The maximal number of automorphisms of a Mumford curve over a non-archimedean valued field of positive characteristic is known. In this note, the unique family of curves that attains this bound in genus not equal to 5,6,7 or 8 is explicitly determined, as is its automorphism group.
A Mumford curve of genus g=5,6,7 or 8 over a non-archimedean field of characteristic p (such that if p=0, the residue field characteristic exceeds 5) has at most 12(g-1) automorphisms. In this paper, all curves that attain this bound and their automorphism groups (called of Lame type) are explicitly determined.
We use rigid analytic uniformization by Schottky groups to give a bound for the order of the abelian subgroups of the automorphism group of a Mumford curve in terms of its genus.
Riemann Existence Theorems for Galois covers of Mumford curves by Mumford curves are stated and proven. As an application, all finite groups are realised as full automorphism groups of Mumford curves in characteristic zero.
A Mumford group is a discontinuous subgroup $Γ$ of PGL(2,K), where K denotes a non archimedean valued field, such that the quotient by $Γ$ is a curve of genus 0. As abstract group $Γ$ is an amalgam of a finite tree of finite groups. For K of positive characteristic the large collection of amalgams having two or three branch points is classified. Using these data Mumford curves with a large group of automorphisms are discovered. A long combinatorial proof, involving the classification of the finite simple groups, is needed for establishing an upper bound for the order of the group of automorphi…
A Mumford curve of genus g (>1) over a non-archimedean valued field k of positive characteristic has at most max{12(g-1), 2 g^(1/2) (g^(1/2)+1)^2} automorphisms. This bound is sharp in the sense that there exist Mumford curves of arbitrary high genus that attain it (they are fibre products of suitable Artin-Schreier curves). The proof provides (via its action on the Bruhat-Tits tree) a classification of discontinuous subgroups of PGL(2,k) that are normalizers of Schottky groups of Mumford curves with more than 12(g-1) automorphisms. As an application, it is shown that all automorphisms of the …
We study a variation of Mumford's quotient for the action of a maximal torus $T$ on a flag variety $G/B$ depending on projective embedding $G/B \hookrightarrow \Bbb P(V(χ))$, where $T$-linearization is induced by the standard $G$-linearization. We describe the linear spans of the supports of semistable orbits, that allow us to calculate the rank of the Picard group of quotient $(G/B)^{ss}//T$, when $G$ does not contain simple factors of type $A_n$.
We study strong exceptional collections of line bundles on Fano toric Deligne-Mumford stacks $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$ with rank of Picard group at most two. We prove that any strong exceptional collection of line bundles generates the derived category of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$, as long as the number of elements in the collection equals the rank of the (Grothendieck) $K$-theory group of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$.
We compute the fundamental groups of non-singular analytic Deligne-Mumford curves, classify the simply connected ones, and classify analytic Deligne-Mumford curves by their uniformization type. As a result, we find an explicit presentation of an arbitrary Deligne-Mumford curve as a quotient stack. Along the way, we compute the automorphism 2-groups of weighted projective stacks $\mathcal{P}(n_1,n_2,...,n_r)$. We also discuss connections with the theory of F-groups, 2-groups, and Bass-Serre theory of graphs of groups.
An elementary proof of a theorem of Montanucci and Zini on the automorphism group of generalized Aritn-Schreier-Mumford curves is presented, with the argument of Korchmaros and Montanucci for Artin-Schreier-Mumford curves being improved. Although the characteristic of a ground field is assumed to be odd in the article of Montanucci and Zini, the proof in the present article is applicable to the case of characteristic two also. As an application of the theorem of Montanucci and Zini, the arrangement of Galois points or Galois lines for the generalized Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve is determined.
We provide a Hilbert-Mumford Criterion for actions of reductive groups $G$ on $Q$-factorial complex varieties. The result allows to construct open subsets admitting a good quotient by $G$ from certain maximal open subsets admitting a good quotient by a maximal torus of $G$. As an application, we show how to obtain all invariant open subsets with good quotient for a given $G$-action on a complete $Q$-factorial toric variety.
