The aim of this paper is to obtain a uniform bound for a certain class of submodules from the following theorem: Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a local ring, let $M$ be a finite $R$--module of dimension $d\ge 1$ and let $\frak q$ be an ideal of $R$ generated by a system of parameters on $M$. Let $N$ be a submodule of $M$ with $\depth M/N\ge d-1$. Then $\ell(N/\frak qN)\le\ell(M/\frak qM)$.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. For a finitely generated $R$-module $M$, the notion of associated prime submodules of $M$ is defined. It is shown that this notion inherits most of essential properties of the usual notion of associated prime ideals. In particular, it is proved that for a Noetherian multiplication module $M$, the set of associated prime submodules of $M$ coincides with the set of $M$-radicals of primary submodules of $M$ which appear in a minimal primary decomposition of the zero submodule of $M$. Also, Anderson's theorem [{\bf 2}] is extended to minimal prime submo…
Let $N$ be a submodule of a finitely generated module $M$ over a Noetherian ring. A method for the computation of the submodule generated by the envelope of $N$ is given. The relations between weakly prime submodules and their envelopes are investigated. Using these relations, a description of the weakly radical of a submodule is obtained. The results are illustrated by examples.
Let $(R, \m)$ be a $d$-dimensional commutative noetherian local ring. Let $\M$ denote the morphism category of finitely generated $R$-modules and let $\Sc$ be the submodule category of $\M$. In this paper, we specify the Auslander transpose in submodule category $\Sc$. It will turn out that the Auslander transpose in this category can be described explicitly within ${\rm mod}R$, the category of finitely generated $R$-modules. This result is exploited to study the linkage theory as well as the Auslander-Reiten theory in $\Sc$. Indeed, a characterization of horizontally linked morphisms in terms…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $M$ be a unitary $R$-module. The aim of this paper is to extend the notion of quasi $J$-ideals of commutative rings to quasi $J$-submodules of modules. We call a proper submodule $N$ of $M$ a quasi $J$-submodule if whenever $r\in R$ and $m\in M$ such that $rm\in N$ and $r\notin(J(R)M:M)$, then $m\in M$-$rad(N)$. We present various properties and characterizations of this concept (especially in finitely generated faithful multiplication modules). Furthermore, we provide new classes of modules generalizing presimplifiable modules and justify their …
We introduce the notion of Burch submodules and weakly $\mathfrak m$-full submodules of modules over local rings and study their properties. One of our main results shows that Burch submodules satisfy 2-Tor rigid and test property. We also show that over a local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$ a submodule $M$ of a finitely generated $R$-module $X$, such that either $M=\mathfrak m X$ or $M(\subseteq \mathfrak m X$) is weakly $\mathfrak m$-full in $X$, is 1-Tor rigid and a test module provided that $X$ is faithful (and $X/M$ has finite length when $M$ is weakly $\mathfrak m$-full). As an application, we …
In this paper, we show that for an $F$-pure local ring $(R,\m)$, all local cohomology modules $H_{\m}^i(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules. This answers positively an open question raised by F.Enescu and M.Hochster. We also prove that if $(R,\m)$ is excellent and is $F$-pure on the punctured spectrum, then all local cohomology modules have finite length in the category of $R$-modules with Frobenius action. Finally, we show that the property that all $H_{\m}^(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules passes to localizations.
