The Aluffi algebra is algebraic definition of characteristic cycles of a hypersurface in intersection theory. In this paper we focus on the Aluffi algebra of quasi-homogeneous and locally Eulerian hypersurface with isolated singularities. We prove that the Jacobian ideal of an affine hypersurfac with isolated singularities is of linear type if and only if it is locally Eulerian. We show that the gradient ideal of a projective hypersurface is of linear type if and only if the corresponding affine curve in the affine chart associated to singular points is locally Eulerian. We prove that the gradient ideal of the Nodal and Cuspidal projective plane curves are of linear type.
Generalizing the star graphs of Müller-Stach and Westrich, we describe a class of graphs whose associated graph hypersurface is equipped with a non-trivial torus action. For such graphs, we show that the Euler characteristic of the corresponding projective graph hypersurface complement is zero. In contrast, we also show that the Euler characteristic in question can take any integer value for a suitable graph. This disproves a conjecture of Aluffi in a strong sense.
We deal with the quasi-symmetric algebra introduced by Paolo Aluffi, here named (embedded) Aluffi algebra. The algebra is a sort of "intermediate" algebra between the symmetric algebra and the Rees algebra of an ideal, which serves the purpose of introducing the characteristic cycle of a hypersurface in intersection theory. The results described in the present paper have an algebraic flavor and naturally connect with various themes of commutative algebra, such as standard bases á la Hironaka, Artin--Rees like questions, Valabrega--Valla ideals, ideals of linear type, relation type and analytic…
A special class of algebras which are intermediate between the symmetric and the Rees algebras of an ideal was introduced by P. Aluffi in 2004 to define characteristic cycle of a hypersurface parallel to conormal cycle in intersection theory. These algebras are recently investigated by A. Nasrollah Nejad and A. Simis who named them Aluffi algebras. For a pair of ideals $J\subseteq I$ of a commutative ring $R$, the Aluffi algebra of $I/J$ is called Aluffi torsion-free if it is isomorphic to the Rees algebra of $I/J$. In this paper, ideals generated by 2-minors of a $2\times n$ matrix of linear …
A relation is proved between the Poincaré series of the coordinate algebra of a two-dimensional quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularity and the characteristic polynomial of its monodromy operator. For a Kleinian singularity not of type $A_{2n}$, this amounts to the statement that the Poincaré series is the quotient of the characteristic polynomial of the Coxeter element by the characteristic polynomial of the affine Coxeter element of the corresponding root system. We show that this result also follows from the McKay correspondence.
A topological interpretation of Hochster's Theta pairing of two modules on a hypersurface ring is given in terms of linking numbers. This generalizes results of M. Hochster and proves a conjecture of J. Steenbrink. As a corollary we get that the Theta pairing vanishes for isolated hypersurface singularities in an odd number of variables, as was conjectured by H. Dao.
Let $X$ be a nonsingular variety defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and $D$ be a free divisor with Jacobian ideal of linear type. We compute the Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along $D$ and compare it with the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the hypersurface complement. Our result establishes a conjecture by Aluffi raised in \cite{hyparr}.
In this note we provide a formula for the Tjurina number of a join of isolated hypersurface singularities in separated variables. From this we are able to provide a characterization of isolated hypersurface singularities whose difference between the Milnor and Tjurina numbers is less or equal than two arising as the join of isolated hypersurface singularities in separated variables. Also, we are able to provide new upper bounds for the quotient of Milnor and Tjurina numbers of certain join of isolated hypersurface singularities. Finally, we deduce an upper bound for the quotient of Milnor and …
In this paper we give a complete answer to a question posed by Dimca and Greuel about the quotient of the Milnor and Tjurina numbers of a plane curve singularity. We put this question into a general framework of the study of the difference of Milnor and Tjurina numbers for isolated complete intersection singularities showing its connection with other problems in singularity theory.
In this paper, we will show that the Hesselink stratification of a Hilbert scheme of hypersurfaces is independent of the choice of Plücker coordinate and there is a positive relation between the length of Hesselink's worst virtual 1-parameter subgroup and multiplicity of a projective hypersurface.
Let $(X,0)$ be an isolated hypersurface singularity defined by $ϕ\colon(\mathbb C^n,0)\to(\mathbb C,0)$ and $f\colon(\mathbb C^n,0)\to\mathbb C$ such that the Bruce-Roberts number $μ_{BR}(f,X)$ is finite. We first prove that $μ_{BR}(f,X)=μ(f)+μ(ϕ,f)+μ(X,0)-τ(X,0)$, where $μ$ and $τ$ are the Milnor and Tjurina numbers respectively of a function or an isolated complete intersection singularity. Second, we show that the logarithmic characteristic variety $LC(X,0)$ is Cohen-Macaulay. Both theorems generalize the results of a previous paper by some of the authors, in which the hypersurface $(X,0)$ …
We give a generalization of an algebraic formula of Gomez-Mont for the index of a vector field with isolated zero in (C^n,0) and tangent to an isolated hypersurface singularity. We only assume that the vector field has an isolated zero on the singularity.
