Motivated by our study (elsewhere) of linear syzygies of homogeneous ideals generated by quadrics and their restrictions to subvarieties of the ambient projective space, we investigate in this note possible zero-dimensional intersections of two Veronese surfaces in P^5.
The case of two Veronese surfaces in P^5 meeting in 10 simple points appears also in work of Coble, Conner and Reye in relation to the 10 nodes of a quartic symmetroid in P^3, and we provide here a modern account for some of their results.
In this paper we describe all possible reduced complete intersection sets of points on Veronese surfaces. We formulate a conjecture for the general case of complete intersection subvarieties of any dimension and we prove it in the case of the quadratic Veronese threefold. Our main tool is an effective characterization of all possible Hilbert functions of reduced subvarieties of Veronese surfaces.
We show that for every prime $p$, there is a class of Veronese varieties which are set-theoretic complete intersections if and only if the ground field has characteristic $p$.
This note describes moduli spaces of complexes in the derived category of a Veronese double cone $Y$. Focusing on objects with the same class $κ_1$ as ideal sheaves of lines, we describe the moduli space of Gieseker stable sheaves and show that it has two components. Then, we study the moduli space of stable complexes in the Kuznetsov component of $Y$ of the same class, which also has two components. One parametrizes ideal sheaves of lines and it appears in both moduli spaces. The other components are not directly related by a wall-crossing: we show this by describing an intermediate moduli sp…
In this note we describe the image of $\PP^2$ in $ Gr(2, \CC^{4})$ under a morphism given by a rank two vector bundle on $\PP^2$ with Chern classes $(2,2).$
In this note we consider multiples aD, where D is a divisor of the blow-up of P^n along points in general position which appears in the Alexander and Hirschowitz list of Veronese embeddings having defective secant varieties. In particular we show that there is such a D with h^1(X,D) > 0 and h^1(X,2D) = 0.
Let V be the Veronese cubic surface in P^9. We classify the projections of V to P^8 whose coordinate rings are Koszul. In particular we obtain a purely theoretical proof of the Koszulness of the pinched Veronese, a result obtained originally by Caviglia using filtrations, deformations and computer assisted computations. To this purpose we extend, to certain complete intersections, results of Conca, Herzog, Trung and Valla concerning homological properties of diagonal algebras.
In this paper we present a key exchange protocol in which Alice and Bob have secret keys given by quadric surfaces embedded in a large ambient space by means of the Veronese embedding and public keys given by hyperplanes containing the embedded quadrics. Both of them reconstruct the isomorphism class of the intersection which is a curve of genus 1, which is uniquely determined by the $j$-invariant. An eavesdropper, to find this $j$-invariant, has to solve problems which are conjecturally quantum resistant.
This paper is concerned with the geometry of the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $14$ points on $\mathbb{A}^6$. This scheme has two components: the smoothable one and an exceptional one. We prove that the latter is smooth and identify the intersection of components as a vector bundle over the Iliev-Ranestad divisor in the space of cubic fourfolds. The ninth secant variety of the triple Veronese reembedding lies inside the Iliev-Ranestad divisor. We point out that this secant variety is set-theoretically a codimension two complete intersection and discuss the degrees of its equations.
We calculate a Griffiths-type ring for smooth complete intersection in Grassmannians. This is the analogue of the classical Jacobian ring for complete intersections in projective space, and allows us to explicitly compute their Hodge groups.
Fano varieties are subvarieties of the Grassmannian whose points parametrize linear subspaces contained in a given projective variety. These expository notes give an account of results on Fano varieties of complete intersections, with a view toward an application in machine learning. The prerequisites have been kept to a minimum in order to make these results accessible to a broad audience.
We prove that the GKZ $\mathscr{D}$-module $\mathcal{M}_{A}^β$ arising from Calabi--Yau fractional complete intersections in toric varieties is complete, i.e., all the solutions to $\mathcal{M}_{A}^β$ are period integrals. This particularly implies that $\mathcal{M}_{A}^β$ is equivalent to the Picard--Fuchs system. As an application, we give explicit formulae of the period integrals of Calabi--Yau threefolds coming from double covers of $\mathbf{P}^{3}$ branch over eight hyperplanes in general position.
In a previous paper the authors develop an intersection theory for subspaces of rational functions on an algebraic variety X over complex numbers. In this note, we first extend this intersection theory to an arbitrary algebraically closed ground field. Secondly we give an isomorphism between the group of b-divisors on the birational class of X and the Grothendieck group of the semigroup of subspaces of rational functions on X. The constructed isomorphism moreover preserves the intersection numbers. This provides an alternative approach to b-divisors and their intersection theory.
In this short note, we expose some of the works on Serre intersection multiplicity conjecture. I provide a proof of the vanishing of Serre intersection multiplicity in non-proper intersection over a regular ring based on the intersection theory in W. Fulton.
This is a note on calculating intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves. A codimension 3 relation among tautological classes on the moduli space of genus 4 curves is given.
The goal of this note is to give a short geometric proof of a theorem of Hrushovski asserting that an intersection of a correspondence with a graph of a sufficiently large power of Frobenius is non-empty.
It is easy to imagine that a subvariety of a vector bundle, whose intersection with every fibre is a vector subspace of constant dimension, must necessarily be a sub-bundle. We give two examples to show that this is not true, and several situations in which the implication does hold. For example it is true if the base is normal and the field has characteristic zero. A convenient test is whether or not the intersections with the fibres are reduced as schemes.
