We derive a number of summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series on the root systems A_n, C_n and D_n. In the special cases of classical and q-series, our approach leads to new elementary proofs of the corresponding identities.
We introduce a generalization of elliptic 6j-symbols, which can be interpreted as matrix elements for intertwiners between corepresentations of Felder's elliptic quantum group. For special parameter values, they can be expressed in terms of multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series related to the root system A_n. As a consequence, we obtain new biorthogonality relations for such series.
Recently, Kajihara gave a Bailey-type transformation relating basic hypergeometric series on the root system An, with different dimensions n. We give, with a new, elementary, proof, an elliptic analogue of this transformation. We also obtain further Bailey-type transformations as consequences of our result, some of which are new also in the case of basic and classical hypergeometric series.
A multiple generalization of elliptic hypergeometric series is investigated and a duality transformation for multiple hypergeometric series is proposed. Our duality transformation obtained from an identity arising from the Cauchy determinant formula for Weierstrass sigma functions, by spcialization of a particular form.
We construct a family of continuous biorthogonal functions related to an elliptic analogue of the Gauss hypergeometric function. The key tools used for that are the elliptic beta integral and the integral Bailey chain introduced earlier by the author. Relations to the Sklyanin algebra and elliptic analogues of the Faddeev modular double are discussed in detail.
We give an overview of some of the main results from the theories of hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems. In particular, we list a number of summations, transformations and explicit evaluations for such multiple series and integrals. We concentrate on such results which do not directly extend to the elliptic level. This text is a provisional version of a chapter on hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems for volume 2 of the new Askey--Bateman project which deals with "Multivariable special f…
Using Krattenthaler's operator method, we give a new proof of Warnaar's recent elliptic extension of Krattenthaler's matrix inversion. Further, using a theta function identity closely related to Warnaar's inversion, we derive summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series of Karlsson-Minton-type. A special case yields a particular summation that was used by Warnaar to derive quadratic, cubic and quartic transformations for elliptic hypergeometric series. Starting from another theta function identity, we derive yet different summation and transformation formulas for el…
We use elliptic Taylor series expansions and interpolation to deduce a number of summations for elliptic hypergeometric series. We extend to the well-poised elliptic case results that in the $q$-case have previously been obtained by Cooper and by Ismail and Stanton. We also provide identities involving S. Bhargava's cubic theta functions.
Multidimensional matrix inversions provide a powerful tool for studying multiple hypergeometric series. In order to extend this technique to elliptic hypergeometric series, we present three new multidimensional matrix inversions. As applications, we obtain a new $A_r$ elliptic Jackson summation, as well as several quadratic, cubic and quartic summation formulas.
We start from an interpretation of the $BC_2$-symmetric "Type I" (elliptic Dixon) elliptic hypergeometric integral evaluation as a formula for a Casoratian of the elliptic hypergeometric equation, and give an extension to higher-dimensional integrals and higher-order hypergeometric functions. This allows us to prove the corresponding elliptic beta integral and transformation formula in a new way, by proving both sides satisfy the same difference equations, and that the difference equations satisfy a Galois-theoretical condition that ensures uniqueness of simultaneous solution.
The paper classifies algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions with the local exponent differences $(1/2,1/4,1/4)$, $(1/2,1/3,1/6)$ and $(1/3,1/3,1/3)$. These form a special class of algebraic transformations of Gauss hypergeometric functions, of arbitrary high degree. The Gauss hypergeometric functions can be identified as elliptic integrals on the genus 1 curves $y=x^3-x$ or $y=x^3-1$. Especially interesting are algebraic transformations of the hypergeometric functions into themselves; these transformations come from isogenies of the respective elliptic curves.
New duality transformation formulas are proposed for multiple elliptic hypergeometric series of type $BC$ and of type $C$. Various transformation and summation formulas are derived as special cases to recover some previously known results.
