We develop a theory of differential equations associated to families of algebraic cycles in higher Chow groups (i.e., motivic cohomology groups). This formalism is related to inhomogeneous Picard--Fuchs type differential equations. For families of K3 surfaces the corresponding non-linear ODE turns out to be symilar to Chazy's equation.
We compute relations of rational equivalence among special codimensional two cycles on families of abelian surfaces using elements of higher chow groups.
In this short note, we simply collect some known results about representing algebraic cycles by various kind of "nice" (e.g. smooth, local complete intersection, products of local complete intersection) algebraic cycles, up to rational equivalence. We also add a few elementary and easy observations on these representation problems that we were not able to locate in the literature.
We define higher categorical invariants (gerbes) of codimension two algebraic cycles and provide a categorical interpretation of the intersection of divisors on a smooth proper algebraic variety. This generalization of the classical relation between divisors and line bundles furnishes a new perspective on the Bloch-Quillen formula.
In this paper we show how we can transform quadratic systems into new quadratic systems after some kind of birational transformations, the quadratic plane Cremona maps. We afterwards apply these transformations to the families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle. As a consequence, we provide a new family of quadratic systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree 5. Moreover we show how the known families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree greater than four are obtained using these transformations. We also provide the ph…
In this short note we try to generalize the Clemens-Griffiths criterion of non-rationality for smooth cubic threefolds to the case of smooth cubic fourfolds.

We study families of rational curves on certain irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties. In particular, we prove that any ample linear system on a projective holomorphic symplectic variety of K3[n]-type contains a uniruled divisor. As an application we provide a generalization of the Beauville-Voisin result on the Chow group of 0-cycles on such varieties.
We study families of faces for convex semi-algebraic sets via the normal cycle which is a semi-algebraic set similar to the conormal variety in projective duality theory. We propose a convex algebraic notion of a "patch" -- a term recently coined by Ciripoi, Kaihnsa, Löhne, and Sturmfels as a tool for approximating the convex hull of a semi-algebraic set. We discuss geometric consequences, both for the semi-algebraic and convex geometry of the families of faces, as well as variations of our definition and their consequences.
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We determine the relevant cotangent sheaves and complexes. We determine the structure of certain projective bundles called node scrolls, which play an important role in the geometry of Hilbert schemes.
We study families of algebraic varieties parametrized by topological spaces and generalize some classical results such as Hilbert Nullstellensatz and primary decomposition of commutative rings. We show that there is an equivalence between the category of bivariant coherent sheaves and the category of sheaves of finitely generated modules.
Using abelian differentials and periods of the universal Mumford curve, we study the universal expression and asymptotic behavior of tau functions defined for stably degenerating families of algebraic curves with additional data. Furthermore, we apply this study to constructing solutions to the KP hierarchy which are expressed by nonarchimedean theta functions and by mixtures of quasi-periodic solutions with solitons containing real solutions defined on families of M-curves.
For an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic 0, we give a cycle-theoretic description of the additive 4-term motivic exact sequence associated to the additive dilogarithm of J.-L. Cathelineau, that is the derivative of the Bloch-Wigner function, via the cubical additive higher Chow groups under one assumption. The 4-term functional equation of Cathelineau, an additive analogue of Abel's 5-term functional equation, is also discussed cycle-theoretically.
We construct an infinitesimal invariant for cycles in a family with cohomology class in the total space lying in a given level of the Leray filtration. This infinitesimal invariant detects cycles modulo algebraic equivalence in the fibers. We apply this construction to the Ikeda family, which gives optimal results for the Beauville decomposition of the 1-cycle of a very general plane curve in its Jacobian.
For families of smooth complex projective varieties we show that normal functions arising from algebraically trivial cycle classes are algebraic, and defined over the field of definition of the family. In particular, the zero loci of those functions are algebraic and defined over such a field of definition. This proves a conjecture of Charles.
Let $G$ be a complex, linear algebraic group acting on an algebraic space $X$. The purpose of this paper is to prove a Riemann-Roch theorem (Theorem 5.3) which gives a description of the completion of the equivariant Grothendieck group $G_0(G,X)$ at any maximal ideal of the representation ring $R(G) \otimes \C$ in terms of equivariant cycles. The main new technique for proving this theorem is our non-abelian completion theorem (Theorem 4.3) for equivariant $K$-theory. Theorem 4.3 generalizes the classical localization theorems for diagonalizable group actions to arbitrary groups.
