To a polynomial $f$ over a non-archimedean local field $K$ and a character $χ$ of the group of units of the valuation ring of $K$ one associates Igusa's local zeta function $Z(s,f,χ)$. In this paper, we study the local zeta function $Z(s,f,χ)$ associated to a non-degenerate polynomial $f$, by using an approach based on the p-adic stationary phase formula and Néron p-desingularization. We give a small set of candidates for the poles of $Z(s,f,χ)$ in terms of the Newton polyhedron $ Γ(f)$ of $f$. We also show that for almost all $χ$, the local zeta function $Z(s,f,χ)$ is a polynomial in $q^{-s}$ whose degree is bounded by a constant independent of $χ$. Our second result is a description of the largest pole of $Z(s,f, χ_{\text{triv}})$ in terms of $ Γ(f)$ when the distance between $Γ(f)$ and the origin is at most one.
In this article, we introduce a notion of non-degeneracy, with respect to certain Newton polyhedra, for rational functions over non-Archimedean locals fields of arbitrary characteristic. We study the local zeta functions attached to non-degenerate rational functions, we show the existence of a meromorphic continuation for these zeta functions, as rational functions of $q^{-s}$, and give explicit formulas. In contrast with the classical local zeta functions, the meromorphic continuation of zeta functions for rational functions have poles with positive and negative real parts.
By using sheaf-theoretical methods such as constructible sheaves, we generalize the formula of Libgober-Sperber concerning the zeta functions of monodromy at infinity of polynomial maps into various directions. In particular, some formulas for the zeta functions of global monodromy along the fibers of bifurcation points of polynomial maps will be obtained.
The local topological zeta function is a rational function associated to a germ of a complex holomorphic function. This function can be computed from an embedded resolution of singularities of the germ. For nondegenerate functions it is also possible to compute it from the Newton polyhedron. Both ways give rise to a set of candidate poles of the topological zeta function, containing all poles. For plane curves, Veys showed how to filter the actual poles out of the candidate poles induced by the resolution graph. In this note we show how to determine from the Newton polyhedron of a nondegenerat…
For a generic (polynomial) one-parameter deformation of a complete intersection, there is defined its monodromy zeta-function. We provide explicit formulae for this zeta-function in terms of the corresponding Newton polyhedra in the case the deformation is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedra. Using this result we obtain the formula for the monodromy zeta-function at the origin of a polynomial on a complete intersection, which is an analog of the Libgober--Sperber theorem.
There are two well known tasks, related to Newton polyhedra: to study invariants of singularities in terms of their Newton polyhedra, and to describe Newton polyhedra of resultants and discriminants. We introduce so called resultantal singularities, whose study in terms of Newton polyhedra unifies these two tasks to a certain extent. As an application, we study topological invariants of determinantal singularities and (co)vector fields on singular varieties in terms of Newton polyhedra, and provide new formulations and proofs for a number of well known results. The computations are based on ce…
The local zeta functions (also called Igusa's zeta functions) over p-adic fields are connected with the number of solutions of congruences and exponential sums mod p^{m}. These zeta functions are defined as integrals over open and compact subsets with respect to the Haar measure. In this paper, we introduce new integrals defined over submanifolds, or more generally, over non-degenerate complete intersection varieties, and study their connections with some arithmetical problems such as estimation of exponential sums mod p^{m}. In particular we extend Igusa's method for estimating exponential su…
We construct families of Newton-Okounkov bodies for the free group character varieties and configuration spaces of any connected reductive group. We use this construction to give a proof that these spaces are Cohen-Macaulay.
For a one-parameter deformation of an analytic complex function germ of several variables, there is defined its monodromy zeta-function. We give a Varchenko type formula for this zeta-function if the deformation is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton diagram.
Let $f \colon \mathbb{R}^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a polynomial and $\mathcal{Z}(f)$ its zero set. In this paper, in terms of the so-called Newton polyhedron of $f,$ we present a necessary criterion and a sufficient condition for the compactness of $\mathcal{Z}(f).$ From this we derive necessary and sufficient criteria for the stable compactness of $\mathcal{Z}(f).$
By introducing motivic Milnor fibers at infinity of polynomial maps, we propose some methods for the study of nilpotent parts of monodromies at infinity. The numbers of Jordan blocks in the monodromy at infinity will be described by the Newton polyhedron at infinity of the polynomial.
