Euler's transformation formula for the Gauss hypergeometric function 2F1 is extended to hypergeometric functions of higher order. Unusually, the generalized transformation constrains the hypergeometric function parameters algebraically but not linearly. Its consequences for hypergeometric summation are explored. It has as corollary a summation formula of Slater. From this formula new one-term evaluations of 2F1(-1) and 3F2(1) are derived, by applying transformations in the Thomae group. Their parameters are also constrained nonlinearly. Several new one-term evaluations of 2F1(-1) with linearly constrained parameters are derived as well.
In this paper, we investigate the Euler-type integral representations for the generalized hypergeometric matrix function and develop some transformations in terms of hypergeometric matrix functions. Furthermore, unit and half arguments have been provided for several particular cases.
We derive hypergeometric formulas for Euler's constant, gamma. A "by-product" of Thomae's transformation is an infinite product for e^gamma involving the binomial coefficients. Alternate, non-hypergeometric proofs use a double integral for gamma, the beta integral, and an integral for the digamma function. (I thank P. Sebah, S. Zlobin, and W. Zudilin for valuable suggestions used in the paper.)
We introduce an interpolation between Euler integral and Laplace integral: Euler-Laplace integral. We establish a combinatorial method of constructing a basis of the rapid decay homology group associated to Euler-Laplace integral with a nice intersection property. This construction yields a remarkable expansion formula of cohomology intersection numbers in terms of GKZ hypergeometric series. As an application, we obtain closed formulas of the quadratic relations of Aomoto-Gelfand hypergeometric functions and their confluent analogue in terms of bipartite graphs.
We survey the applications of an elementary identity used by Euler in one of his proofs of the Pentagonal Number Theorem. Using a suitably reformulated version of this identity that we call Euler's Telescoping Lemma, we give alternate proofs of all the key summation theorems for terminating Hypergeometric Series and Basic Hypergeometric Series, including the terminating Binomial Theorem, the Chu--Vandermonde sum, the Pfaff--Saalch\" utz sum, and their $q$-analogues. We also give a proof of Jackson's $q$-analog of Dougall's sum, the sum of a terminating, balanced, very-well-poised $_8ϕ_7$ sum. …
Using an integral of a hypergeometric function, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for irrationality of Euler's constant $γ$. The proof is by reduction to known irrationality criteria for $γ$ involving a Beukers-type double integral. We show that the hypergeometric and double integrals are equal by evaluating them. To do this, we introduce a construction of linear forms in 1, $γ$, and logarithms from Nesterenko-type series of rational functions. In the Appendix, Sergey Zlobin gives a change-of-variables proof that the series and the double integral are equal.
We obtain addition formulas for $_{p}F_{p}$ and $_{p+1}F_{p}$ generalized hypergeometric functions with general parameters. These are utilized in conjunction with integral representations of these functions to derive Kummer- and Euler-type transformations that express $_{p}F_{p}\left(x\right)$ and $_{p+1}F_p\left(x\right)$ in the form of sums of $_{p}F_{p}\left(-x\right)$ and $_{p+1}F_p\left(-x\right)$ functions, respectively.
We consider four types of representations of solutions of GKZ system: series representations, Laplace integral representations, Euler integral representations, and Residue integral representations which will be introduced in this paper. In the former half of this paper, we provide a method for constructing integration cycles for Laplace, Residue, and Euler integral representations and relate them to series representations. In the latter half, we reformulate our integral representations in terms of direct images of $D$-modules and show their equivalence.
We show that several classical bilateral summation and transformation formulas have semi-finite forms. We obtain these semi-finite forms from unilateral summation and transformation formulas. Our method can be applied to derive Ramanujan's $_1ψ_1$ summation, Bailey's $_2ψ_2$ transformations, and Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ summation.
This article gives a classification scheme of algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions, or pull-back transformations between hypergeometric differential equations. The classification recovers the classical transformations of degree 2, 3, 4, 6, and finds other transformations of some special classes of the Gauss hypergeometric function. The other transformations are considered more thoroughly in a series of supplementing articles.
