The purpose of this note is to suggest an analogue for genus 2 curves of part of Gross and Zagier's work on elliptic curves. Experimentally, for genus 2 curves with CM by a quartic CM field K, it appears that primes dividing the denominators of the discriminants of the Igusa class polynomials all have the property 1) that they are bounded by d, the absolute value of the discriminant of K, and 2) that they divide d-x^2, for some integer x whose square is less than d. A slightly stronger condition is given in Section 3. Such primes are primes of bad reduction for the genus 2 curve and primes of supersingular reduction for the Jacobian of the genus 2 curve.
In this paper we prove an explicit formula for the arithmetic intersection number (CM(K).G1)_{\ell} on the Siegel moduli space of abelian surfaces, generalizing the work of Bruinier-Yang and Yang. These intersection numbers allow one to compute the denominators of Igusa class polynomials, which has important applications to the construction of genus 2 curves for use in cryptography. Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for intersection numbers on an arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, and as a consequence obtained a conjectural formula for the intersection number (CM(K).G1)_{\ell} under str…
Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for intersection numbers on an arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, and as a consequence obtained a conjectural formula for CM(K).G_1 under strong assumptions on the ramification in K. Yang later proved this conjecture under slightly stronger assumptions on the ramification. In recent work, Lauter and Viray proved a different formula for CM(K).G_1 for primitive quartic CM fields with a mild assumption, using a method of proof independent from that of Yang. In this paper we show that these two formulas agree, for a class of primitive quartic CM fields whic…
Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for an intersection number on the arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, CM(K).T_m, where CM(K) is the zero-cycle of points corresponding to abelian surfaces with CM by a primitive quartic CM field K, and T_m is the Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors parameterizing products of elliptic curves with an m-isogeny between them. In this paper, we examine fields not covered by Yang's proof of the conjecture. We give numerical evidence to support the conjecture and point to some interesting anomalies. We compare the conjecture to both the denominators of Igusa class polyn…
Genus 2 curves are useful in cryptography for both discrete-log based and pairing-based systems, but a method is required to compute genus 2 curves such that the Jacobian has a given number of points. Currently, all known methods involve constructing genus 2 curves with complex multiplication via computing their three Igusa class polynomials. These polynomials have rational coefficients and require extensive computation and precision to compute. Both the computation and the complexity analysis of these algorithms can be improved by a more precise understanding of the denominators of the coeffi…
We bound the running time of an algorithm that computes the genus-two class polynomials of a primitive quartic CM-field K. This is in fact the first running time bound and even the first proof of correctness of any algorithm that computes these polynomials. Essential to bounding the running time is our bound on the height of the polynomials, which is a combination of denominator bounds of Goren and Lauter and our own absolute value bounds. The absolute value bounds are obtained by combining Dupont's estimates of theta constants with an analysis of the shape of CM period lattices. The algorithm…
For p prime, we give an explicit formula for Igusa's local zeta function associated to a polynomial mapping f=(f_1,...,f_t): Q_p^n -> Q_p^t, with f_1,...,f_t in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n], and an integration measure on Z_p^n of the form |g(x)||dx|, with g another polynomial in Z_p[x_1,...,x_n]. We treat the special cases of a single polynomial and a monomial ideal separately. The formula is in terms of Newton polyhedra and will be valid for f and g sufficiently non-degenerated over F_p with respect to their Newton polyhedra. The formula is based on, and is a generalization of results of Denef - Hoornaer…
We show that, for any fixed $\varepsilon > 0$ and almost all primes $p$, the $g$-ary expansion of any fraction $m/p$ with $\gcd(m,p) = 1$ contains almost all $g$-ary strings of length $k < (5/24 - \varepsilon) \log_g p$. This complements a result of J. Bourgain, S. V. Konyagin, and I. E. Shparlinski that asserts that, for almost all primes, all $g$-ary strings of length $k < (41/504 -\varepsilon) \log_g p$ occur in the $g$-ary expansion of $m/p$.
Given a positive integer $n$ we let $A_k(n)$ be the number of positive integers $a$ such that $\frac{a}{n}=\frac{1}{m_1}+\frac{1}{m_2}+\cdots+\frac{1}{m_k}$ for some $m_1,m_2,\ldots,m_k\in {\mathbb N}$. We show that $x(\log x)^3\ll \sum_{p\le x} A_3(p)\ll x(\log x)^5$ as $x\rightarrow\infty$.
