We consider the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative wave equation $$ \bx v+\fracμ{1+t}v_t=0, \qquad x\in\R^n,\quad t\ge 0, $$ parameterized by $μ>0$, and prove a representation theorem for its solution using the theory of special functions.
This representation is used to obtain $L_p$--$L_q$ estimates for the solution and for the energy operator corresponding to this Cauchy problem.
Especially for the $L_2$ energy estimate we determine the part of the phase sp which is responsible for the decay rate. It will be shown that the situation d strongly on the value of $μ$ and that $μ=2$ is critical.
We consider mildly degenerate Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter and a weak dissipation term. We prove the existence of global solutions when the parameter is small with respect to the size of initial data. Then we provide global-in-time error estimates on the difference between the solution of our problem and the solution of the corresponding first order problem.
We prove the global existence of small data solution in all space dimension for weakly coupled systems of semi-linear effectively damped wave, with different time-dependent coefficients in the dissipation terms. Moreover, nonlinearity terms $ f(t,u) $ and $ g(t,v) $ satisfying some properties of the parabolic equation. We study the problem in several classes of regularity.
In this paper we prove the local well-posedness and global well-posedness with small initial data of the strong solution to the reduced $3D$ primitive geostrophic adjustment model with weak dissipation. The term reduced model stems from the fact that the relevant physical quantities depends only on two spatial variables. The additional weak dissipation helps us overcome the ill-posedness of original model. We also prove the global well-posedness of the strong solution to the Voigt $α$-regularization of this model, and establish the convergence of the strong solution of the Voigt $α$-regularize…
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a degenerate quasilinear Kirchhoff equation with weak dissipation. This means that the coefficient of the dissipative term tends to zero when t tends to +infinity. We prove that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution for suitable values of the parameters. We also prove that the solution decays to zero, as t tends to +infinity, with the same rate of the solution of the limit problem of parabolic type.
We consider the evolution of weak vanishing viscosity solutions to the critically dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Due to the possible non-uniqueness of solutions, we rephrase the problem as a set-valued dynamical system and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal Sobolev regularity. To achieve this, we derive a new Sobolev estimate involving Hölder norms, which complement the existing estimates based on commutator analysis.
We are concerned with the existence of global in time solutions to the Cauchy problem for semi-linear Klein-Gordon equations with memory-type dissipation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In the first place, we consider the linearized equation: applying the energy method in the Fourier space, we derive the point-wise estimate of a solution in the Fourier space. However, we found that the function in energy estimates has a mistake.
We consider Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative, and a dissipative term whose coefficient may tend to 0 as t -> + infinity (weak dissipation). In this note we present some recent results concerning existence of global solutions, and their asymptotic behavior both as t -> + infinity and as epsilon -> 0. Since the limit equation is of parabolic type, this is usually referred to as a hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem. We show in particular that the equation exhibits hyperbolic or parabolic behavior depending on the value…
We consider a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, corresponding to a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a small dissipation term. We study an asymptotic regime for long-wave perturbations of constant maps of modulus one. We show that such solutions never vanish and we derive a damped wave dynamics for the perturbation.
This article examines the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the d-dimensional micropolar equations ($d=2$ or $d=3$) with general fractional dissipation $(-Δ)^αu$ and $(-Δ)^βw$. The micropolar equations with standard Laplacian dissipation model fluids with microstructure. The generalization to include fractional dissipation allows simultaneous study of a family of equations and is relevant in some physical circumstances. We establish that, when $α\ge \frac12$ and $β\ge \frac12$, any initial data $(u_0, w_0)$ in the critical Besov space $u_0\in B^{1+\frac{d}{2}-2α}_{2,1}(\mathbb R^d)…
In this paper we consider a wave model with non-effective mass and dissipation terms and provide asymptotic descriptions of its representation of solutions. In particular we conclude sharp estimates for a corresponding energy and estimates of dispersive type.
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a nondegenerate quasilinear equation of Kirchhoff type with weak dissipation. This means that the dissipative term is multiplied by a coefficient b(t) which tends to 0 as t tends to +infinity. The case where b(t) behaves like (1+t)^{-p} with p<1 has recently been considered. The result is that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution, and the difference between solutions of the hyperbolic problem and the corresponding solutions of the parabolic problem converges to zero both as t tends to +infinity and as epsilon…
The Ostrovsky-Hunter equation provides a model for small-amplitude long waves in a rotating fluid of finite depth. It is a nonlinear evolution equation. In this paper we study the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to this equation in presence of some weak dissipation effects.