Darboux Transformation, well known in second order differential operator theory, is applied here to the difference equation satisfied by the discrete hypergeometric polynomials(Charlier, Meixner-Krawchuk, Hahn).
The paper classifies algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions with the local exponent differences $(1/2,1/4,1/4)$, $(1/2,1/3,1/6)$ and $(1/3,1/3,1/3)$. These form a special class of algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions, of arbitrary high degree. The Gauss hypergeometric functions can be identified as elliptic integrals on the genus 1 curves $y=x^3-x$ or $y=x^3-1$. Especially interesting are algebraic transformations of the hypergeometric functions into themselves; these transformations come from isogenies of the respective elliptic curves.
In this survey paper, we exhaustively explore the terminating basic hypergeometric representations of the Askey-Wilson polynomials and the corresponding terminating basic hypergeometric transformations that these polynomials satisfy. From the terminating basic hypergeometric representations of these polynomials, and due to symmetry in their free parameters, we are able to exhaustively explore the terminating basic hypergeometric transformation formulae which these polynomials satisfy.
The hypergeometric and Heun functions are classical special functions. Transformation formulas between them are commonly induced by pull-back transformations of their differential equations, with respect to some coverings P1-to-P1. This gives expressions of Heun functions in terms of better understood hypergeometric functions. This article presents the list of hypergeometric-to-Heun pull-back transformations with a free continuous parameter, and illustrates most of them by a Heun-to-hypergeometric reduction formula. In total, 61 parametric transformations exist, of maximal degree 12.
New duality transformation formulas are proposed for multiple elliptic hypergeometric series of type $BC$ and of type $C$. Various transformation and summation formulas are derived as special cases to recover some previously known results.
Hypergeometric equations with a dihedral monodromy group can be solved in terms of elementary functions. This paper gives explicit general expressions for quadratic monodromy invariants for these hypergeometric equations, using a generalization of Clausen's formula and terminating double hypergeometric sums. Besides, pull-back transformations for the dihedral hypergeometric equations are presented, including Klein's pullback transformations for the equations with a finite (dihedral) monodromy group.
This paper presents explicit algebraic transformations of some Gauss hypergeometric functions. Specifically, the transformations considered apply to hypergeometric solutions of hypergeometric differential equations with the local exponent differences $1/K,1/L,1/M$ such that $K,L,M$ are positive integers and $1/K+1/L+1/M<1$. All algebraic transformations of these Gauss hypergeometric functions are considered. We show that apart from classical transformations of degree 2, 3, 4, 6 there are several other transformations of degree 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 18, 24. Besides, we present an algorithm to comput…
We derive two generalizations of Gasper's transformation formula for basic hypergeometric series. Using these generalized formulas, we give explicit expressions for the coefficients of three-term relations for the basic hypergeometric series {}_{2}phi_{1}, which are generalizations of the author's previous results on three-term relations for {}_{2}phi_{1}.
In this paper, a generalization of Ramanujan's cubic transformation, in the form of an inequality, is proved for zero-balanced Gaussian hypergeometric function $F(a,b;a+b;x)$, $a,b>0$.
In this note we state (with minor corrections) and give an alternative proof of a very general hypergeometric transformation formula due to Slater. As an application, we obtain a new hypergeometric transformation formula for a ${}_5F_4(-1)$ series with one pair of parameters differing by unity expressed as a linear combination of two ${}_3F_2(1)$ series.
Using multiple q-integrals and a determinant evaluation, we establish a multivariable extension of Bailey's nonterminating 10-phi-9 transformation. From this result, we deduce new multivariable terminating 10-phi-9 transformations, 8-phi-7 summations and other identities. We also use similar methods to derive new multivariable 1-psi-1 summations. Some of our results are extended to the case of elliptic hypergeometric series.
This paper deals with the evaluation of some definite Euler-type integrals in terms of the Wright hypergeometric function. We obtain a theorem on the Wright hypergeometric function and then use this theorem to evaluate some definite integrals. Further, we derive some results as applications of these evaluations. Multi-variable cases of the derived results of this paper are also briefly discussed.