A version of Kontsevich Formality theorem is proven for smooth DG algebras. As an application of this, it is proven that any quasiclassical datum of noncommutative unfolding of an isolated surface singularity can be quantized.
In this paper, necessary and sufficient criteria for the Jacobian ideal of a reduced hypersurface with isolated singularity to be of linear type, are presented. We prove that the gradient ideal of a reduced projective plane curve with simple singularities ($\mathrm{ADE}$) is of linear type. We show that any reduced projective quartic curve is of gradient linear type.
Given a nonconstant polynomial map over the reals having an isolated critical point in the origin and with zero locus of positive dimension, we establish a formula for the singular homology groups of a Milnor fibre relative to its boundary.
In this paper the singular hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^4$ of degree $d$ with an isolated singularity are studied. If the singularity is of type $A_{2k+1}$, under the condition $d<(k+5)/2$, a classification of such hypersurfaces upto homeomorphism (which is diffeomorphism on the nonsingular part) is obtained. As an application, cubic hypersurfaces with an $A_5$-singularity are constructed.
We introduce two generalizations of Newton-non-degenerate (Nnd) singularities of hypersurfaces. Roughly speaking, an isolated hypersurface singularity is called topologically Newton-non-degenerate (tNnd) if the local embedded topological singularity type can be restored from a collection of Newton diagrams (for some coordinate choices). A singularity that is not tNnd is called essentially Newton-degenerate. For plane curves we give an explicit characterization of tNnd singularities; for hypersurfaces we provide several examples. Next, we treat the question: whether Nnd or tNnd is a property of…
We associate to any irreducible germ S of complex quasi-ordinary hypersurface an analytically invariant semigroup. We deduce a direct proof (without passing through their embedded topological invariance) of the analytical invariance of the normalized characteristic exponents. These exponents generalize the generic Newton-Puiseux exponents of plane curves. Incidentally, we give a toric description of the normalization morphism of the germ S.
We study Serre duality in the singularity category of an isolated Gorenstein singularity and find an explicit formula for the duality pairing in terms of generalised fractions and residues. For hypersurfaces we recover the residue formula of the string theorists Kapustin and Li. These results are obtained from an explicit construction of complete injective resolutions of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.
We build two embedded resolution procedures of a quasi-ordinary singularity of complex analytic hypersurface, by using toric morphisms which depend only on the characteristic monomials associated to a quasi-ordinary projection of the singularity. This result answers an open problem of Lipman in Equisingularity and simultaneous resolution of singularities, Resolution of Singularities, Progress in Mathematics No. 181, 2000, 485-503. In the first procedure the singularity is embedded as hypersurface. In the second procedure, which is inspired by a work of Goldin and Teissier for plane curves (see…
In this note we give a simple proof of the following relative analog of the well known Milnor-Palamodov theorem: the Bruce-Roberts number of a function relative to an isolated hypersurface singularity is equal to its topological Milnor number (the rank of a certain relative (co)homology group) if and only if the hypersurface singularity is quasihomogeneous. The proof relies on an interpretation of the Bruce-Roberts number in terms of differential forms and the Lê-Greuel formula.
This paper studies hypersurface exceptional singularities in $\mathbb C^n$ defined by non-degenerate function. For each canonical hypersurface singularity, there exists a weighted homogeneous singularity such that the former is exceptional if and only if the latter is exceptional. So we study the weighted homogeneous case and prove that the number of weights of weighted homogeneous exceptional singularities are finite. Then we determine all exceptional singularities of the Brieskorn type of dimension 3.
It is well known that the exceptional set in a resolution of a rational surface singularity is a tree of rational curves. We generalize the combinatoric part of this statement to higher dimensions and show that the highest cohomologies of the dual complex associated to a resolution of an isolated rational singularity vanish. We also prove that the dual complex associated to a resolution of an isolated hypersurface singularity is simply connected. As a consequence, we show that the dual complex associated to a resolution of a 3-dimensional Gorenstein terminal singularity has the homotopy type o…
For a weighted quasihomogeneous two dimensional hypersurface singularity, we define a smoothing with unipotent monodromy and an isolated graded normal singularity. We study the natural weighted blow up of both the smoothing and the surface. In particular, we describe our construction for the quasihomogeneous singularities of type I, the 14 unimodal exceptional singularities and we relate it to their stable replacement.
