Let $R=k[x_1, ..., x_n]/(x_1^d + ... + x_n^d)$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p$, $p$ does not divide $d$ and $n \geq 3$. We describe a method for computing the test ideal for these diagonal hypersurface rings. This method involves using a characterization of test ideals in Gorenstein rings as well as developing a way to compute tight closures of certain ideals despite the lack of a general algorithm. In addition, we compute examples of test ideals in diagonal hypersurface rings of small characteristic (relative to $d$) including several that are not integrally closed. These examples provide a negative answer to Smith's (2000, Comm. in Alg.) question of whether the test id eal in general is always integrally closed.
In this note, we derive a formula for the F-pure threshold of diagonal hypersurfaces over a perfect field of prime characteristic. We also calculate the associated test ideal at the F-pure threshold, and give formulas for higher jumping numbers of Fermat hypersurfaces.
In this paper we find the tight closure of powers of parameter ideals of certain diagonal hypersurface rings. In many cases the associated graded ring with respect to tight closure filtration turns out to be Cohen-Macaulay. This helps us find the tight Hilbert polynomial in these diagonal hypersurfaces. We determine the tight Hilbert polynomial in the following cases: (1) F-pure diagonal hypersurfaces where number of variables is equal to the degree of defining equation, (2) diagonal hypersurface rings where characteristic of the ring is one less than the degree of defining equation and (3) qu…
In the ring R=K[X,Y,Z]/(X^3+Y^3+Z^3), where K is a field of prime characteristic p other than 3, determining the tight closure of the ideal (X^2, Y^2, Z^2)R had existed as a classic example of the difficulty involved in tight closure computations. We settle this question, compute the Frobenius closure of this ideal, and generalize these results to the diagonal hypersurfaces K[X_1,...,X_n]/(X_1^n + ... + X_n^n).
This paper studies Ulrich ideals in hypersurface rings. A characterization of Ulrich ideals is given. Using the characterization, we construct a minimal free resolution of an Ulrich ideal concretely. We also explore Ulrich ideals in a hypersurface ring of the form R = k[[X, Y]]/(f).
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
Conca and Herzog proved that any product of ideals of linear forms in a polynomial ring has a linear resolution. The goal of this paper is to establish the same result for any quadric hypersurface. The main tool we develop and use is a flexible version of Derksen and Sidman's approximation systems.
We introduce a weak order ideal property that suffices for establishing the Evans-Griffith Syzygy Theorem. We study this weak order ideal property in settings that allow for comparison between homological algebra over a local ring $R$ versus a hypersurface ring $R/(x^n)$. Consequently we solve some relevant cases of the Evans-Griffith syzygy conjecture over local rings of unramified mixed characteristic $p$, with the case of syzygies of prime ideals of Cohen-Macaulay local rings of unramified mixed characteristic being noted. We reduce the remaining considerations to modules annihilated by $p^…
The main goal of this paper is to prove, in positive characteristic $p$, stability behavior for the graded Betti numbers in the periodic tails of the minimal resolutions of Frobenius powers of the homogeneous maximal ideals for very general choices of hypersurface in three variables whose degree has the opposite parity to that of $p$. We also find some of the structure of the matrix factorization giving the resolution. We achieve this by developing a method for obtaining the degrees of the generators of the defining ideal of an $\mathfrak{c}$-compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra from …
We introduce two families of ideals, $F$-jumping ideals and $F$-Jacobian ideals, in order to study the singularities of hypersurfaces in positive characteristic. Both families are defined using the $D$-modules $M_α$ that were introduced by Blickle, Mustaţă and Smith. Using strong connections between $F$-jumping ideals and generalized test ideals, we give a characterization of $F$-jumping numbers for hypersurfaces. Furthermore, we give an algorithm that determines whether certain numbers are $F$-jumping numbers. In addition, we use $F$-Jacobian ideals to study intrinsic properties of the singul…
As a generalization of the ideals of star configurations of hypersurfaces, we consider the $a$-fold product ideal $I_a(f_1^{m_1}\cdots f_s^{m_s})$ when ${f_1,\dots,f_s}$ is a sequence of generic forms and $1\le a\le m_1+\cdots+m_s$. Firstly, we show that this ideal has complete intersection quotients when these forms are of the same degree and essentially linear. Then we study its symbolic powers while focusing on the uniform case with $m_1=\cdots=m_s$. For large $a$, we describe its resurgence and symbolic defect. And for general $a$, we also investigate the corresponding invariants for meeti…