In this brief note, we show how to apply Kummer's and other quadratic transformation formulas for Gauss' and generalized hypergeometric functions in order to obtain transformation and summation formulas for series with harmonic numbers that contain one or two continuous parameters. We also give a generating function of the sequence $\frac{(a)_n (1-a)_n}{(n!)^2}H_n$ as a combination of Gauss hypergeometric function and elementary functions.
We present here the $q$-analogues of certain transformations or reduction formulae for Srivastava-Daoust type double hypergeometric series. These reduction formulae are derived by utilizing the extended Bailey's Transform developed and studied by Joshi and Vyas [Int. J. Math. Sci., (12), 2005, 1909-1927]. A number of well-known $q$-hypergeometric transformations are also obtained as special cases of our results.
We give elementary derivations of several classical and some new summation and transformation formulae for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. For purpose of motivation, we review our previous simple proof ("A simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation", Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear) of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Using a similar but different method, we now give elementary derivations of some transformations for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. In particular, these include M. Jackson's very-well-poised 8-psi-8 transformation, a very-well-poised …
We propose a systematic study of transformations of $A$-hypergeometric functions. Our approach is to apply changes of variables corresponding to automorphisms of toric rings, to Euler-type integral representations of $A$-hypergeometric functions. We show that all linear $A$-hypergeometric transformations arise from symmetries of the corresponding polytope. As an application of the techniques developed here, we show that the Appell function $F_4$ does not admit a certain kind of Euler-type integral representation.
We give a new method to prove in a uniform and easy way various transformation formulas for Gauss hypergeometric functions. The key is Jacobi's canonical form of the hypergeometric differential equation. Analogy for $q$-hypergeometric functions is also studied.
In this article we prove a new elliptic hypergeometric integral identity. It previously appeared (as a conjecture) in articles by Rains, and Spiridonov and Vartanov. Moreover it gives a different proof of an identity in another article by Rains. We also give some basic hypergeometric and classical limits of this identity. The classical limit gives identities (some known, some new) between generalizations of the Selberg integral.
E661 in the Enestrom index. This was originally published as "Variae considerationes circa series hypergeometricas" (1776). In this paper Euler is looking at the asymptotic behavior of infinite products that are similar to the Gamma function. He looks at the relations between some infinite products and integrals. He takes the logarithm of these infinite products, and expands these using the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula. In section 14, Euler seems to be rederiving some of the results he already proved in the paper. However I do not see how these derivations are different. If any readers th…
Some multiple hypergeometric transformation formulas arising from the balanced du- ality transformation formula are discussed through the symmetry. Derivations of some transformation formulas with different dimensions are given by taking certain limits of the balanced duality transformation. By combining some of them, some transformation formulas for $A_n$ basic hypergeometric series is given. They include some generalizations of Watson, Sears and ${}_8 W_7$ transformations.
In this paper, we will obtain new algebraic transformations of the $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions. The main novelty in our approach is the interpretation of identities among $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions as identities among automorphic forms on different Shimura curves.
In this article we give a new transformation between elliptic hypergeometric beta integrals, which gives rise to a Weyl group symmetry of type F_4. The transformation is a generalization of a series transformation discovered by Langer, Schlosser, and Warnaar. Moreover we consider various limits of this transformation to basic hypergeometric functions obtained by letting p tend to 0.
After reviewing some fundamental facts from the theory of theta hypergeometric series we derive, using indefinite summation, several summation, transformation, and expansion formulas for multibasic theta hypergeometric series. Some of the identities presented here generalize corresponding formulas given in Chapter 11 of the Gasper and Rahman book [Basic hypergeometric series, 2nd ed., Encyclopedia of Mathematics And Its Applications 96, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2004].
In this work we establish new forms of Heun-to-Heun transformations and Heun-to-Hypergeometric transformations. The transformations are realised by changing the independent variable in a non-linear way. Using these we also point out some simple examples of transformations between equations that are not Fuchsian and that generalise the Heun-to-Hypergeometric transformations.