The ring of conditions defined by C. De Concini and C. Procesi is an intersection theory for algebraic cycles in a spherical homogeneous space. In the paper we consider the ring of conditions for the group $(C^*)^n$. Up to a big extend this ring can be reduced to the cohomology rings of smooth projective toric varieties. This ring also can be described using tropical geometry. We recall these known results and provide a new description of this ring in terms of convex integral polyhedra.
Let I be an arbitrary ideal in C[[x,y]]. We use the Newton algorithm to compute by induction the motivic zeta function of the ideal, yielding only few poles, associated to the faces of the successive Newton polygons. We associate a minimal Newton tree to I, related to using good coordinates in the Newton algorithm, and show that it has a conceptual geometric interpretation in terms of the log canonical model of I. We also compute the log canonical threshold from a Newton polygon and strengthen Corti's inequalities.
Let $f$ be a polynomial function over the complex numbers and let $ϕ$ be a smooth function over $\mathbb{C}$ with compact support. When $f$ is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we give an explicit list of candidate poles for the complex local zeta function attached to $f$ and $ϕ$. The provided list is given just in terms of the normal vectors to the supporting hyperplanes of the Newton polyhedron attached to $f$. More precisely, our list does not contain the candidate poles coming from the additional vectors required in the regular conical subdivision of the first orthant, …
In this paper we provide a geometric description of the possible poles of the Igusa local zeta function associated to an analytic mapping and a locally constant function, in terms of a log-principalizaton of an ideal naturally attached to the mapping. Typically our new method provides a much shorter list of possible poles compared with the previous methods. We determine the largest real part of the poles of the Igusa zeta function, and then as a corollary, we obtain an asymptotic estimation for the number of solutions of an arbitrary system of polynomial congruences in terms of the log-canonic…
A new transparent proof of the well known good compactification theorem for the complex torus $(\Bbb C^*)^n$ is presented. This theorem provides a powerful tool in enumerative geometry for subvarieties in the complex torus. The paper also contains an algorithm constructing a good compactification for a subvariety in $(\Bbb C^*)^n$ explicitly defined by a system of equations. A new theorem on a torodoidal like compactification is stated. A transparent proof of this generalization of the good compactification theorem which is similar to proofs and constructions from this paper will be presented …
Given a complex algebraic hypersurface~$H$, we introduce a polyhedral complex which is a subset of the Newton polytope of the defining polynomial for~$H$ and enjoys the key topological and combinatorial properties of the amoeba of~$H.$ We provide an explicit formula for this polyhedral complex in the case when the spine of the amoeba is dual to a triangulation of the Newton polytope of the defining polynomial. In particular, this yields a description of the polyhedral complex when the hypersurface is optimal.
For a system of polynomial equations, whose coefficients depend on parameters, the Newton polyhedron of its discriminant is computed in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the coefficients. This leads to an explicit formula (involving mixed fiber polyhedra and Euler obstructions of toric varieties) in the unmixed case, suggests certain open questions in general, and generalizes a number of similar known results. The argument is based on a formula for the support function of a mixed fiber body, which also suggests a new proof for existence of mixed fiber bodies.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate order of contact on real hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^n$ by using Newton polyhedra which are important notion in the study of singularity theory. To be more precise, an equivalence condition for the equality of regular type and singular type is given by using the Newton polyhedron of a defining function for the respective hypersurface. Furthermore, a sufficient condition for this condition, which is more useful, is also given. This sufficient condition is satisfied by many earlier known cases (convex domains, pseudoconvex Reinhardt domains and pseud…
This is the LaTeX version of the handwritten notes of a lecture at the Kyoto Singularities Symposium held at the RIMS in April 1978. It presents the relationship of various invariants of isolated singularities of complex analytic hypersurfaces with the jacobian Newton polygon built from the polar curves. An appendix presents features of the semiring of Newton polygons, because the product of Jacobian Newton polygons corresponds to the Thom-Sebastiani sum of hypersurfaces. Analogies between mixed multiplicities and mixed volumes are noticed. They have been explained since.
