We define a `Higgs field' for a four-dimensional spin$^c$-manifold to be a smooth section of its positive half-spinor bundle, transverse to the zero section, and defined only up to a positive functional factor. This is intended to be a generalization of almost complex structures on real four-manifolds, each of which may in fact be treated as a Higgs field without zeros for a specific spin$^c$-structure. The notions of totally real or pseudoholomorphic immersions of real surfaces in an almost complex manifold of real dimension four have straighforward generalizations to the case of a spin$^c$-manifold with a Higgs field.
Our results consist, first, in showing that totally real immersions of closed oriented surfaces in four-dimensional spin$^c$-manifolds with Higgs fields have, basically, the same properties as in the almost-complex case, and, secondly, in providing a description of all pseudoholomorphic immersions of such surfaces in the four-sphere endowed with a "standard" Higgs field.
This paper studies the geometry of immersions into statistical manifolds. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for statistical manifold structures to be dual to each other for a non-degenerate equiaffine immersion. Then we obtain conditions for realizing an n-dimensional statistical manifold in an (n+1)-dimensional statistical manifold and its converse. Centro-affine immersion of codimension two into a dually flat statistical manifold is defined. Also we have shown that statistical manifold realized in a dually flat statistical manifold of codimension two is conformally-projectivel…
Almost para-Hermitian manifold it is manifold equipped with almost para-complex structure and compatible pseudo-metric of neutral signature. It is considered a class of immersions of almost para-Hermitian manifolds into almost para-Hermitian manifolds. Such immersions are called slant submanifolds. The concept is an analogue of the idea of slant submanifold in almost Hermitian geometry. There are classified pointwise slant surfaces of four dimensional almost para-Hermitian manifold.
In this note, we give natural extensions to cylinders and tori of a classical result due to T. Takahashi about minimal immersions into spheres. More precisely, we deal with Euclidean isometric immersions whose projections in R^N satisfy a spectral condition of their Laplacian.
We introduce polar metrics on a product manifold, which have product and warped product metrics as special cases. We prove a de Rham-type theorem characterizing Riemannian manifolds that can be locally decomposed as a product manifold endowed with a polar metric. For a product manifold endowed with a polar metric, our main result gives a complete description of all its isometric immersions into a space form whose second fundamental forms are adapetd to its product structure, in the sense that the tangent spaces to each factor are preserved by all shape operators. This is a far-reaching general…
Motivated by the beautiful theory and the rich applications of harmonic conformal immersions and conformal immersions of constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. We first derive an invariant equation for such immersions, we then try to answer the question, "what surfaces can be biharmonically conformally immersed into Euclidean 3-space?" We prove that a circular cylinder is the only CMC surface that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space; We obtain a classification of biharmonic conforma…
We consider isometric immersions in arbitrary codimension of three-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian CR manifolds into the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ and generalize in a natural way the notion of associated family. We show that the existence of such deformations turns out to be very restrictive and we give a complete classification.
If $(N^{m+p},h)$ is a Cartan-Hadamard manifold such that $Ric(h)\geq -G(r_{N}(x))$ where $G(0)\geq 1, G^{'}\geq 0$ and $G^{-1/2}\not\in L^{1}(+\infty)$ then every proper biharmonic isometric immersion $ϕ: M^{m}\rightarrow(N^{m+p},h)$ is a harmonic map.
A triharmonic map is a critical point of the 3-energy in the space of smooth maps between two Riemannian manifolds. We study a triharmonic isometric immersion into a space form of non-positively constant curvature. We show that if the domain is complete and both the 4-enegy and the L^4-norm of the tension field are finite, then such an immersion is minimal.
Several characterizations of umbilic points of submanifolds in arbitrary Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds are given. As a consequence, we obtain new characterizations of spheres in the Euclidean space and of hyperbolic spaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space. We also prove the Lorentzian version of a classical result by Cartan.
