The goal of this book is to characterize algebraically the closed 4-manifolds that fibre nontrivially or admit geometries in the sense of Thurston, or which are obtained by surgery on 2-knots, and to provide a reference for the topology of such manifolds and knots. The first chapter is purely algebraic. The rest of the book may be divided into three parts: general results on homotopy and surgery (Chapters 2-6), geometries and geometric decompositions (Chapters 7-13), and 2-knots (Chapters 14-18). In many cases the Euler characteristic, fundamental group and Stiefel-Whitney classes together form a complete system of invariants for the homotopy type of such manifolds, and the possible values of the invariants can be described explicitly. The strongest results are characterizations of manifolds which fibre homotopically over S^1 or an aspherical surface (up to homotopy equivalence) and infrasolvmanifolds (up to homeomorphism). As a consequence 2-knots whose groups are poly-Z are determined up to Gluck reconstruction and change of orientations by their groups alone. This book arose out of two earlier books "2-Knots and their Groups" and "The Algebraic Characterization of Geometric 4-Manifolds", published by Cambridge University Press for the Australian Mathematical Society and for the London Mathematical Society, respectively. About a quarter of the present text has been taken from these books, and I thank Cambridge University Press for their permission to use this material. The book has been revised in March 2007 and again in November 2022. For details see the end of the preface.
As an example of the transitions between some of the eight geometries of Thurston, investigated before, we study the geometries supported by the cone-manifolds obtained by surgery on the trefoil knot with singular set the core of the surgery. The geometric structures are explicitly constructed. The most interesting phenomenon is the transition from $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-geometry to $S^{3}$-geometry through Nil-geometry. A plot of the different geometries is given, in the spirit of the analogous plot of Thurston for the geometries supported by surgeries on the figure-eight knot.
We show that if a surgery on a knot in a product sutured manifold yields the same product sutured manifold, then this knot is a 0-- or 1--crossing knot. The proof uses techniques from sutured manifold theory.
We give explicit formulae for the volumes of hyperbolic cone-manifolds of double twist knots, a class of two-bridge knots which includes twist knots and two-bridge knots with Conway notation $C(2n,3)$. We also study the Riley polynomial of a class of one-relator groups which includes two-bridge knot groups.
We fix a null-homologous, homotopically essential knot $J$ in a 3-manifold with PTFA fundamental group and study concordance of knots that are homotopic to $J$. We construct an infinite family of knots that are characteristic to $J$, and then use $L^2$-methods to show that they are not concordant to $J$.
Examples are given to show that some compact contractible 4-manifolds can be knotted in the 4-sphere. It is then proved that any finitely presented perfect group with a balanced presentation is a knot group for an embedding of some contractible 4-manifold in the 4-sphere.
Lickorish has constructed large families of contractible 4--manifolds that have knotted embeddings in the 4--sphere and has also shown that every finitely presented perfect group with balanced presentation occurs as the fundamental group of the complement of a knotted contractible manifold. Here we make a few observations regarding Lickorish's construction, showing how to extend it to construct contractible 4--manifolds which have an infinite number of knotted embeddings and also to construct knotted embeddings of the Mazur manifold for which the complement has trivial fundamental group.
We prove that there exist infinitely many topologically slice knots which cannot bound a smooth null-homologous disk in any definite 4-manifold. Furthermore, we show that we can take such knots so that they are linearly independent in the the knot concordance group.
We discuss some consequences Fintushel-Stern `knot surgery' operation on 4-manifolds coming from its handlebody description. We give some generalizations of this operation and give a counterexample to their conjecture.
In this article we study Lefschetz fibration structures on knot surgery 4-manifolds obtained from an elliptic surface E(2) using Kanenobu knots $K$. As a result, we get an infinite family of simply connected mutually diffeomorphic 4-manifolds coming from a pair of inequivalent Kanenobu knots. We also obtain an infinite family of simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds, each of which admits more than one inequivalent Lefschetz fibration structures of the same generic fiber.
