We establish a new homological lower bound for the Thurston norm on 1-cohomology of 3-manifolds. This generalizes previous results of C. McMullen, S. Harvey, and the author. We also establish an analogous lower bound for 1-cohomology of 2-dimensional CW-complexes.
We study the action of the mapping class group on the real homology of finite covers of a topological surface. We use the homological representation of the mapping class to construct a faithful infinite-dimensional representation of the mapping class group. We show that this representation detects the Nielsen-Thurston classification of each mapping class. We then discuss some examples that occur in the theory of braid groups and develop an analogous theory for automorphisms of free groups. We close with some open problems.
We introduce twisted Alexander norms of a compact connected orientable 3-manifold with first Betti number bigger than one generalizing norms of McMullen and Turaev. We show that twisted Alexander norms give lower bounds on the Thurston norm of a 3-manifold. Using these we completely determine the Thurston norm of many 3-manifolds which can not be determined by norms of McMullen and Turaev.
For sutured 3-manifolds M, there is a sutured Thurston norm due to Scharlemann. We show how depth one foliations of M and corresponding fibrations and the usual Thurston norm on the double of M are useful tools for computing this norm. In many examples, the faces of the unit ball of the sutured norm are related to cones of depth one foliations of M but examples indicate this is not a general relationship.
Thurston norms are invariants of 3-manifolds defined on their second homology vector spaces, and understanding the shape of their dual unit ball is a (widely) open problem. W. Thurston showed that every symmetric polygon in Z^2, whose vertices satisfy a parity property, is the dual unit ball of a Thurston norm on a 3-manifold. However, it is not known if the parity property on the vertices of polytopes is a sufficient condition in higher dimension or if their are polytopes, with mod 2 congruent vertices, that cannot be realized as dual unit balls of Thurston norms. In this article, we provide …
Using recent results of Agol, Przytycki-Wise and Wise we show that twisted Alexander polynomials detect the Thurston norm of any irreducible 3-manifold which is not a closed graph manifold.
A new lower bound on the complexity of a 3-manifold is given using the Z2-Thurston norm. This bound is shown to be sharp, and the minimal triangulations realising it are characterised using normal surfaces consisting entirely of quadrilateral discs.
We prove that, for a link $L$ in a rational homology 3--sphere, the link Floer homology detects the Thurston norm of its complement. This generalizes the previous results due to Ozsváth, Szabó and the author.
We show that a veering triangulation $τ$ specifies a face $σ$ of the Thurston norm ball of a closed three-manifold, and computes the Thurston norm in the cone over $σ$. Further, we show that $τ$ collates exactly the taut surfaces representing classes in the cone over $σ$ up to isotopy. The analysis includes nonlayered veering triangulations and nonfibered faces.
Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called cosmetic if they yield homeomorphic manifolds. For a null-homologous knot with certain conditions on the Thurston norm of the ambient manifold, if the knot admits cosmetic surgeries, then the surgery coefficients are equal up to sign.
We prove that the twisted Reidemeister torsion of a 3-manifold corresponding to a fibered class is monic and we show that it gives lower bounds on the Thurston norm. The former fixes a flawed proof in [FV10], the latter gives a quick alternative argument for the main theorem of [FK06].
We show that the Thurston norm of any irreducible 3-manifold can be detected using twisted Reidemeister torsions corresponding to integral representations and also corresponding to representations over finite fields. In particular our result holds for all graph manifolds, these are not covered by the earlier work of the first author and Vidussi.
We show that the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology give a lower bound to the the genus of one-sided Heegaard splittings and the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm. Using a result of Jaco--Rubinstein--Tillmann, this gives a lower bound to the complexity of certain closed $3$--manifolds. As an application, we compute the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm of the double branched cover of some closed 3--braids, and give upper and lower bounds for the complexity of these manifolds.
We present an overview of the study of the Thurston norm, introduced by W. P. Thurston in the seminal paper "A norm for the homology of 3-manifolds" (written in 1976 and published in 1986). We first review fundamental properties of the Thurston norm of a 3-manifold, including a construction of codimension-1 taut foliations from norm-minimizing embedded surfaces, established by D. Gabai. In the main part we describe relationships between the Thurston norm and other topological invariants of a 3-manifold: the Alexander polynomial and its various generalizations, Reidemeister torsion, the Seiberg…
We assign to a finite $CW$-complex and an element in its first cohomology group a twisted version of the $L^2$-Euler characteristic and study its main properties. In the case of an irreducible orientable $3$-manifold with empty or toroidal boundary and infinite fundamental group we identify it with the Thurston norm. We will use the $L^2$-Euler characteristic to address the problem whether the existence of a map inducing an epimorphism on fundamental groups implies an inequality of the Thurston norms.
