A closed manifold is called a biquotient if it is diffeomorphic to K\G/H for some compact Lie group G with closed subgroups K and H such that K acts freely on G/H. Biquotients are a major source of examples of Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature. We prove several classification results for biquotients:
(1) We classify all simply connected rational homology spheres which are diffeomorphic to biquotients. For example, the Gromoll-Meyer exotic sphere is the only exotic sphere of any dimension which is a biquotient.
(2) We determine exactly which Cheeger manifolds, the connected sums of two rank-one symmetric spaces, are diffeomorphic to biquotients. For example, CP^2 # CP^2 is a biquotient, but CP^4 # HP^2 is not.
(3) There are only finitely many diffeomorphism classes of 2-connected biquotients in each dimension.
We classify simply connected rationally elliptic manifolds of dimension five and those of dimension six with small Betti numbers from the point of view of their rational cohomology structure. We also prove that a geometrically formal rationally elliptic six dimensional manifold, whose second Betti number is two, is rational cohomology $S^2\times {\mathbb C}P^2$. An infinite family of six-dimensional simply connected biquotients whose second Betti number is three, different from Totaro's biquotients, is considered and it is proved that none of biquotient from this family is geometrically formal…
As a means to better understanding manifolds with positive curvature, there has been much recent interest in the study of non-negatively curved manifolds which contain either a point or an open dense set of points at which all 2-planes have positive curvature. We study infinite families of biquotients defined by Eschenburg and Bazaikin from this viewpoint, together with torus quotients of $S^3 \x S^3$.
We characterise simply-connected biquotients which potentially admit metrics of holonomy G_2. We prove that there are at most three real homotopy types of rationally elliptic such manifolds---all of them being formal. In the course of this examination we classify rationally elliptic homotopy types and characterise 7-dimensional simply-connected biquotients from a rational point of view. Moreover, we also investigate further manifolds of special holonomy, like manifolds of holonomy Spin(7) or Sp(n)\Sp(1) in special situations provided by rational ellipticity or geometric formality.
Let $M^n$, $n \in \{4,5,6\}$, be a compact, simply connected $n$-manifold which admits some Riemannian metric with non-negative curvature and an isometry group of maximal possible rank. Then any smooth, effective action on $M^n$ by a torus $T^{n-2}$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an isometric action on a normal biquotient. Furthermore, it follows that any effective, isometric circle action on a compact, simply connected, non-negatively curved four-dimensional manifold is equivariantly diffeomorphic to an effective, isometric action on a normal biquotient.
In this paper, we consider Cheeger's constant and the first eigenvalue of the nonlinear Laplacian on closed Finsler manifolds. Being based on these, we establish Cheeger's inequality and Buser's inequality for closed Finsler manifolds.
The known manifolds of positive sectional curvature are either homogeneous spaces or biquotients, i.e. quotients of a compact Lie group by a group acting on the left and right simultaneously. The full isometry group of the homogeneous metrics of positive curvature were determined by K.Shankar. Here we determine the isometry group of some of the biquotients due to Eschenburg and Bazaikin. As an application we obtain, as in the homogeneous case, more counterexamples to the Chern conjecture, which states that an abelian subgroup of the fundamental group of a positively curved manifold is cyclic.
In this paper, we mainly establish a Cheeger type finiteness theorem for Berwald manifolds. In order to do this, we study the injectivity radius and the convex radius of a Finsler manifold. A Cheeger type estimate on injectivity radii for Finsler manifolds is given and the existence of the center of mass of a Berwald manifold is proved.
In this paper, we extend Su-Zhang's Cheeger-Mueller type theorem for symmetric bilinear torsions to manifolds with boundary in the case that the Riemannian metric and the non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form are of product structure near the boundary. Our result also extends Bruening-Ma's Cheeger-Mueller type theorem for Ray-Singer metric on manifolds with boundary to symmetric bilinear torsions in product case. We also compare it with the Ray-Singer analytic torsion on manifolds with boundary.