Let the special linear group $G := SL_{2}$ act regularly on a $Q$-factorial variety $X$. Consider a maximal torus $T \subset G$ and its normalizer $N \subset G$. We prove: If $U \subset X$ is a maximal open $N$-invariant subset admitting a good quotient $U \to U // N$ with a divisorial quotient space, then the intersection $W(U)$ of all translates $g \dot U$ is open in $X$ and admits a good quotient $W(U) \to W(U) // G$ with a divisorial quotient space. Conversely, we obtain that every maximal open $G$-invariant subset $W \subset X$ admitting a good quotient $W \to W // G$ with a divisorial qu…
In this paper, we investigate properties of automorphism groups of function fields in one variable in relation to its reductions with respect to special valuations. In 1969, Deligne and Mumford proved that there exists a natural injective homomorphism between the automorphism groups of $\mathcal{X}_η$ and any special fibre of $\mathcal{X}.$ Here, we give a generalisation of this theorem in function field setting of Deuring's theory of constant reductions.
For a power $q$ of a prime $p$, the Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve $ASM(q)$ of genus $g=(q-1)^2$ is the nonsingular model $\mathcal{X}$ of the irreducible plane curve with affine equation $(X^q+X)(Y^q+Y)=c,\, c\neq 0,$ defined over a field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic $p$. The Artin-Schreier-Mumford curves are known from the study of algebraic curves defined over a non-Archimedean valuated field since for $|c|<1$ they are curves with a large solvable automorphism group of order $2(q-1)q^2 =2\sqrt{g}(\sqrt{g}+1)^2$, far away from the Hurwitz bound $84(g-1)$ valid in zero characteristic. In this…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q=p^h$ with $p>2$ prime and $h>1$, and let $\mathbb{F}_{\bar{q}}$ be a subfield of $\mathbb{F}_q$. From any two $\bar{q}$-linearized polynomials $L_1,L_2 \in \overline{\mathbb{F}}_q[T]$ of degree $q$, we construct an ordinary curve $\mathcal{X}_{(L_1,L_2)}$ of genus $(q-1)^2$ which is a generalized Artin-Schreier cover of the projective line $\mathbb{P}^1$. The automorphism group of $\mathcal{X}_{(L_1,L_2)}$ over the algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$ contains a semidirect product $Σ\rtimes Γ$ of an elementary abelian …
Evaluating the twisted Morita-Mumford classes bar(h)_p on the Artin braid group B_n, we give the stable algebraic independence of the bar(h)_p's on the automorphism group of the free group, Aut(F_n). This is sharper than the results we obtained by restricting them to the mapping class group.
Assume that the local universal deformation of a Calabi-Yau 3-manifold X has an automorphism which does not act by 1 or -1 on the third cohomology. We show that the $F^2$ bundle in the Variation of Hodge structures of each maximal family containing $X$ is constant in this case. Thus X cannot be a fiber of a maximal family with maximally unipotent monodromy, if such an automorphism exists. Moreover we classify the possible actions of such an automorphism on the third cohomology, construct examples and show that the period domain is a complex ball containing a dense set of complex multiplication…
We construct explicitly a family of proper subgroups of the tame automorphism group of affine three-space (in any characteristic) which are generated by the affine subgroup and a non-affine tame automorphism. One important corollary is the titular result that settles negatively the open question (in characteristic zero) of whether the affine subgroup is a maximal subgroup of the tame automorphism group. We also prove that all groups of this family have the structure of an amalgamated free product of the affine group and a finite group over their intersection.
We show that every algebraic group scheme over a field with at least 8 elements can be realized as the group of automorphisms of a nonassociative algebra. This is only a modest improvement of the theorem of Gordeev and Popov (2003), but it allows us to give a new characterization of algebraic Lie algebras and to simplify the standard descriptions of Mumford--Tate domains and Shimura varieties as moduli spaces. Once the original argument of Gordeev and Popov has been rewritten in the language of schemes, we find that it also applies to algebraic groups over discrete valuation rings.