We show that there exist non-trivial families of algebraic varieties for which all the fibers above rational points (or even above points of odd degree) are torsors of abelian varieties representing nonzero elements of their Shafarevich-Tate groups.
We discuss Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities in charactetistic 0 as well as more recent progress, both on simplifying and improving Hironaka's method of proof and on new results and directions on families of varieties, leading to joint work on toroidal orbifolds with Michael Temkin and Jarosław Włodarczyk.
It is shown that to every Q-linear cycle \barαmodulo numerical equivalence on an abelian variety A there is canonically associated a Q-linear cycle αmodulo rational equivalence on A lying above \barα. The assignment \barα-> αrespects the algebraic operations and pullback and push forward along homomorphisms of abelian varieties.
Let $X$ be a cubic hypersurface in $\mathbb P^6$ or a hypersurface of degree greater than equal to $7$ in $\mathbb P^5$. In this note we try to understand, for a very general hyperplane section of $X$, the non-injectivity locus of the corresponding push-forward homomorphism at the level of Chow group of certain dimension.
We show that in a certain subfamily of the Kuranishi family of any half Inoue surface the algebraic dimensions of the fibers jump downwards at special points of the parameter space showing that the upper semi-continuity of algebraic dimensions in any sense does not hold in general for families of compact non-Kaehler manifolds. In the Kaehler case, the upper semi-continuity always holds true in a certain weak sense.
We show that the cycle map on a variety X, from algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence to integer cohomology, lifts canonically to a topologically defined quotient of the complex cobordism ring of X. This more refined cycle map gives a topological proof that the Griffiths group is nonzero for some varieties X, without any use of Hodge theory. We also use this more refined cycle map to give examples of torsion algebraic cycles which map to 0 in Deligne cohomology but are not algebraically equivalent to 0, thus answering some questions by Colliot-Thelene and Schoen.
For any separated algebraic space $X/S$ we construct a separated algebraic space $Γ^d(X/S)$ -- the space of divided powers -- which parameterizes zero cycles of degree $d$ on $X$. The space of divided powers for an affine scheme is given by the spectrum of the algebra of divided powers. In characteristic zero or when $X/S$ is flat, the constructed space coincides with the symmetric product $Sym^d(X/S)$. We also prove several fundamental results on the kernels of multiplicative polynomial laws necessary for the construction of $Γ^d(X/S)$.
Following an idea of Totaro, we prove that the classical integral cycle class map from algebraic cycles to étale cohomology factors through a quotient of $\ell$-adic étale cobordism over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. This shows that there is a strong topological obstruction for cohomology classes to be algebraic and that examples of Atiyah, Hirzebruch and Totaro also work in positive characteristic.
In this paper, we prove a motivic enhancement of the theorem of the fixed part in Hodge theory due to Deligne. In the pure motivic case, this was done for the first time by André in [And96]. Our main result is an extension to the mixed case, which strengthens a result by Arapura [Ara13] and also provides an alternative and simpler proof, in the framework of Nori motives, of a result by Ayoub [Ayo14].
We develop differential algebraic K-theory of regular arithmetic schemes. Our approach is based on a new construction of a functorial, spectrum level Beilinson regulator using differential forms. We construct a cycle map which represents differential algebraic K-theory classes by geometric vector bundles. As an application we derive Lott's relation between short exact sequences of geometric bundles with a higher analytic torsion form.
We characterize universally generalizing morphisms which satisfy descent of algebraic cycles integrally as those universally generalizing morphisms which are surjective with generically reduced fibres. In doing so, we introduce a naive pull-back of cycles for arbitrary morphisms between noetherian schemes, which generalizes the classical pull-back for flat morphisms, and then prove basic properties of this naive pull-back.
We study a formal deformation problem for rational algebraic cycle classes motivated by Grothendieck's variational Hodge conjecture. We argue that there is a close connection between the existence of a Chow-Künneth decomposition and the existence of expected deformations of cycles. This observation applies in particular to abelian schemes.
In this note we are going to consider a smooth projective surface equipped with an involution and study the action of the involution at the level of Chow group of zero cycles.
We obtain the trace map image of the values of certain harmonic volumes for some quotients of Fermat curves. This provides the algorithm that the algebraic cycles called by the k-th Ceresa cycles are not algebraically equivalent to zero in the Jacobian varieties.