We generalize a Cheeger-Müller type theorem for flat, unitary bundles on infinite covering spaces over manifolds-with-boundary, proven by Burghelea, Friedlander and Kappeller arXiv:dg-ga/9510010 [math.DG]. Employing recent anomaly results by Brüning, Ma and Zhang, we prove an analogous statement for a general flat bundle that is only required to have a unimodular restriction to the boundary.
Let $(\mathcal{M},g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $N\geq 2$. We prove the existence of a family $(Ω_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon\in (0,\varepsilon_0)}$ of self-Cheeger sets in $(\mathcal{M},g)$ . The domains $Ω_\varepsilon\subset\mathcal{M}$ are perturbations of geodesic balls of radius $\varepsilon$ centered at $p \in \mathcal{M}$, and in particular, if $p_0$ is a non-degenerate critical point of the scalar curvature of $g$, then the family $(\partial Ω_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon \in (0,\varepsilon_0)}$ constitutes a smooth foliation of a neighborhood of $p_0$.

In this paper we study the relationship of hyperbolicity and (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in the context of Riemannian manifolds and graphs. We characterize the hyperbolic manifolds and graphs (with bounded local geometry) verifying this isoperimetric inequality, in terms of their Gromov boundary. Furthermore, we characterize the trees with isoperimetric inequality (without any hypothesis). As an application of our results, we obtain the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity for these Riemannian manifolds and graphs, and that the Martin boundary is homeomorphic to the Gromov b…
Let (M, g) be an (n + 1)-dimensional asymptotically locally hyperbolic (ALH) manifold with a conformal compactification whose conformal infinity is ($\partial$M, [$γ$]). We will first observe that Ch(M, g) $\le$ n, where Ch(M, g) is the Cheeger constant of M. We then prove that, if the Ricci curvature of M is bounded from below by --n and its scalar curvature approaches --n(n+1) fast enough at infinity, then Ch(M, g) = n if and only Y($\partial$M, [$γ$]) $\ge$ 0, where Y($\partial$M, [$γ$]) denotes the Yamabe invariant of the conformal infinity. This gives an answer to a question raised by J. …
Using deep analytic methods, Cheeger and Gromov showed that for any smooth (4k-1)-manifold there is a universal bound for the von Neumann $L^2$ $ρ$-invariants associated to arbitrary regular covers. We present a proof of the existence of a universal bound for topological (4k-1)-manifolds, using $L^2$-signatures of bounding 4k-manifolds. For 3-manifolds, we give explicit linear universal bounds in terms of triangulations, Heegaard splittings, and surgery descriptions respectively. We show that our explicit bounds are asymptotically optimal. As an application, we give new lower bounds of the com…
The authors examine topological properties of the 7-dimensional Eschenburg biquotients diag(z^k1,z^k2,z^k3)\SU(3)/diag(z^l1,z^l2,z^l3). A subfamily of these spaces carry a 3-Sasakian metric. The authors show that among this subfamily there exist many 3-Sasakian spaces which are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. In addition, they construct a pair of 3-Sasakian spaces which are diffeomorphic, thus giving the first example of a manifold which carries two non-isometric 3-Sasakian metrics. This answers an open question of C. Boyer and K.Galicki. Among the general family, the authors construct man…
We investigate conformality of the differential of a mapping between Riemannian manifolds if the tangent bundles are equipped with a generalized metric of Cheeger-Gromoll type.
We study the spectrum and heat kernel of the Hodge Laplacian with coefficients in a flat bundle on a closed manifold degenerating to a manifold with wedge singularities. Provided the Hodge Laplacians in the fibers of the wedge have an appropriate spectral gap, we give uniform constructions of the resolvent and heat kernel on suitable manifolds with corners. When the wedge manifold and the base of the wedge are odd dimensional, this is used to obtain a Cheeger-Müller theorem relating analytic torsion with the Reidemeister torsion of the natural compactification by a manifold with boundary.