We express explicitly the Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric function for the root system of type A with a certain degenerate parameter in terms of the Lauricella hypergeometric function.
We prove a reduction formula for Karlsson-Minton type hypergeometric series on the root system C_n and derive some consequences of this identity. In particular, when combined with a similar reduction formula for A_n, it implies a C_n Watson transformation due to Milne and Lilly.
We describe a uniform way of obtaining basic hypergeometric functions as limits of the elliptic beta integral. This description gives rise to the construction of a polytope with a different basic hypergeometric function attached to each face of this polytope. We can subsequently obtain various relations, such as transformations and three-term relations, of these functions by considering geometrical properties of this polytope. The most general functions we describe in this way are sums of two very-well-poised ${}_{10}ϕ_9$'s and their Nassrallah-Rahman type integral representation.
It is shown how to define difference equations on particular lattices $\{x_n\}$, $n\in\mathbb{Z}$, made of values of an elliptic function at a sequence of arguments in arithmetic progression (elliptic lattice). Solutions to special difference equations have remarkable simple interpolatory expansions. Only linear difference equations of first order are considered here.
Several new identities for elliptic hypergeometric series are proved. Remarkably, some of these are elliptic analogues of identities for basic hypergeometric series that are balanced but not very-well-poised.
In this article we prove a new elliptic hypergeometric integral identity. It previously appeared (as a conjecture) in articles by Rains, and Spiridonov and Vartanov. Moreover it gives a different proof of an identity in another article by Rains. We also give some basic hypergeometric and classical limits of this identity. The classical limit gives identities (some known, some new) between generalizations of the Selberg integral.
General structure of the multivariate plain and q-hypergeometric terms and univariate elliptic hypergeometric terms is described. Some explicit examples of the totally elliptic hypergeometric terms leading to multidimensional integrals on root systems, either computable or obeying non-trivial symmetry transformations, are presented.
In this article we give a new transformation between elliptic hypergeometric beta integrals, which gives rise to a Weyl group symmetry of type F_4. The transformation is a generalization of a series transformation discovered by Langer, Schlosser, and Warnaar. Moreover we consider various limits of this transformation to basic hypergeometric functions obtained by letting p tend to 0.
In math.QA/0309252, the author proved a number of multivariate elliptic hypergeometric integrals. The purpose of the present note is to explore more carefully the various limiting cases (hyperbolic, trigonometric, rational, and classical) that exist. In particular, we show (using some new estimates of generalized gamma functions) that the hyperbolic integrals (previously treated as purely formal limits) are indeed limiting cases. We also obtain a number of new trigonometric (q-hypergeometric) integral identities as limits from the elliptic level.
Using multiple q-integrals and a determinant evaluation, we establish a multivariable extension of Bailey's nonterminating 10-phi-9 transformation. From this result, we deduce new multivariable terminating 10-phi-9 transformations, 8-phi-7 summations and other identities. We also use similar methods to derive new multivariable 1-psi-1 summations. Some of our results are extended to the case of elliptic hypergeometric series.
As a contribution to the Ramanujan theory of elliptic functions to alternative bases, Li-Chien Shen has shown how analogues of the Jacobian elliptic functions may be derived from incomplete hypergeometric integrals in signatures three and four. We determine precisely the signatures in which the Jacobian analogues or their squares are indeed elliptic.
We consider the Euler type integral associated to the configuration space of points on an elliptic curve, which is an analogue of the hypergeometric function associated to the configuration space of points on a projective line. We calculate the {\it twisted homology group}, with coefficients in the local system associated to a power function $g^α$ of an elliptic function $g$, and the intersection form. Applying these calculations, we describe the {\it connection matrices} representing the linear isomorphisms induced from analytic continuations of the functions defined by the integrations of $g…
General elliptic hypergeometric functions are defined by elliptic hypergeometric integrals. They comprise the elliptic beta integral, elliptic analogues of the Euler-Gauss hypergeometric function and Selberg integral, as well as elliptic extensions of many other plain hypergeometric and $q$-hypergeometric constructions. In particular, the Bailey chain technique, used for proving Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, has been generalized to integrals. At the elliptic level it yields a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation as an integral operator with an elliptic hypergeometric kernel. We give a brie…
In this article, we conjecture exact estimates for the Weyl-invariant Opdam-Cherednik hypergeometric functions. We prove the conjecture for the root system $A_n$ and for all rank 1 cases. We provide other evidence that the conjecture might be true in general.
