We study the local topological zeta function associated to a complex function that is holomorphic at the origin of C^2 (respectively C^3). We determine all possible poles less than -1/2 (respectively -1). On C^2 our result is a generalization of the fact that the log canonical threshold is never in ]5/6,1[. Similar statements are true for the motivic zeta function.
The local topological zeta function is a rational function associated to a germ of a complex holomorphic function. This function can be computed from an embedded resolution of singularities of the germ. For nondegenerate functions it is also possible to compute it from the Newton polyhedron. Both ways give rise to a set of candidate poles of the topological zeta function, containing all poles. For plane curves, Veys showed how to filter the actual poles out of the candidate poles induced by the resolution graph. In this note we show how to determine from the Newton polyhedron of a nondegenerat…
To an ideal in $\mathbb{C}[x,y]$ one can associate a topological zeta function. This is an extension of the topological zeta function associated to one polynomial. But in this case we use a principalization of the ideal instead of an embedded resolution of the curve. In this paper we will study two questions about the poles of this zeta function. First, we will give a criterion to determine whether or not a candidate pole is a pole. It turns out that we can know this immediately by looking at the intersection diagram of the principalization, together with the numerical data of the exceptional …
We show some examples of topological zeta functions associated to an isolated plane curve singular point and an allowed, in the sense of Némethi and Veys, differential form that have several poles of order two. This is in contrast to the case of the standard differential form where, as showed by Veys for plane curves and by Nicaise and Xu in general, there is always at most one pole of order two.
We study the topological zeta function Z_{top,f}(s) associated to a polynomial f with complex coefficients. This is a rational function in one variable and we want to determine the numbers that can occur as a pole of some topological zeta function; by definition these poles are negative rational numbers. We deal with this question in any dimension. Denote P_n := {s_0 | \exists f in C[x_1,..., x_n] : Z_{top,f}(s) has a pole in s_0}. We show that {-(n-1)/2-1/i | i in Z_{>1}} is a subset of P_n; for n=2 and n=3, the last two authors proved before that these are exactly the poles less then -(n-1)/…
The main objects of study in this paper are the poles of several local zeta functions: the Igusa, topological and motivic zeta function associated to a polynomial or (germ of) holomorphic function in n variables. We are interested in poles of maximal possible order n. In all known cases (curves, non-degenerate polynomials) there is at most one pole of maximal order n which is then given by the log canonical threshold of the function at the corresponding singular point. For an isolated singular point we prove that if the log canonical threshold yields a pole of order n of the corresponding (loc…
Let f be a regular function on a nonsingular complex algebraic variety of dimension d. We prove a formula for the motivic zeta function of f in terms of an embedded resolution. This formula is over the Grothendieck ring itself, and specializes to the formula of Denef and Loeser over a certain localization. We also show that the space of n-jets satisfying f=0 can be partitioned into locally closed subsets which are isomorphic to a cartesian product of some variety with an affine space of dimension the round up of dn/2. Finally, we look at the consequences for the poles of the motivic zeta funct…
We prove a 1999 conjecture of Veys, which says that the opposite of the log canonical threshold is the only possible pole of maximal order of Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated with a germ of a regular function on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic zero. We apply similar methods to study the weight function on the Berkovich skeleton associated with a degeneration of Calabi-Yau varieties. Our results suggest that the weight function induces a flow on the non-archimedean analytification of the degeneration towards the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton.
The numerical data of an embedded resolution determine the candidate poles of Igusa's p-adic zeta function. We determine in complete generality which real candidate poles are actual poles in the curve case.
We introduce a new method which enables us to calculate the coefficients of the poles of local zeta functions very precisely and prove some explicit formulas. Some vanishing theorems for the candidate poles of local zeta functions will be also given. Moreover we apply our method to oscillating integrals and obtain an explicit formula for the coefficients of their asymptotic expansions.
The aim of this paper is to describe explicitly the poles of the meromorphic continuation of the Igusa local zeta function associated to several polynomials. Using resolution of singularities is possible to express the Igusa's local zeta function as a finite sum of p-adic monomial integrals. We compute these monomial integrals using techniques of toroidal geometry. In this way, we obtain an explicit list for the candidates to poles of the local zeta function associated to several polynomials.