In this paper we study a Riemanian metric on the tangent bundle $T(M)$ of a Riemannian manifold $M$ which generalizes the Cheeger Gromoll metric and a compatible almost complex structure which together with the metric confers to $T(M)$ a structure of locally conformal almost Kählerian manifold. We found conditions under which $T(M)$ is almost Kählerian, locally conformal Kählerian or Kählerian or when $T(M)$ has constant sectional curvature or constant scalar curvature.
We prove equality between the renormalized Ray-Singer analytic torsion and the intersection R-torsion on a Witt-manifold with cusps, up to an error term determined explicitly by the Betti numbers of the cross section of the cusp and the intersection R-torsion of a model cone. In the first step of the proof we compute explicitly the renormalized Ray-Singer analytic torsion of a model cusp in general dimension and without the Witt-condition. In the second step we establish a gluing formula for renormalized Ray-Singer analytic torsion on a general class of non-compact manifolds in any dimension t…
We investigate horizontal conformality of a differential of a map between Riemannian manifolds where the tangent bundles are equipped with Cheeger--Gromoll type metrics. As a corollary, we characterize the differential of a map as a harmonic morphism.
Let $(M,g)$ be an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold and $T^{*}M$ be its cotangent bundle equipped with a Riemannian metric of Cheeger Gromoll type which rescale the horizontal part by a nonzero differentiable function. The main purpose of the present paper is to discuss curvature properties of $T^{*}M$ and construct almost paracomplex Norden structures on $T^{*}M$. We investigate conditions for these structures to be para-Kähler (paraholomorphic) and quasi-Kähler. Also, some properties of almost paracomplex Norden structures in context of almost product Riemannian manifolds are presented.
For a sequence $\{(M_i, g_i, x_i)\}$ of pointed Riemannian manifolds with boundary, the sequence $\{(M_i,\tilde g_i,x_i)\}$ is its conformal satellite if the metric $\tilde g_i$ is conformal to $g_i$, that is, $\tilde g_i=u^{\frac{4}{n-2}}_ig_i$. Assuming the manifolds $(M_i,g_i,x_i)$ have uniformly bounded geometry, we show that both sequences have smoothly Cheeger-Gromov convergent subsequences provided the conformal factors $u_i$ are principal eigenfunctions of an appropriate elliptic operator. Part of our result is a Cheeger-Gromov compactness for manifolds with boundary. We use stable ver…
We construct a metrical framed structure on the tensor bundle of a Riemannian manifold equipped with a Cheeger-Gromoll type metric and by restricting this structure to the tensor sphere bundle, we obtain an almost metrical paracontact structure on the tensor sphere bundle. Moreover, we show that the tensor sphere bundles endowed with the induced metric are never space forms.
We examine several classes of manifolds which have the same cohomology ring as an Eschenburg space (a family of biquotients which is a main source of manifolds with positive curvature). One family are the 3-sphere bundles over CP^2. Another are the circle bundles over a base, which itself is one of the family of CP^1 bundles over CP^2. We classify such manifolds up to diffeomorphism using the Kreck-Stolz invariants. Comparisons of the invariants is then used to find many diffeomorphism of the total space of these bundles with positively curved Eschenburg spaces. The total space of each bundle …
We prove a new generalization of the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem where we obtain a warped product splitting under the existence of a line. The curvature condition in our splitting is a curvature dimension inequality of the form $CD(0,1)$. Even though we have to allow warping in our splitting, we are able to recover topological applications. In particular, for a smooth compact Riemannian manifold admitting a density which is $CD(0,1)$, we show that the fundamental group of $M$ is the fundamental group of a compact manifold with nonnegative sectional curvature. If the space is also locally…
We give a brief literature review of the isoperimetric problem and discuss its relationship with the Cheeger constant of Riemannian $n$-manifolds. For some non-compact, finite area 2-manifolds, we prove the existence and regularity of subsets whose isoperimetric ratio is equal to the Cheeger constant. To do this, we use results of Hass-Morgan for the isoperimetric problem of these manifolds. We also give an example of a finite area 2-manifold where no such subset exists. Using work of Adams-Morgan, we classify all such subsets of geometrically finite hyperbolic surfaces where such subsets alwa…
