Darboux Transformation, well known in second order differential operator theory, is applied here to the difference equation satisfied by the discrete hypergeometric polynomials(Charlier, Meixner-Krawchuk, Hahn).
Algebraic hypergeometric functions can be compactly expressed as radical functions on pull-back curves where the monodromy group is simpler, say, a finite cyclic group. These so-called Darboux evaluations were already considered for algebraic 2F1-functions. This article presents Darboux evaluations for the classical case of 3F2-functions with the projective monodromy group PSL(2,F7). As an application, appealing modular evaluations of the same 3F2-functions are derived.
This paper presents explicit expressions for algebraic Gauss hypergeometric functions. We consider solutions of hypergeometric equations with the tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral monodromy groups. Conceptually, we pull-back such a hypergeometric equation onto its Darboux curve so that the pull-backed equation has a cyclic monodromy group. Minimal degree of the pull-back coverings is 4, 6 or 12 (for the three monodromy groups, respectively). In explicit terms, we replace the independent variable by a rational function of degree 4, 6 or 12, and transform hypergeometric functions to radica…
A celebrated theorem of Klein implies that any hypergeometric differential equation with algebraic solutions is a pull-back of one of the few standard hypergeometric equations with algebraic solutions. The most interesting cases are hypergeometric equations with tetrahedral, octahedral or icosahedral monodromy groups. We give an algorithm for computing Klein's pull-back coverings in these cases, based on certain explicit expressions (Darboux evaluations) of algebraic hypergeometric functions. The explicit expressions can be computed using contiguous relations and a data base of simplest Darbou…
We develop a theory of Darboux transformations for CMV matrices, canonical representations of the unitary operators. In perfect analogy with their self-adjoint version -- the Darboux transformations of Jacobi matrices -- they are equivalent to Laurent polynomial modifications of the underlying measures. We address other questions which emphasize the similarities between Darboux transformations for Jacobi and CMV matrices, like their (almost) isospectrality or the relation that they establish between the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, showing also that both transformations are connected …
We construct families of bispectral difference operators of the form a(n)T + b(n) + c(n) T^{-1} where T is the shift operator. They are obtained as discrete Darboux transformations from appropriate extensions of Jacobi operators. We conjecture that along with operators previously constructed by Grunbaum, Haine, Horozov, and Iliev they exhaust all bispectral regular (i.e. a(n)c(n) \neq 0, for all integer n) operators of the form above.
We prove a general theorem establishing the bispectrality of noncommutative Darboux transformations. It has a wide range of applications that establish bispectrality of such transformations for differential, difference and q-difference operators with values in all noncommutative algebras. All known bispectral Darboux transformations are special cases of the theorem. Using the methods of quasideterminants and the spectral theory of matrix polynomials, we explicitly classify the set of bispectral Darboux transformations from rank one differential operators and Airy operators with values in matri…
We review Darboux-Crum transformation of Heun's differential equation. By rewriting an integral transformation of Heun's differential equation into a form of elliptic functions, we see that the integral representation is a generalization of Darboux-Crum transformation. We also consider conservation of monodromy with respect to the transformations.
Baecklund-Darboux transformations are closely related to the integrability and symmetry problems. For the generalized Baecklund-Darboux transformation (GBDT), we consider conservation laws, rational extensions and bispectrality. We use the case of the nonlinear optics equation (and its auxiliary linear system) as an example.
Recently a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded lower Hessenberg matrices that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization was presented. These type of matrices are oscillatory. In this paper the Lima-Loureiro hypergeometric multiple orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi-Piñeiro multiple orthogonal polynomials are discussed at the light of this bidiagonal factorization for tetradiagonal matrices. The Darboux transformations of tetradiagonal Hessenberg matrices is studied and Christoffel formulas for the elements of the bidiagonal factorization are given, i.e., the bidiagonal factorization …
We give a full description of Darboux transformations of any order for arbitrary (nondegenerate) differential operators on the superline. We show that every Darboux transformation of such operators factorizes into elementary Darboux transformations of order one. Similar statement holds for operators on the ordinary line.
