Let ${F}_{n}$ be the Farey sequence of order $n$. For $S \subseteq {F}_n$ we let $\mathcal{Q}(S) = \left\{x/y:x,y\in S, x\le y \, \, \textrm{and} \, \, y\neq 0\right\}$. We show that if $\mathcal{Q}(S)\subseteq F_n$, then $|S|\leq n+1$. Moreover, we prove that in any of the following cases: (1) $\mathcal{Q}(S)=F_n$; (2) $\mathcal{Q}(S)\subseteq F_n$ and $|S|=n+1$, we must have $S = \left\{0,1,\frac{1}{2},\ldots,\frac{1}{n}\right\}$ or $S=\left\{0,1,\frac{1}{n},\ldots,\frac{n-1}{n}\right\}$ except for $n=4$, where we have an additional set $\{0, 1, \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{2}{3}\}$ for the second case. Our results are based on Graham's GCD conjectures, which have been proved by Balasubramanian and Soundararajan.
Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $S$ be a sequence of $n$ integers in the interval $[0,n-1]$. If there is an $r$ such that any nonempty subsequence with sum $\equiv 0$ $\pmod n$ has length $=r,$ then $S$ has at most two distinct values. This proves a conjecture of R. L. Graham. A previous result of P. Erdős and E. Szemerédi shows the validity of this conjecture if $n$ is a large prime number.
We prove that the set of Farey fractions of order $T$, that is, the set $\{α/β\in \Q : \gcd(α, β) = 1, 1 \le α, β\le T\}$, is uniformly distributed in residue classes modulo a prime $p$ provided $T \ge p^{1/2 +\eps}$ for any fixed $\eps>0$. We apply this to obtain upper bounds for the Lang--Trotter conjectures on Frobenius traces and Frobenius fields ``on average'' over a one-parametric family of elliptic curves.

Erdös and Turán once conjectured that any set $A\subset\mathbb{N}$ with $\sum_{a\in A}{1}/{a}=\infty$ should contain infinitely many progressions of arbitrary length $k\geq3$. For the two-dimensional case Graham conjectured that if $B\subset \mathbb{N}\times\mathbb{N}$ satisfies $$\sum\limits_{(x,y)\in B}\frac{1}{x^2+y^2}=\infty,$$ then for any $s\geq2$, $B$ contains an $s\times s$ axes-parallel grid. In this paper it is shown that if the Graham conjecture is true for some $s\geq2$, then the Erdös-Turán conjecture is true for $k=2s-1$.
An old conjecture of Graham stated that if $n$ is a prime and $S$ is a sequence of $n$ terms from the cyclic group $C_n$ such that all (nontrivial) zero-sum subsequences have the same length, then $S$ must contain at most two distinct terms. In 1976, Erdős and Szemeredi gave a proof of the conjecture for sufficiently large primes $n$. However, the proof was complicated enough that the details for small primes were never worked out. Both in the paper of Erdős and Szemeredi and in a later survey by Erdős and Graham, the complexity of the proof was lamented. Recently, a new proof, valid even for …
We show that for every $r \geq 1$, and all $r$ distinct (sufficiently large) primes $p_1,..., p_r > p_0(r)$, there exist infinitely many integers $n$ such that ${2n \choose n}$ is divisible by these primes to only low multiplicity. From a theorem of Kummer, an upper bound for the number of times that a prime $p_j$ can divide ${2n \choose n}$ is $1+\log n / \log p_j$; and our theorem shows that for every $\varepsilon > 0$, $r \geq 1$, and any sufficiently large primes $p_1,...,p_r > p_0(\varepsilon,r)$, we can find integers $n$ where for $j=1,...,r$, $p_j$ divides ${2n \choose n}$ with multipli…
Franel and Landau derived an arithmetic statement involving the Farey sequence that is equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis. Since there is a relationship between the Mertens function and the Riemann hypothesis, there should be a relationship between the Mertens function and the Farey sequence. Functions of subsets of the fractions in Farey sequences that are analogous to the Mertens function are introduced. Mikolas proved that the sum of certain Mertens function values is 1. Results analogous to Mikolas theorem are the defining property of these functions. A relationship between the Farey seq…

We prove an old conjecture of Erd{\H o}s and Graham on sums of unit fractions: There exists a constant $b>0$ such that if we $r$-color the integers in $2,b^r]$, then there exists a monochromatic set $S$ such that $\sum_{n \in S} 1/n=1$.
We study solvability of the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} \frac{n}{2^{n}}=\sum_{i=1}^{k}\frac{a_{i}}{2^{a_{i}}}, \end{equation*} in integers $n, k, a_{1},\ldots, a_{k}$ satisfying the conditions $k\geq 2$ and $a_{i}<a_{i+1}$ for $i=1,\ldots,k-1$. The above Diophantine equation (of polynomial-exponential type) was mentioned in the monograph of Erdős and Graham, where several questions were stated. Some of these questions were already answered by Borwein and Loring. We extend their work and investigate other aspects of Erdős and Graham equation. First of all, we obtain the upper bound f…
A bounded Apollonian circle packing (ACP) is an ancient Greek construction which is made by repeatedly inscribing circles into the triangular interstices in a Descartes configuration of four mutually tangent circles. Remarkably, if the original four circles have integer curvature, all of the circles in the packing will have integer curvature as well. In this paper, we compute a lower bound for the number $κ(P,X)$ of integers less than $X$ occurring as curvatures in a bounded integer ACP $P$, and prove a conjecture of Graham, Lagarias, Mallows, Wilkes, and Yan that the ratio $κ(P,X)/X$ is great…
It follows from work of Chung and Graham that for a certain family of polynomials $T_{n}(x)$, derived from the descent statistic on permutations, the coefficient sequence of $T_{n-1}(x)$ coincides with that of the polynomial $T_{n}(x)/\left(1+x+\cdots+x^{n-1}\right)$. We observed computationally that the inflated $\mathbf{s}$-Eulerian polynomial $Q_{n}^{(\mathbf{s})}(x)$, which satisfies $Q_{n}^{(\mathbf{s})}(x) = T_{n}(x)$ when $\mathbf{s}=(1,2,\ldots,n)$, also satisfies this property for many sequences $\mathbf{s}$. In this work we characterize those sequences $\mathbf{s}$ for which the coef…