A Riemannian manifold endowed with $k\ge2$ complementary pairwise orthogonal distributions is called a Riemannian almost $k$-product manifold. In the article, for the first time, we study the following problem: find a relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic invariants of a Riemannian almost $k$-product manifold isometrically immersed in another Riemannian manifold. For such immersions, we establish an optimal inequality that includes the mixed scalar curvature and the square of the mean curvature. Although Riemannian curvature tensor belongs to intrinsic geometry, a special part called th…
The purpose of this article is to study the geometry of gradient almost Yamabe solitons immersed into warped product manifolds $I\times_{f}M^{n}$ whose potential is given by the height function from the immersion. First, we present some geometric rigidity on compact solitons due to a curvature condition on the warped product manifold. In the sequel, we investigate conditions for the existence of totally geodesic, totally umbilical and minimal solitons. Furthermore, in the scope of constant angle immersions, a classification of rotational gradient almost Yamabe soliton immersed into $\mathbb{R}…
We study curvature invariants of a sub-Riemannian manifold (i.e., a manifold with a Riemannian metric on a non-holonomic distribution) related to mutual curvature of several pairwise orthogonal subspaces of the distribution, and prove geometrical inequalities for a sub-Riemannian submanifold. As applications, inequalities are proved for submanifolds with mutually orthogonal distributions that include scalar and mutual curvature. For compact submanifolds, inequalities are obtained that are supported by known integral formulas for almost-product manifolds.
We study biminimal immersions, that is immersions which are critical points of the bienergy for normal variations with fixed energy. We give a geometrical description of the Euler-Lagrange equation associated to biminimal immersions for: i) biminimal curves in a Riemannian manifold, with particular care to the case of curves in a space form ii) isometric immersions of codimension one in a Riemannian manifold, in particular for surfaces of a three-dimensional manifold. We describe two methods to construct families of biminimal surfaces using both Riemannian and horizontally homothetic submersio…
We use a new method to give conditions for the existence of a local isometric immersion of a Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$, for a given $n$ and $k$. These equate to the (local) existence of a $k$-tuple of scalar fields on the manifold, satisfying a certain non-linear equation involving the Riemannian curvature tensor of $M$. Setting $k=1$, we proceed to recover the fundamental theorem of hypersurfaces. In the case of manifolds of positive sectional curvature and $n\geq 3$, we reduce the solvability of the Gauss and Codazzi equations to the cancelation of a set of obstructio…
The condition for the curvature of a statistical manifold to admit a kind of standard hypersurface is given. We study the statistical hypersurfces of some types of the statistical manifolds $(M, \nabla, g )$, which enable $(M, \nabla^{(α)}, g ), \forallα\in\mathbf{R}$ to admit the structure of a constant curvature.
The aim of this paper is to study Sasakian immersions of compact Sasakian manifolds into the odd-dimensional sphere equipped with the standard Sasakian structure. We obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in the Einstein and $η$-Einstein cases when the codimension of the immersion is $4$. Moreover, we exhibit infinite families of compact Sasakian $η$--Einstein manifolds which cannot admit a Sasakian immersion into any odd-dimensional sphere. Finally, we show that, after possibly performing a ${\mathcal {D}}$-homothetic deformation, a homogeneous Sasakian manifold can be Sasakian im…
We consider critical points of the functionals $Π$ and $Ψ$ defined as the global $L^2$-norm of the second fundamental form and mean curvature vector of isometric immersions of compact Riemannian manifolds into a background Riemannian manifold, respectively, as functionals over the space of deformations of the immersion. We prove gap theorems for these functionals into hyperbolic manifolds, and show that the celebrated gap theorem for minimal immersions into the sphere can be cast as a theorem about critical points of these functionals of constant mean curvature function, and whose second funda…
Since the first work of Thomas Friedrich showing that isometric immersions of Riemann surfaces are related to spinors and the Dirac equation, various works appeared generalizing this approach to more general Spin-manifolds, in particular the case of submanifolds of Spin-manifolds of constant curvature. In the present work we investigate the case of submanifolds of SpinC-manifolds of constant curvature.
In this paper we are concerned with harmonic maps and minimal immersions defined on compact Riemannian manifolds and with values in homogenous strongly harmonic manifolds. We show some results on the Morse index by varying these maps along suitable conformal vector fields. We obtain also that they are global maxima on some subspaces of the eigenspaces corresponding to the nonvanishing eigenvalues of the Laplacian operator on the target manifolds.
An isometric immersion $f: M^{n} \rightarrow \tilde M^{m}$ from an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M^{n}$ into an almost Hermitian manifold $\tilde M^{m}$ of complex dimension $m$ is called pointwise slant if its Wirtinger angles define a function defined on $M$. In this paper we establish the existence and uniqueness theorems for pointwise slant immersions of Riemannian manifolds $M^{n}$ into a complex space form $\tilde M^{n}(c)$ of constant holomorphic sectional curvature $c$.