We study the question of when the coefficients of a hypergeometric series are p-adically unbounded for a given rational prime p. Our first main result is a necessary and sufficient criterion (applicable to all but finitely many primes) for determining when the coefficients of a hypergeometric series with rational parameters are p-adically unbounded. This criterion is then used to show that the set of unbounded primes for a given series is, up to a finite discrepancy, a finite union of primes in arithmetic progressions. This set can be computed explicitly. We characterize when the density of th…
In this paper we present a polynomial time algorithm to compute the local zeta function Z(s,f) attached to a polynomial f(x) in Z[x] (in one variable, with splitting field Q) and a prime p. The algorithm reduces in polynomial time the computation of Z(s,f) to the computation of a factorization of f(x) over Q. This reduction is accomplished by constructing a weighted tree from the p-adic expansion of the roots of f(x) modulo a certain power of p, and then associating a generating function to this tree. The generating function constructed in this way coincides with the local zeta function of f(x…
For a positive integer $n$ let $\mathfrak{P}_n=\prod_{s_p(n)\ge p} p,$ where $p$ runs over all primes and $s_p(n)$ is the sum of the base $p$ digits of $n$. For all $n$ we prove that $\mathfrak{P}_n$ is divisible by all "small" primes with at most one exception. We also show that $\mathfrak{P}_n$ is large, has many prime factors exceeding $\sqrt{n}$, with the largest one exceeding $n^{20/37}$. We establish Kellner's conjecture, which says that the number of prime factors exceeding $\sqrt{n}$ grows asymptotically as $κ\sqrt{n}/\log n$ for some constant $κ$ with $κ=2$. Further, we compare the si…
We present a new method for constructing genus 2 curves over a finite field with a given number of points on its Jacobian. This method has important applications in cryptography, where groups of prime order are used as the basis for discrete-log based cryptosystems. Our algorithm provides an alternative to the traditional CM method for constructing genus 2 curves. For a quartic CM field K with primitive CM type, we compute the Igusa class polynomials modulo p for certain small primes p and then use the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) and a bound on the denominators to construct the class polyn…
We give a bound on the primes dividing the denominators of invariants of Picard curves of genus 3 with complex multiplication. Unlike earlier bounds in genus 2 and 3, our bound is based not on bad reduction of curves, but on a very explicit type of good reduction. This approach simultaneously yields a simplification of the proof, and much sharper bounds. In fact, unlike all previous bounds for genus 3, our bound is sharp enough for use in explicit constructions of Picard curves.
In the thirties of the last century, I. M. Vinogradov proved that the inequality $||pα||\le p^{-1/5+\varepsilon}$ has infinitely prime solutions $p$, where $||.||$ denotes the distance to a nearest integer. This result has subsequently been improved by many authors. In particular, Vaughan (1978) replaced the exponent $1/5$ by $1/4$ using his celebrated identity for the von Mangoldt function and a refinement of Fourier analytic arguments. The current record is due to Matomäki (2009) who showed the infinitude of prime solutions of the inequality $||pα||\le p^{-1/3+\varepsilon}$. This exponent $1…
Let $\{\cdot\}$ denote the fractional part and $n \geq 1$ be a fixed integer. In this short note, we show for any prime $p$ the one-to-one correspondence $$\sum_{ν\geq 1} \left\{\frac{n}{p^ν}\right\} > 1 \quad \iff \quad p \mid \mathrm{denom}( B_n(x) - B_n ),$$ where $B_n(x) - B_n$ is the $n$th Bernoulli polynomial without constant term and $\mathrm{denom}(\cdot)$ is its denominator, which is squarefree.
The power sum $1^n + 2^n + \cdots + x^n$ has been of interest to mathematicians since classical times. Johann Faulhaber, Jacob Bernoulli, and others who followed expressed power sums as polynomials in $x$ of degree $n+1$ with rational coefficients. Here we consider the denominators of these polynomials, and prove some of their properties. A remarkable one is that such a denominator equals $n+1$ times the squarefree product of certain primes $p$ obeying the condition that the sum of the base-$p$ digits of $n+1$ is at least $p$. As an application, we derive a squarefree product formula for the d…
Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer and $S$ be a finite non-empty set of primes not containing divisors of $b$. For any non-dense set $A \subset [0,1)$ such that $A \cap \mathbb{Q}$ is invariant under $\times b$ operation, we prove the finiteness of rational numbers in $A$ whose denominators can only be divided by primes in $S$. A quantitative result on the largest prime divisors of the denominators of rational numbers in $A$ is also obtained.
