We consider the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative wave equation $$ \square u+\fracμ{1+t} u_t=0 $$ with parameter $μ\ge2$.
Based on the explicit representations of solutions provided in [Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 2004; {\bf 27}:101-124] sharp decay estimates for data from a dense subspace of the energy space are derived. Furthermore, sharpness is discussed in terms of a modified scattering theory.
We prove the global existence of small data solution in all space dimension for weakly coupled systems of semi-linear effectively damped wave, with different time-dependent coefficients in the dissipation terms. Moreover, nonlinearity terms $ f(t,u) $ and $ g(t,v) $ satisfying some properties of the parabolic equation. We study the problem in several classes of regularity.
We consider the initial-value problem of abstract wave equations with weak dissipation. We show that under conditions on the dissipation coefficient and its derivative the solutions to the abstract dissipative equation are closely related to solutions of the free problem multiplied by a decay function. This paper gives the counterpart to a recent paper of T.Yamazaki [Adv. Differential Equ., 11(4):419--456, 2006], where effective dissipation terms and the relation to the corresponding abstract parabolic problem are considered.
In order to describe the dynamics of crowded ions (charged particles), we use an energetic variation approach to derive a modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) system which includes an extra dissipation due to the effective velocity differences between ion species. Such a system is more complicated than the original PNP system but with the same equilibrium states. Using Schauder's fixed-point theorem, we develop a local existence theorem of classical solutions for the modified PNP system. Different dynamics (but same equilibrium states) between the original and modified PNP systems can be repre…
We consider mildly degenerate Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter and a weak dissipation term. We prove the existence of global solutions when the parameter is small with respect to the size of initial data. Then we provide global-in-time error estimates on the difference between the solution of our problem and the solution of the corresponding first order problem.
In this paper we prove the local well-posedness and global well-posedness with small initial data of the strong solution to the reduced $3D$ primitive geostrophic adjustment model with weak dissipation. The term reduced model stems from the fact that the relevant physical quantities depends only on two spatial variables. The additional weak dissipation helps us overcome the ill-posedness of original model. We also prove the global well-posedness of the strong solution to the Voigt $α$-regularization of this model, and establish the convergence of the strong solution of the Voigt $α$-regularize…
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a degenerate quasilinear Kirchhoff equation with weak dissipation. This means that the coefficient of the dissipative term tends to zero when t tends to +infinity. We prove that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution for suitable values of the parameters. We also prove that the solution decays to zero, as t tends to +infinity, with the same rate of the solution of the limit problem of parabolic type.
We consider the evolution of weak vanishing viscosity solutions to the critically dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Due to the possible non-uniqueness of solutions, we rephrase the problem as a set-valued dynamical system and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal Sobolev regularity. To achieve this, we derive a new Sobolev estimate involving Hölder norms, which complement the existing estimates based on commutator analysis.
We are concerned with the existence of global in time solutions to the Cauchy problem for semi-linear Klein-Gordon equations with memory-type dissipation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In the first place, we consider the linearized equation: applying the energy method in the Fourier space, we derive the point-wise estimate of a solution in the Fourier space. However, we found that the function in energy estimates has a mistake.
We consider Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative, and a dissipative term whose coefficient may tend to 0 as t -> + infinity (weak dissipation). In this note we present some recent results concerning existence of global solutions, and their asymptotic behavior both as t -> + infinity and as epsilon -> 0. Since the limit equation is of parabolic type, this is usually referred to as a hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem. We show in particular that the equation exhibits hyperbolic or parabolic behavior depending on the value…
This article examines the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the d-dimensional micropolar equations ($d=2$ or $d=3$) with general fractional dissipation $(-Δ)^αu$ and $(-Δ)^βw$. The micropolar equations with standard Laplacian dissipation model fluids with microstructure. The generalization to include fractional dissipation allows simultaneous study of a family of equations and is relevant in some physical circumstances. We establish that, when $α\ge \frac12$ and $β\ge \frac12$, any initial data $(u_0, w_0)$ in the critical Besov space $u_0\in B^{1+\frac{d}{2}-2α}_{2,1}(\mathbb R^d)…
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a nondegenerate quasilinear equation of Kirchhoff type with weak dissipation. This means that the dissipative term is multiplied by a coefficient b(t) which tends to 0 as t tends to +infinity. The case where b(t) behaves like (1+t)^{-p} with p<1 has recently been considered. The result is that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution, and the difference between solutions of the hyperbolic problem and the corresponding solutions of the parabolic problem converges to zero both as t tends to +infinity and as epsilon…
We study a three-dimensional fluid model describing rapidly rotating convection that takes place in tall columnar structures. The purpose of this model is to investigate the cyclonic and anticyclonic coherent structures. Global existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence on initial data, and large-time behavior of strong solutions are shown provided the model is regularized by a weak dissipation term.