In this article, we compute the motivic Igusa zeta function of a space monomial curve that appears as the special fiber of an equisingular family whose generic fiber is a complex plane branch. To this end, we determine the irreducible components of the jet schemes of such a space monomial curve. This approach does not only yield a closed formula for the motivic zeta function, but also allows to determine its poles. We show that, while the family of the jet schemes of the fibers is not flat, the number of poles of the motivic zeta function associated with the space monomial curve is equal to th…
Let K be a p-adic field. We explore Igusa's p-adic zeta function, which is associated to a K-analytic function on an open and compact subset of K^n. First we deduce a formula for an important coefficient in the Laurent series of this meromorphic function at a candidate pole. Afterwards we use this formula to determine all values less than -1/2 for n=2 and less than -1 for n=3 which occur as the real part of a pole.
We study the poles and residues of the complex zeta function $ f^s $ of a plane curve. We prove that most non-rupture divisors do not contribute to poles of $ f^s $ or roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial $ b_f(s) $ of $ f $. For plane branches we give an optimal set of candidates for the poles of $ f^s $ from the rupture divisors and the characteristic sequence of $ f $. We prove that for generic plane branches $ f_{gen} $ all the candidates are poles of $ f_{gen}^s $. As a consequence, we prove Yano's conjecture for any number of characteristic exponents if the eigenvalues of the monodromy…
In this article, we study local zeta functions over non-Archimedean locals fields of arbitrary characteristic attached to rational functions and characters $χ$ of the units of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{K}$, by using an approach based on the multivariate $π$-adic stationary phase formula and Newton polyhedra. When the rational function is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we give an explicit formula for the local zeta function and a list of the possible poles in terms of the normal vectors of the supporting hyperplanes of the Newton polyhedron attached to the ration…
For a complex polynomial or analytic function f, one has been studying intensively its so-called local zeta functions or complex powers; these are integrals of |f|^{2s}w considered as functions in s, where the w are differential forms with compact support. There is a strong correspondence between their poles and the eigenvalues of the local monodromy of f. In particular Barlet showed that each monodromy eigenvalue of f is of the form exp(a2iπ), where a is such a pole. We prove an analogous result for similar p-adic complex powers, called Igusa (local) zeta functions, but mainly for the related…
In this paper, we give a description of the possible poles of the local zeta function attached to a complex or real analytic mapping in terms of a log-principalization of an ideal associated to the mapping. When the mapping is a non-degenerate one, we give an explicit list for the possible poles of the corresponding local zeta function in terms of the normal vectors to the supporting hyperplanes of a Newton polyhedron attached to the mapping, and some additional vectors (or rays) that appear in the construction of a simplicial conical subdivision of the first orthant. These results extend the …
In 2011 Lemahieu and Van Proeyen proved the Monodromy Conjecture for the local topological zeta function of a non-degenerated surface singularity. We start from their work and obtain the same result for Igusa's p-adic and the motivic zeta function. In the p-adic case, this is, for a polynomial f in Z[x,y,z] satisfying f(0,0,0)=0 and non-degenerated with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we show that every pole of the local p-adic zeta function of f induces an eigenvalue of the local monodromy of f at some point of the complex zero locus of f close to the origin. Essentially the entire paper is…
To a polynomial $f$ over a non-archimedean local field $K$ and a character $χ$ of the group of units of the valuation ring of $K$ one associates Igusa's local zeta function $Z(s,f,χ)$. In this paper, we study the local zeta function $Z(s,f,χ)$ associated to a non-degenerate polynomial $f$, by using an approach based on the p-adic stationary phase formula and Néron p-desingularization. We give a small set of candidates for the poles of $Z(s,f,χ)$ in terms of the Newton polyhedron $ Γ(f)$ of $f$. We also show that for almost all $χ$, the local zeta function $Z(s,f,χ)$ is a polynomial in $q^{-s}$…
In this paper we provide a geometric description of the possible poles of the Igusa local zeta function associated to an analytic mapping and a locally constant function, in terms of a log-principalizaton of an ideal naturally attached to the mapping. Typically our new method provides a much shorter list of possible poles compared with the previous methods. We determine the largest real part of the poles of the Igusa zeta function, and then as a corollary, we obtain an asymptotic estimation for the number of solutions of an arbitrary system of polynomial congruences in terms of the log-canonic…
Let K be a p-adic field, R the valuation ring of K, P the maximal ideal of R and q the cardinality of the residue field R/P. Let f be a polynomial over R in n>1 variables and let χbe a character of R^{\times}. Let M_i(u) be the number of solutions of f=u in (R/P^i)^n for i \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0} and u \in R/P^i. These numbers are related with Igusa's p-adic zeta function Z_{f,χ}(s) of f. We explain the connection between the M_i(u) and the smallest real part of a pole of Z_{f,χ}(s). We also prove that M_i(u) is divisible by q^{\ulcorner(n/2)(i-1)\urcorner}, where the corners indicate that we …
A notion of Milnor fibration for meromorphic functions and the corresponding concepts of monodromy and monodromy zeta function have been introduced in [GZLM1]. In this article we define the topological zeta function for meromorphic germs and we study its poles in the plane case. We show that the poles do not behave as in the holomorphic case but still do satisfy a generalization of the monodromy conjecture.