In the last years the biregular automorphisms of the Deligne-Mumford's and Hassett's compactifications of the moduli space of n-pointed genus g smooth curves have been extensively studied by A. Bruno and the authors. In this paper we give a survey of these recent results and extend our techniques to some moduli spaces appearing as intermediate steps of the Kapranov's and Keel's realizations of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$, and to the degenerations of Hassett's spaces obtained by allowing zero weights.
Using elliptic structures, we show that any supersingular K3 surface of Artin invariant $1$ in characteristic $p \not= 5$, $7$, $13$ has an automorphism the entropy of which is the natural logarithm of a Salem number of degree $22$.
We show that the Mathieu groups $M_{22}$ and $M_{11}$ can act on the supersingular $K3$ surface with Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 11 as symplectic automorphisms. More generally we show that all maximal subgroups of the Mathieu group $M_{23}$ with three orbits on 24 letters act on a supersingular $K3$ surface with Artin invariant 1 in a suitable characteristic.
In this paper we prove the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture for connected curves. We also investigate the structure of connected curves for which this bound is optimal. In particular, we construct connected curves of arbitrarily high degree in projective 4-space having maximal regularity, but no extremal secants. We also show that any connected curve in projective 3-space of degree at least 5 that has no linear components and has maximal regularity has an extremal secant.
In this paper we compute the automorphism group of the curves $\mathcal{X}_{a,b,n,s}$ and $\mathcal{Y}_{n,s}$ introduced in Tafazolian et al. in 2016 as new examples of maximal curves which cannot be covered by the Hermitian curve. They arise as subcovers of the first generalized GK curve (GGS curve). As a result, a new characterization of the GK curve, as a member of this family, is obtained.
We study the action of the group of automorphisms of the projective plane on the Maruyama scheme of sheaves $\mathcal{M}_{P^{2}}(r,c_{1,}c_{2})$ of rank $r$ and Chern classes $c_{1}=0$ and $c_{2}=n$ and obtain sufficient conditions for unstability in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory. The conditions are in terms of the splitting behaviour of sheaves when restricted to lines in the projective plane. A very strong parallel is observed with Mumford's theory for the action of the automorphism group of the projective plane on the spaces of curves of a fixed degree.

We study projective surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ (with $r \geq 5$) of maximal sectional regularity and degree $d > r$, hence surfaces for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(C)$ of a general hyperplane section curve $C = X \cap \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ takes the maximally possible value $d-r+3$. We show that each of these surfaces is either a cone over a curve $C \subset \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ of maximal regularity or else a birational outer linear projection of a smooth rational surface scroll $\widetilde{X} \subset \mathbb{P}^{d+1}$. We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of th…
We study the maximal Salem degree of automorphisms of K3 surfaces via elliptic fibrations. By generalizing \cite{EOY14}, we establish a characterization of such maximum in terms of elliptic fibrations with infinite automorphism groups. As an application, we show that any supersingular K3 surface in odd characteristic has an automorphism the entropy of which is the natural logarithm of a Salem number of degree $22$.
This paper is concerned with the formulation of a non-pertubative theory of the bosonic string. We introduce a formal group $G$ which we propose as the ``universal moduli space'' for such a formulation. This is motivated because $G$ establishes a natural link between representations of the Virasoro algebra and the moduli space of curves. Among other properties of $G$ it is shown that a ``local'' version of the Mumford formula holds on $G$.
In this article we determine the maximal possible order of the automorphism group of the form $ag + b$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers, of a complex three and four-dimensional family of compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, appearing for all genus. In addition, we construct and describe explicit complex three and four-dimensional families possessing these maximal number of automorphisms.