All rings are commutative with $1\neq0$, and all modules are unital. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of $2$-absorbing primary submodules generalizing $2$-absorbing primary ideals of rings. Let $M$ be an $R$-module. A proper submodule $N$ of an $R$-module $M$ is called a $2$-absorbing primary submodule of $M$ if whenever $a,b\in R$ and $m\in M$ and $abm\in N$, then $am\in M$-$rad(N)$ or $bm\in M$-$rad(N)$ or $ab\in(N:_RM)$. It is shown that a proper submodule $N$ of $M$ is a $2$-absorbing primary submodule if and only if whenever $I_1I_2K\subseteq N$ for some ideals $I_1…
Let R be a commutative ring with identity. A prime submodule P of an R-module M is called coprimely structured if, whenever P is coprime to each element of an arbitrary family of submodules of M, the intersection of the family is not contained in P. An R-module M is called coprimely structured provided each prime submodule of M is coprimely structured. In this paper, properties of coprimely structured modules are examined. Severals results for coprimely structured finitely generated modules and coprimely structured multiplication modules are obtained.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with a non-zero identity, $S$ be a multiplicatively closed subset of $R$ and $M$ be a unital $R$-module. In this paper, we define a submodule $N$ of $M$ with $(N:_{R}M)\cap S=\emptyset$ to be weakly $S$-primary if there exists $s\in S$ such that whenever $a\in R$ and $m\in M$ with $0\neq am\in N$, then either $sa\in\sqrt{(N:_{R}M)}$ or $sm\in N$. We present various properties and characterizations of this concept (especially in finitely generated faithful multiplication modules). Moreover, the behavior of this structure under module homomorphisms, localizations, q…
Commutative rings in which every prime ideal is the intersection of maximal ideals are called Hilbert (or Jacobson) rings. We propose to define classical Hilbert modules by the property that {\it classical prime} submodules are the intersection of maximal submodules. It is shown that all co-semisimple modules as well as all Artinian modules are classical Hilbert modules. Also, every module over a zero-dimensional ring is classical Hilbert. Results illustrating connections amongst the notions of classical Hilbert module and Hilbert ring are also provided. Rings $R$ over which all $R$-modules ar…
The purpose of the present paper is to prove some properties of the strongly irreducible submodules in the arithmetical and Noetherian modules over a commutative ring. The relationship among the families of strongly irreducible submodules, irreducible submodules, prime submodules and primal submodules is proved. Also, several new characterizations of the arithmetical modules are given. In the case when $R$ is Noetherian and $M$ is finitely generated, several characterizations of strongly irreducible submodules are included. Among other things, it is shown that when $N$ is a submodule of $M$ su…
A set of polynomials $M$ is called a {\it submodule} of $\mathbb{C} [x_1, \dots, x_n ]$ if $M$ is a translation invariant linear subspace of $\mathbb{C} [x_1, \dots, x_n ]$. We present a description of the submodules of $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ in terms of a special type of submodules. We say that the submodule $M$ of $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ is an {\it L-module of order} $s$ if, whenever $F(x,y)=\sum_{n=0}^N f_n (x) \cdot y^n \in M$ is such that $f_0 =\ldots = f_{s-1}=0$, then $F=0$. We show that the proper submodules of $\mathbb{C} [x,y]$ are the sums $M_d +M$, where $M_d =\{ F\in \mathbb{C} [x,y] \colo…
In this paper, we prove that a finitely embedded $R$-module $M$ is Artinian if and only if for every prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of $R$ with $(0:_RM)\subseteq \mathfrak{p}$, there exists a submodule $N^\mathfrak{p}$ of $M$ such that $M/N^\mathfrak{p}$ is finitely embedded and $M[\mathfrak{p}]\subseteq N^\mathfrak{p}\subseteq (0:_M\mathfrak{p})$.
We study primary submodules and primary decompositions from a differential and computational point of view. Our main theoretical contribution is a general structure theory and a representation theorem for primary submodules of an arbitrary finitely generated module over a polynomial ring. We characterize primary submodules in terms of differential operators and punctual Quot schemes. Moreover, we introduce and implement an algorithm that computes a minimal differential primary decomposition for a module.
