In 2008, Soundararajan showed that there exists a normalized Hecke eigenform $f$ of weight $k$ and level one such that $$ L(1/2, f ) ~\geq~ \exp\Bigg( (1 + o(1)) \sqrt{\frac{2\log k}{\log\log k} }\Bigg) $$ for sufficiently large $k \equiv 0 \pmod{4}$. In this note, we show that for any $ε>0$ and for all sufficiently large $k \equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, the number of normalized Hecke eigenforms of weight $k$ and level one for which $$ L(1/2, f ) ~\geq~ \exp\left(1.41\sqrt{ \frac{ \log k }{\log\log k} }\right) $$ is $\gg_ε k^{1-ε}$. For an odd fundamental discriminant $D$, let $B_{k}(|D|)$ be the set of all cuspidal normalized Hecke eigenforms of weight $k$ and level dividing $|D|$. When the real primitive Dirichlet character $χ_D$ satisfies $χ_D(-1)= i^k$, we investigate the number of $f \in B_{k}(|D|)$ for which $L(1/2, f \otimes χ_D)$ takes extremal values.
In this paper, we will study various connections between double zeta values relative to $μ_N$, Hecke operators $T_N$, and newforms of level $Γ_0(N)$ for $N=2,3$. Those various connections generalize the well-known of Baumard and Schneps. We also give a conjecture about the Eichler-Shimura-Manin correspondence between $\mathcal{S}_k^{\textrm{new}}(Γ_0(2))^{\pm}$, $\mathcal{S}_k^{\textrm{new}}(Γ_0(3))^{\pm}$ and some period polynomial spaces.
We study the image of a generalized Dedekind sum relating to the weight zero Eisenstein series $E_{χ_1,χ_2}$. We show that the image is a lattice of full rank inside a number field determined by the characters $χ_1$ and $χ_2$. We also give a generalization of Knopp's identity for the classical Dedekind sum.
We prove a new upper bound for the $L^4$-norm of a holomorphic Hecke newform of large fixed weight and prime level $q\to \infty$. This is achieved by proving a sharp mean value estimate for a related $L$-function on GL(6)
Using Hecke characters, we construct two infinite families of newforms with complex multiplication, one by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ and the other by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-2})$. The values of the $p$-th Fourier coefficients of all the forms in each family can be described by a single formula, which we provide explicitly. This allows us to establish a formula relating the $p$-th Fourier coefficients of forms of different weights, within each family. We then prove congruence relations between the $p$-th Fourier coefficients of these newforms at all odd weights and values coming from two of Zagier's s…
We give a lower bound for the sup-norm of an $L^2$-normalized newform in an irreducible, unitary, cuspidal representation $π$ of $GL_2$ over a number field. When the central character of $π$ is sufficiently ramified, this bound improves upon the trivial bound by a positive power of $N$ where $N$ is the norm of the conductor of $π$. This generalizes a result of Templier, who dealt with the special case when the conductor of the central character equals the conductor of the representation. We also make a conjecture about the true size of the sup-norm in the $N$-aspect that takes into account thi…
We prove that for $d \in \{ 2,3,5,7,13 \}$ and $K$ a quadratic (or rational) field of discriminant $D$ and Dirichlet character $χ$, if a prime $p$ is large enough compared to $D$, there is a newform $f \in S_2(Γ_0(dp^2))$ with sign $(+1)$ with respect to the Atkin-Lehner involution $w_{p^2}$ such that $L(f \otimes χ,1) \neq 0$. This result is obtained through an estimate of a weighted sum of twists of $L$-functions which generalises a result of Ellenberg. It relies on the approximate functional equation for the $L$-functions $L(f \otimes χ, \cdot)$ and a Petersson trace formula restricted to A…
We study which integers are admissible as Fourier coefficients of even integer weight newforms. In the specific case of the tau-function, we show that for all odd primes $\ell < 100$ and all integers $m \geq 1$, we have $$ τ(n) \neq \pm \ell, \pm 5^m. $$ For general newforms $f$ with even integer weight $2k$ and integer coefficients, we prove for most integers $j$ dividing $2k-1$ and all ordinary primes $p$ that $a_f(p^2)$ is never a $j$-th power. We prove a similar result for $a_f(p^4)$, conditional on the Frey-Mazur Conjecture. Our primary method involves relating questions about values of n…
The sup-norm problem in analytic number theory asks for the largest value taken by a given automorphic form. We observe that the function-field version of this problem can be reduced to the geometric problem of finding the largest dimension of the $i$th stalk cohomology group of a given Hecke eigensheaf at any point. This problem, in turn, can be reduced to the intersection-theoretic problem of bounding the "polar multiplicities" of the characteristic cycle of the Hecke eigensheaf, which in known cases is the nilpotent cone of the moduli space of Higgs bundles. We solve this problem for newfor…
Let $f(z)=q+\sum_{n\geq 2}a(n)q^n$ be a weight $k$ normalized newform with integer coefficients and trivial residual mod 2 Galois representation. We extend the results of Amir and Hong in \cite{AH} for $k=2$ by ruling out or locating all odd prime values $|\ell|<100$ of their Fourier coefficients $a(n)$ when $n$ satisfies some congruences. We also study the case of odd weights $k\geq 1$ newforms where the nebentypus is given by a real quadratic Dirichlet character.
