The Thurston norm via spun-normal immersions

A theory of transversely oriented spun-normal immersed surfaces in ideally triangulated 3--manifolds is developed in this paper, including linear functionals determining the boundary curves, Euler characteristic and homology class of these immersions. This is used to develop and implement an algorithm to compute the unit ball of the Thurston norm for cusped hyperbolic 3--manifolds of finite volume. As an application of independent interest, we give an upper bound on the minimal entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps of surfaces with number of cusps bounded linearly in genus.

Incompressible surfaces and spunnormal form

Suppose M is a cusped finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold and T is an ideal triangulation of M with essential edges. We show that any incompressible surface S in M that is not a virtual fiber can be isotoped into spunnormal form in T . The proof is based directly on ideas of W. Thurston.

Normal surfaces in topologically finite 3-manifolds

The concept of a normal surface in a triangulated, compact 3-manifold was generalised by Thurston to a spun-normal surface in a non-compact 3-manifold with ideal triangulation. This paper defines a boundary curve map which takes a spun-normal surface to an element of the direct sum of the first homology groups of the vertex linking surfaces. The boundary curve map is used to study the topology of a spun-normal surface as well as to determine the dimension of the projective solution space of the algebraic equations arising from the quadrilateral coordinates of spun-normal surfaces.

Ideal triangulations of 3--manifolds I: spun normal surface theory

In this paper, we will compute the dimension of the space of spun and ordinary normal surfaces in an ideal triangulation of the interior of a compact 3-manifold with incompressible tori or Klein bottle components. Spun normal surfaces have been described in unpublished work of Thurston. Incompressibility criteria for spun-normal surfaces

We give a simple sufficient condition for a spun-normal surface in an ideal triangulation to be incompressible, namely that it is a vertex surface with non-empty boundary which has a quadrilateral in each tetrahedron. While this condition is far from being necessary, it is powerful enough to give two new results: the existence of alternating knots with non-integer boundary slopes, and a proof of the Slope Conjecture for a large class of 2-fusion knots. Crossing numbers and rotation numbers of cycles in a plane immersed graph

For any generic immersion of a Petersen graph into a plane, the number of crossing points between two edges of distance one is odd. The sum of the crossing numbers of all $5$-cycles is odd. The sum of the rotation numbers of all $5$-cycles is even. We show analogous results for $6$-cycles, $8$-cycles and $9$-cycles. For any Legendrian spatial embedding of a Petersen graph, there exists a $5$-cycle that is not an unknot with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number, and the sum of all Thurston-Bennequin numbers of the cycles is $7$ times the sum of all Thurston-Bennequin numbers of the $5$-cycles. Tropical varieties associated to ideal triangulations: The Whitehead link complement

This paper illustrates a computational approach to Culler-Morgan-Shalen theory using ideal triangulations, spun-normal surfaces and tropical geometry. Certain affine algebraic sets associated to the Whitehead link complement as well as their logarithmic limit sets are computed. The projective solution space of spun-normal surface theory is related to the space of incompressible surfaces and to the unit ball of the Thurston norm. A knot without a nonorientable essential spanning surface

This note gives the first example of a hyperbolic knot in the 3-sphere that lacks a nonorientable essential spanning surface; this disproves the Strong Neuwirth Conjecture formulated by Ozawa and Rubinstein. Moreover, this knot has no even strict boundary slopes, disproving the Even Boundary Slope Conjecture of the same authors. The proof is a rigorous calculation using Thurston's spun-normal surfaces in the spirit of Haken's original normal surface algorithms.

How to Fold a Manifold

Techniques for constructing codimension 2 embeddings and immersions of the 2 and 3-fold branched covers of the 3 and 4-dimensional spheres are presented. These covers are in braided form, and it is in this sense that they are folded.
