfrak{n})$ with some square-free level $\mathfrak{n}$. This is an analogue of Elkies' well-known result on $\mathbb{Q}$-curves.
We propose a lower bound estimate in Dobrowolski's style of the canonical height on a certain family of Drinfeld modules of characteristic 0, including under some hypothesis on their degree and their base field, the complex multiplication case, extending so a previous result of L. Denis on Carlitz modules. Our study is focused on the highest possible level of precision on the parameters involved with rapport to the main values which characterize the Drinfeld module (height, base field degree and rank) and it provides an estimate in function of both separable and inseparable degree of the algeb…
We state and prove a formula for a certain value of the Goss L-function of a Drinfeld module. This gives characteristic-p-valued function field analogues of the class number formula and of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. The formula and its proof are presented in an entirely self-contained fashion.
Anderson generating functions are generating series for division values of points on Drinfeld modules, and they serve as important tools for capturing periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms. They have been fundamental in recent work on special values of positive characteristic L-series and in transcendence and algebraic independence problems. In the present paper we investigate techniques for expressing Anderson generating functions in terms of the defining polynomial of the Drinfeld module and determine new formulas for periods and quasi-periods.
We prove that in the backward orbit of a non-preperiodic point under the action of a Drinfeld module of generic characteristic there exist at most finitely many points S-integral with respect to another nonpreperiodic point. This provides the answer (in positive characteristic) to a question raised by Sookdeo. We also prove that for each nontorsion point z, there exist at most finitely many torsion points which are S-integral with respect to z. This proves a question raised by Tucker and the author, and it gives the analogue of Ih's conjecture for Drinfeld modules.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ be the polynomial ring over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We study the endomorphism rings of Drinfeld $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules of arbitrary rank over finite fields. We compare the endomorphism rings to their subrings generated by the Frobenius endomorphism and deduce from this a refinement of a reciprocity law for division fields of Drinfeld modules proved in our earlier paper. We then use these results to give an efficient algorithm for computing the endomorphism rings and discuss some interesting examples produced by our algorithm.
Inspired by the classical setting, Goss defined $L$-series attached to Drinfeld modules. In this paper, for a fixed choice of a power $q$ of a prime number and a given Drinfeld module $ϕ$ of rank 2 with a certain condition on its coefficients, we give explicit formulas for the values of Goss $L$-series attached to $ϕ$ at positive integers $n$ such that $2n+1\leq q$ in terms of polylogarithms and coefficients of the logarithm series of $ϕ$.
Let $p$ be a rational prime and $q$ a power of $p$. Let $\wp$ be a monic irreducible polynomial of degree $d$ in $\mathbf{F}_q[t]$. In this paper, we define an analogue of the Hodge-Tate map which is suitable for the study of Drinfeld modules over $\mathbf{F}_q[t]$ and, using it, develop a geometric theory of $\wp$-adic Drinfeld modular forms similar to Katz's theory in the case of elliptic modular forms. In particular, we show that for Drinfeld modular forms with congruent Fourier coefficients at $\infty$ modulo $\wp^n$, their weights are also congruent modulo $(q^d-1)p^{\lceil \log_p(n)\rcei…
The modular invariant of rank 1 Drinfeld modules is introduced and used to formulate and prove an exact analog of the Weber-Fueter theorem for global function fields. The main ingredient in the proof is a version of Shimura's Main Theorem of Complex Multiplication for global function fields, which is also proved here.
Generalizing the results of Maurischat in \cite{Maurischatxx}, we show that the field $K_{\infty}(Λ)$ of periods of a Drinfeld module $ϕ$ of rank $r$ defined over $K_{\infty} = \mathds{F}_{q}((T^{-1}))$ may be arbitrarily large over $K_{\infty}$. We also show that, in contrast, the residue class degree $f( K_{\infty}(Λ) | K_{\infty})$ remains bounded by a constant that depends only on $r$.
Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $a \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ and $u \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$. Provided $q \geq 17$, we compute the average number of primes $p$ for which the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius at $p$ is $X^2 - aX + up$ over a family of rank 2 Drinfeld $ \mathbb{F}_q[T]$-modules. Our results give asymptotic formulas in the $x$-limit.
Let rho be a Drinfeld A-module with generic characteristic defined over an algebraic function field. We prove that all of the algebraic relations among periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms of algebraic points on rho are those coming from linear relations induced by endomorphisms of rho.
We study tensor powers of rank 1 sign-normalized Drinfeld A-modules, where A is the coordinate ring of an elliptic curve over a finite field. Using the theory of vector valued Anderson generating functions, we give formulas for the coefficients of the logarithm and exponential functions associated to these A-modules. We then show that there exists a vector whose bottom coordinate contains a Goss zeta value, whose evaluation under the exponential function is defined over the Hilbert class field. This allows us to prove the transcendence of Goss zeta values and periods of Drinfeld modules as wel…
In this short note we provide a few examples of non-isomorphic arithmetically equivalent global function fields. These examples are obtained via well-known technique of adjoining the torsion points of various Drinfeld Modules to realise the $Gl_n(\mathbb F_q)$ as a Galois group of extensions of global function fields. Furthermore we afford the code of the Magma scripts to verify the results and construct more examples in similar fashion.
We make a detailed account of sign-normalized rank 1 Drinfeld A-modules, for A the coordinate ring of an elliptic curve over a finite field, in order to provide a parallel theory to the Carlitz module for F_q[t]. Using precise formulas for the shtuka function for A, we obtain a product formula for the fundamental period of the Drinfeld module. Using the shtuka function we find identities for deformations of reciprocal sums and as a result prove special value formulas for Pellarin L-series in terms of an Anderson-Thakur function. We also give a new proof of a log-algebraicity theorem of Anderso…
In this paper, let $ϕ$ be the Drinfeld module over $\mathbb{F}_{q}(T)$ of prime rank $r$ defined by $$ϕ_T=T+τ^{r-1}+T^{q-1}τ^r.$$ We prove that under certain condition on $\mathbb{F}_q$, the adelic Galois representation $$ρ_ϕ:{\rm{Gal}}(\mathbb{F}_q(T)^{\rm{sep}}/\mathbb{F}_q(T))\longrightarrow \varprojlim_{\mathfrak{a}}{\rm{Aut}}(ϕ[\mathfrak{a}])\cong {\rm{GL_r}}(\widehat{A})$$ is surjective.