With the method of the relative trace formula and the classification of simple supercuspidal representations, we establish some Fourier trace formulas for automorphic forms on $PGL(2)$ of cubic level. As applications, we obtain a non-vanishing result for central $L$-values of holomorphic newforms and a weighted Weyl's law for Maass newforms.
We study the Mahler measures of certain families of Laurent polynomials in two and three variables. Each of the known Mahler measure formulas for these families involves $L$-values of at most one newform and/or at most one quadratic character. In this paper, we show, either rigorously or numerically, that the Mahler measures of some polynomials are related to $L$-values of multiple newforms and quadratic characters simultaneously. The results suggest that the number of modular $L$-values appearing in the formulas significantly depends on the shape of the algebraic value of the parameter chosen…
The period polynomial $r_f(z)$ for a weight $k \geq 3$ newform $f \in S_k(Γ_0(N),χ)$ is the generating function for special values of $L(s,f)$. The functional equation for $L(s, f)$ induces a functional equation on $r_f(z)$. Jin, Ma, Ono, and Soundararajan proved that for all newforms $f$ of even weight $k \ge 4$ and trivial nebetypus, the "Riemann Hypothesis" holds for $r_f(z)$: that is, all roots of $r_f(z)$ lie on the circle of symmetry $|z| =1/\sqrt{N}$. We generalize their methods to prove that this phenomenon holds for all but possibly finitely many newforms $f$ of weight $k \ge 3$ with …
We present a conjecture on the average number of Galois orbits of newforms when fixing the weight and varying the level. This conjecture implies, for instance, that the central L-values (resp. L-derivatives) are nonzero for 100% of even weight prime level newforms with root number +1 (resp. -1).
Let F be a genus two Siegel newform and g a classical newform, both of squarefree levels and of equal weight l. We prove a pullback formula for certain Eisenstein series -- thus generalizing a construction of Shimura -- and use this to derive an explicit integral representation for the degree eight L-function L(s, F X g). This integral representation involves the pullback of a simple Siegel-type Eisenstein series on the unitary group GU(3,3). As an application, we prove a reciprocity law -- predicted by Deligne's conjecture -- for the critical special values L(m, F X g) where m is an integer, …
We prove an algebraicity result for certain critical value of adjoint $L$-functions for ${\rm GSp}_4$ over a totally real number field in terms of the Petersson norm of normalized generic cuspidal newforms on ${\rm GSp}_4$. This is a generalization of our previous result arXiv:1902.06429.
Let F(z) be a newform of weight 2k and level one with a trivial character, and assume that F(z) is a non-zero eigenform of all Hecke operators. In this paper, we study nonvanishing for central values of twisted modular L-function of F.
We compute the space $S_2(K(N))$ of weight $2$ Siegel paramodular cusp forms of squarefree level $N<300$. In conformance with the paramodular conjecture of A. Brumer and K. Kramer, the space is only the additive (Gritsenko) lift space of the Jacobi cusp form space $J_{2,N}^{\text{cusp}}$ except for $N=249,295$, when it further contains one nonlift newform. For these two values of $N$, the Hasse-Weil $p$-Euler factors of a relevant abelian surface match the spin $p$-Euler factors of the nonlift newform for the first two primes $p\nmid N$.
