We consider the initial-value problem of abstract wave equations with weak dissipation.
We show that under conditions on the dissipation coefficient and its derivative the solutions to the abstract dissipative equation are closely related to solutions of the free problem multiplied by a decay function. This paper gives the counterpart to a recent paper of T.Yamazaki [Adv. Differential Equ., 11(4):419--456, 2006], where effective dissipation terms and the relation to the corresponding abstract parabolic problem are considered.
We prove the global existence of small data solution in all space dimension for weakly coupled systems of semi-linear effectively damped wave, with different time-dependent coefficients in the dissipation terms. Moreover, nonlinearity terms $ f(t,u) $ and $ g(t,v) $ satisfying some properties of the parabolic equation. We study the problem in several classes of regularity.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the weakly dissipative wave equation $$ \square u+\fracμ{1+t} u_t=0 $$ with parameter $μ\ge2$. Based on the explicit representations of solutions provided in [Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. 2004; {\bf 27}:101-124] sharp decay estimates for data from a dense subspace of the energy space are derived. Furthermore, sharpness is discussed in terms of a modified scattering theory.
In order to describe the dynamics of crowded ions (charged particles), we use an energetic variation approach to derive a modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) system which includes an extra dissipation due to the effective velocity differences between ion species. Such a system is more complicated than the original PNP system but with the same equilibrium states. Using Schauder's fixed-point theorem, we develop a local existence theorem of classical solutions for the modified PNP system. Different dynamics (but same equilibrium states) between the original and modified PNP systems can be repre…
We consider an abstract second order evolution equation with damping. The "elastic" term is represented by a self-adjoint nonnegative operator A with discrete spectrum, and the nonlinear term has order greater than one at the origin. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions. We prove the coexistence of slow solutions and fast solutions. Slow solutions live close to the kernel of A, and decay as negative powers of t as solutions of the first order equation obtained by neglecting the operator A and the second order time-derivatives in the original equation. Fast solutions live close t…
We consider an abstract nonlinear second order evolution equation, inspired by some models for damped oscillations of a beam subject to external loads or magnetic fields, and shaken by a transversal force. When there is no external force, the system has three stationary positions, two stable and one unstable, and all solutions are asymptotic for $t$ large to one of these stationary solutions. We show that this pattern extends to the case where the external force is bounded and small enough, in the sense that solutions can exhibit only three different asymptotic behaviors.
We consider an abstract second order linear equation with a strong dissipation, namely a friction term which depends on a power of the "elastic" operator. In the homogeneous case, we investigate the phase spaces in which the initial value problem gives rise to a semigroup, and the further regularity of solutions. In the non-homogeneous case, we study how the regularity of solutions depends on the regularity of forcing terms, and we characterize the spaces where a bounded forcing term yields a bounded solution. What we discover is a variety of different regimes, with completely different behavi…
The contraction semigroup $S(t)={\rm e}^{t\mathbb{A}}$ generated by the abstract linear dissipative evolution equation $$ \ddot u + A u + f(A) \dot u=0 $$ is analyzed, where $A$ is a strictly positive selfadjoint operator and $f$ is an arbitrary nonnegative continuous function on the spectrum of $A$. A full description of the spectrum of the infinitesimal generator $\mathbb{A}$ of $S(t)$ is provided. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability, the semiuniform stability and the exponential stability of the semigroup are found, depending on the behavior of $f$ and the spectral propert…
We provide a simple sufficient condition in an abstract framework to deduce the existence and completeness of wave operators (resp. modified wave operators) on Sobolev spaces from the existence and completeness of the usual wave operators (resp. modified wave operators). We then give some examples of Schrödinger operators to which our abstract result applies. An application to scattering theory for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a potential is also given.
In this paper, we consider energy decay estimates for the following nonlinear evolution problem $$\begin{split} [P(u_t(t))]_t + A u(t) + B(t , x , u_t(t)) =0,\quad t\in J=(0,\infty), \end{split}$$ under suitable assumptions on the self-adjoint operators $P$ and $B$ and the divergence operator $A$. The work extends the earlier work of Marcati, Nakao, Levin and Pucci on abstract evolution equations to the case with possibly nonlinear damping. The technique also differs from earlier techniques. Here, we make use of a modified perturbed energy technique.