For a compact, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold with toroidal boundary that is not the product of a torus and an interval or a cable space, each boundary torus has a finite set of slopes such that, if avoided, the Thurston norm of a Dehn filling behaves predictably. More precisely, for all but finitely many slopes, the Thurston norm of a class in the second homology of the filled manifold plus the so-called winding norm of the class will be equal to the Thurston norm of the corresponding class in the second homology of the unfilled manifold. This generalizes a result of Sela and is used to a…
In 1986, W. Thurston introduced a (possibly degenerate) norm on the first cohomology group of a 3-manifold. Inspired by this definition, Turaev introduced in 2002 a analogous norm on the first cohomology group of a finite 2-complex. We show that if N is the exterior of a link in a rational homology sphere, then the Thurston norm agrees with a suitable variation of Turaev's norm defined on any 2-skeleton of N.
A theory of transversely oriented spun-normal immersed surfaces in ideally triangulated 3--manifolds is developed in this paper, including linear functionals determining the boundary curves, Euler characteristic and homology class of these immersions. This is used to develop and implement an algorithm to compute the unit ball of the Thurston norm for cusped hyperbolic 3--manifolds of finite volume. As an application of independent interest, we give an upper bound on the minimal entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps of surfaces with number of cusps bounded linearly in genus.
Every element in the first cohomology group of a 3--manifold is dual to embedded surfaces. The Thurston norm measures the minimal `complexity' of such surfaces. For instance the Thurston norm of a knot complement determines the genus of the knot in the 3--sphere. We show that the degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials give lower bounds on the Thurston norm, generalizing work of McMullen and Turaev. Our bounds attain their most concise form when interpreted as the degrees of the Reidemeister torsion of a certain twisted chain complex. We show that these lower bounds give the correct genus bou…
Recently twisted and higher order Alexander polynomials were used by Cochran, Harvey, Friedl--Kim and Turaev to give lower bounds on the Thurston norm. We first show how Reidemeister torsion relates to these Alexander polynomials. We then give lower bounds on the Thurston norm in terms of the Reidemeister torsion which contain and extend all the above lower bounds and give an elegant reformulation of the bounds of Cochran, Harvey and Turaev. The Reidemeister torsion approach also gives a natural approach to proving and extending certain monotonicity results of Cochran and Harvey.
In a recent paper, McMullen showed an inequality between the Thurston norm and the Alexander norm of a 3-manifold. This generalizes the well-known fact that twice the genus of a knot is bounded from below by the degree of the Alexander polynomial. We extend the Bennequin inequality for links to an inequality for all points of the Thurston norm, if the manifold is a link complement. We compare these two inequalities on two classes of closed braids. In an additional section we discuss a conjectured inequality due to Morton for certain points of the Thurston norm. We prove Morton's conjecture for…
We construct an invariant called guts for second homology classes in irreducible 3-manifolds with toral boundary and non-degenerate Thurston norm. We prove that the guts of second homology classes in each Thurston cone are invariant under a natural condition. We show that the guts of different homology classes are related by sutured decompositions. As an application, an invariant of knot complements is given and is computed in a few interesting cases. Besides, we show that the dimension of a maximal simplex in a Kakimizu Complex is an invariant.
We describe a general method to compute the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Thurston norm for every $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology class in an orientable Seifert manifold with orientable orbit surface. Our main tools are pseudo-horizontal surfaces. We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of pseudo-horizontal surfaces, calculate the non-orientable genera for such surfaces, and detect their $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology classes. We then describe an algorithm to calculate the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Thurston norm of each $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology classes. We also present several interesting examples.
In this sequel to earlier papers by three of the authors, we obtain a new bound on the complexity of a closed 3--manifold, as well as a characterisation of manifolds realising our complexity bounds. As an application, we obtain the first infinite families of minimal triangulations of Seifert fibred spaces modelled on Thurston's geometry $\widetilde{\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})}.$
Given a triangulation of a closed, oriented, irreducible, atoroidal 3-manifold every oriented, incompressible surface may be isotoped into normal position relative to the triangulation. Such a normal oriented surface is then encoded by non-negative integer weights, 14 for each 3-simplex, that describe how many copies of each oriented normal disc type there are. The Euler characteristic and homology class are both linear functions of the weights. There is a convex polytope in the space of weights, defined by linear equations given by the combinatorics of the triangulation, whose image under the…
Let $L$ be an $n$-component link ($n>1$) with pairwise nonzero linking numbers in a rational homology $3$-sphere $Y$. Assume the link complement $X:=Y\setminusν(L)$ has nondegenerate Thurston norm. In this paper, we study when a Thurston norm-minimizing surface $S$ properly embedded in $X$ remains norm-minimizing after Dehn filling all boundary components of $X$ according to $\partial S$ and capping off $\partial S$ by disks. In particular, for $n=2$ the capped-off surface is norm-minimizing when $[S]$ lies outside of a finite set of rays in $H_2(X,\partial X;\mathbb{R})$. When $Y$ is an integ…
We show that the problem of determining whether a knot in the 3-sphere is non-trivial lies in NP. This is a consequence of the following more general result. The problem of determining whether the Thurston norm of a second homology class in a compact orientable 3-manifold is equal to a given integer is in NP. As a corollary, the problem of determining the genus of a knot in the 3-sphere is in NP. We also show that the problem of determining whether a compact orientable 3-manifold has incompressible boundary is in NP.
