From a handlebody-theoretic perspective, the simplest compact, contractible 4-manifolds, other than the 4-ball, are Mazur manifolds. We produce the first pairs of Mazur manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. Our diffeomorphism obstruction comes from our proof that the knot Floer homology concordance invariant $ν$ is an invariant of the smooth 4-manifold associated to a knot in the 3-sphere by attaching an n-framed 2-handle to the 4-ball along the knot. In contrast, we also show (modulo forthcoming work of Ozsváth and Szabó) that the concordance invariants $τ$ and $ε$ are not invariants of such 4-manifolds. As a corollary to the existence of exotic Mazur manifolds, we produce integer homology 3-spheres admitting two distinct $S^1 \times S^2$ surgeries, resolving a question from Problem 1.16 in Kirby's list.
The Slope Conjecture proposed by Garoufalidis asserts that the degree of the colored Jones polynomial determines a boundary slope, and its refinement, the Strong Slope Conjecture proposed by Kalfagianni and Tran asserts that the linear term in the degree determines the topology of an essential surface that satisfies the Slope Conjecture. Under certain hypotheses, we show that Mazur doubles of knots satisfy the Strong Slope Conjecture if the original knot does. Consequently, any knot obtained by a finite sequence of cabling, untwisted w--generalized Whitehead doublings with w > 0, connected sum…
We use bordered Floer theory to study properties of twisted Mazur pattern satellite knots $Q_{n}(K)$. We prove that $Q_n(K)$ is not Floer homologically thin, with two exceptions. We calculate the 3-genus of $Q_{n}(K)$ in terms of the twisting parameter $n$ and the 3-genus of the companion $K$, and we determine when $Q_n(K)$ is fibered. As an application to our results on Floer thickness and 3-genus, we verify the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture for many of these satellite knots.
We use classical techniques to answer some questions raised by Daniele Celoria about almost-concordance of knots in arbitrary closed $3$-manifolds. We first prove that, given $Y^3 \neq S^3$, for any non-trivial element $g\in π_1(Y)$ there are infinitely many distinct smooth almost-concordance classes in the free homotopy class of the unknot. In particular we consider these distinct smooth almost-concordance classes on the boundary of a Mazur manifold and we show none of these distinct classes bounds a PL-disk in the Mazur manifold, but all the representatives we construct are topologically sli…
We study the effect of satellite operations on the Upsilon invariant of Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo. We obtain results concerning when a knot and its satellites are independent; for example, we show that the set $\{D_{2^i,1}\}_{i=1}^\infty$ is a basis for an infinite rank summand of the group of smooth concordance classes of topologically slice knots, for D the positive clasped untwisted Whitehead double of any knot with positive tau-invariant, e.g. the right-handed trefoil. We also prove that the image of the Mazur satellite operator on the smooth knot concordance group contains an infinite rank s…
We construct an infinite family $\{ C_{n,k}\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ of corks of Mazur type satisfying $2n\leq \mathrm{sc}^{\mathrm{sp}}(C_{n,k})\leq O(n^{3/2})$ for any positive integer $n$. Furthermore, using these corks, we construct an infinite family $\{(W_{n,k},W'_{n,k})\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ of exotic pairs of $4$-manifolds with boundary whose special shadow-complexities satisfy the above inequalities. We also discuss exotic pairs with small shadow-complexity.
The present paper produces examples of Gauss diagram formulae for virtual knot invariants which have no analogue in the classical knot case. These combinatorial formulae contain additional information about how a subdiagram is embedded in a virtual knot diagram. The additional information comes from the second author's recently discovered notion of parity. For a parity of flat virtual knots, the new combinatorial formulae are Kauffman finite-type invariants. However, many of the combinatorial formulae possess exotic properties. It is shown that there exists an integer valued virtualization inv…
It is known that every exotic smooth structure on a simply connected closed 4-manifold is determined by a codimention zero compact contractible Stein submanifold and an involution on its boundary. Such a pair is called a cork. In this paper, we construct infinitely many knotted imbeddings of corks in 4-manifolds such that they induce infinitely many different exotic smooth structures. We also show that we can imbed an arbitrary finite number of corks disjointly into 4-manifolds, so that the corresponding involutions on the boundary of the contractible 4-manifolds give mutually different exotic…
We show that, for each integer n, there exist infinitely many pairs of n-framed knots representing homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic (Stein) 4-manifolds, which are the simplest possible exotic 4-manifolds regarding handlebody structures. To produce these examples, we introduce a new description of cork twists and utilize satellite maps. As an application, we produce knots with the same 0-surgery which are not concordant for any orientations, disproving the Akbulut-Kirby conjecture given in 1978.
We show that the cobordism maps on Khovanov homology can distinguish smooth surfaces in the 4-ball that are exotically knotted (i.e., isotopic through ambient homeomorphisms but not ambient diffeomorphisms). We develop new techniques for distinguishing cobordism maps on Khovanov homology, drawing on knot symmetries and braid factorizations. We also show that Plamenevskaya's transverse invariant in Khovanov homology is preserved by maps induced by positive ascending cobordisms.
This paper studies properly embedded surfaces in the 4-ball that are exotically knotted (i.e., topologically but not smoothly isotopic), and leverages this local phenomenon to study surfaces in larger 4-manifolds. The main results provide a new construction of exotically knotted surfaces, including exotic slice surfaces of all genera in the 4-ball and exotic closed surfaces in larger 4-manifolds. The construction is well-suited to the complex and symplectic settings, providing the first examples of exotically knotted complex curves and symplectic 2-spheres. Along the way, we articulate some di…
When can surgery on a null-homologous knot K in a rational homology sphere produce a non-separating sphere? We use Heegaard Floer homology to give sufficient conditions for K to be unknotted. We also discuss some applications to homology cobordism, concordance, and Mazur manifolds.