Recently, Kajihara gave a Bailey-type transformation relating basic hypergeometric series on the root system An, with different dimensions n. We give, with a new, elementary, proof, an elliptic analogue of this transformation. We also obtain further Bailey-type transformations as consequences of our result, some of which are new also in the case of basic and classical hypergeometric series.
A celebrated theorem of Klein implies that any hypergeometric differential equation with algebraic solutions is a pull-back of one of the few standard hypergeometric equations with algebraic solutions. The most interesting cases are hypergeometric equations with tetrahedral, octahedral or icosahedral monodromy groups. We give an algorithm for computing Klein's pull-back coverings in these cases, based on certain explicit expressions (Darboux evaluations) of algebraic hypergeometric functions. The explicit expressions can be computed using contiguous relations and a data base of simplest Darbou…
In this paper we consider a transformation $L_a$ of sequences of complex numbers. We find the inverse transformation of $L_a$ as well as the inverse of a related transformation $\tilde{L}_a$. We explore a connection to the binomial transform and significantly generalize a previously known result. We also obtain new relations among many classical hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials as well as new formulas for sums involving terminating hypergeometric series.
The beta integral method proved itself as a simple nonetheless powerful method of generating hypergeometric identities at a fixed argument. In this paper we propose a generalization by substituting the beta density with a particular type of Meijer's G function. By application of our method to known transformation formulas we derive about forty hypergeometric identities, majority of which are believed to be new. We further apply some of these transformations to obtain several new summation formulas.
In 1981, Andrews gave a four-variable generalization of Ramanujan's ${_1ψ_1}$ summation formula. We establish a six-variable generalization of Andrews' identity according to the transformation formula for two ${_8ϕ_7}$ series and Bailey's transformation formula for three ${_8ϕ_7}$ series. Then it is used to find a six-variable generalization of Ramanujan's reciprocity theorem, which is different from Liu's formula. We derive the generalizations of Bailey's two $_3ψ_3$ summation formulas in terms of two limiting relations and Bailey's another transformation formula for three $_8ϕ_7$ series. Bas…
We study multivariable (bilateral) basic hypergeometric series associated with (type $A$) Macdonald polynomials. We derive several transformation and summation properties for such series including analogues of Heine's ${}_2ϕ_1$ transformation, the $q$-Pfaff-Kummer and Euler transformations, the $q$-Saalschütz summation formula and Sear's transformation for terminating, balanced ${}_4ϕ_3$ series. For bilateral series, we rederive Kaneko's analogue of the ${}_1ψ_1$ summation formula and give multivariable extensions of Bailey's ${}_2ψ_2$ transformations.
Pull-back transformations between Heun and Gauss hypergeometric equations give useful expressions of Heun functions in terms of better understood hypergeometric functions. This article classifies, up to Mobius automorphisms, the coverings P1-to-P1 that yield pull-back transformations from hypergeometric to Heun equations with at least one free parameter (excluding the cases when the involved hypergeometric equation has cyclic or dihedral monodromy). In all, 61 parametric hypergeometric-to-Heun transformations are found, of maximal degree 12. Among them, 28 pull-backs are compositions of smalle…
Eric Rains conjectured several quadratic transformations between multivariate elliptic hypergeometric functions in "Elliptic Littlewood Identities", with the integrand multiplied by interpolation functions. In this article two of these conjectures are proven in the case where the interpolation functions are constant, and we obtain a third conjecture as a corollary. Two other equations for elliptic Selberg integrals with 10 parameters, two of which multiplying to pq/t, are given, as they are needed in the proof. The proofs consist essentially of a calculation which strings together many ellipti…
Using Krattenthaler's operator method, we give a new proof of Warnaar's recent elliptic extension of Krattenthaler's matrix inversion. Further, using a theta function identity closely related to Warnaar's inversion, we derive summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series of Karlsson-Minton-type. A special case yields a particular summation that was used by Warnaar to derive quadratic, cubic and quartic transformations for elliptic hypergeometric series. Starting from another theta function identity, we derive yet different summation and transformation formulas for el…
We obtain two new Thomae-type transformations for hypergeometric series with r pairs of numeratorial and denominatorial parameters differing by positive integers. This is achieved by application of the so-called Beta integral method developed by Krattenthaler and Rao [Symposium on Symmetries in Science (ed. B. Gruber), Kluwer (2004)] to two recently obtained Euler-type transformations. Some special cases are given.