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be the finite field of order $q^2$, $q=p^h$ with $p$ prime. It is commonly atribute to J.P. Serre the fact that any curve $\mathbb{F}$-covered by the Hermitian curve $\mathcal{H}_{q+1}:\, y^{q+1}=x^q+x$ is also $\mathbb{F}$-maximal. Nevertheless, the converse is not true as the Giulietti-Korchmáros example shows provided that $q>8$ and $h\equiv 0\pmod{3}$. In this paper, we show that if an $\mathbb{F}$-maximal curve $\mathcal{X}$ of genus $g\geq 2$ where $q=p$ is such that $|Aut(\mathcal{X})|>84(g-1)$ then $\mathcal{X}$ is Galois-covered by $\mathcal{H}_{p+1}$. Also, we show t…
We study automorphism groups of smooth quintic threefolds. Especially, we describe all the maximal ones with explicit examples of target quintic threefolds. There are exactly $22$ such groups.
In 1895 Wiman introduced a Riemann surface $\mathcal{W}$ of genus $6$ over the complex field $\mathbb{C}$ defined by the homogeneous equation $\mathcal{W}:X^6+Y^6+Z^6+(X^2+Y^2+Z^2)(X^4+Y^4+Z^4)-12X^2 Y^2 Z^2=0$, and showed that its full automorphism group is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_5$. The curve $\mathcal{W}$ was previously studied as a curve defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ where $p$ is a prime, and necessary and sufficient conditions for its maximality over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ were obtained. In this paper we first show that the result of Wiman concerning the automor…
We study projective surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ (with $r \geq 5$) of maximal sectional regularity and degree $d > r$, hence surfaces for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg(\mathcal{C})$ of a general hyperplane section curve $\mathcal{C} = X \cap \mathbb{P}^{r-1}$ takes the maximally possible value $d-r+3$. We use the classification of varieties of maximal sectional regularity of \cite{BLPS1} to see that these surfaces are either particular divisors on a smooth rational $3$-fold scroll $S(1,1,1)\subset \mathbb{P}^5$, or else admit a plane $\mathbb{F} = \mathbb{P}^2 \subset \ma…
We classify the symplectic automorphism groups for cubic fourfolds. The main inputs are the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds and the classification of the fixed-point sublattices of the Leech lattice. Among the highlights of our results, we note that there are 34 possible groups of symplectic automorphisms, with 6 maximal cases. The six maximal cases correspond to 8 non-isomorphic, and isolated in moduli, cubic fourfolds; six of them previously identified by other authors. Finally, the Fermat cubic fourfold has the largest possible order (174,960) for the automorphism group (non-nece…
Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ be the moduli stack parametrizing weighted stable curves, and let $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ be its coarse moduli space. These spaces have been introduced by B. Hassett, as compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and $M_{g,n}$ respectively, by assigning rational weights $A = (a_{1},...,a_{n})$, $0< a_{i} \leq 1$ to the markings. In particular, the classical Deligne-Mumford compactification arises for $a_1 = ... = a_n = 1$. In genus zero some of these spaces appear as intermediate steps of the blow-up construction of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ developed by M. Kapra…
From the degree zero part of logarithmic vector fields along an algebraic hypersurface singularity we indentify the maximal multihomogeneity of a defining equation in form of a maximal algebraic torus in the embedded automorphism group. We show that all such maximal tori are conjugate and in one-to-one correspondence to maxmimal tori in the degree zero jet of the embedded automorphism group. The result is motivated by Kyoji Saito's characterization of quasihomogeneity for isolated hypersurface singularities and extends its formal version and a result of Hauser and Mueller.
Let $Y$ be an abelian variety over a subfield $k \subset \mathbb{C}$ that is of finite type over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that if the Mumford-Tate conjecture for $Y$ is true, then also some refined integral and adelic conjectures due to Serre are true for $Y$. In particular, if a certain Hodge-maximality condition is satisfied, we obtain an adelic open image theorem for the Galois representation on the (full) Tate module of $Y$. Our second main result is an (unconditional) adelic open image theorem for K3 surfaces. The proofs of these results rely on the study of a natural representation of the …
Let $U$ be a maximal unipotent subgroup of a connected semisimple group $G$ and $U'$ the derived group of $U$. If $X$ is an affine $G$-variety, then the algebra of $U'$-invariants, $k[X]^U'$, is finitely generated and the quotient morphism $π: X \to X//U'$ is well-defined. In this article, we study properties of such quotient morphisms, e.g. the property that all the fibres of $π$ are equidimensional. We also establish an analogue of the Hilbert-Mumford criterion for the null-cones with respect to $U'$-invariants.
