In a recent paper, McMullen showed an inequality between the Thurston norm and the Alexander norm of a 3-manifold. This generalizes the well-known fact that twice the genus of a knot is bounded from below by the degree of the Alexander polynomial.
We extend the Bennequin inequality for links to an inequality for all points of the Thurston norm, if the manifold is a link complement. We compare these two inequalities on two classes of closed braids.
In an additional section we discuss a conjectured inequality due to Morton for certain points of the Thurston norm. We prove Morton's conjecture for closed 3-braids.
Higher-Order Polynomial Invariants of 3-Manifolds Giving Lower Bounds for the Thurston Norm
We investigate Friedl-Lück's universal $L^2$-torsion for descending HNN extensions of finitely generated free groups, and so in particular for $F_n$-by-$\mathbb{Z}$ groups. This invariant induces a semi-norm on the first cohomology of the group which is an analogue of the Thurston norm for $3$-manifold groups. We prove that this Thurston semi-norm is an upper bound for the Alexander semi-norm defined by McMullen, as well as for the higher Alexander semi-norms defined by Harvey. The same inequalities are known to hold for $3$-manifold groups. We also prove that the Newton polytopes of the unive…
We construct an invariant called guts for second homology classes in irreducible 3-manifolds with toral boundary and non-degenerate Thurston norm. We prove that the guts of second homology classes in each Thurston cone are invariant under a natural condition. We show that the guts of different homology classes are related by sutured decompositions. As an application, an invariant of knot complements is given and is computed in a few interesting cases. Besides, we show that the dimension of a maximal simplex in a Kakimizu Complex is an invariant.
Let $L$ be an $n$-component link ($n>1$) with pairwise nonzero linking numbers in a rational homology $3$-sphere $Y$. Assume the link complement $X:=Y\setminusν(L)$ has nondegenerate Thurston norm. In this paper, we study when a Thurston norm-minimizing surface $S$ properly embedded in $X$ remains norm-minimizing after Dehn filling all boundary components of $X$ according to $\partial S$ and capping off $\partial S$ by disks. In particular, for $n=2$ the capped-off surface is norm-minimizing when $[S]$ lies outside of a finite set of rays in $H_2(X,\partial X;\mathbb{R})$. When $Y$ is an integ…
In this paper we present a classical construction of the Hyperbolic structure of the complement of a link in the sense of Thurston for the particular case of the Borromean rings link. As this is nothing new, the aim of this paper is to complete the literature about this topic in the particular case of the Borromean rings complement.
We prove an explicit characterization of the points in Thurston's Master Teapot. This description can be implemented algorithmically to test whether a point in $\mathbb{C} \times \mathbb{R}$ belongs to the complement of the Master Teapot. As an application, we show that the intersection of the Master Teapot with the unit cylinder is not symmetrical under reflection through the plane that is the product of the imaginary axis of $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{R}$.
This paper illustrates a computational approach to Culler-Morgan-Shalen theory using ideal triangulations, spun-normal surfaces and tropical geometry. Certain affine algebraic sets associated to the Whitehead link complement as well as their logarithmic limit sets are computed. The projective solution space of spun-normal surface theory is related to the space of incompressible surfaces and to the unit ball of the Thurston norm. It is shown that all boundary curves of the Whitehead link complement are strongly detected by its character variety. The specific results obtained can be used to stud…
We enumerate all the principal congruence link complements in $S^3$, there by answering a question of W. Thurston. Related articles: "Technical Report: All Principal Congruence Link Groups" (arXiv:1902.04722), "All Known Principal Congruence Links" (arXiv:1902.04426).
We establish a link between the holomorphic derivatives of Thurston's hyperbolic gluing equations on an ideally triangulated finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold and the cohomology of the sheaf of infinitesimal isometries. Moreover, we provide a geometric reformulation of the non-abelian Reidemeister torsion corresponding to the adjoint of the monodromy representation of the hyperbolic structure. These results are then applied to the study of the `1-loop Conjecture' of Dimofte-Garoufalidis, which we generalize to arbitrary 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We rigorously verify the generalized co…
By work of W. Thurston, knots and links in the 3-sphere are known to either be torus links, or to contain an essential torus in their complement, or to be hyperbolic, in which case a unique hyperbolic volume can be calculated for their complement. We employ a construction of Turaev to associate a family of hyperbolic 3-manifolds of finite volume to any classical or virtual link, even if non-hyperbolic. These are in turn used to define the Turaev volume of a link, which is the minimal volume among all the hyperbolic 3-manifolds associated via this Turaev construction. In the case of a classical…
We analyze four-dimensional symplectic manifolds of type $X=S^1 \times M^3$ where $M^3$ is an open $3$-manifold admitting inequivalent fibrations leading to inequivalent symplectic structures on $X$. For the case where $M^3 \subset S^3$ is the complement of a $4$-component link constructed by McMullen-Taubes, we provide a general algorithm for computing the monodromy of the fibrations explicitly. We use this algorithm to show that certain inequivalent symplectic structures are distinguished by the dimensions of the primitive cohomologies of differential forms on $X$. We also calculate the prim…
We propose the Volume Conjecture for the relative Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of a closed oriented $3$-manifold with a colored framed link inside it whose asymptotic behavior is related to the volume and the Chern-Simons invariant of the hyperbolic cone metric on the manifold with singular locus the link and cone angles determined by the coloring. We prove the conjecture in the case that the ambient $3$-manifold is obtained by doing an integral surgery along some components of a fundamental shadow link and the complement of the link in the ambient manifold is homeomorphic to the fundamental …