We study the enhanced dissipation for the two-jet Kolmogorov type flow which is a stationary solution to the Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional unit sphere given by the zonal spherical harmonic function of degree two. Based on the pseudospectral bound method developed by Ibrahim, Maekawa, and Masmoudi [15] and a modified version of the Gearhart-Prüss type theorem shown by Wei [48], we derive an estimate for the resolvent of the linearized operator along the imaginary axis and show that a solution to the linearized equation rapidly decays at the rate $O(e^{-\sqrtν\,t})$ when the vis…
We consider the second-order in time Strang-splitting approximation for vector-valued and matrix-valued Allen-Cahn equations. Both the linear propagator and the nonlinear propagator are computed explicitly. For the vector-valued case, we prove the maximum principle and unconditional energy dissipation for a judiciously modified energy functional. The modified energy functional is close to the classical energy up to $\mathcal O(τ)$ where $τ$ is the splitting step. For the matrix-valued case, we prove a sharp maximum principle in the matrix Frobenius norm. We show modified energy dissipation und…
Miura transform is known as the transformation between Korteweg de-Vries equation and modified Korteweg de-Vries equation. Its formal similarity to the Cole-Hopf transform has been noticed. This fact sheds light on the logarithmic type transformations as an origin of certain kind of nonlinearity in the soliton equations. In this article, based on the logarithmic representation of operators in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, a structure common to both Miura and Cole-Hopf transforms is discussed. In conclusion, the Miura transform is generalized as the transform in abstract Banach spaces, an…
We consider a class of abstract second order evolution equations with a restoring force that is strictly superlinear at infinity with respect to the position, and a dissipation mechanism that is strictly superlinear at infinity with respect to the velocity. Under the assumption that the growth of the restoring force dominates the growth of the dissipation, we prove a universal bound property, namely that the energy of solutions is bounded for positive times, independently of the initial condition. Under a slightly stronger assumption, we show also a universal decay property, namely that the en…
We prove uniform resolvent estimates for an abstract operator given by a dissipative perturbation of a self-adjoint operator in the sense of forms. For this we adapt the commutators method of Mourre. We also obtain the limiting absorption principle and uniform estimates for the derivatives of the resolvent. This abstract work is motivated by the Schr{ö}dinger and wave equations on a wave guide with dissipation at the boundary.
We study diffusion and mixing in different linear fluid dynamics models, mainly related to incompressible flows. In this setting, mixing is a purely advective effect which causes a transfer of energy to high frequencies. When diffusion is present, mixing enhances the dissipative forces. This phenomenon is referred to as enhanced dissipation, namely the identification of a time-scale faster than the purely diffusive one. We establish a precise connection between quantitative mixing rates in terms of decay of negative Sobolev norms and enhanced dissipation time-scales. The proofs are based on a …
We prove the existence of a unique unstable strong solution in the sense of $L^1$-norm for an abstract Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) problem arising from stratified viscous fluids in Lagrangian coordinates based on a bootstrap instability method. In the proof, we develop a method to modify the initial data of the linearized abstract RT problem based on an existence theory of unique solution of stratified (steady) Stokes problem and an iterative technique, so that the obtained modified initial data satisfy necessary compatibility conditions of the (original) abstract RT problem. Applying an inverse tra…
The paper is devoted to investigating a Cauchy problem for nonlinear elliptic PDEs in the abstract Hilbert space. The problem is hardly solved by computation since it is severely ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard. We shall use a modified integral equation method to regularize the nonlinear problem with globally and locally Lipschitz source terms. Convergence estimates are established under priori assumptions on exact solution. A numerical test is provided to illustrate that the proposed method is feasible and effective. These results extend some earlier works on a Cauchy problem for elliptic …
This paper seeks to derive the modified KdV (mKdV) equation using a novel approach from systems generated from abstract Lagrangians that possess a two-parameter symmetry group. The method to do uses a modified modulation approach, which results in the mKdV emerging with coefficients related to the conservation laws possessed by the original Lagrangian system. Alongside this, an adaptation of the method of Kuramoto is developed, providing a simpler mechanism to determine the coefficients of the nonlinear term. The theory is illustrated using two examples of physical interest, one in stratified …
We study the gradient-flow structure of a non-Newtonian thin film equation with power-law rheology. The equation is quasilinear, of fourth order and doubly-degenerate parabolic. By adding a singular potential to the natural Dirichlet energy, we introduce a modified version of the thin-film equation. Then, we set up a minimising-movement scheme that converges to global positive weak solutions to the modified problem. These solutions satisfy an energy-dissipation equality and follow a gradient flow. In the limit of a vanishing singularity of the potential, we obtain global non-negative weak solu…
In this work, we study the dissipation-modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation in two space-dimensional case. We establish that the Cauchy problem for this equation is locally well-posed in anisotropic Sobolev spaces. We show in some sense that our result is sharp. We also prove the global well-posedness for this equation under suitable conditions.
Visco-Energetic solutions of rate-independent systems are obtained by solving a modified time Incremental Minimization Scheme, where at each step the dissipation is reinforced by a viscous correction, typically a quadratic perturbation of the dissipation distance. Like Energetic and Balanced Viscosity solutions, they provide a variational characterization of rate-independent evolutions, with an accurate description of their jump behaviour. In the present paper we study Visco-Energetic solutions in the one-dimensional case and we obtain a full characterization for a broad class of energy functi…