We obtain exact formulas for central values of triple product L-functions averaged over newforms of weight 2 and prime level. We apply these formulas to non-vanishing problems. This paper uses a period formula for the triple product L-function proved by Gross and Kudla.
Inspired by Lehmer's conjecture on the nonvanishing of the Ramanujan $τ$-function, one may ask whether an odd integer $α$ can be equal to $τ(n)$ or any coefficient of a newform $f(z)$. Balakrishnan, Craig, Ono, and Tsai used the theory of Lucas sequences and Diophantine analysis to characterize non-admissible values of newforms of even weight $k\geq 4$. We use these methods for weight $2$ and $3$ newforms and apply our results to $L$-functions of modular elliptic curves and certain $K3$ surfaces with Picard number $\ge 19$. In particular, for the complete list of weight $3$ newforms $f_λ(z)=\s…
We introduce a new trace formula of Kuznetsov type involving the central standard L-values and the Whittaker periods of cuspidal automorphic representations of PGL_n(Q) which are spherical at the archimedean place. As an application, we show a simultaneous non-vanishing of standard L-values at n-1 points on the critical strip for infinitely many Hecke-Maass cuspidal newforms.
In the paper we prove an explicit formula for the central values of certain Rankin L-functions. These L-functions are L-functions of Hilbert newforms over a totally real field F, twisted by unitary Hecke characters of a totally imaginary quadratic extension of F. The formula generalizes our former result on L-functions twisted by finite characters. It also eliminates the restriction on ramifications of Popa's paper.
We consider the value distribution of logarithms of symmetric square L-functions associated with newforms of even weight and prime power level at real s> 1/2. We prove that certain averages of those values can be written as integrals involving a density function which is related with the Sato-Tate measure. Moreover, we discuss the case of symmetric power L-functions.
In the spirit of Lehmer's speculation that Ramanujan's tau-function never vanishes, it is natural to ask whether any given integer $α$ is a value of $τ(n)$. For odd $α$, Murty, Murty, and Shorey proved that $τ(n)\neq α$ for sufficiently large $n$. Several recent papers have identified explicit examples of odd $α$ which are not tau-values. Here we apply these results (most notably the recent work of Bennett, Gherga, Patel, and Siksek) to offer the first examples of even integers that are not tau-values. Namely, for primes $\ell$ we find that $$ τ(n)\not \in \{ \pm 2\ell \ : \ 3\leq \ell< 100\} …
Let f be a newform of weight two and composite level N. We show how to compute weight 3/2 modular forms "associated" to f whose Fourier coefficients are related to the central values of quadratic twists (real and imaginary) of f. We will focus on examples for levels N=27, N=15, and N=75, which exhibit most aspects of our methods.
Let $k$ be an odd integer $\ge 3$ and $N$ a positive integer such that $4 \mid N$. Let $χ$ be an even Dirichlet character modulo $N$. Shimura decomposes the space of half-integral weight cusp forms $S_{k/2}(N,χ)$ as a direct sum of $S_0(N,χ)$ (the subspace spanned by 1-variable theta- series) and $S_{k/2}(N,χ,ϕ)$ where $ϕ$ runs through a certain family of integral weight newforms. The explicit computation of this decomposition is important for practical applications of a theorem of Waldspurger relating critical values of $L$-functions of quadratic twists of newforms of even weight to coefficie…
We prove an asymptotic formula expressing the regularized fourth moment of all newform Eisenstein series of primitive nebentypus as a mean value of $L$-functions. This is an analogue of the recent work of Djanković and Khan in the spectral aspect.
We provide an explicit integral representation for L-functions of pairs (F,g) where F is a holomorphic genus 2 Siegel newform and g a holomorphic elliptic newform, both of squarefree levels and of equal weights. When F,g have level one, this was earlier known by the work of Furusawa. The extension is not straightforward. Our methods involve precise double-coset and volume computations as well as an explicit formula for the Bessel model for GSp(4) in the Steinberg case; the latter is possibly of independent interest. We apply our integral representation to prove an algebraicity result for a cri…
We establish explicit Ichino's formulae for the central values of the triple product $L$-functions with emphasis on the calculations for the real place. The key ingredient for our computations is Proposition 6.8 which generalizes a result of Michel-Venkatesh. As an application we prove the optimal upper bound of a sum of restricted $L^2$-norms of the $L^2$-normalized newforms on certain quadratic extensions with prime level and bounded spectral parameter following the methods of Blomer.