The Aluffi algebra is algebraic definition of characteristic cycles of a hypersurface in intersection theory. In this paper we focus on the Aluffi algebra of quasi-homogeneous and locally Eulerian hypersurface with isolated singularities. We prove that the Jacobian ideal of an affine hypersurfac with isolated singularities is of linear type if and only if it is locally Eulerian. We show that the gradient ideal of a projective hypersurface is of linear type if and only if the corresponding affine curve in the affine chart associated to singular points is locally Eulerian. We prove that the grad…
We introduce the class of sparse symmetric shifted monomial ideals. These ideals have linear quotients and their Betti numbers are computed. Using this, we prove that the symbolic powers of the generalized star configuration ideal are sequentially Cohen--Macaulay under some mild genericness assumption. With respect to these symbolic powers, we also consider the Harbourne--Huneke containment problem and establish the Demailly-like bound.
Let R be a formal power series ring over a perfect field k of prime characteristic p, and let m be the maximal ideal of R. Suppose f is a non-zero element in m. In this paper, we introduce a function xi (x) associated with a hypersurface defined on the closed interval [0, 1] in R. The Hilbert-Kunz function and the F-signature of a hypersurface appear as the values of our function xi (x) on the interval s endpoints.
In this paper, necessary and sufficient criteria for the Jacobian ideal of a reduced hypersurface with isolated singularity to be of linear type, are presented. We prove that the gradient ideal of a reduced projective plane curve with simple singularities ($\mathrm{ADE}$) is of linear type. We show that any reduced projective quartic curve is of gradient linear type.
For a reduced hypersurface $V(f) \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Milnor algebra $M(f)$ is well understood when $V(f)$ is smooth, as well as when $V(f)$ has isolated singularities. We study the regularity of $M(f)$ when $V(f)$ has a positive dimensional singular locus. In certain situations, we prove that the regularity is bounded by $(d-2)(n+1)$, which is the degree of the Hessian polynomial of $f$. However, this is not always the case, and we prove that in $\mathbb{P}^n$ the regularity of the Milnor algebra can grow quadratically in $d$.
Generalized diagonal matrices are matrices that have two ladders of entries that are zero in the upper right and bottom left corners. The minors of generic generalized diagonal matrices have square-free initial ideals. We give a description of the facets of their Stanley-Reisner complex. With this description, we characterize the configuration of ladders that yield Cohen-Macaulay ideals. In the special case where both ladders are triangles, we show that the corresponding complex is vertex decomposable. Also in this case, we compute the height and multiplicity of the ideals.
Using the minors in Hessian matrices, we introduce new graded algebras associated to a homogeneous polynomial. When the associated projective hypersurface has isolated singularities, these algebras are related to some new local algebras associated to isolated hypersurface singularities, which generalize their Tjurina algebras. One consequence of our results is a new way to determine the number of weighted homogeneous singularities of such a hypersurface.
Free divisors form a celebrated class of hypersurfaces which has been extensively studied in the past fifteen years. Our main goal is to introduce four new families of homogeneous free divisors and investigate central aspects of the blowup algebras of their Jacobian ideals. For instance, for all families the Rees algebra and its special fiber are shown to be Cohen-Macaulay -- a desirable feature in blowup algebra theory. Moreover, we raise the problem of when the analytic spread of the Jacobian ideal of a (not necessarily free) polynomial is maximal, and we characterize this property with tool…
There is a natural epimorphism from the symmetric algebra to the Rees algebra of an ideal. When this epimorphism is an isomorphism, we say that the ideal is of linear type. Given two determinantal rings over a field, we consider the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. We prove that the diagonal ideal is of linear type and recover the defining ideal of the Rees algebra in some special cases. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety.
