This article gives a classification scheme of algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions, or pull-back transformations between hypergeometric differential equations. The classification recovers the classical transformations of degree 2, 3, 4, 6, and finds other transformations of some special classes of the Gauss hypergeometric function. The other transformations are considered more thoroughly in a series of supplementing articles.
We consider A-hypergeometric functions associated to normal sets in the plane. We give a classification of all point configurations for which there exists a parameter vector such that the associated hypergeometric function is algebraic. In particular, we show that there are no irreducible algebraic functions if the number of boundary points is sufficiently large and A is not a pyramid.
From the algebraic solution of $x^{n}-x+t=0$ for $n=2,3,4$ and the corresponding solution in terms of hypergeometric functions, we obtain a set of reduction formulas for hypergeometric functions. By differentiation and integration of these results, and applying other known reduction formulas of hypergeometric functions, we derive new reduction formulas of special functions as well as the calculation of some infinite integrals in terms of elementary functions.
This paper presents explicit expressions for algebraic Gauss hypergeometric functions. We consider solutions of hypergeometric equations with the tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral monodromy groups. Conceptually, we pull-back such a hypergeometric equation onto its Darboux curve so that the pull-backed equation has a cyclic monodromy group. Minimal degree of the pull-back coverings is 4, 6 or 12 (for the three monodromy groups, respectively). In explicit terms, we replace the independent variable by a rational function of degree 4, 6 or 12, and transform hypergeometric functions to radica…
We extend Schwarz' list of irreducible algebraic Gauss functions to the four classes of Appell-Lauricella functions in several variables and the 14 complete Horn functions in two variables. This gives an example of a family of functions such that for any number of variables there are infinitely many algebraic functions, namely the Lauricella $F_C$ functions.
This is a study of terminating and ill-defined Gauss hypergeometric functions. Corresponding hypergeometric equations have a degenerate set of of 24 Kummer's solutions. We describe those solutions and relations between them.
The paper classifies algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions with the local exponent differences $(1/2,1/4,1/4)$, $(1/2,1/3,1/6)$ and $(1/3,1/3,1/3)$. These form a special class of algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions, of arbitrary high degree. The Gauss hypergeometric functions can be identified as elliptic integrals on the genus 1 curves $y=x^3-x$ or $y=x^3-1$. Especially interesting are algebraic transformations of the hypergeometric functions into themselves; these transformations come from isogenies of the respective elliptic curves.
In a previous work ([Eb]), the author proposed a method employing contiguity relations to derive hypergeometric series in closed form. In [Eb], this method was used to derive Gauss's hypergeometric series $_2F_1$ possessing closed forms. Here, we consider the application of this method to Appell's hypergeometetric series $F_1$ and derive several $F_1$ possessing closed forms. Moreover, analyzing these $F_1$, we obtain values of $_2F_1$ with no free parameters. Some of these results provide new examples of algebraic values of $_2F_1$. Key Words and Phrases: Gauss's hypergeometric series, algebr…
The main purpose of this paper is to present closed integral form expressions for the Mathieu-type $\boldsymbol a$-series and its associated alternating version whose terms contain a $(p, q)$-extended Gauss' hypergeometric function. Certain upper bounds for the two series are also given.
Hypergeometric equations with a dihedral monodromy group can be solved in terms of elementary functions. This paper gives explicit general expressions for quadratic monodromy invariants for these hypergeometric equations, using a generalization of Clausen's formula and terminating double hypergeometric sums. Besides, pull-back transformations for the dihedral hypergeometric equations are presented, including Klein's pullback transformations for the equations with a finite (dihedral) monodromy group.