We classify all primes appearing in the denominators of the Hauptmodul $J$ and modular forms for non-arithmetic triangle groups with a cusp. These primes have a congruence condition in terms of the order of the generators of the group. As a corollary we show that for the Hecke group of type $(2,m,\infty)$, the prime $p$ does not appear in the denominator of $J$ if and only if $p\equiv \pm 1\pmod m$.
In this note, for each odd prime $p$, we show that the orders of the $KU$-local homotopy groups of the mod $p$ Moore spectrum are equal to denominators of special values of certain quotients of Dedekind zeta-functions of totally real number fields. With this observation in hand, we give a cute topological proof of the Leopoldt conjecture for those number fields, by showing that it is a consequence of periodicity properties of $KU$-local stable homotopy groups.
Denote the set of algebraic numbers as $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and the set of algebraic integers as $\overline{\mathbb{Z}}$. For $γ\in\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, consider its irreducible polynomial in $\mathbb{Z}[x]$, $F_γ(x)=a_nx^n+\dots+a_0$. Denote $e(γ)=\gcd(a_{n},a_{n-1},\dots,a_1)$. Drungilas, Dubickas and Jankauskas show in a recent paper that $\mathbb{Z}[γ]\cap \mathbb{Q}=\{α\in\mathbb{Q}\mid \{p\mid v_p(α)<0\}\subseteq \{p\mid p|e(γ)\}\}$. Given a number field $K$ and $γ\in\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, we show that there is a subset $X(K,γ)\subseteq \text{Spec}(\mathcal{O}_K)$, for which $\math…
We give bounds on the primes of geometric bad reduction for curves of genus three of primitive CM type in terms of the CM orders. In the case of genus one, there are no primes of geometric bad reduction because CM elliptic curves are CM abelian varieties, which have potential good reduction everywhere. However, for genus at least two, the curve can have bad reduction at a prime although the Jacobian has good reduction. Goren and Lauter gave the first bound in the case of genus two. In the cases of hyperelliptic and Picard curves, our results imply bounds on primes appearing in the denominators…

In this paper we generalize some of our results from, `A note on Farey fractions with odd denominators' to subsets of Farey fractions consisting of fractions with denominators not divisible by a given prime. We also investigate the joint distribution of numerators of differences of h-tuples of consecutive fractions in these sets.
Suppose $p$ is a prime, $t$ is a positive integer, and $f\!\in\!\mathbb{Z}[x]$ is a univariate polynomial of degree $d$ with coefficients of absolute value $<\!p^t$. We show that for any fixed $t$, we can compute the number of roots in $\mathbb{Z}/(p^t)$ of $f$ in deterministic time $(d+\log p)^{O(1)}$. This fixed parameter tractability appears to be new for $t\!\geq\!3$. A consequence for arithmetic geometry is that we can efficiently compute Igusa zeta functions $Z$, for univariate polynomials, assuming the degree of $Z$ is fixed.
We consider the primes which divide the denominator of the x-coordinate of a sequence of rational points on an elliptic curve. It is expected that for every sufficiently large value of the index, each term should be divisible by a primitive prime divisor, one that has not appeared in any earlier term. Proofs of this are known in only a few cases. Weaker results in the general direction are given, using a strong form of Siegel's Theorem and some congruence arguments. Our main result is applied to the study of prime divisors of Somos sequences.