The author determines the structure of automorphism groups of smooth plane curves of degree at least four. Furthermore, he gives some upper bounds for the order of automorphism groups of smooth plane curves and classifies the cases with large automorphism groups. This paper also contains a simple proof of the uniqueness of smooth plane curves with the full automorphism group of maximal order for each degree.
In this note we exhibit explicit automorphisms of maximal Salem degree 22 on the supersingular K3 surface of Artin invariant one for all primes p congruent 3 mod 4 in a systematic way. Automorphisms of Salem degree 22 do not lift to any characteristic zero model.
In this article we construct for any prime power $q$ and odd $n \ge 5$, a new $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$-maximal curve $\mathcal X_n$. Like the Garcia--G\" uneri--Stichtenoth maximal curves, our curves generalize the Giulietti--Korchmáros maximal curve, though in a different way. We compute the full automorphism group of $\mathcal X_n$, yielding that it has precisely $q(q^2-1)(q^n+1)$ automorphisms. Further, we show that unless $q=2$, the curve $\mathcal{X}_n$ is not a Galois subcover of the Hermitian curve. Finally, we find new values of the genus spectrum of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}}$-maximal curves, …
In this paper, we classify groups which faithfully act on smooth cubic threefolds. It turns out that there are exactly $6$ maximal ones and we describe them with explicit examples of target cubic threefolds.
We confirm, to some extent, the belief that a projective variety X has the largest number (relative to the dimension of X) of independent commuting automorphisms of positive entropy only when X is birational to a complex torus or a quotient of a torus. We also include an addendum to an early paper though it is not used in the present paper.
We prove that the subgroup of triangular automorphisms of the complex affine $n$-space is maximal among all solvable subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^n)$ for every $n$. In particular, it is a Borel subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^n)$, when the latter is viewed as an ind-group. In dimension two, we prove that the triangular subgroup is a maximal closed subgroup. Nevertheless, it is not maximal among all subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^2)$. Given an automorphism $f$ of $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, we study the question whether the group gene…
We study finite $p$-subgroups of birational automorphism groups. By virtue of boundedness theorem of Fano varieties, we prove that there exists a constant $R(n)$ such that a rationally connected variety of dimension $n$ over an algebraically closed field is rational if its birational automorphism group contains a $p$-subgroups of maximal rank for $p > R(n)$. Some related applications on Jordan property are discussed.
In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces with a non-large group of automorphisms of maximal order; namely, compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with a group of automorphisms of order $4g-4.$ Under the assumption that $g-1$ is prime, we provide a complete classification of them and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties.
For an automorphism group G on an n-dimensional (n > 2) normal projective variety or a compact Kähler manifold X so that G modulo its subgroup N(G) of null entropy elements is an abelian group of maximal rank n-1, we show that N(G) is virtually contained in Aut_0(X), the X is a quotient of a complex torus T and G is mostly descended from the symmetries on the torus T, provided that both X and the pair (X, G) are minimal.
For every integer $g \geq 1$ we define a universal Mumford curve of genus $g$ in the framework of Berkovich spaces over $\mathbb{Z}$. This is achieved in two steps: first, we build an analytic space $\mathcal{S}_g$ that parametrizes marked Schottky groups over all valued fields. We show that $\mathcal{S}_g$ is an open, connected analytic space over $\mathbb{Z}$. Then, we prove that the Schottky uniformization of a given curve behaves well with respect to the topology of $\mathcal{S}_g$, both locally and globally. As a result, we can define the universal Mumford curve $\mathcal{C}_g$ as a relat…