This paper presents explicit algebraic transformations of some Gauss hypergeometric functions. Specifically, the transformations considered apply to hypergeometric solutions of hypergeometric differential equations with the local exponent differences $1/K,1/L,1/M$ such that $K,L,M$ are positive integers and $1/K+1/L+1/M<1$. All algebraic transformations of these Gauss hypergeometric functions are considered. We show that apart from classical transformations of degree 2, 3, 4, 6 there are several other transformations of degree 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 18, 24. Besides, we present an algorithm to comput…
A celebrated theorem of Klein implies that any hypergeometric differential equation with algebraic solutions is a pull-back of one of the few standard hypergeometric equations with algebraic solutions. The most interesting cases are hypergeometric equations with tetrahedral, octahedral or icosahedral monodromy groups. We give an algorithm for computing Klein's pull-back coverings in these cases, based on certain explicit expressions (Darboux evaluations) of algebraic hypergeometric functions. The explicit expressions can be computed using contiguous relations and a data base of simplest Darbou…
In this paper a double integral containing two Gaussian hypergeometric functions is discussed. The integral is not found in the literature and a direct computation is not (yet) possible. Therefore, a complete different integral is computed by two methods. The first method gives a combination of hypergeometric functions and the requested original integral, while with the second method this different integral can be computed directly. Equalization of the results from both methods gives the requested integral.
Inspired by certain interesting recent extensions of the gamma, beta and hypergeometric matrix functions, we introduce here new extension of the gamma and beta matrix function. We also introduce new extensions of the Gauss hypergeometric matrix function, confluent hypergeometric matrix function, Appell matrix function and Lauricella matrix function of three variables in terms of the new extended beta matrix function. Then we investigate certain properties of these extended matrix functions such as the integral representations, differential formulae and recurrence relations.
In 1993 one of the authors formulated some conjectures on monotonicity of ratios for exponential series sections. They lead to more general conjecture on monotonicity of ratios of Kummer hypergeometric functions and was not proved from 1993. In this paper we prove these conjectures in the more general setting for Kummer hypergeometric functions and its further generalizations for Gauss and generalized hypergeometric functions. The results are also closely connected with Turan--type inequalities.
The authors establish the necessary and sufficient conditions under which certain combinations of Gaussian hypergeometric function and elementary function are monotone in the parameter, which generalize the recent results of generalized elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds obtained by Qiu et al. Moreover, the authors also prove two monotonicity theorems of generalized elliptic integrals from another point of view.
The hypergeometric and Heun functions are classical special functions. Transformation formulas between them are commonly induced by pull-back transformations of their differential equations, with respect to some coverings P1-to-P1. This gives expressions of Heun functions in terms of better understood hypergeometric functions. This article presents the list of hypergeometric-to-Heun pull-back transformations with a free continuous parameter, and illustrates most of them by a Heun-to-hypergeometric reduction formula. In total, 61 parametric transformations exist, of maximal degree 12.
In this paper, we will obtain new algebraic transformations of the $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions. The main novelty in our approach is the interpretation of identities among $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions as identities among automorphic forms on different Shimura curves.
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the Gauss hypergeometric function when several of the parameters a, b, c are large. We indicate which cases are of interest for orthogonal polynomials (Jacobi, but also Krawtchouk, Meixner, etc.), which results are already available and which cases need more attention. We also consider a few examples of 3F2-functions of unit argument, to explain which difficulties arise in these cases, when standard integrals or differential equations are not available.
In the last decades, the theory of digamma function has been developed with a high impact of interest by many authors. Here, we established some interesting results for digamma function, and also we have computed the values of digamma function for positive integers, using the concept of hypergeometric series. An attempt has been made to present some summation theorems for Clausen's hypergeometric function. Results presented here are potentially useful in the further study of digamma function.
This paper presents a somewhat exhaustive study on the conformable fractional Gauss hypergeometric function (CFGHF). We start by solving the conformable fractional Gauss hypergeometric equation (CFGHE) about the fractional regular singular points $x=1$ and $x=\infty$. Next, various generating functions of the CFGHF are established. We also develop some differential forms for the CFGHF. Subsequently, differential operators and the contiguous relations are reported. Furthermore, we introduce the conformable fractional integral representation and the fractional Laplace transform of CFGHF. As an a…
We derive all eighteen Gauss hypergeometric representations for the Ferrers function of the second kind, each with a different argument. They are obtained from the eighteen hypergeometric representations of the associated Legendre function of the second kind by using a limit representation. For the 18 hypergeometric arguments which correspond to these representations, we give geometrical descriptions of the corresponding convergence regions in the complex plane. In addition, we consider a corresponding single sum Fourier expansion for the Ferrers function of the second kind. In four of the eig…
We evaluate the sum of Gauss hypergeometric functions \[S(μ,c;x)=\sum_{k\geq 0} \bl(\frac{1-x}{1+μ}\br)^k\,{}_2F_1(\fs k+\fs, \fs k+1;c;x)\] for $x\in [-1,1]$ and positive parameters $μ$ and $c$. The domain of absolute convergence of this series is established by determining the growth of the hypergeometric function for $k\to+\infty$. An application to Galton-Watson branching processes arising in the theory of stochastic processes is presented. A new class of positive integer-valued distributions with power tails is introduced.