We prove short time existence for the Ricci flow on open manifolds of nonnegative complex sectional curvature. We do not require upper curvature bounds. By considering the doubling of convex sets contained in a Cheeger-Gromoll convex exhaustion and solving the singular initial value problem for the Ricci flow on these closed manifolds, we obtain a sequence of closed solutions of the Ricci flow with nonnegative complex sectional curvature which subconverge to a solution of the Ricci flow on the open manifold. Furthermore, we find an optimal volume growth condition which guarantees long time exi…
In [Cheeger-Tian 2005], Cheeger-Tian proved an $ε$-regularity theorem for $4$-dimensional Einstein manifolds without volume assumption. They conjectured that similar results should hold for critical metrics with constant scalar curvature, shrinking Ricci solitons, Ricci flows in $4$-dimensional manifolds and higher dimensional Einstein manifolds. In this paper we consider all these problems. First, we construct counterexamples to the conjecture for $4$-dimensional critical metrics and counterexamples to the conjecture for higher dimensional Einstein manifolds. For $4$-dimensional shrinking Ric…
We discuss the behavior of $(λ_{1. p}(M))^{1/p}$ with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff topology and the variable $p$, where $λ_{1, p}(M)$ is the first positive eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$. Applications include new estimates for the first eigenvalues of the $p$-Laplacian on Riemannian manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds, and isoperimetric inequalities on Gromov-Hausdorff limit spaces. We also establish a new Lichnerowicz-Obata type theorem.
We generalize a theorem of Bismut-Zhang, which extends the Cheeger-Mueller theorem on Ray-Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case where the flat vector bundle over a closed manifold carries a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form. As a consequence, we prove the Burghelea-Haller conjecture which gives an analytic interpretation of the Turaev torsion. It thus also provides an analytic interpretation of (not merely the absolute value of) the Alexander polynomial in knot theory.
We extend several Cheeger-type isoperimetric bounds for convex sets in Euclidean space, due to Bobkov and Kannan-Lovász-Simonovits, to Riemannian manifolds having non-negative Ricci curvature. In order to extend Bobkov's bound, we require in addition an upper bound on the sectional curvature of the space, which permits us to use comparison tools in Cartan-Alexandrov-Toponogov (or CAT) spaces. Along the way, we also quantitatively improve our previous result that weak concentration assumptions imply a Cheeger-type isoperimetric bound, to a sharp bound with respect to all parameters.
Torsion invariants for manifolds which are not simply connected were introduced by K. Reidemeister and generalized to higher dimensions by W. Franz. The Reidemeister torsion, was the first invariant of manifolds which was not a homotopy invariant. The analytic counterpart of the combinatorial Reidemeister torsion was introduced by D. B. Ray and I. M. Singer in form of a weighted product of zeta-regularized determinants of Laplace operators on differential forms. The celebrated Cheeger-Mueller Theorem, established independently by J. Cheeger and W. Mueller, proved equality between the analytic …
This paper studies the interaction of $π_1(M)$ for a $C^\infty$ manifold $M$ with Bott's original obstruction to integrability, and with differential geometric invariants such as Godbillon-Vey and Cheeger-Simons invariants of a foliation. We prove that the ring of higher Pontrjagin and higher Chern classes of an integrable subbundle $E$ of the tangent bundle of a manifold vanishes above dimension $2k$ where $k=dim(TM/E)$, and where the higher Pontrjagin and Chern rings are rings generated by $i^*y \cup p_j(TM/E)$ and by $i^*y \cup c_j(TM/E)$ respectively, with $p_j$ the $j$-th Pontrjagin class…
We provide a topological procedure to obtain geometric realizations of both classical and `exotic' $G$-manifolds, such as spheres, bundles over spheres and Kervaire manifolds. As an application, we apply the process known as Cheeger deformations to produce new metrics of both positive Ricci and almost non-negative curvature on such objects.
