From the algebraic solution of $x^{n}-x+t=0$ for $n=2,3,4$ and the corresponding solution in terms of hypergeometric functions, we obtain a set of reduction formulas for hypergeometric functions. By differentiation and integration of these results, and applying other known reduction formulas of hypergeometric functions, we derive new reduction formulas of special functions as well as the calculation of some infinite integrals in terms of elementary functions.
Univariate specializations of Appell's hypergeometric functions F1, F2, F3, F4 satisfy ordinary Fuchsian equations of order at most 4. In special cases, these differential equations are of order 2, and could be simple (pullback) transformations of Euler's differential equation for the Gauss hypergeometric function. The paper classifies these cases, and presents corresponding relations between univariate specializations of Appell's functions and univariate hypergeometric functions. The computational aspect and interesting identities are discussed.
The fundamental set of solutions of the generalized hypergeometric differential equation in the neighborhood of unity has been built by Nørlund in 1955. The behavior of the generalized hypergeometric function in the neighborhood of unity has been described in the beginning of 1990s by Bühring, Srivastava and Saigo. In the first part of this paper we review their results rewriting them in terms of Meijer's $G$-function and explaining the interconnections between them. In the second part we present new formulas and identities for the coefficients that appear in the expansions of Meijer's $G$-fun…
The main goal of this paper is to derive a number of identities for the generalized hypergeometric function evaluated at unity and for certain terminating multivariate hypergeometric functions from the symmetries and other properties of Meijer's $G$ function. For instance, we recover two- and three-term Thomae relations for ${}_3F_2$, give two- and three-term transformations for ${}_4F_3$ with one unit shift and ${}_5F_4$ with two unit shifts in the parameters, establish multi-term identities for general ${}_{p}F_{p-1}$ and several transformations for terminating Kampé de Fériet and Srivastava…
We obtain extensions of classical hypergeometric identities of Bailey and Whipple that transform nearly-poised and very-well-poised series to Saalschützian series, Saalschützian series to Saalschützian series, and very-well-poised and nearly-poised series to very-well-poised series. We employ a method in which summations and transformations of lower-order series are used to obtain transformations of higher-order series. By taking limits, we also obtain extensions of two classical quadratic transformations of Whipple and Bailey. Furthermore, we show how a number of other well-known results rega…
There are many identities for the hypergeometric series presented in the article "Special values of the hypergeometric series" by Ebisu. In this note, we obtain a new hypergeometric identity, which includes some of these identities as special cases. We notice that this identity closely relates to a strange evaluation by Gosper. Key Words and Phrases: the hypergeometric series, hypergeometric identity.
This paper describes a method to find a connection between combinatorial identities and hypergeometric series with a number of examples. Combinatorial identities can often be written as hypergeometric series with unit argument. In a number of cases these hypergeometric series are balanced and can be reduced to a simpler form. In this paper some combinatorial identities are proved using this method assuming that the results in the tables of Prudnikov et al. [12] are proven without using hypergeometric functions.
In this work we show that it is possible to calculate the fractional integrals and derivatives of order $α$ (using the Riemann-Liouville formulation) of power functions $\left( t-\ast\right) ^β$ with $β$ being any real value, so long as one pays attention to the proper choosing of the lower and upper limits according to the original function's domain. We, therefore, obtain valid expressions that are described in terms of function series of the type $\left( t-\ast\right) ^{\pmα+k}$ and we also show that they are related to the famous hypergeometric functions of the Mathematical-Physics.
In this note, we aim to provide generalizations of (i) Knuth's old sum (or Reed Dawson identity) and (ii) Riordan's identity using a hypergeometric series approach.
It is well-known that differentiation of hypergeometric function multiplied by a certain power function yields another hypergeometric function with a different set of parameters. Such differentiation identities for hypergeometric functions have been used widely in various fields of applied mathematics and natural sciences. In this expository note, we provide a simple proof of the differentiation identities, which is based only on the definition of the coefficients for the power series expansion of the hypergeometric functions.
A probabilistic approach is provided to establish new hypergeometric identities. It is based on the calculation of moments of the limiting distribution of the position of the elephant random walk in the superdiffusive regime.
In this paper, we present a new method for finding identities for hypergeoemtric series, such as the (Gauss) hypergeometric series, the generalized hypergeometric series and the Appell-Lauricella hypergeometric series. Furthermore, using this method, we get identities for the hypergeometric series $F(a,b;c;x)$; we show that values of $F(a,b;c;x)$ at some points $x$ can be expressed in terms of gamma functions, together with certain elementary functions. We tabulate the values of $F(a,b;c;x)$ that can be obtained with this method. We find that this set includes almost all previously known value…
A special singular limit $ω_1/ω_2\to 1$ is considered for the Faddeev modular quantum dilogarithm (hyperbolic gamma function) and the corresponding hyperbolic integrals. It brings a new class of hypergeometric identities associated with bilateral sums of Mellin-Barnes type integrals of particular Pochhammer symbol products.
