In this paper we generalize some of our results from, `A note on Farey fractions with odd denominators' to subsets of Farey fractions consisting of fractions with denominators not divisible by a given prime. We also investigate the joint distribution of numerators of differences of h-tuples of consecutive fractions in these sets.
We discuss some special property of the Farey sequence. We show in each term of the Farey sequence, ratio of the sum of elements in the denominator and the sum of elements in the numerator is exactly two. We also show that the Farey sequence contains a palindromic structure.
Franel and Landau derived an arithmetic statement involving the Farey sequence that is equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis. Since there is a relationship between the Mertens function and the Riemann hypothesis, there should be a relationship between the Mertens function and the Farey sequence. Functions of subsets of the fractions in Farey sequences that are analogous to the Mertens function are introduced. Mikolas proved that the sum of certain Mertens function values is 1. Results analogous to Mikolas theorem are the defining property of these functions. A relationship between the Farey seq…
Let ${F}_{n}$ be the Farey sequence of order $n$. For $S \subseteq {F}_n$ we let $\mathcal{Q}(S) = \left\{x/y:x,y\in S, x\le y \, \, \textrm{and} \, \, y\neq 0\right\}$. We show that if $\mathcal{Q}(S)\subseteq F_n$, then $|S|\leq n+1$. Moreover, we prove that in any of the following cases: (1) $\mathcal{Q}(S)=F_n$; (2) $\mathcal{Q}(S)\subseteq F_n$ and $|S|=n+1$, we must have $S = \left\{0,1,\frac{1}{2},\ldots,\frac{1}{n}\right\}$ or $S=\left\{0,1,\frac{1}{n},\ldots,\frac{n-1}{n}\right\}$ except for $n=4$, where we have an additional set $\{0, 1, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{2}{3}\}$ for t…
We establish the limiting distribution of certain subsets of Farey sequences, i.e., sequences of primitive rational points, on expanding horospheres in covers $Δ\backslash\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$ of $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{R})$, where $Δ$ is a finite index subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{Z})$. These subsets can be obtained by projecting to the hyperplane $\{(x_1,\ldots,x_{n+1})\in\mathbb{R}^{n+1}:x_{n+1}=1\}$ sets of the form $\mathbf{A}=\bigcup_{j=1}^J\boldsymbol{a}_jΔ$, where for all $j$, $\boldsymbol{a}_j$ is a primitive lattice point in $\math…
In this note we construct a series of small subsets containing a non-d-th power element in a finite field by applying certain bounds on incomplete character sums. Precisely, let $h=\lfloor q^δ\rfloor>1$ and $d\mid q^h-1$. Let $r$ be a prime divisor of $q-1$ such that the largest prime power part of $q-1$ has the form $r^s$. Then there is a constant $0<ε<1$ such that for a ratio at least $ {q^{-εh}}$ of $α\in \mathbb{F}_{q^{h}} \backslash\mathbb{F}_{q}$, the set $S=\{ α-x^t, x\in\mathbb{F}_{q}\}$ of cardinality $1+\frac {q-1} {M(h)}$ contains a non-d-th power in $\mathbb{F}_{q^{\lfloor q^δ\rflo…