We consider the existence of simple closed geodesics or "geodesic knots" in finite volume orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Previous results show that at least one geodesic knot always exists [Bull. London Math. Soc. 31(1) (1999) 81-86], and that certain arithmetic manifolds contain infinitely many geodesic knots [J. Diff. Geom. 38 (1993) 545-558], [Experimental Mathematics 10(3) (2001) 419-436]. In this paper we show that all cusped orientable finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds contain infinitely many geodesic knots. Our proof is constructive, and the infinite family of geodesic knots prod…
We show that if $B$ is an aspherical 2-orbifold in one of the families known to have orbifold fundamental groups of weight 1 then $B$ is the base of a Seifert fibration of a 2-knot manifold $M(K)$.
We obtain an explicit representation, as Dunwoody manifolds, of all cyclic branched coverings of torus knots of type $(p,mp\pm 1)$, with $p>1$ and $m>0$.
It is experimentally known that achiral hyperbolic 3-manifolds are quite sporadic at least among those with small volume, while we can find plenty of them as amphicheiral knot complements in the 3-sphere. In this paper, we show that there exist infinitely many achiral 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds not homeomorphic to any amphicheiral null-homologous knot complement in any closed achiral 3-manifold.
We prove for a large class of knots that the meridional rank coincides with the bridge number. This class contains all knots whose exterior is a graph manifold. This gives a partial answer to a question of S. Cappell and J. Shaneson, see problem 1.11 on Kirby's list.
In this article we construct a family of knot surgery $4$-manifolds admitting arbitrarily many nonisomorphic Lefschetz fibration structures with the same genus fiber. We obtain such families by performing knot surgery on an elliptic surface $E(2)$ using connected sums of fibered knots obtained by Stallings twist from a slice knot $3_1 \sharp 3^*_1$. By comparing their monodromy groups induced from the corresponding monodromy factorizations, we show that they admit mutually nonisomorphic Lefschetz fibration structures.
In this article we prove that, if $X$ is a smooth $4$-manifold containing an embedded double node neighborhood, all knot surgery $4$-manifolds $X_K$ are mutually diffeomorphic to each other after a connected sum with $\mathbb{CP}^2$. Hence, by applying to the simply connected elliptic surface $E(n)$, we also show that every knot surgery $4$-manifold $E(n)_K$ is almost completely decomposable.
We calculate the volumes of the hyperbolic twist knot cone-manifolds using the Schläfli formula. Even though general ideas for calculating the volumes of cone-manifolds are around, since there is no concrete calculation written, we present here the concrete calculations. We express the length of the singular locus in terms of the distance between the two axes fixed by two generators. In this way the calculation becomes easier than using the singular locus directly. The volumes of the hyperbolic twist knot cone-manifolds simpler than Stevedore's knot are known. As an application, we give the vo…
In this paper we study some consequences of the author's classification of graph manifolds by their profinite fundamental groups. In particular we study commensurability, the behaviour of knots, and relation to mapping classes. We prove that the exteriors of graph knots are distinguished among all 3-manifold groups by their profinite fundamental groups. We also prove a strong conjugacy separability result for certain mapping classes of surfaces.
Given a simply-connected closed 4-manifold $X$ and a smoothly embedded oriented surface $Σ$, various constructions based on Fintushel-Stern knot surgery have produced new surfaces in $X$ that are pairwise homeomorphic to $Σ$, but not diffeomorphic. We prove that for all known examples of surface knots constructed from knot surgery operations that preserve the fundamental group of the complement of surface knots, they become pairwise diffeomorphic after stabilizing by connected summing with one $S^2\tilde{\times}S^2$. When $X$ is spin, we show in addition that any surfaces obtained by a knot su…
We show that every strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot is a Dunwoody manifold. This result, together with the converse statement previously obtained by Grasselli and Mulazzani, proves that the class of Dunwoody manifolds coincides with the class of strongly-cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots. As a consequence, we obtain a parametrization of (1,1)-knots by 4-tuples of integers. Moreover, using a representation of (1,1)-knots by the mapping class group of the twice punctured torus, we provide an algorithm which gives the parametrization of all torus knots.