In this article we continue the work from arXiv:0902.0621. In that article Eric Rains and the present author considered the limits of the elliptic beta integral as p->0 while the parameters t_r have a p-dependence of the form t_r=u_rp^{α_r} (for fixed u_r and certain real numbers α_r). In this article we again consider such limits, but now we let p->0 along a geometric sequence p=xq^{sk} (for some integer s, while k -> \infty), and only allow α_r\in 2/s Z. These choices allow us to take many more limits. In particular we now also obtain bilateral basic hypergeometric series as possible limits,…
Eric Rains conjectured several quadratic transformations between multivariate elliptic hypergeometric functions in "Elliptic Littlewood Identities", with the integrand multiplied by interpolation functions. In this article two of these conjectures are proven in the case where the interpolation functions are constant, and we obtain a third conjecture as a corollary. Two other equations for elliptic Selberg integrals with 10 parameters, two of which multiplying to pq/t, are given, as they are needed in the proof. The proofs consist essentially of a calculation which strings together many ellipti…
We give a brief review of the main results of the theory of elliptic hypergeometric functions -- a new class of special functions of mathematical physics. We prove the most general univariate exact integration formula generalizing Euler's beta integral, which is called the elliptic beta integral. An elliptic analogue of the Gauss hypergeometric function is constructed together with the elliptic hypergeometric equation for it. Biorthogonality relations for this function and its particular subcases are described. We list known elliptic beta integrals on root systems and consider symmetry transfo…
The purpose of this article is to bring structure to (basic) hypergeometric biorthogonal systems, in particular to the q-Askey scheme of basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. We aim to achieve this by looking at the limits as p->0 of the elliptic hypergeometric biorthogonal functions from Spiridonov, with parameters which depend in varying ways on p. As a result we get 38 systems of biorthogonal functions with for each system at least one explicit measure for the bilinear form. Amongst these we indeed recover the q-Askey scheme. Each system consists of (basic hypergeometric) rational fu…
Two exact evaluation formulae for multiple rarefied elliptic beta integrals related to the simplest lens space are proved. They generalize evaluations of the type I and II elliptic beta integrals attached to the root system $C_n$. In a special $n=1$ case, the simplest $p\to 0$ limit is shown to lead to a new class of $q$-hypergeometric identities. Symmetries of a rarefied elliptic analogue of the Euler-Gauss hypergeometric function are described and the respective generalization of the hypergeometric equation is constructed. Some extensions of the latter function to $C_n$ and $A_n$ root system…
This is a brief overview of the status of the theory of elliptic hypergeometric functions to the end of 2012 written as a complementary chapter to the Russian edition of the book by G.E. Andrews, R. Askey, and R. Roy, Special Functions, Encycl. of Math. Appl. 71, Cambridge Univ. Press, 1999.
Ramanujan's Master theorem states that, under suitable conditions, the Mellin transform of an alternating power series provides an interpolation formula for the coefficients of this series. Ramanujan applied this theorem to compute several definite integrals and power series, which explains why it is referred to as the "Master Theorem". In this paper we prove an analogue of Ramanujan's Master theorem for the hypergeometric Fourier transform on root systems. This theorem generalizes to arbitrary positive multiplicity functions the results previously proven by the same authors for the spherical …
We construct a family of second-order linear difference equations parametrized by the hypergeometric solution of the elliptic Painlevé equation (or higher-order analogues), and admitting a large family of monodromy-preserving deformations. The solutions are certain semiclassical biorthogonal functions (and their Cauchy transforms), biorthogonal with respect to higher-order analogues of Spiridonov's elliptic beta integral.