We consider the ratio of two Gauss hypergeometric functions, in which the parameters of the numerator function differ from the respective parameters of the denominator function by integers. We derive explicit integral representations for this ratio based on a formula for its imaginary part. This work extends our recent results by lifting certain restrictions on parameters. The new representations are illustrated with a few examples and an application to products of ratios.
We obtain convergent inverse factorial expansions for the sum $S_n(a,b;c)$ of the first $n$ terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function of unit argument valid for $n\geq 1$. The form of these expansions depends on the location of the parametric excess $s:=c-a-b$ in the complex $s$-plane. The leading behaviour as $n\rightarrow\infty$ agrees with previous results in the literature. The case $a=b=1/2$, $c=1$ corresponds to the Landau contants.
In this paper, we consider the monotonicity of certain combinations of the Gaussian hypergeometric functions $F(a-1,b;a+b;1-x^c)$ and $F(a-1-δ,b+δ;a+b;1-x^d)$ on $(0,1)$ for $δ\in(a-1,0)$, and study the problem of comparing these two functions, thus get the largest value $δ_1=δ_1(a,c,d)$ such that the inequality $F(a-1,b;a+b;1-x^c)<F(a-1-δ,b+δ;a+b;1-x^d)$ holds for all $x\in (0,1)$.
Algebraic hypergeometric functions can be compactly expressed as radical functions on pull-back curves where the monodromy group is simpler, say, a finite cyclic group. These so-called Darboux evaluations were already considered for algebraic 2F1-functions. This article presents Darboux evaluations for the classical case of 3F2-functions with the projective monodromy group PSL(2,F7). As an application, appealing modular evaluations of the same 3F2-functions are derived.
We consider an application of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants to the theory of the sixth Painlevé and Gauss hypergeometric functions: two classical special functions of the isomonodromy type. It is shown that, higher order transformations and the Schwarz table for the Gauss hypergeometric function are closely related with some particular Belyi functions. Moreover, we introduce a notion of deformation of the dessins d'enfants and show that one dimensional deformations are a useful tool for construction of algebraic the sixth Painlevé functions.
We consider the uniform asymptotic expansion for the Gauss hypergeometric function \[{}_2F_1(a+ελ,b;c+λ;x),\qquad 0<x<1\] as $λ\to+\infty$ in the neigbourhood of $εx=1$ when the parameter $ε>1$ and the constants $a$, $b$ and $c$ are supposed finite. Use of a standard integral representation shows that the problem reduces to consideration of a simple saddle point near an endpoint of the integration path. A uniform asymptotic expansion is first obtained by employing Bleistein's method. An alternative form of uniform expansion is derived following the approach described in Olver's book [{\it Asym…
We consider the uniform asymptotic expansion for the Gauss hypergeometric function \[F(a+ελ,m;c+λ;x),\qquad λ\to+\infty\] for $x<1$ and positive integer $m$ when the parameter $ε>1$ and the constants $a$ and $c$ are supposed finite. When $m=1$, we employ the standard procedure of the method of steepest descents modified to deal with the situation when a saddle point is near a simple pole. It is shown that it is possible to give a closed-form expression for the coefficients in the resulting uniform expansion. The expansion when $m\geq 2$ is obtained by means of a recurrence relation. Numerical …
In this brief note, we show how to apply Kummer's and other quadratic transformation formulas for Gauss' and generalized hypergeometric functions in order to obtain transformation and summation formulas for series with harmonic numbers that contain one or two continuous parameters. We also give a generating function of the sequence $\frac{(a)_n (1-a)_n}{(n!)^2}H_n$ as a combination of Gauss hypergeometric function and elementary functions.