Given two determinantal rings over a field k. We consider the Rees algebra of the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety. When the Rees algebra and the Symmetric algebra coincide, we show that the Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay.
We develop several techniques for the study of the radical ideal $I$ defining the diagonal locus of $(\C^2)^n$. Using these techniques, we give combinatorial construction of generators for $I$ of certain bi-degrees.
With a simple graph $G$ on $[n]$, we associate a binomial ideal $P_G$ generated by diagonal minors of an $n \times n$ matrix $X=(x_{ij})$ of variables. We show that for any graph $G$, $P_G$ is a prime complete intersection ideal and determine the divisor class group of $K[X]/ P_G$. By using these ideals, one may find a normal domain with free divisor class group of any given rank.
In the present paper, we prove that the toric ideals of certain $s$-block diagonal matching fields have quadratic Gröbner bases. Thus, in particular, those are quadratically generated. By using this result, we provide a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians.
We continue our study of F-thresholds begun in math/0607660 by an in depth analysis of the hypersurface case. We use the D--module theoretic description of generalized test ideals which allows us to show that in any F--finite regular ring the F-thresholds of hypersurfaces are discrete and rational (in math/0607660 the finite type over a field case was shown for arbitrary ideals). Furthermore we show that any limit of F-pure thresholds of principal ideals in bouneded dimension is again an F-pure-threshold, hence in particular the limit is rational. The study of the set of F-pure-thresholds lead…
We provide a formula for $F$-thresholds of a Thom-Sebastiani type polynomial over a perfect field of prime characteristic. This result extends the formula for the $F$-pure threshold of a diagonal hypersurface. We also compute the first test ideal of Thom-Sebastiani type polynomials. Finally, we apply our result to find hypersurfaces where the log canonical thresholds equals the $F$-pure thresholds for infinitely many prime numbers.

We exhibit a class of Hibi rings which are diagonally F-regular over fields of positive characteristic, and diagonally $F$-regular type over fields of characteristic zero, in the sense of Carvajal-Rojas and Smolkin. It follows that such Hibi rings satisfy the uniform symbolic topology property effectively in all characteristics. Namely, for rings $R$ in this class of Hibi rings, we have $P^{(dn)} \subseteq P^n$ for all $P \in \operatorname{Spec} R$, where $d = \dim(R)$. Further, we demonstrate that all Hibi rings over fields of positive characteristic are 2-diagonally $F$-regular, and that the…
Let $k$ be a field. For each pair of positive integers $(n,N)$, we resolve $Q=R/(x^N,y^N,z^N)$ as a module over the ring $R=k[x,y,z]/(x^n+y^n+z^n)$. Write $N$ in the form $N=a n+r$ for integers $a$ and $r$, with $r$ between $0$ and $n-1$. If $n$ does not divide $N$ and the characteristic of $k$ is fixed, then the value of $a$ determines whether $Q$ has finite or infinite projective dimension. If $Q$ has infinite projective dimension, then value of $r$, together with the parity of $a$, determines the periodic part of the infinite resolution. When $Q$ has infinite projective dimension we give an…
Let $G$ be a simple graph on the vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $m$ edges. An algebraic object attached to $G$ is the ideal $P_{G}$ generated by diagonal 2-minors of an $n \times n$ matrix of variables. In this paper we prove that if $G$ is bipartite, then every initial ideal of $P_{G}$ is generated by squarefree monomials of degree at most $\left \lfloor{\frac{m+n+1}{2}} \right \rfloor$. Furthermore, we completely characterize all connected graphs $G$ for which $P_{G}$ is the toric ideal associated to a finite simple graph. Finally we compute in certain cases the universal Gr{ö}bner basis o…
Analogues of Eakin-Sathaye theorem for reductions of ideals are proved for ${\mathbb N}^s$-graded good filtrations. These analogues yield bounds on joint reduction vectors for a family of ideals and reduction numbers for $\mathbb N$-graded filtrations. Several examples related to lex-segment ideals, contracted ideals in $2$-dimensional regular local rings and the filtration of integral and tight closures of powers of ideals in hypersurface rings are constructed to show effectiveness of these bounds.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Lindo and Pande have recently posed the question asking when every ideal of R is isomorphic to some trace ideal of R. This paper studies this question and gives several answers. In particular, a complete answer is given in the case where R is local: it is proved in this paper that every ideal of R is isomorphic to a trace ideal if and only if R is an artinian Gorenstein ring, or a 1-dimensional hypersurface with multiplicity at most 2, or a unique factorization domain.
