In the paper, we consider the large time behavior of solutions to the convection-diffusion equation u_t - Delta u + nabla cdot f(u) = 0 in R^n times [0,infinity), where f(u) ~ u^q as u --> 0. Under the assumption that q >= 1+1/(n+beta) and the initial condition u_0 satisfies: u_0 in L^1(R^n), integral_{R^n} u_0(x) dx = 0, and |e^{t Delta}u_0|_{L^1(R^n)} <= Ct^{-beta/2} for fixed beta in (0,1), all t>0, and a constant C, we show that the L^1-norm of the solution to the convection-diffusion equation decays with the rate t^{-beta/2} as t --> infinity. Moreover, we prove that, for small initial conditions, the exponent q^* = 1+1/(n+beta) is critical in the following sense. For q > q^* the large time behavior in L^p(R^n), 1 <= p <= infinity, of solutions is described by self-similar solutions to the linear heat equation. For q = q^*, we prove that the convection-diffusion equation with f(u) = u|u|^{q^*-1} has a family of self-similar solutions which play an important role in the large time asymptotics of general solutions.
The one-dimensional viscous conservation law is considered on the whole line $$ u_t + f(u)_x=\eps u_{xx},\quad (x,t)\in\RR\times\overline{\RP},\quad \eps>0, $$ subject to positive measure initial data. The flux $f\in C^1(\RR)$ is assumed to satisfy a $p-$condition, a weak form of convexity. Existence and uniqueness of solutions is established. The method of proof relies on sharp decay estimates for viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
Two-dimensional gas dynamics equations in mass Lagrangian coordinates are studied in this paper. The equations describing these flows are reduced to two Euler-Lagrange equations. Using group classification and Noether's theorem, conservation laws are obtained. Their counterparts in Eulerian coordinates are given. Among these counterparts there are new conservation laws.
We consider a new nonlocal formulation of the water-wave problem for a free surface with an irrotational flow based on the work of Ablowitz, Fokas, and Musslimani and presented in the recent work of Oliveras. The main focus of the short paper is to show how one can systematically derive Olver's eight conservation laws not only for an irrotational fluid, but also for constant vorticity (linear shear flow) without explicitly relying on the underlying Lie symmetries. This allows us to make draw new conclusions about conservation laws and posit the existence of additional, nonlocal, conservation l…
We prove the convergence of quasilinear parabolic viscous approximations to the entropy solution (in the sense of Bardos-Leroux-Nedelec) of a scalar conservation law, considered on a bounded domain in $\R^d$.
In this paper we study small shocks of 1D scalar viscous conservation laws with uniformly convex flux and nonlinear dissipation. We show that such shocks are L2 stable independent of the strength of the dissipation, even with large perturbations. The proof uses the relative entropy method with a spatially-inhomogeneous psuedo-norm.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar non-viscous diffusive dispersive conservation laws where the far field states are prescribed. We proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the constant state as time goes to infinity.
We derive conservation laws for Dirac-harmonic maps and their extensions to manifolds that have isometries, where we mostly focus on the spherical case. In addition, we discuss several geometric and analytic applications of the latter.
The explicit formulation of the general inverse problem on conservation laws is presented for the first time. In this problem one aims to derive the general form of systems of differential equations that admit a prescribed set of conservation laws. The particular cases of the inverse problem on first integrals of ordinary differential equations and on conservation laws for evolution equations are studied. We also solve the inverse problem on conservation laws for differential equations admitting an infinite dimensional space of zeroth-order conservation-law characteristics. This particular cas…
We study the $L^2$-type contraction property of large perturbations around shock waves of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. The contraction holds up to a shift, and it is measured by a weighted related entropy, for which we choose an appropriate entropy associated with the strictly convex flux. In particular, we handle shocks with small amplitude. This result improves the recent article [18] of the author and Vasseur on $L^2$-contraction property of shocks to scalar viscous conservation laws with a special flux, that is almost the Burgers flux…
We study a class of variational problems for regularized conservation laws with Lax's entropy-entropy flux pairs. We first introduce a modified optimal transport space based on conservation laws with diffusion. Using this space, we demonstrate that conservation laws with diffusion are "flux--gradient flows". We next construct variational problems for these flows, for which we derive dual PDE systems for regularized conservation laws. Several examples, including traffic flow and Burgers' equation, are presented. Incorporating both primal-dual algorithms and monotone schemes, we successfully com…
The large time behavior of the solutions to a multi-dimensional viscous conservation law is considered in this paper. It is shown that the solution time-asymptotically tends to the planar rarefaction wave if the initial perturbations are multi-dimensional periodic. The time-decay rate is also obtained. Moreover, a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality is established in the domain $ \mathbb R \times \mathbb T^{n-1} (n\geq2) $, where $\mathbb T^{n-1}$ is the $ n-1 $-dimensional torus.
In this work we consider companion conservation laws to general systems of conservation laws. We investigate sufficient regularity for weak solutions to satisfy companion laws, assuming the fluxes to be $C^{1,γ}$, $0<γ<1$, regular. We discuss applications of the general framework to nonlinear elasticity and compressible Euler system.
We prove existence and boundedness of classical solutions for a family of viscous conservation laws in one space dimension for arbitrarily large time. The result relies on H. Amann's criterion for global existence of solutions and on suitable uniform-in-time estimates for the solution. We also apply Jüngel's boundedness-by-entropy principle in order to obtain global existence for systems with possibly degenerate diffusion terms. This work is motivated by the study of a physical model for the space-time evolution of the strain and velocity of an anharmonic spring of finite length.