We give a new theta-function identity, a special case of which is utilised to prove Kawanaka's Macdonald polynomial conjecture. The theta-function identity further yields a transformation formula for multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series which appears to be new even in the one-variable, basic case.
Using the technique of the elliptic Frobenius determinant, we construct new elliptic solutions of the $QD$-algorithm. These solutions can be interpreted as elliptic solutions of the discrete-time Toda chain as well. As a by-product, we obtain new explicit orthogonal and biorthogonal polynomials in terms of the elliptic hypergeometric function ${_3}E_2(z)$. Their recurrence coefficients are expressed in terms of the elliptic functions. In the degenerate case we obtain the Krall-Jacobi polynomials and their biorthogonal analogs.
We extend expansion formulas of Liu given in 2013 to the context of multiple series over root systems. Liu and others have shown the usefulness of these formulas in Special Functions and number-theoretic contexts. We extend Wang and Ma's generalizations of Liu's work which they obtained using $q$-Lagrange inversion. We use the $A_n$ and $C_n$ Bailey transformation and other summation theorems due to Gustafson, Milne, Milne and Lilly, and others, from the theory of $A_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ basic hypergeometric series.
In these lecture notes I give an elementary introduction to elliptic hypergeometric functions. I focus on motivating the main ideas and constructions, rather than giving a comprehensive survey. The lectures include a brief explanation of the historical origin of elliptic hypergeometric functions in the context of solvable lattice models. In particular, I give a new proof of the fact that fused Boltzmann weights for the elliptic solid-on-solid model can be expressed as elliptic hypergeometric sums.
General theory of elliptic hypergeometric series and integrals is outlined. Main attention is paid to the examples obeying properties of the "classical" special functions. In particular, an elliptic analogue of the Gauss hypergeometric function and some of its properties are described. Present review is based on author's habilitation thesis [Spi7] containing a more detailed account of the subject.
We formulate general principles of building hypergeometric type series from the Jacobi theta functions that generalize the plain and basic hypergeometric series. Single and multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series are considered in detail. A characterization theorem for a single variable totally elliptic hypergeometric series is proved.
We give a brief account of the key properties of elliptic hypergeometric integrals -- a relatively recently discovered top class of transcendental special functions of hypergeometric type. In particular, we describe an elliptic generalization of Euler's and Selberg's beta integrals, elliptic analogue of the Euler-Gauss hypergeometric function and some multivariable elliptic hypergeometric functions on root systems. The elliptic Fourier transformation and corresponding integral Bailey lemma technique is outlined together with a connection to the star-triangle relation and Coxeter relations for …
We prove a multivariable elliptic extension of Jackson's summation formula conjectured by Spiridonov. The trigonometric limit case of this result is due to Gustafson and Rakha. As applications, we obtain two further multivariable elliptic Jackson summations and two multivariable elliptic Bailey transformations. The latter four results are all new even in the trigonometric case.
A series expansion for Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions $φ_λ$ is obtained for all $λ\in \mathfrak a^*_{\mathbb C}.$ As a consequence, estimates for $φ_λ$ away from the walls of a Weyl chamber are established. We also characterize the bounded hypergeometric functions and thus prove an analogue of the celebrated theorem of Helgason and Johnson on the bounded spherical functions on a Riemannian symmetric space of the noncompact type. The $L^p$-theory for the hypergeometric Fourier transform is developed for $0<p<2$. In particular, an inversion formula is proved when $1\leq p <2$.
We show that the complex hypergeometric function describing $6j$-symbols for $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ group is a special degeneration of the $V$-function -- an elliptic analogue of the Euler-Gauss $_2F_1$ hypergeometric function. For this function, we derive mixed difference-recurrence relations as limiting forms of the elliptic hypergeometric equation and some symmetry transformations. At the intermediate steps of computations, there emerge a function describing the $6j$-symbols for the Faddeev modular double and the corresponding difference equations and symmetry transformations.