We prove that there do not exist odd-dimensional stable compact minimal immersions in the product of two complex projective spaces. We also prove that the only stable compact minimal immersions in the product of a quaternionic projective space with any other Riemannian manifold are the products of quaternionic projective subspaces with compact stable minimal immersions of the second manifold in the Riemmanian product. These generalize similar results of the second-named author of immersions with low dimensions or codimensions to immersions with arbitrary dimensions. In addition, we prove that …
We consider submanifolds into Riemannian manifold with metallic structures. We obtain some new results for hypersurfaces in these spaces and we express the fundamental theorem of submanifolds into products spaces in terms of metallic structures. Moreover, we define new structures called complex metallic structures. We show that these structures are linked with complex structures. Then, we consider submanifolds into Riemannian manifold with such structures with a focus on invariant submanifolds and hypersurfaces. We also express in particular the fundamental theorem of submanifolds of complex s…
Using the results of \cite{P1}, we get some estimates of warping functions for isometric immersions by changing the target manifolds by some types of Riemannian manifolds: constant space forms and Hermitian symmetric spaces. And we deal with equality cases and obtain their applications. Finally, we give some open problems.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold to be locally isometrically immersed into a 3-dimensional homogeneous manifold with a 4-dimensional isometry group. The condition is expressed in terms of the metric, the second fundamental form, and data arising from an ambient Killing field. This class of 3-manifolds includes in particular the Berger spheres, the Heisenberg space Nil(3), the universal cover of the Lie group PSL(2,R) and the product spaces S^2 x R and H^2 x R. We give some applications to constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in these manifo…
An immersion of a compact manifold is tight if it admits the minimal total absolute curvature over all immersions of the manifold. A prominent result in the study of minimal total absolute curvature immersions is the theorem of Chern and Lashof, which characterizes minimal total absolute curvature immersions, and tight immersions, of spheres into a Euclidean space. In this paper we examine tight immersions of highly connected manifolds; i.e., 2k-dimensional manifolds that are (k-1)-connected by not k-connected, and characterize the immersions of highest codimension.
The aim of this paper is to study Sasakian immersions of (non-compact) complete regular Sasakian manifolds into the Heisenberg group and into $ \mathbb{B}^N\times \mathbb{R}$ equipped with their standard Sasakian structures. We obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in the $η$-Einstein case.
Using a bigraded differential complex depending on the CR and pseudohermitian structure, we give a characterization of three-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian CR-manifolds isometrically immersed in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ in terms of an integral representation of Weierstrass type. Restricting to the case of immersions in $\mathbb{R}^4$, we study harmonicity conditions for such immersions and give a complete classification of CR-pluriharmonic immersions.
A beautiful solution to the problem of isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^n$ using spinors was found by Bayard, Lawn and Roth. However to use spinors one must assume that the manifold carries a $\mbox{Spin}$-structure and, especially for complex manifolds where is more natural to consider $\mbox{Spin}^{\mathbb{C}}$-structures, this hypothesis is somewhat restrictive. In the present work we show how the above solution can be adapted to $\mbox{Spin}^{\mathbb{C}}$-structures.
We investigate isometric immersions of locally conformally Kaehler metrics into Hopf manifolds. In particular, we study Hopf-induced metrics on compact complex surfaces.
We explore the relation among volume, curvature and properness of a $m$-dimensional isometric immersion in a Riemannian manifold. We show that, when the $L^p$-norm of the mean curvature vector is bounded for some $m \leq p\leq \infty$, and the ambient manifold is a Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, properness is equivalent to the finiteness of the volume of extrinsic balls. We also relate the total absolute curvature of a surface isometrically immersed in a Riemannian manifold with its properness. Finally, we relate the curvature and the topology of a complete and non-compact $2$-Riem…
Given a compact manifold $M$ and a Riemannian manifold $N$ of bounded geometry, we consider the manifold ${\rm Imm} (M,N)$ of immersions from $M$ to $N$ and its subset ${\rm Imm}_μ(M,N)$ of those immersions with the property that the volume-form of the pull-back metric equals $μ$. We first show that the non-minimal elements of ${\rm Imm}_μ(M,N) $ form a splitting submanifold. On this submanifold we consider the Levi-Civita connection for various natural Sobolev metrics write down the geodesic equation and show local well-posedness in many cases. The question is a natural generalization of the …
In this article, we study minimal isometric immersions of Kähler manifolds into product of two real space forms. We analyse the obstruction conditions to the existence of pluriharmonic isometric immersions of a Kähler manifold into those spaces and we prove that the only ones into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^{m-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ are the minimal isometric immersions of Riemannian surfaces. Futhermore, we show that the existence of a minimal isometric immersion of a Kähler manifold $M^{2n}$ into $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{S}^{m-k}\times \mathbb{H}^k…
In this paper, we determine all conformal minimal immersions of 2-spheres in complex Grassmann manifold $G(2,N; \mathbb{C})$ with parallel second fundamental form.