Let $\mathitΠ$ be a cohomological irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of ${\rm GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb F})$ with central character $ω_{\mathitΠ}$ over a totally real number field ${\mathbb F}$. In this paper, we prove the algebraicity of the near central non-critical value of the symmetric fourth $L$-function of $\mathitΠ$ twisted by $ω_{\mathitΠ}^{-2}$. The algebraicity is expressed in terms of the Petersson norm of the normalized newform of $\mathitΠ$ and the top degree Whittaker period of the Gelbart-Jacquet lift ${\rm Sym}^2\mathitΠ$ of $\mathitΠ$.
Iwaniec and Sarnak showed that at the minimum 25% of L-values associated to holomorphic newforms of fixed even integral weight and level $N \rightarrow \infty$ do not vanish at the critical point when N is square-free and $ϕ(N)\sim N$. In this paper we extend the given result to the case of prime power level $N=p^ν$, $ν\geq 2$.
Fix $g$ a Hecke-Maass form for $SL_3(\mathbb{Z})$. Let $q$ be any large prime number. In the family of holomorphic newforms $f$ of level $q$ and fixed weight, we find the average value of the product $L(\half,g\times f)L(\half,f)$. From this we derive a result on the simultaneous non-vanishing of these $L$-functions at the central point.
Let f be a newform of weight two, prime level p. If D is a fundamental discriminant, define the twisted L-function L(f,D,s) to be the L-function associated to the twist of f by the quadratic character of conductor D. In this paper we consider the question of computing the family of twisted central values {L(f,D,1) : |D| <= x} for some x, by using an explicit version of Waldspurger's formula relating the central values L(f,D,1) to the |D|-th Fourier coefficient of weigth 3/2 modular forms in Shimura correspondence with f.
We consider the value distribution of logarithms of symmetric power L-functions associated with newforms of even weight and prime power level. In the symmetric square case, under certain plausible analytical conditions, we prove that certain averages of those values in the level aspect, involving continuous bounded or Riemann integrable test functions, can be written as integrals involving a density function (the "M-function") which is related with the Sato-Tate measure. Moreover, even in the case of general symmetric power L-functions, we show the same type of formula when for some special ty…
We construct harmonic weak Maass forms that map to cusp forms of weight $k\geq 2$ with rational coefficients under the $ξ$-operator. This generalizes work of the first author, Griffin, Ono, and Rolen, who constructed distinguished preimages under this differential operator of weight $2$ newforms associated to rational elliptic curves using the classical Weierstrass theory of elliptic functions. We extend this theory and construct a vector-valued Jacobi--Weierstrass $ζ$-function which is a generalization of the classical Weierstrass $ζ$-function.
Given two newforms $f$ and $g$ of respective weights $k$ and $l$ with $k<l$, Hida constructed a $p$-adic $L$-function interpolating the values of the Rankin convolution of $f$ and $g$ in the critical strip $l \leq s \leq k$. However, this construction works only if $f$ is an ordinary form. Using a method developed by Panchishkin to construct $p$-adic $L$-function associated with modular forms, we generalize this construction to the case where the slope of $f$ is small.