We study the mixing effect for a generalized Keller-Segel system with degenerate dissipation and advection by a weakly mixing. Here the attractive operator has weak singularity, namely, the negative derivative appears in the nonlinear term by singular integral. Without advection, the solution of equation blows up in finite time. We show that the global well-posedness of solution with large advection. Since dissipation term degenerate into the damping, the enhanced dissipation effect of mixing no longer occurs, we prove that the mixing effect can weak the influence of nonlinear term. In this ca…
This paper examines the uniqueness of weak solutions to the d-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with the fractional dissipation $(-Δ)^αu$ and without the magnetic diffusion. Important progress has been made on the standard Laplacian dissipation case $α=1$. This paper discovers that there are new phenomena with the case $α<1$. The approach for $α=1$ can not be directly extended to $α<1$. We establish that, for $α<1$, any initial data $(u_0, b_0)$ in the inhomogeneous Besov space $B^σ_{2,\infty}(\mathbb R^d)$ with $σ> 1+\frac{d}{2}-α$ leads to a unique local solution. For the case …
In this paper, we study the large time behavior of a class of wave equation with a nonlinear dissipation in non-cylindrical domains. The result we obtained here relaxes the conditions for the nonlinear term coefficients (in precise, that is $β(t)|u|^ρu$) in \cite{alb} and \cite{ha} (which require $β(t)$ to be a constant or $β(t)$ to be decreasing with time $t$) and has less restriction for the defined regions.
In this paper, we study the blow-up of solutions for semilinear wave equations with scale-invariant dissipation and mass in the case in which the model is somehow 'wave-like'. A Strauss type critical exponent is determined as the upper bound for the exponent in the nonlinearity in the main theorems. Two blow-up results are obtained for the sub-critical case and for the critical case, respectively. In both cases, an upper bound lifespan estimate is given.
In this paper we consider a singular wave equation with distributional and more singular non-distributional coefficients and develop tools and techniques for the phase-space analysis of such problems. In particular we provide a detailed analysis for the interaction of singularities of solutions with strong singularities of the coefficient in a model problem of recent interest.
We prove nonuniqueness of weak solutions to multi-dimensional generalisation of the Aw-Rascle model of vehicular traffic. Our generalisation includes the velocity offset in a form of gradient of density function, which results in a dissipation effect, similar to viscous dissipation in the compressible viscous fluid models. We show that despite this dissipation, the extension of the method of convex integration can be applied to generate infinitely many weak solutions connecting arbitrary initial and final states. We also show that for certain choice of data, ill posedness holds in the class of…
In the present paper, we study small data blow-up of the semi-linear wave equation with a scattering dissipation term and a time-dependent mass term from the aspect of wave-like behavior. The Strauss type critical exponent is determined and blow-up results are obtained to both sub-critical and critical cases with corresponding upper bound lifespan estimates. For the sub-critical case, our argument does not rely on the sign condition of dissipation and mass, which gives the extension of the result in \cite{Lai-Sch-Taka18}. Moreover, we show the blow-up result for the critical case which is a ne…
We consider the electron magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with static background ion flow. A special situation of $B(x,y,t)=\nabla\times (a\vec e_z)+b \vec e_z$ with scalar-valued functions $a(x,y,t)$ and $b(x,y,t)$ was studied numerically in the physics paper [7]. The authors concluded from numerical simulations that there is no evidence of dissipation cutoff for the electron MHD. In this paper we show the existence of determining wavenumber for the electron MHD, and establish a regularity condition only on the low modes of the solution. Our results suggest that the conclusion of the physics paper …
We investigate the measures of dissipation and accretion related to the weak solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. Demonstrating certain properties of nonunique characteristics, we prove a new representation formula for these measures and conclude about their structural features, such us singularity with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We apply these results to gain new insights into the structure of weak solutions, proving in particular that measures of accretion vanish for dissipative solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation.
This expository article is intended to give an overview about recently achieved results on asymptotic properties of solutions to the Cauchy problem $u_{tt}-Δu+b(t)u_t =0,\qquad u(0,\cdot)=u_1,\quad \mathrm{D}_tu(0,\cdot)=u_2$ for a wave equation with time-dependent dissipation term. The results are based on structural properties of the Fourier multipliers representing its solution. The article explains the general philosophy behind the approach.
We discuss the problem of well-posedness of the compressible (barotropic) Euler system in the framework of weak solutions. The principle of maximal dissipation introduced by C.M. Dafermos is adapted and combined with the concept of admissible weak solutions. We use the method of convex integration in the spirit of the recent work of C.DeLellis and L.Szekelyhidi to show various counterexamples to well-posedness. On the other hand, we conjecture that the principle of maximal dissipation should be retained as a possible criterion of uniqueness as it is violated by the oscillatory solutions obtain…
We consider a family of Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative, and a dissipation term with a coefficient which tends to 0 as t -> +infinity. It is well-known that, when the decay of the coefficient is slow enough, solutions behave as solutions of the corresponding parabolic equation, and in particular they decay to 0 as t -> +infinity. In this paper we consider the nondegenerate and coercive case, and we prove optimal decay estimates for the hyperbolic problem, and optimal decay-error estimates for the difference between solutions of th…
We give a small data global well-posedness result for an incompressible Oldroyd-B model with wave number dissipation in the equation of stress tensor. The result is uniform in solvent Reynolds numbers, and requires only fractional wave-number dependent dissipation $(-Δ)^β$, $β\ge \frac{1}{2}$ in the added stress.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative wave equation $$ \square u+\fracμ{1+t} u_t=0 $$ with parameter $μ\ge2$. Based on the explicit representations of solutions provided in [Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 2004; {\bf 27}:101-124] sharp decay estimates for data from a dense subspace of the energy space are derived. Furthermore, sharpness is discussed in terms of a modified scattering theory.