An $R$-module $M$ is called virtually uniserial if for every finitely generated submodule $0 \neq K \subseteq M$, $K/$Rad$(K)$ is virtually simple. In this paper, we generalize virtually uniserial modules by dropping the virtually simple condition and replacing it by the cyclic uniform condition. An $R$-module $M$ is called cyclic-uniform uniserial if $K/$Rad$(K)$ is cyclic and uniform, for every finitely generated submodule $0 \neq K \subseteq M$. Also, $M$ is said to be cyclic-uniform serial if it is a direct sum of cyclic-uniform uniserial modules. Several properties of cyclic-uniform (uni)…
For modules over group rings we introduce the following numerical parameter. We say that a module A over a ring R has finite r-generator property if each f.g. (finitely generated) R-submodule of A can be generated exactly by r elements and there exists a f.g. R-submodule D of A, which has a minimal generating subset, consisting exactly of r elements. Let FG be the group algebra of a finite group G over a field F. In the present paper modules over the algebra FG having finite generator property are described.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module and $n$ be a non-negative integer. In this article, it is shown that there is a finitely generated submodule $N_i$ of $H_{\frak a}^i(M)$ such that $\dim{\rm Supp } H_{\frak a}^i(M)/N_i<n$ for all $i<t$ if and only if there is a finitely generated submodule $N_{i,{\frak p}}$ of $H_{{\frak a} R_{\frak p}}^i(M_{\frak p})$ such that $\dim{\rm Supp } H_{{\frak a} R_{\frak p}}^i(M_{\frak p})/N_{i,{\frak p}}<n$ for all $i<t$. This generalizes Faltings' Local-global Principle for the finiteness of local cohomology modules (F…
Let $(R,\m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R-$module with $\dim M=d.$ This paper is concerned with the following property for the top local cohomology module $H^d_\m(M)$: $$\Ann (0:_{H^d_\m(M)}\p)=\p\ \text{for all prime ideals} \p\supseteq\Ann H^d_\m(M).$$ In this paper we will show that this property is equivalent to the catenaricity of the unmixed support $\Usupp M$ of $M$ which is defined by $\Usupp M=\Supp M/U_M(0)$, where $U_M(0)$ is the largest submodule of $M$ of dimension less than $d.$ Some characterizations of this property in terms of system of parameters…
Let \fa be an ideal of a local ring (R,\fm) and M a finitely generated R-module. This paper concerns the notion \fgrade(\fa,M), the formal grade of M with respect to \fa (i.e. the least integer i such that {\vpl}_nH^i_{\fm}(M/\fa^n M)\neq 0). We show that \fgrade(\fa,M)\geq \depth M-\cd_{\fa}(M), and as a result, we establish a new characterization of Cohen-Macaulay modules. As an application of this characterization, we show that if M is Cohen-Macaulay and L a pure submodule of M with the same support as M, then \fgrade(\fa,L)=\fgrade(\fa,M). Also, we give a generalization of the Hochster-Eag…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian ring. For a finitely generated $R$-module $M$, Northcott introduced the reducibility index of $M$, which is the number of submodules appearing in an irredundant irreducible decomposition of the submodule $0$ in $M$. On the other hand, for an Artinian $R$-module $A$, Macdonald proved that the number of sum-irreducible submodules appearing in an irredundant sum-irreducible representation of $A$ does not depend on the choice of the representation. This number is called the sum-reducibility index of $A$. In the former part of this paper, we compute the reducibility index of…
Let K be a field and S a polynomial ring in a finite number of variables over K. Let F be a finitely generated graded free S-module. We examine some classes of squarefree monomial submodules of F. Hence, we focalize our attention on the Betti table of such classes in order to analyze the behavior of their extremal Betti numbers.
The space of marked commutative rings on n given generators is a compact metrizable space. We compute the Cantor-Bendixson rank of any member of this space. For instance, the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the free commutative ring on n generators is omega^n, where omega is the smallest infinite ordinal. More generally, we work in the space of finitely generated modules over a given commutative ring.
We prove that all pure submodules of a finite rank torsion-free module $A$ over a Dedekind domain are $A$-generated if and only if $A$ has a rank $1$ direct summand $B$ such that $\mathbf{type}(B)$ is the inner type of $A$.
A classical problem in the literature seeks the minimal number of proper subgroups whose union is a given finite group. A different question, with applications to error-correcting codes and graph colorings, involves covering vector spaces over finite fields by (minimally many) proper subspaces. In this note we cover $R$-modules by proper submodules for commutative rings $R$, thereby subsuming and recovering both cases above. Specifically, we study the smallest cardinal number $\aleph$, possibly infinite, such that a given $R$-module is a union of $\aleph$-many proper submodules. (1) We complet…
Let $M$ be a finitely generated module on a local ring $R$ and $\F: M_0\subset M_1\subset...\subset M_t=M$ a filtration of submodules of $M$ such that $ d_o<d_1< ... <d_t=d$, where $d_i=\dim M_i$. This paper is concerned with a non-negative integer $p_\mathcal F(M)$ which is defined as the least degree of all polynomials in $n_1, ..., n_d$ bounding above the function $$\ell(M/(x_1^{n_1}, ..., x_d^{n_d})M)-\sum_{i=0}^tn_1...n_{d_i}e(x_1,..., x_{d_i};M_i).$$ We prove that $p_\mathcal F(M)$ is independent of the choices of good systems of parameters $\underline x=x_1, ..., x_d$. When $\F$ is the …
Let $R$ be the power series ring or the polynomial ring over a field $k$ and let $I $ be an ideal of $R.$ Macaulay proved that the Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebras $R/I$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the cyclic $R$-submodules of the divided power series ring $Γ. $ The result is effective in the sense that any polynomial of degree $s$ produces an Artinian Gorenstein $k$-algebra of socle degree $s.$ In a recent paper, the authors extended Macaulay's correspondence characterizing the $R$-submodules of $Γ$ in one-to-one correspondence with Gorenstein d-dimensional $k$-algebras. However, th…
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A numerical characterization of all possible extremal Betti numbers of any graded submodule of a finitely generated graded free $S$-module is given.