In this article, we introduce a notion of non-degeneracy, with respect to certain Newton polyhedra, for rational functions over non-Archimedean locals fields of arbitrary characteristic. We study the local zeta functions attached to non-degenerate rational functions, we show the existence of a meromorphic continuation for these zeta functions, as rational functions of $q^{-s}$, and give explicit formulas. In contrast with the classical local zeta functions, the meromorphic continuation of zeta functions for rational functions have poles with positive and negative real parts.
Conjectures of J. Igusa for p-adic local zeta functions and of J. Denef and F. Loeser for topological local zeta functions assert that (the real part of) the poles of these local zeta functions are roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomials (i.e. the b-functions). We prove these conjectures for certain hyperplane arrangements, including the case of reduced hyperplane arrangements in three-dimensional affine space.
We give an explicit formula for the motivic zeta function in terms of a log smooth model. It generalizes the classical formulas for snc-models, but it gives rise to much fewer candidate poles, in general. As an illustration, we explain how the formula for Newton non-degenerate polynomials can be viewed as a special case of our results.
This is a survey on motivic zeta functions associated to abelian varieties and Calabi-Yau varieties over a discretely valued field. We explain how they are related to Denef and Loeser's motivic zeta function associated to a complex hypersurface singularity and we investigate the relation between the poles of the zeta function and the eigenvalues of the monodromy action on the tame $\ell$-adic cohomology of the variety. The motivic zeta function allows to generalize many interesting arithmetic invariants from abelian varieties to Calabi-Yau varieties and to compute them explicitly on a model wi…
The main objective of this paper is to prove the monodromy conjecture for the local Igusa zeta function of a quasi-ordinary polynomial of arbitrary dimension defined over a number field. In order to do it, we compute the local Denef-Loeser motivic zeta function $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)$ of a quasi-ordinary power series $h$ of arbitrary dimension over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero from its characteristic exponents without using embedded resolution of singularities. This allows us to effectively represent $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)=P(T)/Q(T)$ such that almost all the candidate poles g…
We prove for abelian varieties a global form of Denef and Loeser's motivic monodromy conjecture, in arbitrary characteristic. More precisely, we prove that for every tamely ramified abelian variety $A$ over a complete discretely valued field, its motivic zeta function has a unique pole at Chai's base change conductor $c(A)$ of $A$, and that the order of this pole equals one plus the potential toric rank of $A$. Moreover, we show that for every embedding of $\Q_\ell$ in $\C$, the value $\exp(2πi c(A))$ is an $\ell$-adic tame monodromy eigenvalue of $A$. The main tool in the paper is Edixhoven's…
Let I be an arbitrary ideal in C[[x,y]]. We use the Newton algorithm to compute by induction the motivic zeta function of the ideal, yielding only few poles, associated to the faces of the successive Newton polygons. We associate a minimal Newton tree to I, related to using good coordinates in the Newton algorithm, and show that it has a conceptual geometric interpretation in terms of the log canonical model of I. We also compute the log canonical threshold from a Newton polygon and strengthen Corti's inequalities.
We explain the proof, obtained in collaboration with Chenyang Xu, of a 1999 conjecture of Veys about poles of maximal order of Igusa zeta functions. The proof technique is based on the Minimal Model Program in birational geometry, but the proof was heavily inspired by ideas coming from non-archimedean geometry and mirror symmetry; we will outline these relations at the end of the paper. This text is intended to be a low-tech introduction to these topics; we only assume that the reader has a basic knowledge of algebraic geometry.