The aim of this note is to provide a new identity connected with the Gauss hypergeometric function. This is achieved using results of certain combinatorial identities and a hypergeometric function approach.
A convolution approach leading to an explicit computation of a value of a 4F3 function is outlined. We also investigate about the role of the dilogarithm reflection formula, leading to a remarkable consequence: in some cases, values of 4F3 are given by linear combinations of a squared arctangent and a squared logarithm.
In this paper, we show that the kernel function of Cauchy type for type $BC$ intertwines the commuting family of van Diejen's $q$-difference operators. This result gives rise to a transformation formula for certain multiple basic hypergeometric series of type $BC$. We also construct a new infinite family of commuting $q$-difference operators for which the Koornwinder polynomials are joint eigenfunctions.
Several new identities for elliptic hypergeometric series are proved. Remarkably, some of these are elliptic analogues of identities for basic hypergeometric series that are balanced but not very-well-poised.
The beta integral method proved itself as a simple nonetheless powerful method of generating hypergeometric identities at a fixed argument. In this paper we propose a generalization by substituting the beta density with a particular type of Meijer's G function. By application of our method to known transformation formulas we derive about forty hypergeometric identities, majority of which are believed to be new. We further apply some of these transformations to obtain several new summation formulas.
The aim of this research paper is to demonstrate how one can obtain eleven new and interesting hypergeometric identities (in the form of a single result) from the old ones by mainly applying the well known beta integral method which was used successfully and systematically by Krattenthaler and Rao in their well known, very interesting research papers. The results are derived with the help of generalization of a quadratic transformation formula due to Kummer very recently obtained by Kim, et al. . Several identities including one obtained earlier by Krattenthaler and Rao follow special cases of…
We deduce new q-series identities by applying inverse relations to certain identities for basic hypergeometric series. The identities obtained themselves do not belong to the hierarchy of basic hypergeometric series. We extend two of our identities, by analytic continuation, to bilateral summation formulae which contain Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation and a very-well-poised 4-psi-6 summation as special cases.
In this paper, we will obtain new algebraic transformations of the $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions. The main novelty in our approach is the interpretation of identities among $_2F_1$-hypergeometric functions as identities among automorphic forms on different Shimura curves.
In this note we state (with minor corrections) and give an alternative proof of a very general hypergeometric transformation formula due to Slater. As an application, we obtain a new hypergeometric transformation formula for a ${}_5F_4(-1)$ series with one pair of parameters differing by unity expressed as a linear combination of two ${}_3F_2(1)$ series.
For zero-balanced Gaussian hypergeometric functions $ F(a,b;a+b;x),$ $a,b>0,$ we determine maximal regions of $ab$ plane where well-known Landen identities for the complete elliptic integral of the first kind turn on respective inequalities valid for each $x\in (0,1)$. Thereby an exhausting answer is given to an open problem.
In this article we prove a new elliptic hypergeometric integral identity. It previously appeared (as a conjecture) in articles by Rains, and Spiridonov and Vartanov. Moreover it gives a different proof of an identity in another article by Rains. We also give some basic hypergeometric and classical limits of this identity. The classical limit gives identities (some known, some new) between generalizations of the Selberg integral.
We review the series solutions of the general and single-confluent Heun equations in terms of powers, ordinary-hypergeometric and confluent-hypergeometric functions. The conditions under which the expansions reduce to finite sums as well as the cases when the coefficients of power-series expansions obey two-term recurrence relations are discussed. Infinitely many cases for which a solution of a general or single-confluent Heun equation is written through a single generalized hypergeometric function are indicated. It is shown that the parameters of this generalized hypergeometric function are t…
We derive formulas for the construction of all inequivalent Jacobian elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves from extremal rational elliptic surfaces by rational base transformations and quadratic twists. We then show that each such decomposition yields a description of the Picard-Fuchs system satisfied by the periods of the holomorphic two-form as either a tensor product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations, an Appell hypergeometric system, or a GKZ differential system. As the answer must be independent of the fibration used, identities r…
In this article we present a method to implement orthogonal polynomials and many other special functions in Computer Algebra systems enabling the user to work with those functions appropriately, and in particular to verify different types of identities for those functions. Some of these identities like differential equations, power series representations, and hypergeometric representations can even dealt with algorithmically, i.\ e.\ they can be computed by the Computer Algebra system, rather than only verified. The types of functions that can be treated by the given technique cover the genera…
Identities involving finite sums of products of hypergeometric functions and their duals have been studied since 1930s. Recently Beukers and Jouhet have used an algebraic approach to derive a very general family of duality relations. In this paper we provide an alternative way of obtaining such results. Our method is very simple and it is based on the non-local derangement identity.