In this paper we use Heegaard Floer link homology to determine the dual Thurston polytope for pretzel links of the form P(-2r_1-1, 2q_1, -2q_2, 2r_2+1) where r_i and q_i are positive integers. We apply this result to determine the Thurston norms of spanning surfaces for the individual link components, and we explicitly construct norm-realizing examples of such surfaces.
Let M be an oriented irreducible 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group and empty or toroidal boundary. Consider any element ϕin the first cohomology of M with integral coefficients. Then one can define the ϕ-twisted L^2-torsion function of the universal covering which is a function from the set of positive real numbers to the set of real numbers. By earlier work of the second author and Schick the evaluation at t=1 determines the volume. In this paper we show that its degree, which is a number extracted from its asymptotic behavior at 0 and at infinity, agrees with the Thurston norm of ϕ.
We give a brief summary of some of our work and our joint work with Stephan Tillmann on solving Thurston's equation and Haken equation on triangulated 3-manifolds in this paper. Several conjectures on the existence of solutions to Thurston's equation and Haken equation are made. Resolutions of these conjecture will lead to a new proof of the Poincaré conjecture without using the Ricci flow. We approach these conjectures by a finite dimensional variational principle so that its critical points are related to solutions to Thurston's gluing equation and Haken's normal surface equation. The action…
We study when the Thurston norm is detected by twisted Alexander polynomials associated to representations of the 3-manifold group to SL(2, C). Specifically, we show that the hyperbolic torsion polynomial determines the genus for a large class of hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere which includes all special arborescent knots and many knots whose ordinary Alexander polynomial is trivial. This theorem follows from results showing that the tautness of certain sutured manifolds can be certified by checking that they are a product from the point of view of homology with coefficients twisted by an SL(…
For a 3-manifold M, McMullen derived from the Alexander polynomial of M a norm on H^1(M, R) called the Alexander norm. He showed that the Thurston norm on H^1(M, R), which measures the complexity of a dual surface, is an upper bound for the Alexander norm. He asked if these two norms were equal on all of H^1(M,R) when M fibers over the circle. Here, I give examples which show that the answer to this question is emphatically no. This question is related to the faithfulness of the Gassner representations of the braid groups. The key tool used to understand this question is the Bieri-Neumann-Stre…
We prove that twisted correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology provide lower bounds on the Thurston norm of certain cohomology classes determined by the strong concordance class of a 2-component link $L$ in $S^3$. We then specialise this procedure to knots in $S^2\times S^1$, and obtain a lower bound on their geometric winding number. Furthermore we produce an obstruction for a knot in $S^3$ to have untwisting number 1. We then provide an infinite family of null-homologous knots with increasing geometric winding number, on which the bound is sharp.
We propose a finite dimensional variational principle on triangulated 3-manifolds so that its critical points are related to solutions to Thurston's gluing equation and Haken's normal surface equation. The action functional is the volume. This is a generalization of an earlier program by Casson and Rivin for compact 3-manifolds with torus boundary. Combining the result in this paper and the work of Futer-Guéritaud, Segerman-Tillmann and Luo-Tillmann, we obtain a new finite dimensional variational formulation of the Poncare-conjecture. This provides a step toward a new proof the Poincaré conjec…
In 1976 Thurston associated to a $3$-manifold $N$ a marked polytope in $H_1(N;\mathbb{R}),$ which measures the minimal complexity of surfaces representing homology classes and determines all fibered classes in $H^1(N;\mathbb{R})$. Recently the first and the last author associated to a presentation $π$ with two generators and one relator a marked polytope in $H_1(π;\mathbb{R})$ and showed that it determines the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariant of $π$. In this paper, we show that if the fundamental group of a 3-manifold $N$ admits such a presentation $π$, then the corresponding marked polytopes i…
We show that link Floer homology detects the Thurston norm of a link complement. As an application, we show that the Thurston polytope of an alternating link is dual to the Newton polytope of its multi-variable Alexander polynomial. To illustrate these techniques, we also compute the Thurston polytopes of several specific link complements.
In a previous paper, the second author defined integer-valued functions delta_n on the first cohomology of a 3-manifold, generalizing McMullen's Alexander norm. It was shown that these functions give lower bounds on the Thurston norm. In this paper, we reformulate these invariants in terms of Reidemeister torsion over a non-commutative multivariable Laurent polynomial ring. This allows us to show that these functions are semi-norms.