This paper gives a construction for all minimal immersions $f$ of the Poincaré disc into the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{CH}^2$ which are equivariant with respect to an irreducible representation $ρ$ of a hyperbolic surface group into $PU(2,1)$. We exploit the fact that each such immersion is a twisted conformal harmonic map and therefore has a corresponding Higgs bundle. We identify the structure of these Higgs bundles and show how each is determined by properties of the map, including the induced metric and a holomorphic cubic differential on the surface. We show that the moduli space …
Given a complete hypersurface isometrically immersed in an ambient manifold, in this paper we provide a lower bound for the norm of the mean curvature vector field of the immersion assuming that: 1) The ambient manifold admits a Killing submersion with unit-length Killing vector field. 2)The projection of the image of the immersion is bounded in the base manifold. 3)The hypersurface is stochastically complete, or the immersion is proper.
We study the second fundamental form of semi-isometric CR immersions from strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds into Kähler manifolds. As an application, we give a precise condition for the CR umbilicality of real hypersurfaces, extending an well-known theorem by Webster on the nonexistence of CR umbilical points on generic real ellipsoids. As other applications, we extend the linearity theorem of Ji-Yuan for CR immersions into spheres with vanishing second fundamental form to the important case of three-dimensional manifolds, and prove the ``first gap'' theorem in the spirit of Webster, Faran, C…
We give a spinorial characterization of isometrically immersed hypersurfaces into 4-dimensional space forms and product spaces $\M^3(κ)\times\R$, in terms of the existence of particular spinor fields, called generalized Killing spinors or equivalently solutions of a Dirac equation. This generalizes to higher dimensions several recent results for surfaces by T. Friedrich, B. Morel and the two authors. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor of a generalized Killing spinor as the second fundamental form, possibly up to a tensor depending on the ambient space. As an …
A locally conformally Kaehler (LCK) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kaehler covering M, with monodromy acting on M by Kaehler homotheties. A compact LCK manifold is Vaisman if it admits a holomorphic flow acting by non-trivial homotheties on M. We prove a non-Kaehler analogue of Kodaira embedding theorem: any compact Vaisman manifold admits a natural holomorphic immersion to a Hopf manifold. As an application, we obtain that any Sasakian manifold has a contact immersion to an odd-dimensional sphere.
We consider critical points of the global squared $L^2$-norms of the second fundamental form and the mean curvature vector of isometric immersions into a fixed background Riemannian manifold under deformations of the immersion. We use the critical points of the former functional to define canonical representatives of a given integer homology class of the background manifold. We study the fibration ${\mathbb S}^3 \hookrightarrow Sp(2)\stackrel {π_{\circ}}{\rightarrow} {\mathbb S}^7$ from this point of view, showing that the fibers are the canonical generators of the $3$-integer homology of $Sp(…
The first time that the connection between isometric immersion of surfaces and solutions of the Dirac equation appeared in the literature was in the seminal paper of Thomas Friedrich in 1998. In consequence of that, several authors contributed to this topic hereafter, by obtaining the spinorial representation of Spin manifolds with arbitrary dimension and also by presenting a generalization of the Weierstrass representation map, for example. All these results assume that the manifolds and bundles involved carry a Spin structure, however this hypothesis is somehow restrictive, as for instance, …
We $δ$-approximate strictly short (e.g. constant) maps between Riemannin manifolds $f_0:X^m\to Y^N$ for $N>>m^2/2$ by $C^\infty$-smooth isometric immersions $f_δ:X^m\to Y^N$ with curvatures $curv(f_δ) < \frac {\sqrt 3}δ$, for $δ\to 0$
In this paper we study the homogeneous Kaehler manifolds (h.K.m.) which can be Kaehler immersed into finite or infinite dimensional complex space forms. On one hand we completely classify the h.K.m. which can be Kaehler immersed into a finite or infinite dimensional complex Euclidean or hyperbolic space. Moreover, we extend known results about Kaehler immersions into the finite dimensional complex projective space to the infinite dimensional setting.