In the previous paper the author defined an infinite order plug $(P,φ)$ which gives rise to infinite Fintushel-Stern's knot-surgeries. Here, we give two 4-dimensional infinitely many exotic families $Y_n$, $Z_n$ of exotic enlargements of the plug. The families $Y_n$, $Z_n$ have $b_2=3$, $4$ and the boundaries are 3-manifolds with $b_1=1$, $0$ respectively. We give a plug (or g-cork) twist $(P,φ_{p,q})$ producing the 2-bridge knot or link surgery by combining the plug $(P,φ)$. As a further example, we describe a 4-dimensional twist $(M,μ)$ between knot-surgeries for two mutant knots. The twiste…
It is known that there is a unique concordance class in the free homotopy class of $S^1\times pt \subset S^1 \times S^2$. The constructive proof of this fact is given by the second author. It turns out that all the concordances in this construction are invertible. The knots $K\subset S^{1}\times S^{2}$ with hyperbolic complements and trivial symmetry group are special interest here, because they can be used to generate absolutely exotic compact 4-manifolds by the recipe given by Akbulut and Ruberman. Here we built absolutely exotic manifold pairs by this construction, and show that this constr…
Manolescu and Piccirillo recently initiated a program to construct an exotic $S^4$ or $\# n \mathbb{CP}^2$ by using zero surgery homeomorphisms and Rasmussen's $s$-invariant. They find five knots that if any were slice, one could construct an exotic $S^4$ and disprove the Smooth $4$-dimensional Poincaré conjecture. We rule out this exciting possibility and show that these knots are not slice. To do this, we use a zero surgery homeomorphism to relate slice properties of two knots \textit{stably} after a connected sum with some $4$-manifold. Furthermore, we show that our techniques will extend t…
In this article, we construct infinitley many simply connected, nonsymplectic and pairwise nondiffeomorphic 4-manifolds starting from E(n) and applying the sequence of knot surgery, ordinary blowups and rational blowdown. We also compute the Seiberg-Witten invariants of these manifolds.
We discuss corks, and introduce new objects which we call plugs. Though plugs are fundamentally different objects, they also detect exotic smooth structures in 4-manifolds like corks. We discuss relation between corks, plugs and rational blow-downs. We show how to detect corks and plugs inside of some exotic manifolds. Furthermore, we construct knotted corks and plugs.
We show that the smooth $4$-manifold $M$ obtained by attaching a $2$-handle to $B^4$ along a certain knot $K\subset \partial B^4$ admits infinitely many absolutely exotic copies $M_n$, $n=0,1,2..$, such that each copy $M_n$ is obtained by attaching $2$-handle to a fixed compact smooth contractible manifold $W$ along the iterates $f^{n}(c)$ of a knot $c\subset \partial W$ by a diffeomorphism $f:\partial W \to \partial W$. This generalizes the example in author's 1991 paper, which corresponds to $n=1$ case.
We discuss the relation between Fintushel-Stern knot surgery operation on 4-manifolds and Scharlemann manifolds, and as a corollary show that they all are standard. Along the way we show that the fishtail can exotically knot in the 4-sphere infinitely many ways.
Using 1-twist rim surgery, we construct infinitely many smoothly embedded, orientable surfaces in the 4-ball bounding a knot in the 3-sphere that are pairwise topologically isotopic, but not ambient diffeomorphic. We distinguish the surfaces using the maps they induce on perturbed sutured Floer homology. Along the way, we show that the cobordism map induced by an ascending surface in a Weinstein cobordism preserves the transverse invariant in knot Floer homology.
We show that a certain involution on the well known homology sphere (the boundary of the Mazur manifold) induces a nontrivial homomorphism on its Heegard-Floer homology groups (recently defined by Ozsvath and Szabo). We discuss a possible application of this to constructing exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds.
Wall-type stabilization problems investigate the collapse of exotic 4-dimensional phenomena under stabilization operations (e.g., taking connected sums with $S^2 \times S^2$). We propose an elementary approach to these problems, providing a construction of exotic 4-manifolds and knotted surfaces that are candidates to remain exotic after stabilization -- including examples in the setting of closed, simply connected 4-manifolds. As a proof of concept, we show this construction yields exotic surfaces in the 4-ball that remain exotic after (internal) stabilization, detected by the cobordism maps …
Fintushel-Stern's knot surgery gave many pairs of exotic manifolds, which are homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic. We show that if an elliptic fibration has two parallel, oppositely oriented vanishing circles (for example $S^2\times S^2$ or Matsumoto's $S^4$), then the knot surgery gives rise to standard manifolds. The diffeomorphism can give an alternative proof that Scharlemann's manifold is standard (originally by Akbulut [Ak1]).
Since the first work on exotic smoothness in physics, it was folklore to assume a direct influence of exotic smoothness to quantum gravity. Thus, the negative result of Duston (arXiv:0911.4068) was a surprise. A closer look into the semi-classical approach uncovered the implicit assumption of a close connection between geometry and smoothness structure. But both structures, geometry and smoothness, are independent of each other. In this paper we calculate the "smoothness structure" part of the path integral in quantum gravity assuming that the "sum over geometries" is already given. For that p…