A module $M$ over the tropical semifield $T$ is analogous to a module over a field. We assume that $M$ is straight reflexive, and define the dimension of $M$ to the number of elements of a basis. We study the dimension of a straight reflexive submodule $N \subset M$. Also we find an enough condition to the reflexivity. This result has an application to polytopes in a tropical projective space, and also to a Riemann-Roch theorem for tropical curves.
Let $K$ be a field, and let $R = K[X]$ be the polynomial ring in an infinite collection $X$ of indeterminates over $K$. Let ${\mathfrak S}_{X}$ be the symmetric group of $X$. The group ${\mathfrak S}_{X}$ acts naturally on $R$, and this in turn gives $R$ the structure of a left module over the (left) group ring $R[{\mathfrak S}_{X}]$. A recent theorem of Aschenbrenner and Hillar states that the module $R$ is Noetherian. We prove that submodules of $R$ can have any number of minimal generators.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian domain, and let M and N be finitely generated R-modules. We give new criteria for determining when M tensor N has torsion. We also give constructive formulas for producing a module in the isomorphism class of the torsion submodule of M tensor N. In some cases we determine bounds on the length and minimal number of generators of this module. We focus on the case where R is a numerical semigroup ring with the goal of making progress on the Huneke-Wiegand Conjecture.
Let $R$ denote a commutative Noetherian (not necessarily local) ring, $M$ an arbitrary $R$-module and $I$ an ideal of $R$ of dimension one. It is shown that the $R$-module $\Ext^i_R(R/I,M)$ is finitely generated (resp. weakly Laskerian) for all $i\leq {\rm cd}(I,M)+1$ if and only if the local cohomology module $H^i_I(M)$ is $I$-cofinite (resp. $I$-weakly cofinite) for all $i$. Also, we show that when $I$ is an arbitrary ideal and $M$ is finitely generated module such that the $R$-module $H^i_I(M)$ is weakly Laskerian for all $i\leq t-1$, then $H^i_I(M)$ is $I$-cofinite for all $i\leq t-1$ and …
Let $\mathfrak a$ be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ and $t$ be a non-negative integer. Let $M$ and $N$ be two finitely generated $R$-modules. In certain cases, we give some bounds under inclusion for the annihilators of $\operatorname{Ext}^t_R(M, N)$ and $\operatorname{H}^t_{\mathfrak a}(M)$ in terms of minimal primary decomposition of the zero submodule of $M$ which are independent of the choice of minimal primary decomposition. Then, by using those bounds, we compute the annihilators of local cohomology and Ext modules in certain cases.