In this note we prove that the enlarged Witten's conjecture is true in the case of the Boussinesq hierarchy for correlators in genus 3 with descendants only at one point.
In this note, we would like to propose a suitable extension of the arithmetic Chow group of codimension one, in which the Hodge index theorem holds. We also prove an arithmetic analogue of Bogomolov's instability theorem for rank 2 vector bundles on arbitrary regular projective arithmetic varieties.
In this note, we investigate the maximal number of intersection points of a line with the contour of hypersurface amoebas in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We define the latter number to be the $\mathbb{R}$-degree of the contour. We also investigate the $\mathbb{R}$-degree of related sets such as the boundary of amoebas and the amoeba of the real part of hypersurfaces defined over $\mathbb{R}$. For all these objects, we provide bounds for the respective $\mathbb{R}$-degrees.
The goal of this note is to show that in the case of transversal intersections the "true local terms" appearing in the Lefschetz trace formula equal to the "naive local terms". To prove the result we extend the method of [Va], where the case of contracting correspondences is treated. Our new ingredients are the observation of Verdier that specialization of any etale sheaf to the normal cone is monodromic and the assertion that in some cases local terms are "constant in families". As an application, we get a generalization of the Deligne-Lusztig trace formula.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. We apply a theorem of C. Han to give an explicit description for the weak Lefschetz property of the monomial Artinian complete intersection A = K[X,Y,Z]/(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) in terms of d and p. This answers a question of J. Migliore, R. M. Miro-Roig and U. Nagel and, equivalently, characterizes for which characteristics the rank-2 syzygy bundle Syz(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) on PP^2 satisfies the Grauert-Muelich theorem. As a corollary we obtain that for p=2 the algebra A has the weak Lefschetz property if and only if d=(2^t+1)/3 or d=(2^t-1)/3 for s…
The aim of this note is to give a simple definition of genus zero virtual orientation classes (or fundamental classes) for projective complete intersections or, more generally, for complete intersections in convex varieties, and to prove a push forward formula for them.
In this note we build on our previous work with Takehiko Yasuda to prove a precise version of inversion of adjunction for varieties which are local complete intersections.
In this note, we give a Morse-type bigness criterion for the difference of two pseudo-effective $(1,1)$-classes by using movable intersections. As an application, we give a Morse-type bigness criterion for the difference of two movable $(n-1,n-1)$-classes.
In this short note we prove a formula for local heights on elliptic curves over number fields in terms of intersection theory on a regular model over the ring of integers.
We study the problem of maximum likelihood estimation for $3$-dimensional linear spaces of $3\times 3$ symmetric matrices from the point of view of algebraic statistics where we view these nets of conics as linear concentration or linear covariance models of Gaussian distributions on $\mathbb{R}^3$. In particular, we study the reciprocal surfaces of nets of conics which are rational surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^5$. We show that the reciprocal surfaces are projections from the Veronese surface and determine their intersection with the polar nets. This geometry explains the maximum likelihood degrees…
In this short note, we study the semi-simplicity of the quantum cohomology algebra H(V, C) of a Fano complete intersection V, and show that the subspace of H(V, C) generated by the hyperplane sections is semi-simple in the sense of Dubrovin when the degree of V satisfies certain conditions.
This note is an extended version of a thirty minutes talk given at the "XIX Congresso dell'Unione Matematica Italiana", held in Bologna from September 12th to September 17th, 2011. This was essentially a survey talk about connections between Kobayashi hyperbolicity properties and positivity properties of the canonical bundle of projective algebraic varieties.
Let K be an algebraic number field and O_K the ring of integers of K. Let f : X --> Spec(O_K) be a stable arithmetic surface over O_K of genus g >= 2. In this short note, we will prove that if f has a reducible geometric fiber, then the self intersection of dualizing sheaf of X with Arakelov metric is greater than or equal to log(2)/6(g-1).
In this note we address the problem of determining the maximum number of points of intersection of two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curves in $\PP^3$. We give a sharp upper bound for the maximum number of points of intersection of two irreducible arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curves $C_t$ and $C_{t-r}$ in $\PP^3$ defined by the maximal minors of a $t \times (t+1)$, resp. $(t-r) \times (t-r+1)$, matrix with linear entries, provided $C_{t-r}$ has no linear series of degree $d\leq{{t-r+1}\choose 3}$ and dimension $n\geq t-r$.
These notes are an account of a series of lectures I gave at the LMS-CMI Research School `Homotopy Theory and Arithmetic Geometry: Motivic and Diophantine Aspects', in July 2018, at the Imperial College London. The goal of these notes is to see how motives may be used to enhance cohomological methods, giving natural ways to prove independence of $\ell$ results for traces and zeta-functions, and constructions of characteristic classes (as $0$-cycles). This leads to the Grothendieck-Lefschetz formula, of which we give a new motivic proof. There are also a few additions to what have been told in …
This note proves combinatorially that the intersection pairing on the middle dimensional compactly supported cohomology of a smooth toric hyperkaehler variety is always definite, providing a large number of non-trivial L^2 harmonic forms for toric hyperkaehler metrics on these varieties. This is motivated by a result of Hitchin about the definiteness of the pairing of L^2 harmonic forms on complete hyperkaehler manifolds of linear growth.
