We solve the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system in arbitrary dimension and codimension assuming a condition on the variation of the initial submanifold .
We consider the Dirichlet boundary value problem for graphical maximal submanifolds inside Lorentzian type ambient spaces, and obtain general existence and uniqueness results which apply to any codimension.
We establish a boundary maximum principle for free boundary minimal submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold with boundary, in any dimension and codimension. Our result holds more generally in the context of varifolds.
Given any admissible $k$-dimensional family of immersions of a given closed oriented surface into an arbitrary closed Riemannian manifold, we prove that the corresponding min-max width for the area is achieved by a smooth (possibly branched) immersed minimal surface with multiplicity one and Morse index bounded by $k$.
We prove a Sobolev inequality which holds on submanifolds in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension and codimension. This inequality is sharp if the codimension is at most 2. As a special case, we obtain a sharp isoperimetric inequality for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space of codimension at most 2.
In this paper, we prove that the infimum of the mean curvature is zero for a translating solitons of hypersurface in $\re^{n+k}$. We give some conditions under which a complete hypersurface translating soliton is stable. We show that if the norm of its mean curvature is less than one, then the weighted volume may have exponent growth. We also study the Dirichlet problem for graphic translating solitons in higher codimensions.
We study the problem of finding a minimal graph with prescribed boundary data in arbitrary dimension and codimension. Existence, uniqueness, stability and regularity are treated. We first present the well-known results for codimension one: Jenkins-Serrin's existence theorem, convexity properties of the area which give uniqueness and stability and De Giorgi's theorem for regularity. In higher codimension we first discuss the counterexamples of Lawson and Osserman. Then we present the recent results of Mu-Tao Wang: we use the mean curvature flow to show existence for small boundary data and we p…
We make systematic developments on Lawson-Osserman constructions relating to the Dirichlet problem (over unit disks) for minimal surfaces of high codimension in their 1977 Acta paper. In particular, we show the existence of boundary functions for which infinitely many analytic solutions and at least one nonsmooth Lipschitz solution exist simultaneously. This newly-discovered amusing phenomenon enriches the understanding on the Lawson-Osserman philosophy.
In this note, we show that the solution to the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system in any codimension is unique in the space of distance-decreasing maps. This follows as a corollary of the following stability theorem: if a minimal submanifold $Σ$ is the graph of a (strictly) distance-decreasing map, then $Σ$ is (strictly) stable. It is known that a minimal graph of codimension one is stable without assuming the distance-decreasing condition. We give another criterion for the stability in terms of the two-Jacobians of the map which in particular covers the codimension one case. All…
We prove some epsilon regularity results for n-dimensional minimal two-valued Lipschitz graphs. The main theorems imply uniqueness of tangent cones and regularity of the singular set in a neighbourhood of any point at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a pair of transversely intersecting multiplicity one n-dimensional planes, and in a neighbourhood of any point at which at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a union of four distinct multiplicity one n-dimensional half-planes that meet along an (n-1) - dimensional axis. The key ingredient is a new Excess Improvement Lemma obtai…
The maximal graph Dirichlet problem asks whether there exists a spacelike graph, in a semi-Euclidean space, with a given boundary and with mean curvature everywhere zero. We prove the existence of solutions to this problem under certain assumptions on the given boundary. Most importantly, the results proved here will hold for graphs of codimension greater than 1.
We give a survey on the development of the study of the asymptotic Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. Part of this survey is based on the introductory part of the doctoral dissertation of the author. The paper is organised as follows. First we introduce Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and the concept of asymptotic Dirichlet problem, then discuss about the development of the results and describe the methods used in the proofs. In the end we mention some results about the nonsolvability of the asymptotic Dirichlet problem.
In this paper, we study existence and uniqueness of solutions to Jenkins-Serrin type problems on domains in a Riemannian surface. In the case of unbounded domains, the study is focused on the hyperbolic plane.
Let Σbe a minimal submanifold of \R^{n+m} that can be represented as the graph of a smooth map f:\R^n-->\R^m. We apply a formula we derived in the study of mean curvature flow to obtain conditions under which Σmust be an affine subspace. Our result covers all known ones in the general case. The conditions are stated in terms of the singular values of $df$.
In the 1980's, Almgren developed a theory of multi-valued Dirichlet energy minimizing functions on $n$ dimensional domains and used it, in an essential way, to bound the Hausdorff dimension of the singular sets of area minimizing rectifiable currents of dimension $n$ and codimension $\geq 2$. Recent work of the second author shows that two-valued $C^{1, μ}$ harmonic functions on $n$ dimensional domains, which are typically-non-minimizing stationary points of Dirichlet energy, play an essential role in the study of multiplicity 2 branch points of stable codimension 1 rectifiable currents of dim…
We extend Osserman's lemma on the generalized Gauss map of two-dimensional minimal graphs of higher codimension, construct a Jenkins-Serrin type special Lagrangian Scherk graph explicitly, and generalize Calabi's correspondence between minimal graphs and maximal graphs.