We study a damped scalar conservation law driven by the sum of a fixed external force and a localised one-dimensional control. The problem is considered in a bounded domain and is supplemented with the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is proved that any solution of the uncontrolled equation can be exponentially stabilised. As a consequence, we obtain the global approximate controllability to trajectories by a one-dimensional localised control.
I consider the existence and structure of conservation laws for the general class of evolutionary scalar second-order differential equations with parabolic symbol. First I calculate the linearized characteristic cohomology for such equations. This provides an auxiliary differential equation satisfied by the conservation laws of a given parabolic equation. This is used to show that conservation laws for any evolutionary parabolic equation depend on at most second derivatives of solutions. As a corollary, it is shown that the only evolutionary parabolic equations with at least one non-trivial co…
In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability of the composite wave consisting of planar rarefaction and planar contact waves for viscous conservation laws with degenerate flux under multi-dimensional periodic perturbations. To the level of our knowledge, it is the first stability result of the composite wave for conservation laws in several dimensions. Moreover, the perturbations studied in the present paper are periodic, which keep constantly oscillating at infinity. Suitable ansatz is constructed to overcome the difficulty caused by this kind of perturbation and delicate estimates are don…
We are interested in viscous scalar conservation laws with a white-in-time but spatially correlated stochastic forcing. The equation is assumed to be one-dimensional and periodic in the space variable, and its flux function to be locally Lipschitz continuous and have at most polynomial growth. Neither the flux nor the noise need to be non-degenerate. In a first part, we show the existence and uniqueness of a global solution in a strong sense. In a second part, we establish the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure for this strong solution.
We consider a $L^2$-contraction of large viscous shock waves for the multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws, up to a suitable shift. The shift function depends on the time and space variables. It solves a parabolic equation with inhomogeneous coefficients reflecting the perturbation. We consider a suitably small $L^2$-perturbation around a viscous planar shock wave of arbitrarily large strength. However, we do not impose any condition on the anti-derivative variables of the perturbation around shock profile. More precisely, it is proved that if the initial perturbation around the v…
We determine the Lie point symmetries of a Gardner type system and establish its nonlinear self-adjointness. We then construct conservation laws via Ibragimov's Theorem.
This paper deals with some qualitative properties of entropy solutions to hyperbolic conservation laws. In [11] the jump set of entropy solution to conservation laws has been introduced. We find an entropy solution to scalar conservation laws for which the jump set is not closed, in particular, it is dense in a space-time domain. In the later part of this article, we obtain a similar result for the hyperbolic system. We give two different approaches for scalar conservation laws and hyperbolic system to obtain the results. For the scalar case, obtained solutions are more explicitly calculated.
We deal with the problem of approximating a scalar conservation law by a conservation law with nonlocal flux. As convolution kernel in the nonlocal flux, we consider an exponential-type approximation of the Dirac distribution. This enables us to obtain a total variation bound on the nonlocal term. By using this, we prove that the (unique) weak solution of the nonlocal problem converges strongly in $C(L^{1}_{\text{loc}})$ to the entropy solution of the local conservation law. We conclude with several numerical illustrations which underline the main results and, in particular, the difference bet…
Under a precise genuine nonlinearity assumption we establish the decay of entropy solutions of a multidimensional scalar conservation law with merely continuous flux.
We obtain conservation laws at negative regularity for the Benjamin-Ono equation on the line and on the circle. These conserved quantities control the $H^s$ norm of the solution for $-\frac{1}{2} < s < 0$. The conservation laws are obtained from a study of the perturbation determinant associated to the Lax pair of the equation.
We present a general method for obtaining conservation laws for integrable PDE at negative regularity and exhibit its application to KdV, NLS, and mKdV. Our method works uniformly for these problems posed both on the line and on the circle.
A common feature of systems of conservation laws of continuum physics is that they are endowed with natural companion laws which are in such case most often related to the second law of thermodynamics. This observation easily generalizes to any symmetrizable system of conservation laws. They are endowed with nontrivial companion conservation laws, which are immediately satisfied by classical solutions. Not surprisingly, weak solutions may fail to satisfy companion laws, which are then often relaxed from equality to inequality and overtake a role of a physical admissibility condition for weak s…
Solutions to a class of conservation laws with discontinuous flux are constructed relying on the Crandall-Liggett theory of nonlinear contractive semigroups~\cite{CL}. In particular, the paper studies the existence of backward Euler approximations, and their convergence to a unique entropy-admissible solution to the Cauchy problem. The proofs are achieved through the study of the backward Euler approximations to the viscous conservation laws.
A theorem due to Nail H. Ibragimov (2007) provides a connection between symmetries and conservation laws for arbitrary differential equations. The theorem is valid for any system of differential equations provided that the number of equations is equal to the number of dependent variables. In this paper we use the theorem to determine conservation laws for a nonlinear system of differential equations that represents a mathematical model for HIV transmission.
We establish conservation laws for the second order Kudryashov-Sinelshchikov equation, which models pressure waves in liquid with bubbles. For this purpose we use the method of Nail Ibragimov based on the notion of nonlinear self-adjointness.
We determine the Lie point symmetries of a class of BBM-KdV systems and establish its nonlinear self-adjointness. We then construct conservation laws via Ibragimov's Theorem.
Following Rivière's study of conservation laws for second order quasilinear systems with critical nonlinearty and Lamm/Rivière's generalization to fourth order, we consider similar systems of order $2m$. Typical examples are $m$-polyharmonic maps. Under natural conditions, we find a conservation law for weak solutions on $2m$-dimensional domains. This implies continuity of weak solutions.