In this article we extend the results of our article "Limits of elliptic hypergeometric biorthogonal functions" to the multivariate setting. In that article we determined which families of biorthogonal functions arise as limits from the elliptic hypergeometric biorthogonal functions from Spiridonov when p->0. Here we show that the classification of the possible limits of the BC_n type multivariate biorthogonal functions previously introduced by the second author is identical to the univariate classification. That is, for each univariate limit family there exists a multivariate extension, and i…
In recent work (math.QA/0309252) on multivariate hypergeometric integrals, the author generalized a conjectural integral formula of van Diejen and Spiridonov to a ten parameter integral provably invariant under an action of the Weyl group E_7. In the present note, we consider the action of the affine Weyl group, or more precisely, the recurrences satisfied by special cases of the integral. These are of two flavors: linear recurrences that hold only up to dimension 6, and three families of bilinear recurrences that hold in arbitrary dimension, subject to a condition on the parameters. As a coro…
Based on Spiridonov's analysis of elliptic generalizations of the Gauss hypergeometric function, we develop a common framework for 7-parameter families of generalized elliptic, hyperbolic and trigonometric univariate hypergeometric functions. In each case we derive the symmetries of the generalized hypergeometric function under the Weyl group of type E_7 (elliptic, hyperbolic) and of type E_6 (trigonometric) using the appropriate versions of the Nassrallah-Rahman beta integral, and we derive contiguous relations using fundamental addition formulas for theta and sine functions. The top level de…

The authors establish the necessary and sufficient conditions under which certain combinations of Gaussian hypergeometric function and elementary function are monotone in the parameter, which generalize the recent results of generalized elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds obtained by Qiu et al. Moreover, the authors also prove two monotonicity theorems of generalized elliptic integrals from another point of view.
We give a survey of elliptic hypergeometric functions associated with root systems, comprised of three main parts. The first two form in essence an annotated table of the main evaluation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric integeral and series on root systems. The third and final part gives an introduction to Rains' elliptic Macdonald-Koornwinder theory (in part also developed by Coskun and Gustafson).
We prove a pair of transformation formulas for multivariate elliptic hypergeometric sum/integrals associated to the $A_n$ and $BC_n$ root systems, generalising the formulas previously obtained by Rains. The sum/integrals are expressed in terms of the lens elliptic gamma function, a generalisation of the elliptic gamma function that depends on an additional integer variable, as well as a complex variable and two elliptic nomes. As an application of our results, we prove an equality between $S^1\times S^3/\mathbb{Z}_r$ supersymmetric indices, for a pair of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supers…
We derive formulas for the construction of all inequivalent Jacobian elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves from extremal rational elliptic surfaces by rational base transformations and quadratic twists. We then show that each such decomposition yields a description of the Picard-Fuchs system satisfied by the periods of the holomorphic two-form as either a tensor product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations, an Appell hypergeometric system, or a GKZ differential system. As the answer must be independent of the fibration used, identities r…
General reduction of the elliptic hypergeometric equation to the level of complex hypergeometric functions is described. The derived equation is generalized to the Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem for new rational integrable $N$-body systems emerging from particular degenerations of the elliptic Ruijsenaars and van Diejen models.
We evaluate the determinant of a matrix whose entries are elliptic hypergeometric terms and whose form is reminiscent of Sylvester matrices. A hypergeometric determinant evaluation of a matrix of this type has appeared in the context of approximation theory, in the work of Feng, Krattenthaler and Xu. Our determinant evaluation is an elliptic extension of their evaluation, which has two additional parameters (in addition to the base $q$ and nome $p$ found in elliptic hypergeometric terms). We also extend the evaluation to a formula transforming an elliptic determinant into a multiple of another…
