We define submersions f between manifolds M and N modelled on locally convex spaces. If the range N is finite-dimensional or a Banach manifold, then these coincide with the naive notion of a submersion. We study pre-images of submanifolds under submersions and pre-images under mappings whose differentials have dense image. An infinite-dimensional version of the constant rank theorem is provided. We also construct manifold structures on homogeneous spaces G/H of infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Some fundamentals of immersions between infinite-dimensional manifolds are developed as well.
In this paper we obtain lower bound estimates of the spectrum of Laplace-Beltrami operator on complete submanifolds with bounded mean curvature, whose ambient space admits a Riemannian submersion over a Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature. Our main theorem generalizes many previous known estimates and applies for both immersions and submersions.
In this paper, we study biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface into and biharmonic Riemannian submersion from 3-dimensional Berger spheres. We obtain a classification of proper biharmonic isometric immersions of a surface with constant mean curvature into Berger 3-spheres. We also give a complete classification of proper biharmonic Hopf tori in Berger 3-sphere. For Riemannian submersions, we prove that a Riemannian submersion from Berger 3-spheres into a surface is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic.
J. Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and Wang Shaobo showed the first variational formula. When, k=2, it is called biharmonic maps (2-harmonic maps). There have been extensive studies in the area. In this paper, We study k-harmonic immersion into a sphere, and get the rerationship between radious and "k" of k-harmonic. And we also consider k-harmonic submersion, and genelarize Oniciuc's results. Futhermore we construct non harmonic k-harmonic by Hopf map.
Given a complete hypersurface isometrically immersed in an ambient manifold, in this paper we provide a lower bound for the norm of the mean curvature vector field of the immersion assuming that: 1) The ambient manifold admits a Killing submersion with unit-length Killing vector field. 2)The projection of the image of the immersion is bounded in the base manifold. 3)The hypersurface is stochastically complete, or the immersion is proper.
We study biminimal immersions, that is immersions which are critical points of the bienergy for normal variations with fixed energy. We give a geometrical description of the Euler-Lagrange equation associated to biminimal immersions for: i) biminimal curves in a Riemannian manifold, with particular care to the case of curves in a space form ii) isometric immersions of codimension one in a Riemannian manifold, in particular for surfaces of a three-dimensional manifold. We describe two methods to construct families of biminimal surfaces using both Riemannian and horizontally homothetic submersio…
An important theorem about biharmonic submanifolds proved independently by Chen-Ishikawa [CI] and Jiang [Ji] states that an isometric immersion of a surface into 3-dimensional Euclidean space is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic (i.e, minimal). In a later paper [CMO2], Cadeo-Monttaldo-Oniciuc shown that the theorem remains true if the target Euclidean space is replaced by a 3-dimensional hyperbolic space form. In this paper, we prove the dual results for Riemannian submersions, i.e., a Riemannian submersion from a 3-dimensional space form of non-positive curvature into a surface is biha…
We study biharmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds with finite energy and finite bi-energy. We show that if the domain is complete and the target of non-positive curvature, then such a map is harmonic. We then give applications to isometric immersions and horizontally conformal submersions.
Let g_t be a family of constant scalar curvature metrics on the total space of a Riemannian submersion obtained by shrinking the fibers of an original metric g, so that the submersion collapses as t approaches 0 (i.e., the total space converges to the base in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense). We prove that, under certain conditions, there are at least 3 unit volume constant scalar curvature metrics in the conformal class [g_t] for infinitely many t's accumulating at 0. This holds, e.g., for homogeneous metrics g_t obtained via Cheeger deformation of homogeneous fibrations with fibers of positive sc…
In this paper we study the homogeneous Kaehler manifolds (h.K.m.) which can be Kaehler immersed into finite or infinite dimensional complex space forms. On one hand we completely classify the h.K.m. which can be Kaehler immersed into a finite or infinite dimensional complex Euclidean or hyperbolic space. Moreover, we extend known results about Kaehler immersions into the finite dimensional complex projective space to the infinite dimensional setting.