For every even number $n$, and every $n$-dimensional smooth hypersurface of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d$, we compute the periods of all its $\frac{n}{2}$-dimensional complete intersection algebraic cycles. Furthermore, we determine the image of the given algebraic cycle under the cycle class map inside the De Rham cohomology group of the corresponding hypersurface in terms of its Griffiths basis and the polarization. As an application, we use this information to address variational Hodge conjecture for a non complete intersection algebraic cycle. We prove that the locus of general hypersur…
We compute some value of the harmonic volume for the Fermat sextic. Using this computation, we prove that some special algebraic cycle in the Jacobian variety of the Fermat sextic is not algebraically equivalent to zero.
Voevodsky has conjectured that numerical equivalence and smash-equivalence coincide for algebraic cycles on any smooth projective variety. Building on work of Vial and Kahn-Sebastian, we give some new examples of varieties where Voevodsky's conjecture is verified.
Using fundamental results of Deligne, we prove a nilpotence theorem for algebraic cycles and use this to prove a torsion nilpotence result for correspondences on surfaces.
Let X --> S be a smooth projective family of surfaces over a smooth curve S such that the generic fiber is a surface with Weil H^2 spanned by divisors and trivial H^1. We prove that if the relative motive of X/S is finite-dimensional the Chow group CH^2(X) with coefficients in Q is generated by a multisection and vertical cycles, i.e. one-dimensional cycles lying in closed fibers of the map X --> S. If S is the projective line P^1 then CH^2(X) is a direct sum of n+1 copies of Q where n<=b_2 and b_2 is the second Betti number of the generic fiber. Vertical generators in CH^2(X) can be concretel…
We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.
In $2000$, Colliot-Thélène and Poonen showed how to construct algebraic families of genus one curves violating the Hasse principle. Poonen explicitly constructed an algebraic family of genus one cubic curves violating the Hasse principle using the general method developed by Colliot-Thélène and himself. The main result in this paper generalizes the result of Colliot-Thélène and Poonen to arbitrarily high genus hyperelliptic curves. More precisely, for $n > 5$ and $n \not\equiv 0 \pmod{4}$, we show that there is an algebraic family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $n$ that is counterexamples to…
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We work out the action of the blowup or 'discriminant' polarization on some natural cycles in the Hilbert scheme, including generalized diagonals and cycles, called 'node scrolls', parametrizing schemes supported on singular points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautologic…
We give a theorem of Leray-Hirsch type for Chow groups and use it to study the Hogde and Grothendieck's standard conjectures for algebraic fiber bundles of Leray-Hirsch type. Morevoer, the Hodge conjecture for product varieties will also be considered.
We prove some value of the harmonic volume for the Klein quartic $C$ is nonzero modulo ${1/2}\{mathbb Z}$, using special values of the generalized hypergeometric function ${}_3F_2$. This result tells us the algebraic cycle $C-C^-$ is not algebraically equivalent to zero in the Jacobian variety $J(C)$.
Let $\otimes$ be the map which classifies the tensor product of two line bundles, an extension of this map to the space of all codimension 1 algebraic cycles is constructed. It is proved that this extension cannot exist in codimension greater than 1.
We study the monodromies and the limit mixed Hodge structures of families of complete intersection varieties over a punctured disk in the complex plane. For this purpose, we express their motivic nearby fibers in terms of the geometric data of some Newton polyhedra. In particular, the limit mixed Hodge numbers and some part of the Jordan normal forms of the monodromies of such a family will be described very explicitly.
This article proposes a generalization of tautological rings introduced by Beauville and Moonen for Jacobians. The main result is that, under certain hypotheses, the special subvarieties of Prym varieties are algebraically equivalent and their classes belong to the tautological ring.
In this article we show how the data of integrals of algebraic differential forms over algebraic cycles can be used in order to prove that algebraic and Hodge cycle deformations of a given algebraic cycle are equivalent. As an example, we prove that most of the Hodge and algebraic cycles of the Fermat sextic fourfold cannot be deformed in the underlying parameter space. We then take a difference of two linear cycles inside the Fermat variety, and gather evidences that the Hodge locus corresponding to this is smooth and reduced. This implies the existence of new algebraic cycles in the Fermat v…
We study the p-adic deformation properties of algebraic cycle classes modulo rational equivalence. We show that the crystalline Chern character of a vector bundle lies in a certain part of the Hodge filtration if and only if, rationally, the class of the vector bundle lifts to a formal pro-class in K-theory on the p-adic scheme.
This note is about an old conjecture of Voisin, which concerns zero--cycles on the self-product of surfaces of geometric genus one. We prove this conjecture for surfaces with $p_g=1$ and $q=2$.
We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli space of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus $\leq 6$. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for lower genera.
