After reviewing some fundamental facts from the theory of theta hypergeometric series we derive, using indefinite summation, several summation, transformation, and expansion formulas for multibasic theta hypergeometric series. We give a new theta-function identity, a special case of which is utilised to prove Kawanaka's Macdonald polynomial conjecture. The theta-function identity further yields a transformation formula for multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series which appears to be new even in the one-variable, basic case.

We give an analogy of Jacobi's formula, which relates the hypergeometric function with parameters $(1/4,1/4,1)$ and theta constants. By using this analogy and twice formulas of theta constants, we obtain a transformation formula for this hypergeometric function. Following a previous article we continue our study on non-terminating hypergeometric series with one free parameter, which aims to find arithmetical constraints for a given hypergeometric series to admit a gamma product formula. The 15 Gauss contiguous relations for ${}_2F_1$ hypergeometric series imply that any three ${}_2F_1$ series whose corresponding parameters differ by integers are linearly related (over the field of rational functions in the parameters). We prove several properties of coefficients of these general contiguous relations, and use the results to propose effective ways to compute contiguous relations. We also discuss contiguous relations of generalized and basic hypergeometric functions, and several applications of them.
