In previous work it had been shown that the remarkable homogeneous space $M= \operatorname{Diff}(S^1)/\operatorname{PSL} (2,\Bbb{R})$ sits as a complex analytic and Kähler submanifold of the Universal Teichmüller Space. There is a natural immersion $Π$ of $M$ into the infinite-dimensional version (due to Segal) of the Siegel space of period matrices. That map $Π$ is proved to be injective, equivariant, holomorphic, and Kähler-isometric (with respect to the canonical metrics). Regarding a period mapping as a map describing the variation of complex structure, we explain why $Π$ is an infinite-dimensional period mapping.
In this paper, we introduce a new asymmetric weak metric on the Teichm{ü}ller space of a closed orientable surface with (possibly empty) punctures. This new metric, which we call the Teichm{ü}ller-Randers metric, is an asymmetric deformation of the Teichm{ü}ller metric, and is obtained by adding to the infinitesimal form of the Teichm{ü}ller metric a differential 1-form. We study basic properties of the Teichm{ü}ller-Randers metric. In the case when the 1-form is exact, any Teichm{ü}ller geodesic between two points is a unique Teichm{ü}ller--Randers geodesic between them. A particularly interes…
This survey will appear in Vol. VII of the Hendbook of Teichm{ü}ller theory (European Mathematical Society Publishing House, 2020). It is a commentary on Teichm{ü}ller's paper "Einfache Beispiele zur Wertverteilungslehre", published in 1944, whose English translation appears in that volume. Together with Teichm{ü}ller's paper, we survey the development of value distribution theory, in the period starting from Gauss's work on the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra and ending with the work of Teichm{ü}ller. We mention the foundational work of several mathematicians, including Picard, Laguerre, Poinc…
In this paper, we show that the analogue of Thurston's asymmetric metric on the Teichm{ü}ller space of flat structures on the torus is weak Finsler and we give a geometric description of its unit sphere at each point in the tangent space to Teichm{ü}ller space. We then introduce a family of weak Finsler metrics which interpolate between Thurston's asymmetric metric and the Teichm{ü}ller metric of the torus (which coincides with the the hyperbolic metric). We describe the infinitesimal unit spheres of the metrics in this family. The final version of this paper will appear in Annales Academiæ \ S…
We survey some major contributions to Riemann's moduli space and Teichm{ü}ller space. Our report has a historical character, but the stress is on the chain of mathematical ideas. We start with the introduction of Riemann surfaces, and we end with the discovery of some of the basic structures of Riemann's moduli space and Teichm{ü}ller space. We point out several facts which seem to be unknown to many algebraic geometers and analysts working in the theory. The period we are interested in starts with Riemann, in 1851, and ends in the early 1960s, when Ahlfors and Bers confirmed that Teichm{ü}lle…
This is a commentary on Teichm{ü}ller's paper Unter-suchungen{ü}ber konforme und quasikonforme Abbildungen (Inves-tigations on conformal and quasiconformal mappings) published in 1938. The paper contains fundamental results in conformal geometry , in particular a lemma, known as the Modulsatz, which insures the almost circularity of certain loci defined as complementary components of simply connected regions in the Riemann sphere, and another lemma, which we call the Main Lemma, which insures the circularity near infinity of the image of circles by a qua-siconformal map. The two results find w…
The type problem is the problem of deciding, for a simply connected Riemann surface, whether it is conformally equivalent to the complex plane or to the unit dic in the complex plane. We report on Teichm{ü}ller's results on the type problem from his two papers Eine Anwendung quasikonformer Abbildungen auf das Typenproblem (An application of quasiconformal map-pings to the type problem) (1937) and Untersuchungen{ü}ber kon-forme und quasikonforme Abbildungen (Investigations on con-formal and quasiconformal mappings) (1938). They concern simply connected Riemann surfaces defined as branched cover…
This is a mathematical commentary on Teichm{ü}ller's paper ``Bestimmung der extremalen quasikonformen Abbildungen bei geschlossenen orientierten Riemannschen Fl{ä}chen'' (Determination of extremal quasiconformal maps of closed oriented Riemann surfaces). This paper is among the last (and may be the last one) that Teichm{ü}ller wrote on the theory of moduli. It contains the proof of the so-called Teichm{ü}ller existence theorem for a closed surface of genus at least 2. For this proof, the author defines a mapping between a space of equivalence classes of marked Riemann surfaces (the Teichm{ü}ll…
Nicolas-Auguste Tissot (1824--1897) was a French mathematician and cartographer. He introduced a tool which became known among geographers under the name ``Tissot indicatrix'', and which was widely used during the first half of the twentieth century in cartography. This is a graphical representation of a field of ellipses, indicating at each point of a geographical map the distorsion of this map, both in direction and in magnitude. Each ellipse represented at a given point is the image of an infinitesimal circle in the domain of the map (generally speaking, a sphere representing the surface of…
We provide a commentary on Teichm{ü}ller's paper "Extremale quasikonforme Abbildungen und quadratische Differentiale" (Extremal quasiconformal mappings of closed oriented Riemann surfaces), Abh. Preuss. Akad. Wiss., Math.-Naturw. Kl. 1940, No.22, 1-197 (1940). The paper is quoted in several works, although it was read by very few people. Some of the results it contains were rediscovered later on and published without any reference to Teichm{ü}ller. In this commentary, we highlight the main results and the main ideas contained in that paper and we describe some of the important developments they…
This is a commentary on Teichm{ü}ller's paper Ein Verschiebungssatz der quasikonformen Abbildung (A displacement theorem of quasiconformal mapping), published in 1944. We explain in detail how Teichm{ü}ller solves the problem of finding the quasiconformal mapping from the unit disc to itself, sending 0 to a strictly negative point on the real line, holding the boundary of the disc pointwise fixed and with the smallest quasiconformal dilatation. We mention also some consequences of this extremal problem and we ask a question.