We study the Thurston norm on the second homology of a 3-manifold M, which is the surface bundle over the circle with a pseudo-Anosov monodromy. A novelty of our approach consists in the application of the C*-algebras to a problem in topology. Namely, one associates to M a C*-algebra, whose K-theory gives rise to an algebraic number field K. It is shown, that the trace function on the ring of integers of K induces a norm on the second homology of M. The norm coincides with the Thurston norm on the second homology of M.
In 1976, Thurston proved that taut foliations on closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds have Euler class of norm at most one, and conjectured that conversely, any integral second cohomology class with norm equal to one is the Euler class of a taut foliation. This is the first from a series of two papers that together give a negative answer to Thurston's conjecture. Here counterexamples have been constructed conditional on the fully marked surface theorem. In the second paper, joint with David Gabai, a proof of the fully marked surface theorem is given.
We show that the problem of tiling the Euclidean plane with a finite set of polygons (up to translation) boils down to prove the existence of zeros of a non-negative convex function defined on a finite-dimensional simplex. This function is a generalisation, in the framework of branched surfaces, of the Thurston semi-norm originally defined for compact $3$-manifolds.
We discuss some applications of 3-manifold topology to cryptography. In particular, we propose a public-key and a symmetric-key cryptographic scheme based on the Thurston norm on the first cohomology of hyperbolic manifolds.
We show that a regular isomorphism of profinite completion of the fundamental groups of two 3-manifolds $N_1$ and $N_2$ induces an isometry of the Thurston norms and a bijection between the fibered classes. We study to what extent does the profinite completion of knot groups distinguish knots and show that it distinguishes each torus knot and the figure eight knot among all knots. We show also that it distinguishes between hyperbolic knots with cyclically commensurable complements under the assumption that their Alexander polynomials have at least one zero which is not a root of unity.
We investigate Friedl-Lück's universal $L^2$-torsion for descending HNN extensions of finitely generated free groups, and so in particular for $F_n$-by-$\mathbb{Z}$ groups. This invariant induces a semi-norm on the first cohomology of the group which is an analogue of the Thurston norm for $3$-manifold groups. We prove that this Thurston semi-norm is an upper bound for the Alexander semi-norm defined by McMullen, as well as for the higher Alexander semi-norms defined by Harvey. The same inequalities are known to hold for $3$-manifold groups. We also prove that the Newton polytopes of the unive…
We define an infinite sequence of new invariants, delta_n, of a group G that measure the size of the successive quotients of the derived series of G. In the case that G is the fundamental group of a 3-manifold, we obtain new 3-manifold invariants. These invariants are closely related to the topology of the 3-manifold. They give lower bounds for the Thurston norm which provide better estimates than the bound established by McMullen using the Alexander norm. We also show that the delta_n give obstructions to a 3-manifold fibering over S^1 and to a 3-manifold being Seifert fibered. Moreover, we s…
For closed 3-manifolds, Heegaard Floer homology is related to the Thurston norm through results due to Ozsváth and Szabó, Ni, and Hedden. For example, given a closed 3-manifold Y, there is a bijection between vertices of the HF^+(Y) polytope carrying the group Z and the faces of the Thurston norm unit ball that correspond to fibrations of Y over the unit circle. Moreover, the Thurston norm unit ball of Y is dual to the polytope of \underline{\hfhat}(Y). We prove a similar bijection and duality result for a class of 3-manifolds with boundary called sutured manifolds. A sutured manifold is essen…
Let N be a closed, oriented 3-manifold. A folklore conjecture states that $S^{1} \times N$ admits a symplectic structure if and only if $N$ admits a fibration over the circle. We will prove this conjecture in the case when N is irreducible and its fundamental group satisfies appropriate subgroup separability conditions. This statement includes 3-manifolds with vanishing Thurston norm, graph manifolds and 3-manifolds with surface subgroup separability (a condition satisfied conjecturally by all hyperbolic 3-manifolds). Our result covers, in particular, the case of 0-framed surgeries along knots…
Let $M^3$ be an oriented 3-manifold. We investigate when one of the fibers or a combination of fiber components, $F_{best}$, of a \emph{harmonic} map $f: M^3 \to S^1$ with Morse-type singularities delivers the Thurston norm $χ_-([F_{best}])$ of its homology class $[F_{best}] \in H_2(M^3; \Z)$. In particular, for a map $f$ with connected fibers and any well-positioned oriented surface $Σ\subset M$ in the homology class of a fiber, we show that the Thurston number $χ_-(Σ)$ satisfies an inequality $$χ_-(Σ) \geq χ_-(F_{best}) - ρ^\circ(Σ, f)\cdot Var_{χ_-}(f).$$ Here the variation $Var_{χ_-}(f)$ i…