We prove a higher dimensional generalization of Gross and Zagier's theorem on the factorization of differences of singular moduli. Their result is proved by giving a counting formula for the number of isomorphisms between elliptic curves with complex multiplication by two different imaginary quadratic fields $K$ and $K^\prime$, when the curves are reduced modulo a supersingular prime and its powers. Equivalently, the Gross-Zagier formula counts optimal embeddings of the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field into particular maximal orders in $B_{p, \infty}$, the definite quaternion a…
Let $k,p\in \mathbb{N}$ with $p$ prime and let $f\in\mathbb{Z}[x_1,x_2]$ be a bivariate polynomial with degree $d$ and all coefficients of absolute value at most $p^k$. Suppose also that $f$ is variable separated, i.e., $f=g_1+g_2$ for $g_i\in\mathbb{Z}[x_i]$. We give the first algorithm, with complexity sub-linear in $p$, to count the number of roots of $f$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ mod $p^k$ for arbitrary $k$: Our Las Vegas randomized algorithm works in time $(dk\log p)^{O(1)}\sqrt{p}$, and admits a quantum version for smooth curves working in time $(d\log p)^{O(1)}k$. Save for some subtleties conce…

In "Proving that a genus 2 curve has complex multiplication", van Wamelen lists 19 curves of genus two over $\mathbf{Q}$ with complex multiplication (CM). For each of the 19 curves, the CM-field turns out to be cyclic Galois over $\mathbf{Q}$. The generic case of non-Galois quartic CM-fields did not feature in this list, as the field of definition in that case always contains a real quadratic field, known as the real quadratic subfield of the reflex field. We extend van Wamelen's list to include curves of genus two defined over this real quadratic field. Our list therefore contains the smalles…
Consider a rational point on an elliptic curve under an isogeny. Suppose that the action of Galois partitions the set of its pre-images into n orbits. It is shown that all such points above a certain height have their denominator divisible by at least n distinct primes. This generalizes Siegel's theorem and more recent results of Everest et al. For multiplication by a prime l, it is shown that if n>1 then either the point is l times a rational point or the elliptic curve emits a rational l-isogeny.
We present algorithms which, given a genus 2 curve $C$ defined over a finite field and a quartic CM field $K$, determine whether the endomorphism ring of the Jacobian $J$ of $C$ is the full ring of integers in $K$. In particular, we present probabilistic algorithms for computing the field of definition of, and the action of Frobenius on, the subgroups $J[\ell^d]$ for prime powers $\ell^d$. We use these algorithms to create the first implementation of Eisenträger and Lauter's algorithm for computing Igusa class polynomials via the Chinese Remainder Theorem \cite{el}, and we demonstrate the algo…
In this article we prove an analogue of a theorem of Lachaud, Ritzenthaler, and Zykin, which allows us to connect invariants of binary oc-tics to Siegel modular forms of genus 3. We use this connection to show that certain modular functions, when restricted to the hyperelliptic locus, assume values whose denominators are products of powers of primes of bad reduction for the associated hyperelliptic curves. We illustrate our theorem with explicit computations. This work is motivated by the study of the value of these modular functions at CM points of the Siegel upper-half space, which, if their…
Let $A$ be the product of an abelian variety and a torus over a number field $K$, and let $m$ be a positive integer. If $α\in A(K)$ is a point of infinite order, we consider the set of primes $\mathfrak p$ of $K$ such that the reduction $(α\bmod \mathfrak p)$ is well defined and has order coprime to $m$. This set admits a natural density, which we are able to express as a finite sum of products of $\ell$-adic integrals, where $\ell$ varies in the set of prime divisors of $m$. We deduce that the density is a rational number, whose denominator is bounded (up to powers of $m$) in a very strong se…
We show that a genus $2$ curve over a number field whose jacobian has complex multiplication will usually have stable bad reduction at some prime. We prove this by computing the Faltings height of the jacobian in two different ways. First, we use a formula by Colmez and Obus specific to the CM case and valid when the CM field is an abelian extension of the rationals. This formula links the height and the logarithmic derivatives of an $L$-function. The second formula involves a decomposition of the height into local terms based on a hyperelliptic model. We use results of Igusa, Liu, and Saito t…
For a monic polynomial $D(X)$ of even degree, express $\sqrt D$ as a Laurent series in $X^{-1}$; this yields a continued fraction expansion (similar to continued fractions of real numbers): \[\sqrt D=a_0+\dfrac{1}{a_1+\dfrac{1}{a_2+\dfrac{1}{\ddots}}},\quad a_i\text{ polynomials in }X.\] Such continued fractions were first considered by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev. It turns out they are rarely periodic unless $D$ is defined over a finite field. Around 2001 van der Poorten studied non-periodic continued fractions of $\sqrt D$, with $D$ defined over the rationals, and simultaneously the…