This paper argues that automated proofs of identities for non-terminating hypergeometric series are feasible by a combination of Zeilberger's algorithm and asymptotic estimates. For two analogues of Saalschütz' summation formula in the non-terminating case this is illustrated.
The indefinite integral $$ \int x^αe^{ηx^β}\,_pF_q (a_1, a_2, \cdot\cdot\cdot a_p; b_1, b_2, \cdot\cdot\cdot, b_q; λx^γ)dx, $$ where $α, η, β, λ, γ\ne0$ are real or complex constants and $_pF_q$ is the generalized hypergeometric function, is evaluated in terms of an infinite series involving the generalized hypergeometric function. Related integrals in which the exponential function $e^{ηx^β}$ is either replaced by the hyperbolic function $\cosh\left(ηx^β\right)$ or $\sinh\left(ηx^β\right)$, or the sinusoidal function $\cos\left(ηx^β\right)$ or $\sin\left(ηx^β\right)$, are also evaluated in te…
We give elementary derivations of several classical and some new summation and transformation formulae for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. For purpose of motivation, we review our previous simple proof ("A simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation", Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear) of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Using a similar but different method, we now give elementary derivations of some transformations for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. In particular, these include M. Jackson's very-well-poised 8-psi-8 transformation, a very-well-poised …
It is shown that the classical quadratic and cubic transformation identities satisfied by the hypergeometric function ${}_3F_2$ can be extended to include additional parameter pairs, which differ by integers. In the extended identities, which involve hypergeometric functions of arbitrarily high order, the added parameters are nonlinearly constrained: in the quadratic case, they are the negated roots of certain orthogonal polynomials of a discrete argument (dual Hahn and Racah ones). Specializations and applications of the extended identities are given, including an extension of Whipple's ident…
The main object of this work is to show how some rather elementary techniques based upon certain inverse pairs of symbolic operators would lead us easily to several decomposition formulas associated with confluent hypergeometric functions of two and more variables. Many operator identities involving these pairs of symbolic operators are first constructed for this purpose. By means of these operator identities several decomposition formulas are found, which express the aforementioned hypergeometric functions in terms of such simpler functions as the products of the Gauss hypergeometric function…
Identities between Whittaker and modified Bessel functions are derived for particular complex orders. Certain polynomials appear in such identities, which satisfy a fourth order differential equation (not of hypergeometric type), and they themselves can be expressed as particular linear combinations of products of modified Bessel and confluent hypergeometric functions.
After reviewing some fundamental facts from the theory of theta hypergeometric series we derive, using indefinite summation, several summation, transformation, and expansion formulas for multibasic theta hypergeometric series. Some of the identities presented here generalize corresponding formulas given in Chapter 11 of the Gasper and Rahman book [Basic hypergeometric series, 2nd ed., Encyclopedia of Mathematics And Its Applications 96, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2004].
Zagier introduced the term "strange identity" to describe an asymptotic relation between a certain $q$-hypergeometric series and a partial theta function at roots of unity. We show that behind Zagier's strange identity lies a statement about Bailey pairs. Using the iterative machinery of Bailey pairs then leads to many families of multisum strange identities, including Hikami's generalization of Zagier's identity.
We prove a master theorem for hypergeometric functions of Karlsson-Minton type, stating that a very general multilateral U(n) Karlsson-Minton type hypergeometric series may be reduced to a finite sum. This identity contains the Karlsson-Minton summation formula and many of its known generalizations as special cases, and it also implies several "Bailey-type" identities for U(n) hypergeometric series, including multivariable 10-W-9 transformations of Milne and Newcomb and of Kajihara. Even in the one-variable case our identity is new, and even in this case its proof depends on the theory of mult…
We give several expansion and identities involving the Ramanujan function $A_q$ and the Stieltjes--Wigert polynomials. Special values of our idenitities give $m$-versions of some of the items on the Slater list of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. We also study some bilateral extensions of certain transformations in the theory of basic hypergeometric functions.