Let M be a closed 3-manifold obtained by Dehn surgery along the figure-eight knot. We give a formula of the Reisdemeisiter torsion of M for any irreducible SL(2;C)-representation. It is described as a rational expression of the trace of the image of the meridian.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relations between Seifert manifolds and (1,1)-knots. In particular, we prove that every orientable Seifert manifold with invariants {Oo,0|-1;(p,q),...,(p,q),(l, l-1)} has a cyclically presented fundamental group and, moreover, it is the n-fold strongly-cyclic covering of the lens space L(|nlq-p|,q), branched over the (1,1)-knot K(q,q(nl-2),p-2q,p-q) if p>=2q, and over the (1,1)-knot K(p-q,2q-p,q(nl-2),p-q) if p<2q.
We give some remarks on two closely related issues as stated in the title. In particular we show that a Montesinos knot is SU(2)-simple if and only if it is a 2-bridge knot, extending a result of Zentner for 3-tangle summand pretzel knots. We conjecture with some evidence that an SU(2)-cyclic rational homology 3-sphere is an L-space.
We consider closed acylindrical surfaces in 3-manifolds and in knot and link complements, and show that the genus of these surfaces is bounded linearly by the number of tetrahedra in the triangulation of the manifold and by the number of rational (or alternating) tangles in a projection of a link (or knot). For each g we find knots with tunnel number 2 and manifolds of Heegaard genus 3 containing acylindrical surfaces of genus g. Finally, we construct 3-bridge knots containing quasi-Fuchsinan surfaces of unbounded genus, and use them to find manifolds of Heegaard genus 2 and homology spheres o…
Knots and links in 3-manifolds are studied by applying intersection invariants to singular concordances. The resulting link invariants generalize the Arf invariant, the mod 2 Sato-Levine invariants, and Milnor's triple linking numbers. Besides fitting into a general theory of Whitney towers, these invariants provide obstructions to the existence of a singular concordance which can be homotoped to an embedding after stabilization by connected sums with $S^2\times S^2$. Results include classifications of stably slice links in orientable 3-manifolds, stable knot concordance in products of an orie…
From a handlebody-theoretic perspective, the simplest compact, contractible 4-manifolds, other than the 4-ball, are Mazur manifolds. We produce the first pairs of Mazur manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. Our diffeomorphism obstruction comes from our proof that the knot Floer homology concordance invariant $ν$ is an invariant of the smooth 4-manifold associated to a knot in the 3-sphere by attaching an n-framed 2-handle to the 4-ball along the knot. In contrast, we also show (modulo forthcoming work of Ozsváth and Szabó) that the concordance invariants $τ$ and $ε$ are not in…
We define the property (D) for nontrivial knots. We show that the fundamental group of the manifold obtained by Dehn surgery on a knot $K$ with property (D) with slope $\frac{p}{q}\ge 2g(K)-1$ is not left orderable. By making full use of the fixed point method, we prove that (1) nontrivial knots which are closures of positive $1$-bridge braids have property (D); (2) L-space satellite knots, with positive $1$-bridge braid patterns, and companion with property (D), have property (D); (3) the fundamental group of the manifold obtained by Dehn filling on $v2503$ is not left orderable. Additionally…
In this paper we show that all 3-manifolds of a family introduced by M. J. Dunwoody are cyclic coverings of lens spaces (eventually $\bf S^3$), branched over genus one 1-bridge knots. As a consequence, we give a positive answer to the Dunwoody conjecture that all the elements of a wide subclass are cyclic coverings of $\bf S^3$ branched over a knot. Moreover, we show that all branched cyclic coverings of a 2-bridge knot belong to this subclass; this implies that the fundamental group of each branched cyclic covering of a 2-bridge knot admits a geometric cyclic presentation.