According to a recently proposed scheme for the classification of reflexive polyhedra, weight systems of a certain type play a prominent role. These weight systems are classified for the cases $n=3$ and $n=4$, corresponding to toric varieties with K3 and Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces, respectively. For $n=3$ we find the well known 95 weight systems corresponding to weighted $\IP^3$'s that allow transverse polynomials, whereas for $n=4$ there are 184026 weight systems, including the 7555 weight systems for weighted $\IP^4$'s. It is proven (without computer) that the Newton polyhedra corresponding t…
For p prime, we give an explicit formula for Igusa's local zeta function associated to a polynomial mapping f=(f_1,...,f_t): Q_p^n -> Q_p^t, with f_1,...,f_t in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n], and an integration measure on Z_p^n of the form |g(x)||dx|, with g another polynomial in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n]. We treat the special cases of a single polynomial and a monomial ideal separately. The formula is in terms of Newton polyhedra and will be valid for f and g sufficiently non-degenerated over F_p with respect to their Newton polyhedra. The formula is based on, and is a generalization of results of Denef - Hoornaer…
We show that quite universally the holonomicity of the complexity function of a big divisor on a projective variety does not predict the polyhedrality of the Newton-Okounkov body associated to every flag.
We establish a principal value integral formula, for the residue of the largest non-trivial candidate pole of the real or complex local zeta function associated to an analytic germ f, which is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron. In particular, up to an easy non-zero factor, this residue only depends on the (tau_0)-principal part of f, where tau_0 is the smallest face of the Newton polyhedron intersecting the diagonal. This formula allows us to prove some vanishing results for the residue. More precisely, we prove that the residue vanishes when tau_0 is unstable, and we give a…
In a recent paper Zúñiga-Galindo and the author begun the study of the local zeta functions for Laurent polynomials. In this work we continue this study by giving a very explicit formula for the local zeta function associated to a Laurent polynomial $f$ over a $p-$adic field, when $f$ is weakly non-degenerate with respect to the Newton polytope of $f$ at infinity.
We propose a computation of real motivic zeta functions for real polynomial functions, using Newton polyhedron. As a consequence we show that the weights are blow-Nash invariants of convenient weighted homogeneous polynomials in three variables.
We introduce a new non-degeneracy condition at infinity for a real or a mixed polynomial mapping $F$ which allows us to approximate its bifurcation locus in terms of certain Newton polyhedra. We derive a sufficiency result for the Jacobian problem in the setting of mixed mappings.
We give an explicit formula for the motivic zeta function in terms of a log smooth model. It generalizes the classical formulas for snc-models, but it gives rise to much fewer candidate poles, in general. As an illustration, we explain how the formula for Newton non-degenerate polynomials can be viewed as a special case of our results.
This paper is dedicated to the description of the poles of the Igusa local zeta functions $Z(s,f,v)$ when $f(x,y)$ satisfies a new non degeneracy condition, that we have called arithmetic non degeneracy. More precisely, we attach to each polynomial $f(x,y)$, a collection of convex sets $Γ^{A}$ called the arithmetic Newton polygon of $f(x,y)$, and introduce the notion of arithmetic non degeneracy with respect to $Γ^{A}(f)$. The set of degenerate polynomials, with respect to a fixed geometric Newton polygon, contains an open subset, for the Zariski topology, formed by non degenerate polynomials …
In 2011 Lemahieu and Van Proeyen proved the Monodromy Conjecture for the local topological zeta function of a non-degenerated surface singularity. We start from their work and obtain the same result for Igusa's p-adic and the motivic zeta function. In the p-adic case, this is, for a polynomial f in Z[x,y,z] satisfying f(0,0,0)=0 and non-degenerated with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we show that every pole of the local p-adic zeta function of f induces an eigenvalue of the local monodromy of f at some point of the complex zero locus of f close to the origin. Essentially the entire paper is…
In this article, we study local zeta functions over non-Archimedean locals fields of arbitrary characteristic attached to rational functions and characters $χ$ of the units of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{K}$, by using an approach based on the multivariate $π$-adic stationary phase formula and Newton polyhedra. When the rational function is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we give an explicit formula for the local zeta function and a list of the possible poles in terms of the normal vectors of the supporting hyperplanes of the Newton polyhedron attached to the ration…
In this paper we prove that there exists a Zariski dense open subset U defined over the rationals Q in the space of all one-variable rational functions with arbitrary k poles of prescribed orders, such that for every geometric point f in U(Qbar)$, the L-function of the exponential sum of f at a prime p has Newton polygon approaching the Hodge polygon as p approaches infinity. As an application to algebraic geometry, we prove that the p-adic Newton polygon of the zeta function of a p-cover of the projective line totally ramified at arbitrary k points of prescribed orders has an asymptotic gener…
In this paper we present a p-adic algorithm to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate curve over a finite field using Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology. The paper vastly generalizes previous work since all known cases, e.g. hyperelliptic, superelliptic and C_{ab} curves, can be transformed to fit the nondegenerate case. For curves with a fixed Newton polytope, the property of being nondegenerate is generic, so that the algorithm works for almost all curves with given Newton polytope. For a genus g curve over F_{p^n}, the expected running time is O(n^3g^6 + n^2g^{6.5}), whereas the space compl…
A codimension one singular holomorphic foliation is Newton non-degenerate if it satisfies the classical conditions of Kouchnirenko and Oka, in terms of its Newton polyhedra system. In this paper we prove that a foliation is Newton non-degenerate if and only if it admits a logarithmic reduction of singularities of a combinatorial nature.