Let $R$ be a ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be a weak $w$-projective module if ${\rm Ext}_R^1(M,N)=0$ for all $N \in \mathcal{P}_{w}^{\dagger_\infty}$ (see, \cite{FLQ}). In this paper, we introduce and study some properties of weak $w$-projective modules. And we use these modules to characterize some classical rings, for example, we will prove that a ring $R$ is a $DW$-ring if and only if every weak $w$-projective is projective, $R$ is a Von Neumann regular ring if and only if every FP-projective is weak $w$-projective if and only if every finitely presented $R$-module is weak $w$-projecti…
Let $I$ be an ideal of a Noetherian ring R and M be a finitely generated R-module. We introduce the class of extension modules of finitely generated modules by the class of all modules $T$ with $\dim T\leq n$ and we show it by ${\rm FD_{\leq n}}$ where $n\geq -1$ is an integer. We prove that for any ${\rm FD_{\leq 0}}$(or minimax) submodule N of $H^t_I(M)$ the R-modules ${\rm Hom}_R(R/I,H^{t}_I(M)/N) {\rm and} {\rm Ext}^1_R(R/I,H^{t}_I(M)/N)$ are finitely generated, whenever the modules $H^0_I(M)$, $H^1_I(M)$, ..., $H^{t-1}_I(M)$ are ${\rm FD_{\leq 1}}$ (or weakly Laskerian). As a consequence,…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring of dimension $d>0$ with infinite residue field. Let $M$ be a finitely generated proper $R$-submodule of a free $R$-module $F$ with $\ell (F/M) < \infty$ and having rank $r$. In this article, we study the fiber multiplicity $f_0(M)$ of the module $M$. We prove that if $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is a two dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring, then $f_0(M)\le br_1(M)-br_0(M)+\ell (F/M)+μ(M)-r$, where $br_i(M)$ denotes the $i^{th}$ Buchsbaum-Rim coefficient of $M$.
The concept of Faltings' local-global principle for the minimaxness of local cohomology modules over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ is introduced, and it is shown that this principle holds at level 2. We also establish the same principle at all levels over an arbitrary commutative Noetherian ring of dimension not exceeding 3. These generalize the main results of Brodmann et al. in \cite{BRS}. Moreover, it is shown that if $M$ is a finitely generated $R$-module, $\frak a$ an ideal of $R$ and $r$ a non-negative integer such that $\frak a^tH^i_{\frak a}(M)$ is skinny for all $i<r$ and for some…
We introduce FI-algebras over a commutative ring $K$ and the category of FI-modules over an FI-algebra. Such a module may be considered as a family of invariant modules over compatible varying $K$-algebras. FI-modules over $K$ correspond to the well studied constant coefficient case where every algebra equals $K$. We show that a finitely generated FI-module over a noetherian polynomial FI-algebra is a noetherian module. This is established by introducing OI-modules. We prove that every submodule of a finitely generated free OI-module over a noetherian polynomial OI-algebra has a finite Gröbner…
Working over an infinite field of positive characteristic, an upper bound is given for the nilpotency index of a finitely generated nil algebra of bounded nil index $n$ in terms of the maximal degree in a minimal homogenous generating system of the ring of simultaneous conjugation invariants of tuples of $n$ by $n$ matrices. This is deduced from a result of Zubkov. As a consequence, a recent degree bound due to Derksen and Makam for the generators of the ring of matrix invariants yields an upper bound for the nilpotency index of a finitely generated nil algebra that is polynomial in the number…
An ideal invariant for multiparameter persistence would be discriminative, computable and stable. In this work we analyse the discriminative power of a stable, computable invariant of multiparameter persistence modules: the fibered bar code. The fibered bar code is equivalent to the rank invariant and encodes the bar codes of the 1-parameter submodules of a multiparameter module. This invariant is well known to be globally incomplete. However in this work we show that the fibered bar code is locally complete for finitely presented modules by showing a local equivalence of metrics between the i…
This work clarifies the relationship between the openness of the regular locus of a commutative Noetherian ring R and the existence of generators for the category of finitely generated R-modules, the corresponding bounded derived category, and for the singularity category of R.
A nonzero locally nilpotent linear derivation of the polynomial algebra K[X] in d variables over a field K of characteristic 0 is called a Weitzenboeck derivation. The classical theorem of Weitzenboeck states that the algebra of constants (which coincides with the algebra of invariants of a single unipotent transformation) is finitely generated. Similarly one may consider the algebra of constants of a locally nilpotent linear derivation of a finitely generated (not necessarily commutative or associative) algebra which is relatively free in a variety of algebras over K. Now the algebra of const…
Let G be an affine algebraic group acting on an affine variety X. We present an algorithm for computing generators of the invariant ring K[X]^G in the case where G is reductive. Furthermore, we address the case where G is connected and unipotent, so the invariant ring need not be finitely generated. For this case, we develop an algorithm which computes K[X]^G in terms of a so-called colon-operation. From this, generators of K[X]^G can be obtained in finite time if it is finitely generated. Under the additional hypothesis that K[X] is factorial, we present an algorithm that finds a quasi-affine…