The third named author and Pérez proved that under certain conditions the test ideal of a module closure agrees with the trace ideal of the module closure. We use this fact to compute the test ideals of various rings with respect to the closures coming from their indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. We also give an easier way to compute the test ideal of a hypersurface ring in 3 variables coming from a module with a particular type of matrix factorization.
We characterize the ideals $I$ of $\mathcal O_n$ of finite colength whose integral closure is equal to the integral closure of an ideal generated by pure monomials. This characterization, which is motivated by an inequality proven by Demailly and Pham, is given in terms of the log canonical threshold of $I$ and the sequence of mixed multiplicities of $I$.
The diagonal in a product of projective spaces is cut out by the ideal of 2x2-minors of a matrix of unknowns. The multigraded Hilbert scheme which classifies its degenerations has a unique Borel-fixed ideal. This Hilbert scheme is generally reducible, and its main component is a compactification of PGL(d)^n/PGL(d). For n=2 we recover the manifold of complete collineations. For projective lines we obtain a space of trees that is irreducible but singular. All ideals in our Hilbert scheme are radical. We also explore connections to affine buildings and Deligne schemes.
We study the properties of F-rationality and F-regularity in multigraded rings and their diagonal subalgebras. The main focus is on diagonal subalgebras of bigraded rings: these constitute an interesting class of rings since they arise naturally as homogeneous coordinate rings of blow-ups of projective varieties. As a consequence of some of the results obtained here, it is shown that there exist standard bigraded hypersurfaces whose rings of invariants under torus actions have rational singularities, but are not of F-regular type. Another application is the construction of families of rings wi…
Let $I$ be the ideal generated by alternating polynomials in two sets of $n$ variables. Haiman proved that the $q,t$-Catalan number is the Hilbert series of the graded vector space $M(=\bigoplus_{d_1,d_2}M_{d_1,d_2})$ spanned by a minimal set of generators for $I$. In this paper we give simple upper bounds on $\text{dim}M_{d_1, d_2}$ in terms of partition numbers, and find all bi-degrees $(d_1,d_2)$ such that $\dim M_{d_1, d_2}$ achieve the upper bounds. For such bi-degrees, we also find explicit bases for $M_{d_1, d_2}$. The main idea is to define and study a nontrivial linear map from $M$ to…
In this paper, we characterize the (generalized) Frobenius powers and critical exponents of two classes of monomial ideals of a polynomial ring in positive characteristic: powers of the homogeneous maximal ideal, and ideals generated by positive powers of the variables. In doing so, we effectively characterize the test ideals and $F$-jumping exponents of sufficiently general homogeneous polynomials, and of all diagonal polynomials. Our characterizations make these invariants computable, and show that they vary uniformly with the congruence class of the characteristic modulo a fixed integer. Mo…
Hara, Takemura and Yoshida discuss toric ideals arising from two way subtable sum problems and shows that these toric ideals are generated by quadratic binomials if and only if the subtables are either diagonal or triangular. In the present paper, we show that if the subtables are either diagonal or triangular, then their toric ideals possess quadratic Groebner bases.
We study algebraic and homological properties of the ideal of submaximal minors of a sparse generic symmetric matrix. This ideal is generated by all $(n-1)$-minors of a symmetric $n \times n$ matrix whose entries in the upper triangle are distinct variables or zeros and the zeros are only allowed at off-diagonal places. The surviving off-diagonal entries are encoded as a simple graph $G$ with $n$ vertices. We prove that the minimal free resolution of this ideal is obtained from the case without any zeros via a simple pruning procedure, extending methods of Boocher. This allows us to compute al…