We show that a transverse link in a contact structure supported by an open book decomposition can be transversely braided. We also generalize Markov's theorem on when the closures of two braids represent (transversely) isotopic links.
This is a survey paper on algorithms for solving problems in 3-dimensional topology. In particular, it discusses Haken's approach to the recognition of the unknot, and recent variations.
We construct an infinite family of hyperbolic, homologically thin knots that are not quasi-alternating. To establish the latter, we argue that the branched double-cover of each knot in the family does not bound a negative definite 4-manifold with trivial first homology and bounded second betti number. This fact depends in turn on information from the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, which we establish by way of a relationship to, and calculation of, the Turaev torsion.
We give two infinite families of examples of closed, orientable, irreducible 3-manifolds $M$ such that $b_1(M)=1$ and $π_1(M)$ has weight 1, but $M$ is not the result of Dehn surgery along a knot in the 3-sphere. This answers a question of Aschenbrenner, Friedl and Wilton, and provides the first examples of irreducible manifolds with $b_1=1$ that are known not to be surgery on a knot in the 3-sphere. One family consists of Seifert fibered 3-manifolds, while each member of the other family is not even homology cobordant to any Seifert fibered 3-manifold. None of our examples are homology cobord…
We show that two-bridge knots and alternating fibered knots admit no purely cosmetic surgeries, i.e., no pair of distinct Dehn surgeries on such a knot produce 3-manifolds that are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds. Our argument, based on a recent result by Hanselman, uses several invariants of knots or 3-manifolds; for knots, we study the signature and some finite type invariants, and for 3-manifolds, we deploy the $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ Casson invariant.
We show that given a 3-manifold $Y$ there is only a finite number of alternating knots $K \subset S^3$ such that $Y$ can be obtained by surgery on $K$. A very similar but somewhat not complete statement has been obtained in a recent preprint of Lackenby and Purcell.
These notes are based on the lectures given by the author during Winter Braids IX in Reims in March 2019. We discuss slice knots and why they are interesting, as well as some ways to decide if a given knot is or is not slice. We describe various methods for drawing diagrams of double branched covers of knots in the 3-sphere and surfaces in the 4-ball, and how these can be useful to decide if an alternating knot is slice. We include a description of the computer search for slice alternating knots due to the author and Frank Swenton.
We show that the problem of deciding whether a knot in a fixed closed orientable 3-dimensional manifold bounds a surface of genus at most $g$ is in co-NP. This answers a question of Agol, Hass, and Thurston in 2002. Previously, this was known for rational homology 3-spheres, by the work of the first author.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a simple closed curve on the boundary of a genus two handlebody to decompose the handlebody into (torus with one boundary component times [0,1]. We use this condition to decide whether a simple closed curve on a genus two Heegaard surface is a GOF-knot (genus one fibered knot) which induces the Heegaard splitting. By using this, we determine the number and the positions with respect to the Heegaard splittings of GOF-knots in the 3-manifolds with reducible genus two Heegaard splittings. This is another proof of results of Morimoto and Baker.
I calculate optimistically asymptotic behaviors of the WRT SU(2) invariants for the three-manifolds obtained from the figure-eight knot by p-surgeries with p=0,1,2,...,10, from which one can extract volumes and the Chern-Simons invariants of these closed manifolds. I conjecture that this also holds for general closed three-manifolds.