We show that if the zeros of an automorphic $L$-function are weighted by the central value of the $L$-function or a quadratic imaginary base change, then for certain families of holomorphic GL(2) newforms, it has the effect of changing the distribution type of low-lying zeros from orthogonal to symplectic, for test functions whose Fourier transforms have sufficiently restricted support. However, if the $L$-value is twisted by a nontrivial quadratic character, the distribution type remains orthogonal. The proofs involve two vertical equidistribution results for Hecke eigenvalues weighted by cen…
In this article we study the equations $x^4+dy^2=z^p$ and $x^2+dy^6=z^p$ for positive square-free values of $d$. A Frey curve over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ is attached to each primitive solution, which happens to be a $\mathbb{Q}$-curve. Our main result is the construction of a Hecke character $χ$ satisfying that the Frey elliptic curve representation twisted by $χ$ extends to $\text{Gal}_\mathbb{Q}$, therefore (by Serre's conjectures) corresponds to a newform in $S_2(n,\varepsilon)$ for explicit values of $n$ and $\varepsilon$. Following some well known results and elimination techniques (toge…
We give a new construction of a $p$-adic $L$-function $\mathcal{L}(f,Ξ)$, for $f$ a holomorphic newform and $Ξ$ an anticyclotomic family of Hecke characters of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$. The construction uses Ichino's triple product formula to express the central values of $L(f,ξ,s)$ in terms of Petersson inner products, and then uses results of Hida to interpolate them. The resulting construction is well-suited for studying what happens when $f$ is replaced by a modular form congruent to it modulo $p$, and has future applications in the case where $f$ is residually reducible.
Given a Hilbert cuspidal newform $g$ we construct a family of modular forms of half-integral weight whose Fourier coefficients give the central values of the twisted $L$-series of $g$ by fundamental discriminants. The family is parametrized by quadratic conditions on the primes dividing the level of $g$, where each form has coefficients supported on the discriminants satisfying the conditions. These modular forms are given as generalized theta series and thus their coefficients can be effectively computed. Our construction works over arbitrary totally real number fields, except that in the cas…
A quadratic twist of the L-function associated with a modular form is known to satisfy a functional equation, which may be even or odd. A result due to Gross and Zagier explicitly computes the central value of the L-function or its derivative. In prime level when the functional equation is even, Michel and Ramakrishnan have used an averaging method to prove several consequences of the Gross-Zagier formulae, including a non-vanishing result. The present research concerns L-functions arising from newforms in prime-squared level, which necessarily have odd functional equations. Such an L-function…
We build a one-variable $p$-adic $L$-function attached to two Hida families of ordinary $p$-stabilised newforms $\mathbf{f}$, $\mathbf{g}$, interpolating the algebraic part of the central values of the complex $L$-series $L(f \otimes \textrm{Ad}(g), s)$ when $f$ and $g$ range over the classical specialisations of $\mathbf{f}$, $\mathbf{g}$ on a suitable line of the weight space. The construction rests on two major results: an explicit formula for the relevant complex central $L$-values, and the existence of non-trivial $Λ$-adic Shintani liftings and Saito--Kurokawa liftings studied in a previo…
We prove an explicit integral representation -- involving the pullback of a suitable Siegel Eisenstein series -- for the twisted standard $L$-function associated to a holomorphic vector-valued Siegel cusp form of degree $n$ and arbitrary level. In contrast to all previously proved pullback formulas in this situation, our formula involves only scalar-valued functions despite being applicable to $L$-functions of vector-valued Siegel cusp forms. The key new ingredient in our method is a novel choice of local vectors at the archimedean place which allows us to exactly compute the archimedean local…
Let $ϕ= \sum_{r^{2} \leq 4mn}c(n,r)q^{n}ζ^{r}$ be a Jacobi form of weight $k$ (with $k > 2$ if $ϕ$ is not a cusp form) and index $m$ with integral algebraic coefficients which is an eigenfunction of all Hecke operators $T_{p}, (p,m) = 1,$ and which has at least one nonvanishing coefficient $c(n,r)$ with $r$ prime to $m$. We prove that for almost all primes $\ell$ there are infinitely many fundamental discriminants $D = r^{2}-4mn < 0$ prime to $m$ with $ν_{\ell}(c(n,r)) = 0$, where $ν_{\ell}$ denotes a continuation of the $\ell$-adic valuation on $\mathbb{Q}$ to an algebraic closure. As applica…
The period polynomial $r_f(z)$ for an even weight $k\geq 4$ newform $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N))$ is the generating function for the critical values of $L(f,s)$. It has a functional equation relating $r_f(z)$ to $r_f\left(-\frac{1}{Nz}\right)$. We prove the Riemann Hypothesis for these polynomials: that the zeros of $r_f(z)$ lie on the circle $|z|=\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}$ . We prove that these zeros are equidistributed when either $k$ or $N$ is large.
