We obtain a combinatorial formula for the Miller-Morita-Mumford classes for the mapping class group of punctured surfaces and prove Witten's conjecture that they are proportional to the dual to the Witten cycles. The proportionality constant is shown to be exactly as conjectured by Arbarello and Cornalba [J. Alg. Geom. 5 (1996) 705-749]. We also verify their conjectured formula for the leading coefficient of the polynomial expressing the Kontsevich cycles in terms of the Miller-Morita-Mumford classes.

We prove that group homology of the diffeomorphism group of $\#^g S^n \times S^n$ as a discrete group is independent of $g$ in a range, provided that $n>2$. This answers the high dimensional version of a question posed by Morita about surface diffeomorphism groups made discrete. The stable homology is isomorphic to the homology of a certain infinite loop space related to the Haefliger's classifying space of foliations. By analyzing how the Borel regulator classes vanish on various groups related to $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathrm{Z})$, we define three series of secondary characteristic classes for subgroups of automorphism groups of free groups. The first case is the $\mathrm{IA}$-automorphism groups and we show that our classes coincide with higher $\mathrm{FR}$ torsions due to Igusa. The second case is the mapping class groups and our classes also turn out to be his higher torsions which are non-zero multiples of the Mumford-Morita-Miller classes of even indices. For every compact surface $S$ of finite type (possibly with boundary components but without punctures), we show that when $n$ is sufficiently large there is no lift $σ$ of the surface braid group $B_n(S)$ to $\operatorname{Diff}(S,n)$, the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms preserving $n$ marked points and restricting to the identity on the boundary. Tautological classes, or generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, are basic characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles, and have recently been used to describe the rational cohomology of classifying spaces of diffeomorphism groups for several types of manifolds. We show that rationally tautological classes depend only on the underlying topological block bundle, and use this to prove the vanishing of tautological classes for many bundles with fibre an aspherical manifold.
Using certain Thom spectra appearing in the study of cobordism categories, we show that the odd half of the Miller-Morita-Mumford classes on the mappping class group of a surface with negative Euler characteristic vanish in integral cohomology when restricted to the handlebody subgroup. We prove vanishing results for the generalized Miller-Morita-Mumford classes of some smooth bundles whose fiber is a closed manifold that supports a nonpositively curved Riemannian metric. We also find, under some extra conditions, that the vertical tangent bundle is topologically rigid.