We obtain an explicit classification of all $2\times 2$ real hypergeometric Bochner pairs, ie. pairs $(W(x),\mathfrak{D})$ consisting of a $2\times 2$ real hypergeometric differential operator $\mathfrak{D}$ and a $2\times 2$ weight matrix satisfying the property that $\mathfrak{D}$ is symmetric with respect to the matrix-valued inner product defined by W(x). Furthermore, we obtain a classifying space of hypergeometric Bochner pairs by describing a bijective correspondence between the collection of pairs and an open subset of a real algebraic set whose smooth paths correspond to isospectral de…
We consider UL and LU stochastic factorizations of the transition probability matrix of a random walk on the integers, which is a doubly infinite tridiagonal stochastic Jacobi matrix. We give conditions on the free parameter of both factorizations in terms of certain continued fractions such that this stochastic factorization is always possible. By inverting the order of the factors (also known as a Darboux transformation) we get new families of random walks on the integers. We identify the spectral matrices associated with these Darboux transformations (in both cases) which are basically conj…
We obtain isomonodromic transformations for Heun's equation by generalizing Darboux transformation, and we find pairs and triplets of Heun's equation which have the same monodromy structure. By composing generalized Darboux transformations, we establish a new construction of the commuting operator which ensures finite-gap property. As an application, we prove conjectures in part III.
Let dμ(t) be a probability measure on [0,+\infty) such that its moments are finite. Then the Cauchy-Stieltjes transform S of dμ(t) is a Stieltjes function, which admits an expansion into a Stieltjes continued fraction. In the present paper, we consider a matrix interpretation of the unwrapping transformation from S(λ) to λS(λ^2), which is intimately related to the simplest case of polynomial mappings. More precisely, it is shown that this transformation is essentially a Darboux transformation of the underlying Jacobi matrix. Moreover, in this scheme, the Chihara construction of solutions to th…
It has been recently discovered that exceptional families of Sturm-Liouville orthogonal polynomials exist, that generalize in some sense the classical polynomials of Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi. In this paper we show how new families of exceptional orthogonal polynomials can be constructed by means of multiple-step algebraic Darboux transformations. The construction is illustrated with an example of a 2-step Darboux transformation of the classical Laguerre polynomials, which gives rise to a new orthogonal polynomial system indexed by two integer parameters. For particular values of these para…
A general theorem on the GBDT version of the Bäcklund-Darboux transformation for systems rationally depending on the spectral parameter is treated and its applications to nonlinear equations are given. Explicit solutions of direct and inverse problems for Dirac-type systems, including systems with singularities, and for the system auxiliary to the $N$-wave equation are reviewed. New results on explicit construction of the wave functions for radial Dirac equation are obtained.
We introduce GBDT version of Darboux transformation for symplectic and Hamiltonian systems as well as for Shin-Zettl systems and Sturm-Liouville equations. These are the first results on Darboux transformation for general-type Hamiltonian and for Shin-Zettl systems. The obtained results are applied to the corresponding transformations of the Weyl-Titchmarsh functions and to the construction of explicit solutions of dynamical symplectic systems, of two-way diffusion equations and of indefinite Sturm-Liouville equations. The energy of the explicit solutions of dynamical systems is expressed (in …
Simple derivation is presented of the four families of infinitely many shape invariant Hamiltonians corresponding to the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. Darboux-Crum transformations are applied to connect the well-known shape invariant Hamiltonians of the radial oscillator and the Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potential to the shape invariant potentials of Odake-Sasaki. Dutta and Roy derived the two lowest members of the exceptional Laguerre polynomials by this method. The method is expanded to its full generality and many other ramifications, including the aspects of generalised Bochner …
An alternative derivation is presented of the infinitely many exceptional Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, which were introduced by the present authors in 2009. Darboux-Crum transformations intertwining the discrete quantum mechanical systems of the original and the exceptional polynomials play an important role. Infinitely many continuous Hahn polynomials are derived in the same manner. The present method provides a simple proof of the shape invariance of these systems as in the corresponding cases of the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.