For a given Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)$ which is near standard sphere $(S^n, g_{round})$ in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology and satisfies $Rc \geq n-1$, it is known by Cheeger-Colding theory that $M$ is diffeomorphic to $S^n$. A diffeomorphism $φ: M \to S^n$ was constructed by Cheeger and Colding using Reifenberg method. In this note, we show that a desired diffeomorphism can be constructed canonically. Let $\{f_i\}_{i=1}^{n+1}$ be the first $(n+1)$-eigenfunctions of $(M, g)$ and $f=(f_1, f_2, \cdots, f_{n+1})$. Then the map $\tilde{f}=\frac{f}{|f|}: M \to S^n$ provides a diffeomorphism, and …
In this paper, we show that for any closed 4-dimensional simply-connected Riemannian manifold $M$ with Ricci curvature $|Ric|\leq 3$, volume $vol(M)>v>0$, and diameter $diam(M)<D$, the length of a shortest closed geodesic is bounded by a function $F(v,D)$ which only depends on $v$ and $D$. The proofs of our result are based on a recent theorem of diffeomorphism finiteness of the manifolds satisfying the above conditions proven by J. Cheeger and A. Naber.
By Cheeger-Colding's almost splitting theorem, if a domain in a Ricci flat manifold is pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff close to a lower dimensional Euclidean domain, then there is a harmonic almost splitting map. We show that any eigenfunction of the Laplace operator is almost constant along the fibers of the almost splitting map, in the $L^2$-average sense. This generalizes an estimate of Fukaya in the case of collapsing with bounded diameter and sectional curvature.
We provide a proof for an inequality between volume and L2-Betti numbers of aspherical manifolds for which Gromov outlined a strategy based on general ideas of Connes. The implementation of that strategy involves measured equivalence relations, Gaboriau's theory of L2-Betti numbers of R-simplicial complexes, and other themes of measurable group theory. Further, we prove new vanishing theorems for L2-Betti numbers that generalize a classical result of Cheeger and Gromov. As one of the corollaries, we obtain a gap theorem which implies vanishing of L2-Betti numbers of an aspherical manifold when…
In this paper we study the relationship of hyperbolicity and (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in the context of Riemannian manifolds and graphs. We characterize the hyperbolic manifolds and graphs (with bounded local geometry) verifying this isoperimetric inequality, in terms of their Gromov boundary improving similar results from a previous work. In particular, we prove that having a pole is a necessary condition and, therefore, it can be removed as hypothesis.
We prove that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a family of (possibly infinite sheeted) coverings with the property that the Cheeger constants in the family tend to zero. This is used to show that, if in addition the fundamental group of the manifold is LERF, then it satisfies the Lubotzky-Sarnak conjecture.
We show that noncompact simply connected harmonic manifolds with volume density $Θ_{p}(r) =\sinh ^{n-1} r$ is isometric to the real hyperbolic space and noncompact simply connected Kähler harmonic manifold with volume density $Θ_{p}(r) =\sinh ^{2n-1} r \cosh r$ is isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. A similar result is also proved for Quaternionic Kähler manifolds. Using our methods we get an alternative proof, without appealing to the powerful Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem, of the fact that every Ricci flat harmonic manifold is isometric to the euclidean space. Finally a rigidity r…
In this paper we study collapsing sequences M_{i}-> X of Riemannian manifolds with curvature bounded or bounded away from a controlled subset. We introduce a structure over X which in an appropriate sense is dual to the N-structure of Cheeger, Fukaya and Gromov. As opposed to the N-structure, which live over the M_{i} themselves, this structure lives over X and allows for a convenient notion of global convergence as well as the appropriate background structure for doing analysis on X. This structure is new even in the case of uniformly bounded curvature and as an application we give a generali…
Let M be a complete non-compact connected Riemannian n-dimensional manifold. We first prove that, for any fixed point p in M, the radial Ricci curvature of M at p is bounded from below by the radial curvature function of some non-compact n-dimensional model. Moreover, we then prove, without the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff convergence theory, that, if model volume growth is sufficiently close to 1, then M is diffeomorphic to Euclidean n-dimensional space. Hence, our main theorem has various advantages of the Cheeger-Colding diffeomorphism theorem via the Euclidean volume growth. Our main theorem a…
