We define a power series associated with a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring, encoding information on the Segre classes defined by extensions of the ideal in projective spaces of arbitrarily high dimension. We prove that this power series is rational, with poles corresponding to generators of the ideal, and with numerator of bounded degree and with nonnegative coefficients. We also prove that this `Segre zeta function' only depends on the integral closure of the ideal.
The results follow from good functoriality properties of the `shadows' of rational equivalence classes of projective bundles. More precise results can be given if all homogeneous generators have the same degree, and for monomial ideals.
In certain cases, the general description of the Segre zeta function given here leads to substantial improvements in the speed of algorithms for the computation of Segre classes. We also compute the projective ranks of a nonsingular variety in terms of the corresponding zeta function, and we discuss the Segre zeta function of a local complete intersection of low codimension in projective space.
The choice of a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring defines a closed subscheme $Z$ in a projective space as well as an infinite sequence of cones over $Z$ in progressively higher dimension projective spaces. Recent work of Aluffi introduces the Segre zeta function, a rational power series with integer coefficients which captures the relationship between the Segre class of $Z$ and those of its cones. The goal of this note is to define a relative version of this construction for closed subschemes of projective bundles over a smooth variety. If $Z$ is a closed subscheme of such a projective bu…
We study a class obtained from the Segre class $s(Z,Y)$ of an embedding of schemes by incorporating the datum of a line bundle on $Z$. This class satisfies basic properties analogous to the ordinary Segre class, but leads to remarkably simple formulas in standard intersection-theoretic situations such as excess or residual intersections. We prove a formula for the behavior of this class under linear joins, and use this formula to prove that a `Segre zeta function' associated with ideals generated by forms of the same degree is a rational function.
Given a homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring over C, we adapt the construction of Newton-Okounkov bodies to obtain a convex subset of Euclidean space such that a suitable integral over this set computes the Segre zeta function of the ideal. That is, we extract the numerical information of the Segre class of a subscheme of projective space from an associated (unbounded) Newton-Okounkov convex set. The result generalizes to arbitrary subschemes of projective space the numerical form of a previously known result for monomial schemes.
We prove an identity of Segre classes for zero-schemes of compatible sections of two vector bundles. Applications include bounds on the number of equations needed to cut out a scheme with the same Segre class as a given subscheme of (for example) a projective variety, and a `Segre-Bertini' theorem controlling the behavior of Segre classes of singularity subschemes of hypersurfaces under general hyperplane sections. These results interpolate between an observation of Samuel concerning multiplicities along components of a subscheme and facts concerning the integral closure of corresponding ideal…
We present a probabilistic algorithm to test if a homogeneous polynomial ideal $I$ defining a scheme $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ is radical using Segre classes and other geometric notions from intersection theory. Its worst case complexity depends on the geometry of $X$. If the scheme $X$ has reduced isolated primary components and no embedded components supported the singular locus of $X_{\rm red}=V(\sqrt{I})$, then the worst case complexity is doubly exponential in $n$; in all the other cases the complexity is singly exponential. The realm of the ideals for which our radical testing procedure requ…
We show that given an ideal I generated by regular functions f_1,...,f_r on the smooth complex variety X, the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of I is equal to the reduced Bernstein-Sato polynomial of the function g=\sum_{i=1}^rf_iy_i on the product of X with an r-dimensional affine space. By combining this with results from [BMS], we relate invariants and properties of I to those of g. We also use the result on Bernstein-Sato polynomials to show that the Strong Monodromy Conjecture for Igusa zeta functions of principal ideals implies a similar statement for arbitrary ideals.