We define a universal Teichmüller space for locally quasiconformal mappings whose dilatation grows not faster than a certain rate. Paralleling the classical Teichmüller theory, we prove results of existence and uniqueness for extremal mappings in the generalized Teichmüller class. Further, we analyze the circle maps that arise.
We study the geometry of horospheres in Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures, where $3g-3+n\geq 2$. We show that every $C^1$-diffeomorphism of Teichmüller space to itself that preserves horospheres is an element of the extended mapping class group. Using the relation between horospheres and metric balls, we obtain a new proof of Royden's Theorem that the isometry group of the Teichmüller metric is the extended mapping class group.
The primary purpose of the paper is to study how a Riemann mapping depends on the corresponding Jordan curve. We are mainly concerned with those Jordan curves in the Weil-Petersson class, namely, the corresponding Riemann mappings can be quasiconformally extended to the whole plane with Beltrami coefficients being square integrable under the Poincaré metric. We endow the space of all normalized Weil-Petersson curves with a new real Hilbert manifold structure and show that it is topologically equivalent to the standard complex Hilbert manifold structure.
By the Riemann-mapping theorem, one can bijectively map the interior of an $n$-gon $P$ to that of another $n$-gon $Q$ conformally. However, (the boundary extension of) this mapping need not necessarily map the vertices of $P$ to those $Q$. In this case, one wants to find the ``best" mapping between these polygons, i.e., one that minimizes the maximum angle distortion (the dilatation) over \textit{all} points in $P$. From complex analysis such maps are known to exist and are unique. They are called extremal quasiconformal maps, or Teichmüller maps. Although there are many efficient ways to comp…
We consider Riemann surfaces $Σ$ with $n$ borders homeomorphic to $\mathbb{S}^1$ and no handles. Using generalized Grunsky operators, we define a period mapping from the infinite-dimensional Teichmüller space of surfaces of this type into the unit ball in the linear space of operators on an $n$-fold direct sum of Bergman spaces of the disk. We show that this period mapping is holomorphic and injective.
The origin of quasiconformal mappings, like that of conformal mappings, can be traced back to old cartography where the basic problem was the search for mappings from the sphere onto the plane with minimal deviation from conformality, subject to certain conditions which were made precise. In this paper, we survey the development of cartography, highlighting the main ideas that are related to quasiconformality. Some of these ideas were completely ignored in the previous historical surveys on quasiconformal mappings. We then survey early quasiconformal theory in the works of Grötzsch, Lavrentief…
We give a real-analytic section for the Teichmüller projection onto the VMO-Teichmüller space by using the variant of Beurling-Ahlfors extension by heat kernel introduced by Fefferman, Kenig and Pipher in 1991. Based on this result, we prove that the VMO-Teichmüller space can be endowed with a real Banach manifold structure that is real-analytically equivalent to its complex Banach manifold structure. We also obtain that the VMO-Teichmüller space admits a real-analytic contraction mapping.
The exponential Teichmüller spaces $E_p$, $0\leq p \leq \infty$, interpolate between the classical Teichmüller space ($p=\infty$) and the space of harmonic diffeomorphisms $(p=0)$. In this article we prove the existence of non-variational critical points for the associated functional: mappings $f$ of the disk whose distortion is $p$-exponentially integrable, $0<p<\infty$, yet for {\em any} diffeomorphism $g(z)$ of $\ID$ with $g|\partial\ID=identity$ and $g\neq identity$ we have $f\circ g$ is not of $p$-exponentially integrable distortion.