Recently, there emerges different versions of beta function and hypergeometric functions containing extra parameters. Gaining enlightenment from these ideas, we will first introduce a new extension of generalized hypergeometric function and then put forward some fundamental results in the paper. Next, we will derive some properties of certain functions like extended Gauss hypergeometric functions, extended Appell's hypergeometric functions $\mathbf{F}_{1}^{(κ_{l})}$, $\mathbf{F}_{2}^{(κ_{l})}$, and extended Lauricella's hypergeometric function $\mathbf{F}_{D,(κ_{l})}^{(r)}$,$\mathbf{F}_{A,(κ_{…
In this paper, the incomplete Pochhammer ratios are defined in terms of the incomplete beta function $B_{y}(x,z)$. With the help of these incomplete Pochhammer ratios, we introduce new incomplete Gauss, confluent hypergeometric and Appell's functions and investigate several properties of them such as integral representations, derivative formulas, transformation formulas, and recurrence relation. Furthermore, an incomplete Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative operators are introduced. This definition helps us to obtain linear and bilinear generating relations for the new incomplete Gauss hyp…
We obtain the asymptotic expansion for the Gauss hypergeometric function \[F(a-λ,b+λ;c+iαλ;z)\] for $λ\rightarrow+\infty$ with $a$, $b$ and $c$ finite parameters by application of the method of steepest descents. The quantity $α$ is real, so that the denominatorial parameter is complex and $z$ is a finite complex variable restricted to lie in the sector $|\arg (1-z)|<π$. We concentrate on the particular case $a=0$, $b=c=1$, which is associated with the Legendre functions of real degree and imaginary order. The resulting expansions are of Poincaré type and hold in restricted domains of the $z$-…
The aim of this note is to provide a new identity connected with the Gauss hypergeometric function. This is achieved using results of certain combinatorial identities and a hypergeometric function approach.
It is shown that Ramanujan's cubic transformation of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1$ arises from a relation between modular curves, namely the covering of $X_0(3)$ by $X_0(9)$. In general, when $2\le N\le 7$ the N-fold cover of $X_0(N)$ by $X_0(N^2)$ gives rise to an algebraic hypergeometric transformation. The N=2,3,4 transformations are arithmetic-geometric mean iterations, but the N=5,6,7 transformations are new. In the final two the change of variables is not parametrized by rational functions, since $X_0(6),X_0(7)$ are of genus 1. Since their quotients $X_0^+(6),X_0^+(7)$ unde…
Our purpose in this present paper is to investigate generalized integration formulas containing the extended generalized hypergeometric function and obtained results are expressed in terms of extended hypergeometric function. Certain special cases of the main results presented here are also pointed out for the extended Gauss' hypergeometric and confluent hypergeometric functions.
Gauss hypergeometric functions with a dihedral monodromy group can be expressed as elementary functions, since their hypergeometric equations can be transformed to Fuchsian equations with cyclic monodromy groups by a quadratic change of the argument variable. The paper presents general elementary expressions of these dihedral hypergeometric functions, involving finite bivariate sums expressible as terminating Appell's F2 or F3 series. Additionally, trigonometric expressions for the dihedral functions are presented, and degenerate cases (logarithmic, or with the monodromy group Z/2Z) are consid…
Identities involving finite sums of products of hypergeometric functions and their duals have been studied since 1930s. Recently Beukers and Jouhet have used an algebraic approach to derive a very general family of duality relations. In this paper we provide an alternative way of obtaining such results. Our method is very simple and it is based on the non-local derangement identity.
In this paper we prove monotonicity of some ratios of $q$--Kummer confluent hypergeometric and $q$--hypergeometric functions. The results are also closely connected with Turán type inequalities. In order to obtain main results we apply methods developed earlier by the authors for the case of classical Kummer and Gauss hypergeometric functions.
In this paper, we aim to obtain a representation of Humbert's hy- pergeometric function in a series of Gauss's function 2F1. A few interesting results have also been deduced as special case of our main findings.
In this paper, a generalization of Ramanujan's cubic transformation, in the form of an inequality, is proved for zero-balanced Gaussian hypergeometric function $F(a,b;a+b;x)$, $a,b>0$.
Algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve equation can be computed using pullback transformations of hypergeometric equations with respect to specially ramified rational coverings. In particular, as was noticed by the second author and Doran, some algebraic solutions can be constructed from a rational covering alone, without computation of the pullbacked Fuchsian equation. But the same covering can be used to pullback different hypergeometric equations, resulting in different algebraic Painleve VI solutions. This paper presents computations of explicit RS-pullback transformations, and derivati…
We consider representations of quadratic $R$-matrix algebras by means of certain first order ordinary differential operators. These operators turn out to act as parameter shifting operators on the Gauss hypergeometric function and its limit cases and on classical orthogonal polynomials. The relationship with W. Miller's treatment of Lie algebras of first order differential operators will be discussed.
The asymptotic expansion of the Kummer function ${}_1F_1(a; b; z)$ is examined as $z\to+\infty$ on the Stokes line $\arg\,z=0$. The correct form of the subdominant algebraic contribution is obtained for non-integer $a$. Numerical results demonstrating the accuracy of the expansion are given.
We describe a solution of the Gauss hypergeometric equation, $F(α,β,γ;z)$ by power series in paramaters $α,β,γ$ whose coefficients are $\Z$ linear combinations of multiple polylogarithms. And using the representation and connection reletions of solutions of the hypergeometric equation, we show some relations of multiple zeta values.
The hypergeometric functions ${}_nF_{n-1}$ are higher transcendental functions, but for certain parameter values they become algebraic, because the monodromy of the defining hypergeometric differential equation becomes finite. It is shown that many algebraic ${}_nF_{n-1}$'s, for which the finite monodromy is irreducible but imprimitive, can be represented as combinations of certain explicitly algebraic functions of a single variable; namely, the roots of trinomials. This generalizes a result of Birkeland, and is derived as a corollary of a family of binomial coefficient identities that is of i…
The paper aims to generalize Clausen's identity to the square of any Gauss hypergeometric function. Accordingly, solutions of the related 3rd order linear differential equation are found in terms of certain bivariate series that can reduce to 3F2 series similar to those in Clausen's identity. The general contiguous variation of Clausen's identity is found. The related Chaundy's identity is generalized without any restriction on the parameters of Gauss hypergeometric function. The special case of dihedral Gauss hypergeometric functions is underscored.
Reduction formulas for sums of products of hypergeometric functions can be traced back to Euler. This topic has an intimate connection to summation and transformation formulas, contiguous relations and algebraic properties of the (generalized) hypergeometric differential equation. Over recent several years, important discoveries have been made in this subject by Gorelov, Ebisu, Beukers and Jouhet and Feng, Kuznetsov and Yang. In this paper, we give a generalization of Feng, Kuznetsov and Yang identity covering also Ebisu's and Gorelov's formulas as particular cases.
We consider the ratio of two Gauss hypergeometric functions with real parameters shifted by arbitrary integers. We find a formula for the jump of this ratio over the branch cut in terms of a real hypergeometric polynomial, the beta density and the absolute value of the Gauss hypergeometric function. This allows us to construct explicit integral representations for such ratio when the asymptotic behaviour at unity is mild and the denominator does not vanish. Multiplying the ratio by the aforementioned polynomial, we obtain a function that belongs to a generalized Nevanlinna class for arbitrary …
The Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(a,b,c;z)$ can be computed by using the power series in powers of $z, z/(z-1), 1-z, 1/z, 1/(1-z),(z-1)/z$. With these expansions ${}_2F_1(a,b,c;z)$ is not completely computable for all complex values of $z$. As pointed out in Gil, {\it et al.} [2007, \S2.3], the points $z=e^{\pm iπ/3}$ are always excluded from the domains of convergence of these expansions. Bühring [1987] has given a power series expansion that allows computation at and near these points. But, when $b-a$ is an integer, the coefficients of that expansion become indeterminate and its com…
This paper studies the log-convexity of the extended beta functions. As a consequence, Turán-type inequalities are established. The monotonicity, log-convexity, log-concavity of extended hypergeometric functions are deduced by using the inequalities on extended beta functions,. The particular cases of those results also gives the Turán-type inequalities for extended confluent and extended Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Some reverse of Turán-type inequalities also derived.