We study the relation between zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals and roots of b-functions and obtain a criterion to guarantee that roots of b-functions of a reducible polynomial are determined by the zero locus of the associated Bernstein-Sato ideal. Applying the criterion together with a result of Maisonobe we prove that the set of roots of the b-function of a free hyperplane arrangement is determined by its intersection lattice. We also study the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals and the associated relative characteristic cycles for arbitrary central hyperplane arrangements. We prove the mu…
Given a hypersurface, $X$, prime $p$, the zeta function is a generating function for the number of $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ rational points of $X$. Until now, there is no algorithm for computing hypersurfaces with ADE singularities. Scott Stetson and Vladimir Baranovsky provided an algorithm with Mathematica for the ordinary double point case. In this paper, I go over a Sage algorithm for computing the zeta function of a hypersurface with ADE singularities over 3-dimensional projective space. To make the algorithm more efficient, I established an equivalence between a polynomial belonging to the Jacob…
Let $\mathcal J$ be an ideal sheaf on a reduced analytic space $X$ with zero set $Z$. We show that the Lelong numbers of the restrictions to $Z$ of certain generalized Monge-Ampère products $(dd^c\log|f|^2)^k$, where $f$ is a tuple of generators of $\mathcal J$, coincide with the so-called Segre numbers of $\mathcal J$, introduced independently by Tworzewski and Gaffney-Gassler. More generally we show that these currents satisfy a generalization of the classical King formula that takes into account fixed and moving components of Vogel cycles associated with $\mathcal J$. A basic tool is a new …
Let $\mathcal J$ be a coherent ideal sheaf on a complex manifold $X$ with zero set $Z$, and let $G$ be a plurisubharmonic function such that $G=\log|f|+\mathcal O(1)$ locally at $Z$, where $f$ is a tuple of holomorphic functions that defines $\mathcal J$. We give a meaning to the Monge-Ampère products $(dd^c G)^k$ for $k=0,1,2,...$, and prove that the Lelong numbers of the currents $M_k^{\mathcal J}:=\mathbf 1_Z(dd^c G)^k$ at $x$ coincide with the so-called Segre numbers of $\mathcal J$ at $x$, introduced independently by Tworzewski, Gaffney-Gassler, and Achilles-Manaresi. More generally, we s…
Let $V$ be a closed subscheme of a projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. We give an algorithm to compute the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class, Euler characteristic and Segre class of $ V$. The algorithm can be implemented using either symbolic or numerical methods. The algorithm is based on a new method for calculating the projective degrees of a rational map defined by a homogeneous ideal. Using this result and known formulas for the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a projective hypersurface and the Segre class of a projective variety in terms of the projective degrees of certain rational maps we…
Let $X_Σ$ be a smooth complete toric variety defined by a fan $Σ$ and let $V=V(I)$ be a subscheme of $X_Σ$ defined by an ideal $I$ homogeneous with respect to the grading on the total coordinate ring of $X_Σ$. We show a new expression for the Segre class $s(V,X_Σ)$ in terms of the projective degrees of a rational map specified by the generators of $I$ when each generator corresponds to a numerically effective (nef) divisor. Restricting to the case where $X_Σ$ is a smooth projective toric variety and dehomogenizing the total homogeneous coordinate ring of $X_Σ$ via a dehomogenizing ideal we als…
For a pair $(M, I)$, where $M$ is finitely generated graded module over a standard graded ring $R$ of dimension $d$, and $I$ is a graded ideal with $\ell(R/I) < \infty$, we introduce a new invariant $HKd(M, I)$ called the {\em Hilbert-Kunz density function}. In Theorem 1.1, we relate this to the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity $e_{HK}(M,I)$ by an integral formula. We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz density function is additive. Moreover it satisfies a multiplicative formula for a Segre product of rings. This gives a formula for $e_{HK}$ of the Segre product of rings in terms of the HKd of the rings invo…
We prove the existence of a compactly supported, continuous (except at finitely many points) function $g_{I, {\bf m}}: [0, \infty)\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ for all monomial prime ideals $I$ of $R$ of height one where $(R, {\bf m})$ is the homogeneous coordinate ring associated to a projectively normal toric pair $(X, D)$, such that $$\int_{0}^{\infty}g_{I, {\bf m}}(λ)dλ=β(I, {\bf m}),$$ where $β(I, {\bf m})$ is the second coefficient of the Hilbert-Kunz function of $I$ with respect to the maximal ideal ${\bf m}$, as proved by Huneke-McDermott-Monsky \cite{HMM2004}. Using the above result, fo…