We extend the approach Abbott, Kedlaya and Roe to computation of the zeta function of a projective hypersurface with $τ$ isolated ordinary double points over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ given by the reduction of a homogeneous polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[x_0, \ldots, x_n]$, under the assumption of equisingularity over $\mathbb{Z}_q$. The algorithm is based on the results of Dimca and Saito (over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers) on the pole order spectral sequence in the case of ordinary double points. We give some examples of explicit computations for surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$.
This article investigates the monodromy conjecture for a space monomial curve that appears as the special fiber of an equisingular family of curves with a plane branch as generic fiber. Roughly speaking, the monodromy conjecture states that every pole of the motivic, or related, Igusa zeta function induces an eigenvalue of monodromy. As the poles of the motivic zeta function associated with such a space monomial curve have been determined in earlier work, it remains to study the eigenvalues of monodromy. After reducing the problem to the curve seen as a Cartier divisor on a generic embedding s…
Let $f$ be a polynomial function over the complex numbers and let $ϕ$ be a smooth function over $\mathbb{C}$ with compact support. When $f$ is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we give an explicit list of candidate poles for the complex local zeta function attached to $f$ and $ϕ$. The provided list is given just in terms of the normal vectors to the supporting hyperplanes of the Newton polyhedron attached to $f$. More precisely, our list does not contain the candidate poles coming from the additional vectors required in the regular conical subdivision of the first orthant, …
In the 70's Igusa developed a uniform theory for local zeta functions and oscillatory integrals attached to polynomials with coefficients in a local field of characteristic zero. In the present article this theory is extended to the case of rational functions, or, more generally, meromorphic functions f/g, with coefficients in a local field of characteristic zero. This generalization is far from being straightforward due to the fact that several new geometric phenomena appear. Also, the oscillatory integrals have two different asymptotic expansions: the 'usual' one when the norm of the paramet…
We show that the real parts of the poles of the Igusa zeta function of a monomial ideal can be computed from the torus-invariant divisors on the normalized blowing-up along the ideal. Moreover, we show that every such number is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial associated to the monomial ideal.
For a nonzero ideal I of C[x_1,...,x_n], with 0 in supp I, a generalization of a conjecture of Igusa - Denef - Loeser predicts that every pole of its topological zeta function is a root of its Bernstein-Sato polynomial. However, typically only a few roots are obtained this way. Following ideas of Veys, we study the following question. Is it possible to find a collection G of polynomials g in C[x_1,...,x_n], such that, for all g in G, every pole of the topological zeta function associated to I and the volume form gdx on the affine n-space, is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of I, and su…
Let $C$ be a projective smooth connected curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, let $F$ be its field of functions, let $C_0$ be a dense open subset of $C$. Let $X$ be a projective flat morphism to $C$ whose generic fiber $X_F$ is a smooth equivariant compactification of $G$ such that $D=X_F\setminus G_F$ is a divisor with strict normal crossings, let $U$ be a surjective and flat model of $G$ over $C_0$. We consider a motivic height zeta function, a formal power series with coefficients in a suitable Grothendieck ring of varieties, which takes into account the spaces o…
We define a power series associated with a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring, encoding information on the Segre classes defined by extensions of the ideal in projective spaces of arbitrarily high dimension. We prove that this power series is rational, with poles corresponding to generators of the ideal, and with numerator of bounded degree and with nonnegative coefficients. We also prove that this `Segre zeta function' only depends on the integral closure of the ideal. The results follow from good functoriality properties of the `shadows' of rational equivalence classes of projective bund…
In this article, we study local zeta functions attached to Laurent polynomials over p-adic fields, which are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton polytopes at infinity. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for p-adic oscillatory integrals attached to Laurent polynomials. We show the existence of two different asymptotic expansions for p-adic oscillatory integrals, one when the absolute value of the parameter approaches infinity, the other when the absolute value of the parameter approaches zero. These two asymptotic expansions are controlled by the poles of twisted local ze…