We give a new theta-function identity, a special case of which is utilised to prove Kawanaka's Macdonald polynomial conjecture. The theta-function identity further yields a transformation formula for multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series which appears to be new even in the one-variable, basic case.
We study the group of transformations of 4F3 hypergeometric functions evaluated at unity with one unit shift in parameters. We reveal the general form of this family of transformations and its group property. Next, we use explicitly known transformations to generate a subgroup whose structure is then thoroughly studied. Using some known results for 3F2 transformation groups, we show that this subgroup is isomorphic to the direct product of the symmetric group of degree 5 and 5-dimensional integer lattice. We investigate the relation between two-term 4F3 transformations from our group and three…
Structures of symmetries of transformations for Holman-Biedenharn-Louck $A_n$ hypergeometric series: $A_n$ terminating balanced ${}_4 F_3$ series and $A_n$ elliptic ${}_{10} E_9$ series are discussed. Namely the description of the invariance groups and the classification all of possible transformations for each types of $A_n$ hypergeometric series are given. Among them, a "periodic" affine Coxeter group which seems to be new in the literature arises as an invariance group for a class of $A_n$ ${}_4 F_3$ series.
In this paper, we show that the kernel function of Cauchy type for type $BC$ intertwines the commuting family of van Diejen's $q$-difference operators. This result gives rise to a transformation formula for certain multiple basic hypergeometric series of type $BC$. We also construct a new infinite family of commuting $q$-difference operators for which the Koornwinder polynomials are joint eigenfunctions.
In this paper we explore special values of Gaussian hypergeometric functions in terms of products of Euler $Γ$-functions and exponential functions of linear functions of the hypergeometric parameters. They include some classical evaluations, but the main inspiration is from the contiguity method recently applied by Akihito Ebisu.
A master formula of transformation formulas for bilinear sums of basic hypergeometric series is proposed. It is obtained from the author's previous results on a transformation formula for Milne's multivariate generalization of basic hypergeometric series of type $A$ with different dimensions and it can be considered as a generalization of Whipple-Sears transformation formula for terminating balanced ${}_4 ϕ_3$ series. As an application of the master formula, one variable cases of some transformation formulas for bilinear sums of basic hypergeometric series are given as examples. The bilinear t…
It is shown that Ramanujan's cubic transformation of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1$ arises from a relation between modular curves, namely the covering of $X_0(3)$ by $X_0(9)$. In general, when $2\le N\le 7$ the N-fold cover of $X_0(N)$ by $X_0(N^2)$ gives rise to an algebraic hypergeometric transformation. The N=2,3,4 transformations are arithmetic-geometric mean iterations, but the N=5,6,7 transformations are new. In the final two the change of variables is not parametrized by rational functions, since $X_0(6),X_0(7)$ are of genus 1. Since their quotients $X_0^+(6),X_0^+(7)$ unde…

We study the linear Pfaffian systems satisfied by a certain class of hypergeometric functions, which includes Gauß's ${}_2 F_{1}$, Thomae's ${}_L F_{L-1}$ and Appell-Lauricella's $F_D$. In particular, we present a fundamental system of solutions with a characteristic local behavior by means of Euler-type integral representations. We also discuss how they are related to the theory of isomonodromic deformations or Painlevé equations.
We obtain extensions of classical hypergeometric identities of Bailey and Whipple that transform nearly-poised and very-well-poised series to Saalschützian series, Saalschützian series to Saalschützian series, and very-well-poised and nearly-poised series to very-well-poised series. We employ a method in which summations and transformations of lower-order series are used to obtain transformations of higher-order series. By taking limits, we also obtain extensions of two classical quadratic transformations of Whipple and Bailey. Furthermore, we show how a number of other well-known results rega…