Let $L$ be a special Lagrangian submanifold of a compact, Calabi-Yau manifold $M$ with boundary lying on the symplectic, codimension 2 submanifold $W$. It is shown how deformations of $L$ which keep the boundary of $L$ confined to $W$ can be described by an elliptic boundary value problem, and two results about minimal Lagrangian submanifolds with boundary are derived using this fact. The first is that the space of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds near $L$ with boundary on $W$ is found to be finite dimensional and is parametrised over the space of harmonic 1-forms of $L$ satisfying Neumann boun…
Local and global properties of minimal solutions for the heat equation generated by the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian negatively perturbed by Hardy's potentials on open subsets of $\R^d$ are analyzed. As a byproduct we obtain instantaneous blow-up of nonnegative solutions in the supercritical case.
In this paper, we study large $m$ asymptotics of the $l^1$ minimal $m$-partition problem for Dirichlet eigenvalue. For any smooth domain $Ω\in \mathbb{R}^n$ such that $|Ω|=1$, we prove that the limit $\lim\limits_{m\rightarrow\infty}l_m^1(Ω)=c_0$ exists, and the constant $c_0$ is independent of the shape of $Ω$. Here $l_m^1(Ω)$ denotes the minimal value of the normalized sum of the first Laplacian eigenvalues for any $m$-partition of $Ω$.
In the early 1980's Almgren developed a theory of Dirichlet energy minimizing multi-valued functions, proving that the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set (including branch points) of such a function is at most $(n-2),$ where $n$ is the dimension of its domain. Almgren used this result in an essential way to show that the same upper bound holds for the dimension of the singular set of an area minimizing $n$-dimensional rectifiable current of arbitrary codimension. In either case, the dimension bound is sharp. We develop estimates to study the asymptotic behaviour of a multi-valued Dirichle…
In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem of translating mean curvature equations over domains in Riemannian manifolds with dimension $n$. Imitating the generalized solution theory of Miranda-Giusti, we define a new conformal area functional and a generalized solution to this Dirichlet problem. The existence of generalized solutions to this problem on bounded Lipschitz domains is established. If the domain is mean convex and bounded with $C^2$ boundary, its closure does not contain any closed minimal hypersurface except a singular set with its Hausdorff dimension at most $n-7$ and the bound…
We consider a Plateau problem in codimension $1$ in the non-parametric setting. A Dirichlet boundary datum is given only on part of the boundary $\partial Ω$ of a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. Where the Dirichlet datum is not prescribed, we allow a free contact with the horizontal plane. We show existence of a solution, and prove regularity for the corresponding minimal surface. Finally we compare these solutions with the classical minimal surfaces of Meeks and Yau, and show that they are equivalent when the Dirichlet boundary datum is assigned in at most $2$ disjoint arcs of $…
For $n\geq2,$ we obtain Liouville type theorems for minimal surface equations in half space $\mathbf R^n_+$ with affine Dirichlet boundary value or constant Neumann boundary value.
We study the double obstacle problem for p-harmonic functions on arbitrary bounded nonopen sets E in quite general metric spaces. The Dirichlet and single obstacle problems are included as special cases. We obtain Adams' criterion for the solubility of the single obstacle problem and establish connections with fine potential theory. We also study when the minimal p-weak upper gradient of a function remains minimal when restricted to a nonopen subset. Most of the results are new for open E (apart from those which are trivial in this case) and also on R^n.
It is well-known that under suitable hypotheses, for a sequence of solutions of the (simplified) Ginzburg-Landau equations $-Δu_\varepsilon +\varepsilon^{-2}(|u_\varepsilon|^2-1)u_\varepsilon = 0$, the energy and vorticity concentrate as $\varepsilon\to 0$ around a codimension $2$ stationary varifold -- a (measure theoretic) minimal surface. Much less is known about the question of whether, given a codimension $2$ minimal surface, there exists a sequence of solutions for which the given minimal surface is the limiting concentration set. The corresponding question is very well-understood for mi…
We study a prescribed mean curvature problem where we seek a surface whose mean curvature vector coincides with the normal component of a given vector field. We prove that the problem has a solution near a graphical minimal surface if the prescribed vector field is sufficiently small in a dimensionally sharp Sobolev norm.
Well-posedness of Dirichlet boundary value problems for reflected fractional $p$-Laplace-type inhomogeneous equations in compact doubling metric measure spaces
We consider here a nonlinear elliptic equation in an unbounded sectorial domain of the plane. We prove the existence of a minimal solution to this equation and study its properties. We infer from this analysis some asymptotics for the stationary solution of an equation arising in plasma physics.
This paper studies the Dirichlet problem for Laplace's equation in a domain $Ω_{\varepsilon, η}$ perforated with small holes, where $\varepsilon$ represents the scale of the minimal distances between holes and $η$ the ratio between the scale of sizes of holes and $\varepsilon$. We establish $W^{1, p}$ estimates for solutions with bounding constants depending explicitly on the small parameters $\varepsilon$ and $η$. We also show that these estimates are either optimal or near optimal.
We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by the $(p,q)$-Laplacian and with a reaction having the combined effects of a singular term and of a parametric $(p-1)$-superlinear perturbation. We prove a bifurcation-type result describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the parameter $λ>0$ varies. Moreover, we prove the existence of a minimal positive solution $u^*_λ$ and study the monotonicity and continuity properties of the map $λ\to u^*_λ$.