We study the vanishing dissipation limit of the three-dimensional (3D) compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations to the corresponding 3D full Euler equations. Our results are twofold. First, we prove that the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations admit a family of smooth solutions that converge to the planar rarefaction wave solution of the 3D compressible Euler equations with arbitrary strength. Second, we obtain a uniform convergence rate in terms of the viscosity and heat-conductivity coefficients. For this multi-dimensional problem, we first need to introduce the hyperbolic wa…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Landau equation with Coulomb interactions. Despite it's physical importance, this equation has not received a lot of mathematical attention we think due to the extreme complexity of the relativistic structure of the kernel of the collision operator. In this paper we first largely decompose the structure of the relativistic Landau collision operator. After that we prove the global Entropy dissipation estimate. Then we prove the propagation of any polynomial moment for a weak solution. Lastly we prove the existe…
We study a complex non-newtonian fluid that models the flow of nematic liquid crystals. The fluid is described by a system that couples a forced Navier-Stokes system with a parabolic-type system. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in dimensions two and three. We show the existence of a Lyapunov functional for the smooth solutions of the coupled system and use the cancellations that allow its existence to prove higher global regularity, in dimension two. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness in dimension two.
In this article we consider the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity depending on the vertical position. As our main result we establish linear enhanced dissipation near the non-affine stationary states replacing Couette flow. Moreover it turns out that the shear flow overcompensates for weakening viscosity: decreasing viscosity leads to stronger enhanced dissipation and increasing viscosity leads to weaker dissipation than in the constant viscosity case.
We study a three-dimensional fluid model describing rapidly rotating convection that takes place in tall columnar structures. The purpose of this model is to investigate the cyclonic and anticyclonic coherent structures. Global existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence on initial data, and large-time behavior of strong solutions are shown provided the model is regularized by a weak dissipation term.
We consider the initial-value problem of abstract wave equations with weak dissipation. We show that under conditions on the dissipation coefficient and its derivative the solutions to the abstract dissipative equation are closely related to solutions of the free problem multiplied by a decay function. This paper gives the counterpart to a recent paper of T.Yamazaki [Adv. Differential Equ., 11(4):419--456, 2006], where effective dissipation terms and the relation to the corresponding abstract parabolic problem are considered.
Wave propagation in curved tubular domains is considered. A general version of Webster's equation is derived from the scattering passive wave equation. More precisely, it is shown that planar averages of a sufficiently smooth solution of the wave equation satisfy the corresponding Webster's equation when the latter includes additional control signals determined by the solution.
Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence predicts that only wavenumbers below some critical value, called Kolmogorov's dissipation number, are essential to describe the evolution of a three-dimensional fluid flow. A determining wavenumber, first introduced by Foias and Prodi for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, is a mathematical analog of Kolmogorov's number. The purpose of this paper is to prove the existence of a time-dependent determining wavenumber for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations whose time average is bounded by Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber for all solutions on the global attractor whose…
In this paper we consider an acoustic problem of wave propagation through a discontinuous medium. The problem is reduced to the dissipative wave equation with distributional dissipation. We show that this problem has a so-called very weak solution, we analyse its properties and illustrate the theoretical results through some numerical simulations by approximating the solutions to the full dissipative model for a particular synthetic piecewise continuous medium. In particular, we discover numerically a very interesting phenomenon of the appearance of a new wave at the singular point. For the ac…
It is well-known that one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics has two elementary waves, i.e., shock wave and rarefaction wave. Among the two waves, only the rarefaction wave can be connected with vacuum. Given a rarefaction wave with one-side vacuum state to the compressible Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the above rarefaction wave with vacuum as the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover, the uniform convergence rate is obtained. The proof consists of a scaling argument and elementary en…
We prove local and global energy decay for the wave equation in a wave guide with damping at infinity. More precisely, the absorption index is assumed to converge slowly to a positive constant, and we obtain the diffusive phenomenon typical for the contribution of low frequencies when the damping is effective at infinity. On the other hand, the usual Geometric Control Condition is not necessarily satisfied so we may have a loss of regularity for the contribution of high frequencies. Since our results are new even in the Euclidean space, we also state a similar result in this case.