Recently, Feng, Kuznetsov and Yang discovered a very general reduction formula for a sum of products of the generalized hypergeometric functions (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 443(2016), 116--122). The main goal of this note is to present a generalization of a particular case of their identity when the generalized hypergeometric function is reduced to the Kummer function 1F1. Our generalized formula contains an additional integer shift in the bottom parameter of the Kummer function. The key ingredient of the proof is a summation formula for the Clausen series 3F2(1) with two integral parameter differen…
The main aim of the present work is to give some interesting the $q$-analogues of various $q$-recurrence relations, $q$-recursion formulas, $q$-partial derivative relations, $q$-integral representations, transformation and summation formulas for bibasic Humbert hypergeometric functions $Ψ_{1}$ and $Ψ_{2}$ on two independent bases $q$ and $p$ of two variables and some developments formulae, believed to be new, by using the conception of $q$-calculus. Finally, some interesting special cases and straightforward identities connected with bibasic Humbert hypergeometric series of the types $Ψ_{1}$ a…
The celebrated Zeilberger algorithm which finds holonomic recurrence equations for definite sums of hypergeometric terms $F(n,k)$ is extended to certain nonhypergeometric terms. An expression $F(n,k)$ is called a hypergeometric term if both $F(n+1,k)/F(n,k)$ and $F(n,k+1)/F(n,k)$ are rational functions. Typical examples are ratios of products of exponentials, factorials, $Γ$ function terms, bin omial coefficients, and Pochhammer symbols that are integer-linear with respect to $n$ and $k$ in their arguments. We consider the more general case of ratios of products of exponentials, factorials, $Γ…
Based on Spiridonov's analysis of elliptic generalizations of the Gauss hypergeometric function, we develop a common framework for 7-parameter families of generalized elliptic, hyperbolic and trigonometric univariate hypergeometric functions. In each case we derive the symmetries of the generalized hypergeometric function under the Weyl group of type E_7 (elliptic, hyperbolic) and of type E_6 (trigonometric) using the appropriate versions of the Nassrallah-Rahman beta integral, and we derive contiguous relations using fundamental addition formulas for theta and sine functions. The top level de…
Eric Rains conjectured several quadratic transformations between multivariate elliptic hypergeometric functions in "Elliptic Littlewood Identities", with the integrand multiplied by interpolation functions. In this article two of these conjectures are proven in the case where the interpolation functions are constant, and we obtain a third conjecture as a corollary. Two other equations for elliptic Selberg integrals with 10 parameters, two of which multiplying to pq/t, are given, as they are needed in the proof. The proofs consist essentially of a calculation which strings together many ellipti…
In 2010, Kh. Hessami Pilehrood and T. Hessami Pilehrood introduced generating function identities used to obtain series accelerations for values of Dirichlet's $β$ function, via the Markov--Wilf--Zeilberger method. Inspired by these past results, together with related results introduced by Chu et al., we introduce a variety of hypergeometric recurrences. We prove these recurrences using the WZ method, and we apply these recurrences to obtain series acceleration identities. We introduce a family of summations generalizing a Ramanujan-type series for $\frac{1}{π^2}$ due to Guillera, and a family…
In this article we developed a special topic of our pure-mathematics papers concerning the hypergeometric theory. Based upon a Roberts's reduction approach of hyperelliptic integrals to elliptic ones and on the simultaneous multivariable hypergeometric series evaluation of them, several identities have been obtained expressing $π$ in terms of special values of elliptic, hypergeometric and Gamma functions. By them $π$ can be provided through either only one or two parameters and through the imaginary unit. In any case, such results, all unpublished and undoubtably new, will provide, beyond thei…
We derive a number of summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series on the root systems A_n, C_n and D_n. In the special cases of classical and q-series, our approach leads to new elementary proofs of the corresponding identities.
In this paper, we study the solutions of the system of bilateral type matrix differential equations and presented these solutions in terms of Lauricella hypergeometric matrix functions of several variables and Srivastava's triple hypergeometric matrix functions of three variables. We also discuss the region of convergence and integral representation for these matrix functions.
The usefulness of Riemann P-symbols in deriving identities involving the parametrized special function Hl is explored. Hl is the analytic local solution of the Heun equation, the canonical second-order differential equation on the Riemann sphere with four regular singular points. The identities discussed include ones coming from Moebius automorphisms and F-homotopies, and also quadratic and biquadratic transformations. The case when Hl is identical to a generalized hypergeometric function of 3F2 type is examined, and Pfaff and Euler transformations of 3F2(a1,a2,e+1;b1,e;x) are derived. They ex…
We record $$ \binom{42}2+\binom{23}2+\binom{13}2=1192 $$ functional identities that, apart from being amazingly amusing by themselves, find applications in derivation of Ramanujan-type formulas for $1/π$ and in computation of mathematical constants.
We establish some identities in law for the convolution of a beta prime distribution with itself, involving the square root of beta distributions. The proof of these identities relies on transformations on generalized hypergeometric series obtained via Appell series of the first kind and Thomae's relationships for ${}_3F_2(1)$. Using a self-decomposability argument, the identities are applied to derive complete monotonicity properties for quotients of confluent hypergeometric functions having a doubling character. By means of probability, we also obtain a simple proof of Turán's inequality for…
The method of rational function certification for proving terminating hypergeometric identities is extended from single sums or integrals to multi-integral/sums and ``$q$'' integral/sums.
We outline an elementary method for proving numerical hypergeometric identities, in particular, Ramanujan-type identities for $1/π$. The principal idea is using algebraic transformations of arithmetic hypergeometric series to translate non-singular points into singular ones, where the required constants can be computed using asymptotic analysis.