Over the past two decades the theory of the Weil-Petersson metric has been extended to general Teichmüller spaces of infinite type, including for example the universal Teichmüller space. In this paper we give a survey of the main results in the Weil-Petersson geometry of infinite-dimensional Teichmüller spaces. This includes the rigorous definition of complex Hilbert manifold structures, Kähler geometry and global analysis, and generalizations of the period mapping. We also discuss the motivations of the theory in representation theory and physics beginning in the 1980s. Some examples of the a…
Let $\mathcal{T}_K(D)$ be the class of $K$-quasiconformal automorphisms of a domain $D\subsetneq \mathbb{R}^n$ with identity boundary values. Teichmüller's problem is to determine how far a given point $x\in D$ can be mapped under a mapping $f\in \mathcal{T}_K(D)$. We estimate this distance between $x$ and $f(x)$ from the above by using two different metrics, the distance ratio metric and the quasihyperbolic metric. We study Teichmüller's problem for Gromov hyperbolic domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with identity values at the boundary of infinity. As applications, we obtain results on Teichmüller's…
In this paper, we give a framework for the study of the extremal length geometry of Teichmüller space after S. Kerckhoff, F. Gardiner and H. Masur. There is a natural compactification using extremal length geometry introduced by Gardiner and Masur. The compactification is realized in a certain projective space. We develop the extremal length geometry in the cone which is defined as the inverse image of the compactification via the quotient mapping. The compactification is identified with a subset of the cone by taking an appropriate lift. The cone contains canonically the space of measured fol…

This is the first paper in a series of investigation of the pluripotential theory on Teichmüller space. The main purpose of this paper is to give an alternative approach to the Krushkal formula of the pluricomplex Green function on Teichmüller space. We also show that Teichmüller space carries a natural stratified structure of real-analytic submanifolds defined from the structure of singularities of the initial differentials of the Teichmüller mappings from a given point. We will also give a description of the Levi form of the pluricomplex Green function using the Thurston symplectic form via …
The moduli space of lattices of $\mathbb{C}$ is a Riemann surface of finite hyperbolic area with the square lattice as an origin. We select a lattice from the induced uniform distribution and calculate the statistics of the Teichmüller distance to the origin. This in turn identifies distribution of the distance in Teichmüller space to the central "square" punctured torus in the moduli space of punctured tori. There are singularities in this p.d.f. arising from the topology of the moduli space. We also consider the statistics of the distance in Teichmüller space to the rectangular punctured tor…
For a given ring (domain) in $\overline{\mathbb{R}}^n$ we discuss whether its boundary components can be separated by an annular ring with modulus nearly equal to that of the given ring. In particular, we show that, for all $n\ge 3\,,$ the standard definition of uniformly perfect sets in terms of Euclidean metric is equivalent to the boundedness of moduli of separating rings. We also establish separation theorems for a "half" of a ring. As applications of those results, we will prove boundary Hölder continuity of quasiconformal mappings of the ball or the half space in $\mathbb{R}^n.$
Teichmüller's classical mapping problem for plane domains concerns finding a lower bound for the maximal dilatation of a quasiconformal homeomorphism which holds the boundary pointwise fixed, maps the domain onto itself, and maps a given point of the domain to another given point of the domain. For a domain $D \subset {\mathbb R}^n\,,n\ge 2\,,$ we consider the class of all $K$- quasiconformal maps of $D$ onto itself with identity boundary values and Teichmüller's problem in this context. Given a map $f$ of this class and a point $x\in D\,,$ we show that the maximal dilatation of $f$ has a lowe…
We study minimisers of the $p$-conformal energy functionals, \[ \mathsf{E}_p(f):=\int_\ID \IK^p(z,f)\,dz,\quad f|_\IS=f_0|_\IS, \] defined for self mappings $f:\ID\to\ID$ with finite distortion and prescribed boundary values $f_0$. Here \[ \IK(z,f) = \frac{\|Df(z)\|^2}{J(z,f)} = \frac{1+|μ_f(z)|^2}{1-|μ_f(z)|^2}\] is the pointwise distortion functional and $μ_f(z)$ is the Beltrami coefficient of $f$. We show that for quasisymmetric boundary data the limiting regimes $p\to\infty$ recover the classical Teichmüller theory of extremal quasiconformal mappings (in part a result of Ahlfors), and for …
We construct a metric simplicial complex which is an almost isometric model of the moduli space M(S) of Riemann surfaces. We then use this model to compute the "tangent cone at infinity" of M(S): it is the topological cone on the quotient of the complex of curves C(S) by the mapping class group of S, endowed with an explicitly described metric. The main ingredient is Minsky's product regions theorem.
We present a new and simple proof of Teichmüller-Wittich-Belinskii's and Gutlyanskii-Martio's theorems on the conformality of quasiconformal mappings at a given point. Known proofs gave separate estimates for the radial and angular variations, but our proof unifies them using Grötzsch-type inequality for the variation of cross-ratio of four points on the Riemann sphere. We also give a sufficient condition for $C^{1+α}$-conformality
Teichmüller's problem from 1944 is this: Given $x\in [0,1)$ find and describe the extremal quasiconformal map $f:\ID\to\ID$, $f|\partial \ID=identity$ and $f(0)=-x\leq 0$. We consider this problem in the setting of minimisers of $L^p$-mean distortion. The classical result is that there is an extremal map of Teichmüller type with associated holomorphic quadratic differential having a pole of order one at $x$, if $x\neq 0$. For the $L^p$-norm, when $p=1$ it is known that there can be no locally quasiconformal minimiser unless $x=0$. Here we show that for $1\leq p<\infty$ there is a minimiser in …