This paper has been withdrawn. Consider an isolated complex hypersurface singularity, f(x_1,..,x_n)=0. For Newton-non-degenerate singularities the local topology is completely determined by an associated polyhedral object, the Newton diagram. "Most" singularities are not Newton-non-degenerate, for any choice of local coordinates. An old question of Arnol'd asks whether for any hypersurface singularity there exists a stabilization, f(x_1,...,x_n)+z^2_1+...+z^2_r, that becomes Newton-non-degenerate after some change of coordinates. The answer is: "totally no". We give some simple obstructions an…
Let $f(\mathbf z)$ be an analytic function defined in the neighborhood of the origin of $\mathbb C^n$ which have some Newton degenerate faces. We generalize the Varchenko formula for the zeta function of the Milnor fibration of a Newton non-degenerate function $f$ to this case. As an application, we give an example of a pair of hypersurfaces with the same Newton boundary and the same zeta function with different tangent cones.
This paper formulates an elementary algorithm for resolution of singularities in a neighborhood of a singular point over a field of characteristic zero. The algorithm is composed of finite sequences of Newton polyhedra and monomial transformations and based on Weierstrass preparation theorem. This approach entails such new methods as canonical reduction and synthesis of monomial transformations as well as latency and revival of primary variables. The orders of primary variables serve as the decreasing singularity invariants for the algorithm albeit with some temporary increases. A finite parti…
Let $ \mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k $ be finite sets in $ \mathbb{Z}^n $ and let $ Y \subset (\mathbb{C}^*)^n $ be an algebraic variety defined by a system of equations \[ f_1 = \ldots = f_k = 0, \] where $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $ are Laurent polynomials with supports in $\mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k$. Assuming that $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $ are sufficiently generic, the Newton polyhedron theory computes discrete invariants of $ Y $ in terms of the Newton polyhedra of $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $. It may appear that the generic system with fixed supports $ \mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k $ i…
In this article, we study local zeta functions attached to Laurent polynomials over p-adic fields, which are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton polytopes at infinity. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for p-adic oscillatory integrals attached to Laurent polynomials. We show the existence of two different asymptotic expansions for p-adic oscillatory integrals, one when the absolute value of the parameter approaches infinity, the other when the absolute value of the parameter approaches zero. These two asymptotic expansions are controlled by the poles of twisted local ze…
We show that for a hypersurface Batyrev's stringy E-function can be seen as a residue of the Hodge zeta function, a specialization of the motivic zeta function of Denef and Loeser. This is a nice application of inversion of adjunction. If an affine hypersurface is given by a polynomial that is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron, then the motivic zeta function and thus the stringy E-function can be computed from this Newton polyhedron (by work of Artal, Cassou-Nogues, Luengo and Melle based on an algorithm of Denef and Hoornaert). We use this procedure to obtain an easy way to…
In this paper, we give a description of the possible poles of the local zeta function attached to a complex or real analytic mapping in terms of a log-principalization of an ideal associated to the mapping. When the mapping is a non-degenerate one, we give an explicit list for the possible poles of the corresponding local zeta function in terms of the normal vectors to the supporting hyperplanes of a Newton polyhedron attached to the mapping, and some additional vectors (or rays) that appear in the construction of a simplicial conical subdivision of the first orthant. These results extend the …
We develop techniques for computing zeta functions associated with nilpotent groups, not necessarily associative algebras, and modules, as well as Igusa-type zeta functions. At the heart of our method lies an explicit convex-geometric formula for a class of $p$-adic integrals under non-degeneracy conditions with respect to associated Newton polytopes. Our techniques prove to be especially useful for the computation of topological zeta functions associated with algebras, resulting in the first systematic investigation of their properties.