Given any finite subset X of the sphere S^n, n>1, which includes no pairs of antipodal points, we explicitly construct smoothly immersed closed orientable hypersurfaces in Euclidean space R^{n+1} whose Gauss map misses X. In particular, this answers a question of M. Gromov.
In this paper, we show the rigidity of isometric immersions for a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n-1$ into the light cone of $n+1$ dimensional Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes for $n\geq 3$.
We show that if a compact, oriented 4-manifold admits a coassociative-free immersion into the Euclidean 7-space then its Euler characteristic and signature vanish. Moreover, in the spin case the Gauss map is contractible, so that the immersed manifold is parallelizable. The proof makes use of homotopy theory in particular obstruction theory. As a further application we prove a non-existence result for some infinite families of 4-manifolds that can not be addressed previously. We give concrete examples of parallelizable 4-manifolds with complicated non-simply-connected topology.
We define submersions f between manifolds M and N modelled on locally convex spaces. If the range N is finite-dimensional or a Banach manifold, then these coincide with the naive notion of a submersion. We study pre-images of submanifolds under submersions and pre-images under mappings whose differentials have dense image. An infinite-dimensional version of the constant rank theorem is provided. We also construct manifold structures on homogeneous spaces G/H of infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Some fundamentals of immersions between infinite-dimensional manifolds are developed as well.
In this paper we investigate the relationships between closed AdS 3-manifolds and Higgs bundles. We have a new way to construct AdS structures that allows us to see many of their properties explicitly, for example we can recover the very recent formula by Tholozan for the volumes. We also find applications to the theory of minimal immersions into quadrics with their natural pseudo-Riemannian structure: using the geometry of the AdS manifolds we can characterize the representations admitting equivariant minimal immersions of the Poincare disc into the Klein quadric, the Grassmannian Gr(2,4), an…
Let $Gr_k(\H^n)$ be the Grassmannian manifold of Quaternionic $k$-planes in $\H^n$ and let $γ^n_k\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ denote the Stiefel bundle of quaternionic $k$-frames in $\H^n$. Let $σ$ denote the first symplectic Pontrjagin form associated with the universal connection on $γ^n_k$. We show that every 4-form $ω$ on a smooth manifold $M$ can be induced from $σ$ by a smooth immersion $f:M\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ (for sufficiently large $k$ and $n$) provided there exists a continuous map $f_0:M\to Gr_k(\H^n)$ which pulls back the cohomology class of $σ$ onto that of $ω$.
For Lorentzian 2-manifolds $(Σ_1,g_1)$ and $(Σ_2,g_2)$ we consider the two product para-Kähler structures $(G^ε,J,Ω^ε)$ defined on the product four manifold $Σ_1\timesΣ_2$, with $ε=\pm 1$. We show that the metric $G^ε$ is locally conformally flat (resp. Einstein) if and only if the Gauss curvatures $κ_1,κ_2$ of $g_1,g_2$, respectively, are both constants satisfying $κ_1=-εκ_2$ (resp. $κ_1=εκ_2$). We give the conditions on the Gauss curvatures for which every Lagrangian surface with parallel mean curvature vector is the product $γ_1\timesγ_2\subsetΣ_1\timesΣ_2$, where $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ are curves…
We prove that compact 3-manifolds $M$ of constant curvature +1 with boundary a minimal surface are locally naturally parametrized by the conformal class of the boundary metric $γ$ in the Teichmuller space of $\partial M$, when $genus(\partial M) \geq 2$. Stronger results are obtained in the case of genus 1 boundary, giving in particular a new proof of Brendle's solution of the Lawson conjecture. The results generalize to constant mean curvature surfaces, and surfaces in flat and hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We first consider immersions on compact manifolds with uniform $L^p$-bounds on the second fundamental form and uniformly bounded volume. We show compactness in arbitrary dimension and codimension, generalizing a classical result of J. Langer. In the second part, this result is used to deduce a localized version, being more convenient for many applications, such as convergence proofs for geometric flows.
