We establish local balance equations for smooth functions of the vorticity in the DiPerna-Majda weak solutions of 2D incompressible Euler, analogous to the balance proved by Duchon and Robert for kinetic energy in 3D. The anomalous term or defect distribution therein corresponds to the ``enstrophy cascade'' of 2D turbulence. It is used to define a rather natural notion of ``dissipative Euler solution'' in 2D. However, we show that the DiPerna-Majda solutions with vorticity in $L^p$ for $p>2$ are conservative and have zero defect. Instead, we must seek an alternative approach to dissipative solutions in 2D. If we assume an upper bound on the energy spectrum of 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes solutions by the Kraichnan-Batchelor $k^{-3}$ spectrum, uniformly for high Reynolds number, then we show that the zero viscosity limits of the Navier-Stokes solutions exist, with vorticities in the zero-index Besov space $B^{0,\infty}_2$, and that these give a weak solution of the 2D incompressible Euler equations. We conjecture that for this class of weak solutions enstrophy dissipation may indeed occur, in a sense which is made precise.
We prove that bounded weak solutions of the compressible Euler equations will conserve thermodynamic entropy unless the solution fields have sufficiently low space-time Besov regularity. A quantity measuring kinetic energy cascade will also vanish for such Euler solutions, unless the same singularity conditions are satisfied. It is shown furthermore that strong limits of solutions of compressible Navier-Stokes equations that are bounded and exhibit anomalous dissipation are weak Euler solutions. These inviscid limit solutions have non-negative anomalous entropy production and kinetic energy di…
We introduce the concept of maximal dissipative measure-valued solution to the complete Euler system. These are solutions that maximize the entropy production rate. We show that these solutions exist under fairly general hypotheses imposed on the data and constitutive relations.
In this paper we study a fractional diffusion Boussinesq model which couples the incompressible Euler equation for the velocity and a transport equation with fractional diffusion for the temperature. We prove global well-posedness results.
Non-uniqueness of Regular Solutions for Incompressible Static Euler Equations with Given Boundary Conditions and Turbulent Global Solutions of Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations
We discuss the problem of well-posedness of the compressible (barotropic) Euler system in the framework of weak solutions. The principle of maximal dissipation introduced by C.M. Dafermos is adapted and combined with the concept of admissible weak solutions. We use the method of convex integration in the spirit of the recent work of C.DeLellis and L.Szekelyhidi to show various counterexamples to well-posedness. On the other hand, we conjecture that the principle of maximal dissipation should be retained as a possible criterion of uniqueness as it is violated by the oscillatory solutions obtain…
This paper studies the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions and its large-time behavior for the compressible isothermal Euler equations with a nonlocal dissipation. The system is rigorously derived from the kinetic Cucker-Smale flocking equation with strong local alignment forces and diffusions through the hydrodynamic limit based on the relative entropy argument. In a perturbation framework, we establish the global existence of a unique strong solution for the system under suitable smallness and regularity assumptions on the initial data. We also provide the large-time behavior…
In this paper we extend and complement some recent results by Chiodaroli, De Lellis and Kreml on the well-posedness issue for weak solutions of the compressible isentropic Euler system in $2$ space dimensions with pressure law $p(ρ)=ρ^γ$, $γ\geq 1$. First we show that every Riemann problem whose one-dimensional self-similar solution consists of two shocks admits also infinitely many two-dimensional admissible bounded weak solutions (not containing vacuum) generated by the method of De Lellis and Székelyhidi. Moreover we prove that for some of these Riemann problems and for $1\leq γ< 3$ such so…
We prove the stability of contact discontinuities without shear, a family of special discontinuous solutions for the three-dimensional full Euler systems, in the class of vanishing dissipation limits of the corresponding Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. We also show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system converge to the contact discontinuity when the initial datum converges to the contact discontinuity itself. This implies the uniqueness of the contact discontinuity in the class that we are considering. Our results give an answer to the open question, whether the contact discontinuity…
On the structure of entropy dissipation and regularity for quasi-entropy solutions to 1d scalar conservation laws and to isentropic Euler system with $γ=3$
Motivated by Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence we present a unified approach to the regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We introduce a dissipation wavenumber $Λ(t)$ that separates low modes where the Euler dynamics is predominant from the high modes where the viscous forces take over. Then using an indifferent to the viscosity technique we obtain a new regularity criterion which is weaker than every Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition in the viscous case, and reduces to the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in the inviscid case. In the viscous case we also we prove that…
This article is devoted to incompressible Euler equations (or to Navier-Stokes equations in the vanishing viscosity limit). It describes the propagation of quasi-singularities. The underlying phenomena are consistent with the notion of a cascade of energy.
We study a pressureless Euler system with a nonlinear density-dependent alignment term, originating in the Cucker-Smale swarming models. The alignment term is dissipative in the sense that it tends to equilibrate the velocities. Its density dependence is natural: the alignment rate increases in the areas of high density due to species discomfort. The diffusive term has the order of a fractional Laplacian $(-\partial_{xx})^{α/2}$, $α\in (0, 1)$. The corresponding Burgers equation with a linear dissipation of this type develops shocks in a finite time. We show that the alignment nonlinearity enh…
We introduce the concept of dissipative measure-valued solution to the complete Euler system describing the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid. These solutions are characterized by a parameterized (Young) measure and a dissipation defect in the total energy balance. The dissipation defect dominates the concentration errors in the equations satisfied by the Young measure. A dissipative measure-valued solution can be seen as the most general concept of solution to the Euler system retaining its structural stability. In particular, we show that a dissipative measure-valued solution necessar…
We consider various questions about the 2d incompressible Navier-Stokes and Euler equations on a torus when dissipation is removed from or added to some of the Fourier modes.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of an ergodic invariant measure for 2D fractionally dissipated stochastic Euler equations on the periodic box, for any power of the dissipation term.