We consider the notions of Groebner fan and Newton non-degeneracy for an ideal on a toric variety, extending the two existing notions for ideals on affine spaces. We prove, without assumptions on the characteristic of the base fields, that the "Groebner fan" of such an ideal is actually a polyhedral fan and that a sub-variety defined by a Newton non-degenerate ideal on a toric variety $X_σ$ admits a toric embedded resolution of singularities $Z\longrightarrow X_σ.$
We compute a basis for the p-adic Dwork cohomology of a smooth complete intersection in projective space over a finite field and use it to give p-adic estimates for the action of Frobenius on this cohomology. In particular, we prove that the Newton polygon of the characteristic polynomial of Frobenius lies on or above the associated Hodge polygon. This result was first proved by B. Mazur using crystalline cohomology.
The monodromy conjecture is an umbrella term for several conjectured relationships between poles of zeta functions, monodromy eigenvalues and roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials in arithmetic geometry and singularity theory. Even the weakest of these relations -- the Denef--Loeser conjecture on topological zeta functions -- is open for surface singularities. We prove it for a wide class of multidimensional singularities that are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton polyhedra, including all such singularities of functions of four variables. A crucial difference from the known case of thr…
We prove that for two germs of analytic mappings $f,g\colon (\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C}^p,0)$ with the same Newton polyhedra which are (Khovanskii) non-degenerate and their zero sets are complete intersections with isolated singularity at the origin, there is a piecewise analytic family $\{f_t\}$ of analytic maps with $f_0=f, f_1=g$ which has a so-called {\it uniform stable radius for the Milnor fibration}. As a corollary, we show that their Milnor numbers are equal. Also, a formula for the Milnor number is given in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the component functions. This is…
We introduce two generalizations of Newton-non-degenerate (Nnd) singularities of hypersurfaces. Roughly speaking, an isolated hypersurface singularity is called topologically Newton-non-degenerate (tNnd) if the local embedded topological singularity type can be restored from a collection of Newton diagrams (for some coordinate choices). A singularity that is not tNnd is called essentially Newton-degenerate. For plane curves we give an explicit characterization of tNnd singularities; for hypersurfaces we provide several examples. Next, we treat the question: whether Nnd or tNnd is a property of…
We study the twisted local zeta function associated to a polynomial in two variables with coefficients in a non-Archimedean local field of arbitrary characteristic. Under the hypothesis that the polynomial is arithmetically non degenerate, we obtain an explicit list of candidates for the poles in terms of geometric data obtained from a family of arithmetic Newton polygons attached to the polynomial. The notion of arithmetical non degeneracy due to Saia and Zúñiga-Galindo is weaker than the usual notion of non degeneracy due to Kouchnirenko. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for…
The well-known Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem from the theory of Newton polyhedra relates algebraic geometry and the theory of mixed volumes. Recently the authors have found a far-reaching generalization of this theorem to generic systems of algebraic equations on any quasi-projective variety. In the present note we review these results and their applications to algebraic geometry and convex geometry.
A Zariski pair of surfaces is a pair of complex polynomial functions in $\mathbb{C}^3$ which is obtained from a classical Zariski pair of projective curves $f_0(z_1,z_2,z_3)=0$ and $f_1(z_1,z_2,z_3)=0$ of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$ by adding a same term of the form $z_i^{d+m}$ ($m\geq 1$) to both $f_0$ and $f_1$ so that the corresponding affine surfaces of $\mathbb{C}^3$ -- defined by $g_0:=f_0+z_i^{d+m}$ and $g_1:=f_1+z_i^{d+m}$ -- have an isolated singularity at the origin and the same zeta-function for the monodromy associated with their Milnor fibrations (so, in particular, $g_0$ and $g_…
We study the Newton polygons of numerators of the zeta functions of $2$-rank $0$ hyperelliptic curves in characteristic $2$. We determine their first generic vertex, and their first vertex in some other non generic cases.