Let $K$ be a discretely-valued field. Let $X\rightarrow Spec K$ be a surface with trivial canonical bundle. In this paper we construct a weak Néron model of the schemes $Hilb^n(X)$ over the ring of integers $R\subseteq K$. We exploit this construction in order to compute the Motivic Zeta Function of $Hilb^n(X)$ in terms of $Z_X$. We determine the poles of $Z_{Hilb^n(X)}$ and study its monodromy property, showing that if the monodromy conjecture holds for $X$ then it holds for $Hilb^n(X)$ too. Sit $K$ corpus cum absoluto ualore discreto. Sit $ X\rightarrow Spec K$ leuigata superficies cum canon…
The monodromy conjecture states that every pole of the topological (or related) zeta function induces an eigenvalue of monodromy. This conjecture has already been studied a lot; however, in full generality it is proven only for zeta functions associated to a polynomial in two variables. In this article we consider zeta functions associated to an ideal. First we work in arbitrary dimension and obtain a formula (like the one of A'Campo) to compute the 'Verdier monodromy' eigenvalues associated to an ideal. Afterwards we prove a generalized monodromy conjecture for arbitrary ideals in two variabl…
This paper is dedicated to the description of the poles of the Igusa local zeta functions $Z(s,f,v)$ when $f(x,y)$ satisfies a new non degeneracy condition, that we have called arithmetic non degeneracy. More precisely, we attach to each polynomial $f(x,y)$, a collection of convex sets $Γ^{A}$ called the arithmetic Newton polygon of $f(x,y)$, and introduce the notion of arithmetic non degeneracy with respect to $Γ^{A}(f)$. The set of degenerate polynomials, with respect to a fixed geometric Newton polygon, contains an open subset, for the Zariski topology, formed by non degenerate polynomials …
In this paper we prove that there exists a Zariski dense open subset U defined over the rationals Q in the space of all one-variable rational functions with arbitrary k poles of prescribed orders, such that for every geometric point f in U(Qbar)$, the L-function of the exponential sum of f at a prime p has Newton polygon approaching the Hodge polygon as p approaches infinity. As an application to algebraic geometry, we prove that the p-adic Newton polygon of the zeta function of a p-cover of the projective line totally ramified at arbitrary k points of prescribed orders has an asymptotic gener…
The holomorphy conjecture states roughly that Igusa's zeta function associated to a hypersurface and a character is holomorphic on $\mathbb{C}$ whenever the order of the character does not divide the order of any eigenvalue of the local monodromy of the hypersurface. In this article we prove the holomorphy conjecture for surface singularities which are nondegenerate over $\mathbb{C}$ with respect to their Newton polyhedron. In order to provide relevant eigenvalues of monodromy, we first show a relation between the normalized volume (which appears in the formula of Varchenko for the zeta functi…
We study the twisted local zeta function associated to a polynomial in two variables with coefficients in a non-Archimedean local field of arbitrary characteristic. Under the hypothesis that the polynomial is arithmetically non degenerate, we obtain an explicit list of candidates for the poles in terms of geometric data obtained from a family of arithmetic Newton polygons attached to the polynomial. The notion of arithmetical non degeneracy due to Saia and Zúñiga-Galindo is weaker than the usual notion of non degeneracy due to Kouchnirenko. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for…
In this paper, we study the arithmetic zeta function $$\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}(s) = \prod_p \prod_{\substack{x \in \mathcal{X}_p \\ \text{closed}}} \Big( \frac{1}{1-|κ(x)|^{-s}} \Big)^{\mathfrak{m}_{p}(x)}$$ associated to a scheme $\mathcal{X}$ of finite type over $\mathbb{Z}$, where $κ(x)$ denotes the residue field and $\mathfrak{m}_{p}(x)$ the multiplicity of $x$ in $\mathcal{X}_p$. If $\mathcal{X}$ is defined over a finite field, then $\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}$ appears naturally in the context of point counting with multiplicities. We prove that $\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}$ admits a merom…
We study motivic zeta functions for $\mathds{Q}$-divisors in a $\mathds{Q}$-Gorenstein variety. By using a toric partial resolution of singularities we reduce this study to the local case of two normal crossing divisors where the ambient space is an abelian quotient singularity. For the latter we provide a closed formula which is worked out directly on the quotient singular variety. As a first application we provide a family of surface singularities where the use of weighted blow-ups reduces the set of candidate poles drastically. We also present an example of a quotient singularity under the …
In this paper we derive an explicit expression for the normal zeta function of class two nilpotent groups whose associated Pfaffian hypersurface is smooth. In particular, we show how the local zeta function depends on counting mod p rational points on related varieties, and we describe the varieties that can appear in such a decomposition. As a corollary, we also establish explicit results on the degree of polynomial subgroup growth in these groups, and we study the behaviour of poles of this zeta function. Under certain geometric conditions, we also confirm that these functions satisfy a func…