We study the mixing effect for a generalized Keller-Segel system with degenerate dissipation and advection by a weakly mixing. Here the attractive operator has weak singularity, namely, the negative derivative appears in the nonlinear term by singular integral. Without advection, the solution of equation blows up in finite time. We show that the global well-posedness of solution with large advection. Since dissipation term degenerate into the damping, the enhanced dissipation effect of mixing no longer occurs, we prove that the mixing effect can weak the influence of nonlinear term. In this ca…
This paper examines the uniqueness of weak solutions to the d-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations with the fractional dissipation $(-Δ)^αu$ and without the magnetic diffusion. Important progress has been made on the standard Laplacian dissipation case $α=1$. This paper discovers that there are new phenomena with the case $α<1$. The approach for $α=1$ can not be directly extended to $α<1$. We establish that, for $α<1$, any initial data $(u_0, b_0)$ in the inhomogeneous Besov space $B^σ_{2,\infty}(\mathbb R^d)$ with $σ> 1+\frac{d}{2}-α$ leads to a unique local solution. For the case …
We prove nonuniqueness of weak solutions to multi-dimensional generalisation of the Aw-Rascle model of vehicular traffic. Our generalisation includes the velocity offset in a form of gradient of density function, which results in a dissipation effect, similar to viscous dissipation in the compressible viscous fluid models. We show that despite this dissipation, the extension of the method of convex integration can be applied to generate infinitely many weak solutions connecting arbitrary initial and final states. We also show that for certain choice of data, ill posedness holds in the class of…
In this article we consider the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity depending on the vertical position. As our main result we establish linear enhanced dissipation near the non-affine stationary states replacing Couette flow. Moreover it turns out that the shear flow overcompensates for weakening viscosity: decreasing viscosity leads to stronger enhanced dissipation and increasing viscosity leads to weaker dissipation than in the constant viscosity case.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative wave equation $$ \bx v+\fracμ{1+t}v_t=0, \qquad x\in\R^n,\quad t\ge 0, $$ parameterized by $μ>0$, and prove a representation theorem for its solution using the theory of special functions. This representation is used to obtain $L_p$--$L_q$ estimates for the solution and for the energy operator corresponding to this Cauchy problem. Especially for the $L_2$ energy estimate we determine the part of the phase sp which is responsible for the decay rate. It will be shown that the situation d strongly on the value of $μ$ and that $μ=2$ is crit…
We investigate the measures of dissipation and accretion related to the weak solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. Demonstrating certain properties of nonunique characteristics, we prove a new representation formula for these measures and conclude about their structural features, such us singularity with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We apply these results to gain new insights into the structure of weak solutions, proving in particular that measures of accretion vanish for dissipative solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation.
We discuss the problem of well-posedness of the compressible (barotropic) Euler system in the framework of weak solutions. The principle of maximal dissipation introduced by C.M. Dafermos is adapted and combined with the concept of admissible weak solutions. We use the method of convex integration in the spirit of the recent work of C.DeLellis and L.Szekelyhidi to show various counterexamples to well-posedness. On the other hand, we conjecture that the principle of maximal dissipation should be retained as a possible criterion of uniqueness as it is violated by the oscillatory solutions obtain…
We consider a family of Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative, and a dissipation term with a coefficient which tends to 0 as t -> +infinity. It is well-known that, when the decay of the coefficient is slow enough, solutions behave as solutions of the corresponding parabolic equation, and in particular they decay to 0 as t -> +infinity. In this paper we consider the nondegenerate and coercive case, and we prove optimal decay estimates for the hyperbolic problem, and optimal decay-error estimates for the difference between solutions of th…
We study the enhanced dissipation for the two-jet Kolmogorov type flow which is a stationary solution to the Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional unit sphere given by the zonal spherical harmonic function of degree two. Based on the pseudospectral bound method developed by Ibrahim, Maekawa, and Masmoudi [15] and a modified version of the Gearhart-Prüss type theorem shown by Wei [48], we derive an estimate for the resolvent of the linearized operator along the imaginary axis and show that a solution to the linearized equation rapidly decays at the rate $O(e^{-\sqrtν\,t})$ when the vis…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Landau equation with Coulomb interactions. Despite it's physical importance, this equation has not received a lot of mathematical attention we think due to the extreme complexity of the relativistic structure of the kernel of the collision operator. In this paper we first largely decompose the structure of the relativistic Landau collision operator. After that we prove the global Entropy dissipation estimate. Then we prove the propagation of any polynomial moment for a weak solution. Lastly we prove the existe…
We consider the second-order in time Strang-splitting approximation for vector-valued and matrix-valued Allen-Cahn equations. Both the linear propagator and the nonlinear propagator are computed explicitly. For the vector-valued case, we prove the maximum principle and unconditional energy dissipation for a judiciously modified energy functional. The modified energy functional is close to the classical energy up to $\mathcal O(τ)$ where $τ$ is the splitting step. For the matrix-valued case, we prove a sharp maximum principle in the matrix Frobenius norm. We show modified energy dissipation und…
We study a complex non-newtonian fluid that models the flow of nematic liquid crystals. The fluid is described by a system that couples a forced Navier-Stokes system with a parabolic-type system. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in dimensions two and three. We show the existence of a Lyapunov functional for the smooth solutions of the coupled system and use the cancellations that allow its existence to prove higher global regularity, in dimension two. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness in dimension two.