We are interested in finite groups acting orientation-preservingly on 3-manifolds (arbitrary actions, ie not necessarily free actions). In particular we consider finite groups which contain an involution with nonempty connected fixed point set. This condition is satisfied by the isometry group of any hyperbolic cyclic branched covering of a strongly invertible knot as well as by the isometry group of any hyperbolic 2-fold branched covering of a knot in the 3-sphere. In the paper we give a characterization of nonsolvable groups of this type. Then we consider some possible applications to the st…
Motivated by the L-space conjecture, we investigate various notions of order-detection of slopes on knot manifolds. These notions are designed to characterise when rational homology 3-spheres obtained by gluing compact manifolds along torus boundary components have left-orderable fundamental groups and when a Dehn filling of a knot manifold has a left-orderable fundamental group. Our developments parallel existing results in the case of Heegaard-Floer slope detection and foliation slope detection, leading to several conjectured structure theorems that connect relative Heegaard-Floer homology a…
Relative self-linking and linking "numbers" for pairs of knots in oriented 3-manifolds are defined in terms of intersection invariants of immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds. The resulting concordance invariants generalize the usual homological notion of linking by taking into account the fundamental group of the ambient manifold and often map onto infinitely generated groups. The knot invariants generalize the cyclic (type 1) invariants of Kirk and Livingston and when taken with respect to certain preferred knots, called spherical knots, relative self-linking numbers are characterized geometrica…
Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called purely cosmetic if their surgered manifolds are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds. Gordon conjectured that non-trivial knots in $S^3$ do not admit purely cosmetic surgeries. In this article, we confirm this conjecture for cable knots.
In view of the self-linking invariant, the number $|K|$ of framed knots in $S^3$ with given underlying knot $K$ is infinite. In fact, the second author previously defined affine self-linking invariants and used them to show that $|K|$ is infinite for every knot in an orientable manifold unless the manifold contains a connected sum factor of $S^1\times S^2$; the knot $K$ need not be zero-homologous and the manifold is not required to be compact. We show that when $M$ is orientable, the number $|K|$ is infinite unless $K$ intersects a non-separating sphere at exactly one point, in which case $|K…
We consider the question of when is the closed manifold obtained by elementary surgery on an $n$-knot Seifert fibred over a 2-orbifold. After some observations on the classical case, we concentrate on the cases n=2 and 3. We have found a new family of 2-knots with torsion-free, solvable group, overlooked in earlier work. We know of no higher dimensional examples.
We consider slice disks for knots in the boundary of a smooth compact 4-manifold $X^{4}$. We call a knot $K \subset \partial X$ deep slice in $X$ if there is a smooth properly embedded 2-disk in $X$ with boundary $K$, but $K$ is not concordant to the unknot in a collar neighborhood $\partial X \times I$ of the boundary. We point out how this concept relates to various well-known conjectures and give some criteria for the nonexistence of such deep slice knots. Then we show, using the Wall self-intersection invariant and a result of Rohlin, that every 4-manifold consisting of just one 0- and a n…
We classify $5$-manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb Z$ and $π_{2}$ a finitely generated abelian group in terms of the cup product on the second cohomology of the universal covering. The classification result is applied to study simple knots $k \colon S^{3} \subset S^{5}$ and the question, which compact topological or smooth orientable $5$-manifold is a topological or smooth fibre bundle over the circle with simply-connected fibre.
Given a 3-manifold $Y$ and a free homotopy class in $[S^1,Y]$, we investigate the set of topological concordance classes of knots in $Y \times [0,1]$ representing the given homotopy class. The concordance group of knots in the 3-sphere acts on this set. We show in many cases that the action is not transitive, using two techniques. Our first technique uses Reidemeister torsion invariants, and the second uses linking numbers in covering spaces. In particular, we show using covering links that for the trivial homotopy class, and for any 3-manifold that is not the 3-sphere, the set of orbits is in…
For each partial flag manifold of SU(N), we define a Floer homology theory for knots in 3-manifolds, using instantons with codimension-2 singularities.
We calculate Blanchfield pairings of 3-manifolds. In particular, we give a formula for the Blanchfield pairing of a fibred 3-manifold and we give a new proof that the Blanchfield pairing of a knot can be expressed in terms of a Seifert matrix.