The aim of this paper is to study Sasakian immersions of compact Sasakian manifolds into the odd-dimensional sphere equipped with the standard Sasakian structure. We obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in the Einstein and $η$-Einstein cases when the codimension of the immersion is $4$. Moreover, we exhibit infinite families of compact Sasakian $η$--Einstein manifolds which cannot admit a Sasakian immersion into any odd-dimensional sphere. Finally, we show that, after possibly performing a ${\mathcal {D}}$-homothetic deformation, a homogeneous Sasakian manifold can be Sasakian im…
This paper consists of two main results. In the first one we describe all Kaehler immersions of a bounded symmetric domain into the infinite dimensional complex projective space in terms of the Wallach set of the domain. In the second one we exhibit an example of complete and non-homogeneous Kaehler-Einstein metric with negative scalar curvature which admits a Kaehler immersion into the infinite dimensional complex projective space.
The study of Kähler immersions of a given real analytic Kähler manifold into a finite or infinite dimensional complex space form originates from the pioneering work of Eugenio Calabi [10]. With a stroke of genius Calabi defines a powerful tool, a special (local) potential called diastasis function, which allows him to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a neighbourhood of a point to be locally Kähler immersed into a finite or infinite dimensional complex space form. As application of its criterion, he also provides a classification of (finite dimensional) complex space forms admitti…
We show that if a compact, oriented 4-manifold admits a coassociative-free immersion into the Euclidean 7-space then its Euler characteristic and signature vanish. Moreover, in the spin case the Gauss map is contractible, so that the immersed manifold is parallelizable. The proof makes use of homotopy theory in particular obstruction theory. As a further application we prove a non-existence result for some infinite families of 4-manifolds that can not be addressed previously. We give concrete examples of parallelizable 4-manifolds with complicated non-simply-connected topology.
We define a large class of integrable nonlinear PDE's, \emph{$k$-symmetric AKS systems}, whose solutions evolve on finite dimensional subalgebras of loop algebras, and linearize on an associated algebraic curve. We prove that periodicity of the associated algebraic data implies a type of quasiperiodicity for the solution, and show that the problem of isometrically immersing $n$-dimensional Euclidean space into a sphere of dimension $2n-1$ can be addressed via this scheme, producing infinitely many real analytic solutions.
This is an overview article. In his Habilitationsvortrag, Riemann described infinite dimensional manifolds parameterizing functions and shapes of solids. This is taken as an excuse to describe convenient calculus in infinite dimensions which allows for short and transparent proofs of the main facts of the theory of manifolds of smooth mappings. Smooth manifolds of immersions, diffeomorphisms, and shapes, and weak Riemannian metrics on them are treated, culminating in the surprising fact, that geodesic distance can vanish completely for them.
We study the collapsing behavior of the Kaehler-Ricci flow on a compact Kaehler manifold X admitting a holomorphic submersion X -> S coming from its canonical class, where S is a Kaehler manifold with dim S < dim X. We show that the flow metric degenerates at exactly the rate of e^{-t} as predicted by the cohomology information, and so the fibers collapse at the optimal rate diameter ~ e^{-t/2}. Consequently, it leads to some analytic and geometric extensions to the regular case of Song-Tian's works on elliptic and Calabi-Yau fibrations. Its applicability to general Calabi-Yau fibrations with …
Let U be a real form of a complex semisimple Lie group, and tau, sigma, a pair of commuting involutions on U. This data corresponds to a reflective submanifold of a symmetric space, U/K. We define an associated integrable system, and describe how to produce solutions from curved flats. The solutions are shown to correspond to various special submanifolds, depending on which homogeneous space U/L one projects to. We apply the construction to a question which generalizes, to the context of reflective submanifolds of arbitrary symmetric spaces, the problem of isometric immersions of space forms w…
We consider smooth isotropic immersions from the 2-dimensional torus into $R^{2n}$, for $n \geq 2$. When $n = 2$ the image of such map is an immersed Lagrangian torus of $R^4$. We prove that such isotropic immersions can be approximated by arbitrarily $C^0$-close piecewise linear isotropic maps. If $n \geq 3$ the piecewise linear isotropic maps can be chosen so that they are piecewise linear isotropic immersions as well. The proofs are obtained using analogies with an infinite dimensional moment map geometry due to Donaldson. As a byproduct of these considerations, we introduce a numerical flo…