In [Zhang and Zheng, 2005] it was conjectured by Zhang and Zheng that dissipative solutions of the Hunter-Saxton equation, which are known to be unique in the class of weak solutions, dissipate the energy at the highest possible rate. The conjecture of Zhang and Zheng was proven in [Dafermos, 2012] by Dafermos for monotone increasing initial data with bounded energy. In this note we prove the conjecture in [Zhang and Zheng, 2005] in full generality. To this end we examine the evolution of the energy of any weak solution of the Hunter-Saxton equation. Our proof shows in fact that for every time…
In this paper we extend and complement some recent results by Chiodaroli, De Lellis and Kreml on the well-posedness issue for weak solutions of the compressible isentropic Euler system in $2$ space dimensions with pressure law $p(ρ)=ρ^γ$, $γ\geq 1$. First we show that every Riemann problem whose one-dimensional self-similar solution consists of two shocks admits also infinitely many two-dimensional admissible bounded weak solutions (not containing vacuum) generated by the method of De Lellis and Székelyhidi. Moreover we prove that for some of these Riemann problems and for $1\leq γ< 3$ such so…
We consider here the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a stationary, divergence-free external force and with an additional damping term that depends on two parameters. We first study the well-posedness of weak solutions for these equations and then, for a particular set of the damping parameters, we will obtain an upper and lower control for the energy dissipation rate $\varepsilon$ according to the Kolmogorov K41 theory. However, although the behavior of weak solutions corresponds to the K41 theory, we will show that in some specific cases the damping term introduced in the Nav…
We prove a bound on the entropy dissipation for the Boltzmann collision operator from below by a weighted $L^p$-Norm. The estimate holds for a wide range of potentials including soft potentials as well as very soft potentials. As an application, we study weak solutions to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation and prove a weighted $L^1_t(L^p_v)$ estimate.
The Ostrovsky-Hunter equation provides a model for small-amplitude long waves in a rotating fluid of finite depth. It is a nonlinear evolution equation. In this paper we study the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to this equation in presence of some weak dissipation effects.
Whether or not classical solutions of the 2D incompressible MHD equations without full dissipation and magnetic diffusion can develop finite-time singularities is a difficult issue. A major result of this paper establishes the global regularity of classical solutions for the MHD equations with mixed partial dissipation and magnetic diffusion. In addition, the global existence, conditional regularity and uniqueness of a weak solution is obtained for the 2D MHD equations with only magnetic diffusion.
We prove the existence of the modified wave operators for a scalar quasilinear wave equation satisfying the weak null condition. This is accomplished in three steps. First, we derive a new reduced asymptotic system for the quasilinear wave equation by modifying Hörmander's method. Next, we construct an approximate solution, by solving our new reduced system given some scattering data at infinite time. Finally, we prove that the quasilinear wave equation has a global solution which agrees with the approximate solution at infinite time.
We consider the $2$D dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation with the time periodic external force and prove the existence of a unique time periodic solution in the case of the supercritical dissipation. In this case, the smoothing effect of the semigroup generated by the dissipation term is too weak to control the nonlinearity in the Duhamel term of the correponding integral equation. In this paper, we give a new approach which does not depend on the contraction mapping principle for the integral equation.
We establish local balance equations for smooth functions of the vorticity in the DiPerna-Majda weak solutions of 2D incompressible Euler, analogous to the balance proved by Duchon and Robert for kinetic energy in 3D. The anomalous term or defect distribution therein corresponds to the ``enstrophy cascade'' of 2D turbulence. It is used to define a rather natural notion of ``dissipative Euler solution'' in 2D. However, we show that the DiPerna-Majda solutions with vorticity in $L^p$ for $p>2$ are conservative and have zero defect. Instead, we must seek an alternative approach to dissipative sol…
