The Thurston polytope for four-stranded pretzel links

In this paper we use Heegaard Floer link homology to determine the dual Thurston polytope for pretzel links of the form P(-2r_1-1, 2q_1, -2q_2, 2r_2+1) where r_i and q_i are positive integers. We apply this result to determine the Thurston norms of spanning surfaces for the individual link components, and we explicitly construct norm-realizing examples of such surfaces.

Slice Implies Mutant Ribbon for Odd, 5-Stranded Pretzel Knots

A pretzel knot $K$ is called $odd$ if all its twist parameters are odd, and $mutant$ $ribbon$ if it is mutant to a simple ribbon knot. We prove that the family of odd, 5-stranded pretzel knots satisfies a weaker version of the Slice-Ribbon Conjecture: All slice, odd, 5-stranded pretzel knots are $mutant$ $ribbon$. The slice-ribbon conjecture for 3-stranded pretzel knots

We determine the smooth concordance order of the 3-stranded pretzel knots P(p,q,r) with p,q,r odd. We show that each one of finite order is, in fact, ribbon, thereby proving the slice-ribbon conjecture for this family of knots. As corollaries we give new proofs of results first obtained by Fintushel-Stern and Casson-Gordon.

Non-slice 3-stranded pretzel knots

Greene-Jabuka and Lecuona confirmed the slice-ribbon conjecture for 3-stranded pretzel knots except for an infinite family $P(a,-a-2,-\frac{(a+1)^2}{2})$ where $a$ is an odd integer greater than $1$. Lecuona and Miller showed that $P(a,-a-2,-\frac{(a+1)^2}{2})$ are not slice unless $a\equiv 1, 11, 37, 47, 59 \pmod{60}$. In this note, we show that four-fifths of the remaining knots in the family are not slice.

Knot Floer homology of some even 3-stranded pretzel knots

We apply the theory of "peculiar modules" for the Floer homology of 4-ended tangles developed by Zibrowius (specifically, the immersed curve interpretation of the tangle invariants) to compute the Knot Floer Homology ($\widehat{HFK}$) of 3-stranded pretzel knots of the form ${P(2a,-2b-1,\pm(2c+1))}$ for positive integers $a,b,c$. This corrects a previous computation by Eftekhary; in particular, for the case of ${P(2a,-2b-1,2c+1)}$ where $b<c$ and $b<a-1$, it turns out the rank of $\widehat{HFK}$ is larger than that predicted by that work.

The Khovanov homology of 3-strand pretzels, revisited

We compute the reduced Khovanov homology of 3-stranded pretzel links. The coefficients are the integers with the "even" sign assignment. In particular, we show that the only homologically thin, non-quasi-alternating 3-stranded pretzels are P(-p,p,r) with p an odd integer and r greater than or equal to p (these were shown to be homologically thin by Starkston and Qazaqzeh).

On the slice-ribbon conjecture for pretzel knots

We give a necessary, and in some cases sufficient, condition for sliceness inside the family of pretzel knots $P (p_1,...,p_n)$ with one $p_i$ even. Traceless SU(2) representations of 2-stranded tangles

Given a 2-stranded tangle in a $\ZZ/2$ homology ball, $T\subset Y$, we investigate the character variety $R(Y,T)$ of conjugacy classes of traceless SU(2) representations of $π_1(Y\setminus T)$. In particular we completely determine the subspace of binary dihedral representations, and identify all of $R(Y,T)$ for many tangles naturally associated to knots in S^3. Peculiar modules for 4-ended tangles

With a 4-ended tangle $T$, we associate a Heegaard Floer invariant $\operatorname{CFT^\partial}(T)$, the peculiar module of $T$. Based on Zarev's bordered sutured Heegaard Floer theory, we prove a glueing formula for this invariant which recovers link Floer homology $\operatorname{\widehat{HFL}}$.