We give an infinite dimensional description of the differential K-theory of a manifold $M$. The generators are triples $[H, A, ω]$ where $H$ is a ${\bf Z}_2$-graded Hilbert bundle on $M$, $A$ is a superconnection on $H$ and $ω$ is a differential form on $M$. The relations involve eta forms. We show that the ensuing group is the differential K-group $\check{K}^0(M)$. In addition, we construct the pushforward of a finite dimensional cocycle under a proper submersion with a Riemannian structure. We give the analogous description of the odd differential K-group $\check{K}^1(M)$. Finally, we give a…
A setting for global variational geometry on Grassmann fibrations is presented. The integral variational functionals for finite dimensional immersed submanifolds are studied by means of the fundamental Lepage equivalent of a homogeneous Lagrangian, which can be regarded as a generalization of the well-known Hilbert form in the classical mechanics. Prolongations of immersions, diffeomorphisms and vector fields to the Grassmann fibrations are introduced as geometric tools for the variations of immersions. The first infinitesimal variation formula together with its consequences, the Euler-Lagrang…
In 1995, C.-L. Terng associated to each hyperpolar action on a compact symmetric space, a hyperpolar proper Fredholm (PF) action on a Hilbert space. This is a group action by an infinite dimensional path group and it acts on a Hilbert space via the gauge transformations. Those two hyperpolar actions are related through an equivariant Riemannian submersion called the parallel transport map and they have close relations to the infinite dimensional symmetric spaces called affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces. In this paper we define a linear isomorphism between Hilbert spaces and show that it is equ…
In previous work it had been shown that the remarkable homogeneous space $M= \operatorname{Diff}(S^1)/\operatorname{PSL} (2,\Bbb{R})$ sits as a complex analytic and Kähler submanifold of the Universal Teichmüller Space. There is a natural immersion $Π$ of $M$ into the infinite-dimensional version (due to Segal) of the Siegel space of period matrices. That map $Π$ is proved to be injective, equivariant, holomorphic, and Kähler-isometric (with respect to the canonical metrics). Regarding a period mapping as a map describing the variation of complex structure, we explain why $Π$ is an infinite-di…
We generalize a well-known existence and uniqueness result for equivariant harmonic maps due to Corlette, Donaldson, and Labourie to a non-compact infinite energy setting and analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the harmonic maps. When the relevant representation is Fuchsian and has hyperbolic monodromy, our construction recovers a family of harmonic maps originally studied by Wolf. We employ these maps to solve a domination problem for representations. In particular, following ideas laid out by Deroin-Tholozan, we prove that any representation from a finitely generated free group to the isomet…
In this paper, we study the Seiberg-Witten equations on a compact 3-manifold with boundary. Solutions to these equations are called monopoles. Under some simple topological assumptions, we show that the solution space of all monopoles is a Banach manifold in suitable function space topologies. We then prove that the restriction of the space of monopoles to the boundary is a submersion onto a Lagrangian submanifold of the space of connections and spinors on the boundary. Both these spaces are infinite dimensional, even modulo gauge, since no boundary conditions are specified for the Seiberg-Wit…
This is a survey of the author's book "D-manifolds and d-orbifolds: a theory of derived differential geometry", available at http://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/~joyce/dmanifolds.html We introduce a 2-category dMan of "d-manifolds", new geometric objects which are 'derived' smooth manifolds, in the sense of the 'derived algebraic geometry' of Toen and Lurie. They are a 2-category truncation of the 'derived manifolds' of Spivak (see arXiv:0810.5174, arXiv:1212.1153). The category of manifolds Man embeds in dMan as a full subcategory. We also define 2-categories dMan^b,dMan^c of "d-manifolds with bound…
We prove each embedded, constant mean curvature (CMC) surface in Euclidean space with genus zero and finitely many coplanar ends is nondegenerate: there is no nontrivial square-integrable solution to the Jacobi equation, the linearization of the CMC condition. This implies that the moduli space of such coplanar surfaces is a real-analytic manifold and that a neighborhood of these in the full CMC moduli space is itself a manifold. Nondegeneracy further implies (infinitesimal and local) rigidity in the sense that the asymptotes map is an analytic immersion on these spaces, and also that the copl…
This is a long summary of the author's book "D-manifolds and d-orbifolds: a theory of derived differential geometry", available at http://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/~joyce/dmanifolds.html . A shorter survey paper on the book, focussing on d-manifolds without boundary, is arXiv:1206.4207, and readers just wanting a general overview are advised to start there. We introduce a 2-category dMan of "d-manifolds", new geometric objects which are 'derived' smooth manifolds, in the sense of the 'derived algebraic geometry' of Toen and Lurie. They are a 2-category truncation of Spivak's 'derived manifolds' (s…