We prove that certain roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial (i.e. b-function) are jumping coefficients up to a sign, showing a partial converse of a theorem of L. Ein, R. Lazarsfeld, K.E. Smith, and D. Varolin. We also prove that certain roots are determined by a filtration on the Milnor cohomology, generalizing a theorem of B. Malgrange in the isolated singularity case. This implies a certain relation with the spectrum which is determined by the Hodge filtration, because the above filtration is related to the pole order filtration. For multiplier ideals we prove an explicit formula in the ca…
We use our extension of the Noether-Lefschetz theorem to describe generators of the class groups at the local rings of singularities of very general hypersurfaces containing a fixed base locus. We give several applications, including (1) every subgroup of the class group of the completed local ring of a rational double point arises as the class group of such a singularity on a surface in complex projective 3-space and (2) every complete local ring arising from a normal hypersurface singularity over the complex numbers is the completion of a unique factorization domain of essentially finite typ…
Let M be a matrix whose entries are power series in several variables and determinant det(M) does not vanish identically. The equation det(M)=0 defines a hypersurface singularity and the (co)-kernel of M is a maximally Cohen-Macaulay module over the local ring of this singularity. Suppose the determinant det(M) is reducible, i.e. the hypersurface is locally reducible. A natural question is whether the matrix is equivalent to a block-diagonal or at least to an upper-block-triangular. (Or whether the corresponding module is decomposable or at least is an extension.) We give various necessary and…
For a complex algebraic variety $X$, we introduce higher $p$-Du Bois singularity by imposing canonical isomorphisms between the sheaves of Kähler differential forms $Ω_X^q$ and the shifted graded pieces of the Du Bois complex $\underlineΩ_X^q$ for $q\le p$. If $X$ is a reduced hypersurface, we show that higher $p$-Du~Bois singularity coincides with higher $p$-log canonical singularity, generalizing a well-known theorem for $p=0$. The assertion that $p$-log canonicity implies $p$-Du Bois has been proved by Mustata, Olano, Popa, and Witaszek quite recently as a corollary of two theorems assertin…
We enumerate complex algebraic hypersurfaces in $P^n$, of a given (high) degree with one singular point of a given singularity type. Our approach is to compute the (co)homology classes of the corresponding equi-singular strata in the parameter space of hypersurfaces. We suggest an inductive procedure, based on intersection theory combined with liftings and degenerations. The procedure computes the (co)homology class in question, whenever a given singularity type is properly defined and the stratum possesses good geometric properties. We consider in details the generalized Newton-non-degenerate…
In (Arnold, 1985), V.I. Arnold has obtained normal forms and has developed a classifier for, in particular, all isolated hypersurface singularities over the complex numbers up to modality 2. Building on a series of 105 theorems, this classifier determines the type of the given singularity. However, for positive modality, this does not fix the right equivalence class of the singularity, since the values of the moduli parameters are not specified. In this paper, we present a simple classification algorithm for isolated hypersurface singularities of corank and modality up to two. For a singularit…

This paper deals with the Nash problem, which consists in proving that the number of families of arcs on a singular germ of a surface $S$ coincides with the number of irreducible components of the exceptional divisor in the minimal resolution of this singularity. We propose a program for an affirmative solution of the Nash problem in the case of normal 2-dimensional hypersurface singularities. We illustrate this program by giving an affirmative solution of the Nash problem for the rational double point $\mathbf{E_6}$. We also prove some results on the algebraic structure of the space of $k$-je…
In this paper, we prove that the Milnor fibre of a singularity over an i.c.i.s. of dimension 3 has the homotopy type of a bouquet of spheres, provided that the function that defines the singularity has finite extended codimension with respect to the ideal that defines the i.c.i.s.
We consider geometrical problems on Gorenstein hypersurface orbifolds of dimension $n \geq 4$ through the theory of Hilbert scheme of group orbits. For a linear special group $G$ acting on $\CZ^n$, we study the $G$-Hilbert scheme, $\hl^G(\CZ^n)$, and crepant resolutions of $\CZ^n/G$ for $G$=the $A$-type abelian group $ A_r(n)$. For $n=4$, we obtain the explicit structure of $\hl^{A_r(4)}(\CZ^4)$. The crepant resolutions of $\CZ^4/A_r(4)$ are constructed through their relation with $\hl^{A_r(4)}(\CZ^4)$, and the connections between these crepant resolutions are found by the "flop" procedure of …
We introduce a Lie algebra of initial terms of logarithmic vector fields along a hypersurface singularity. Extending the formal structure theorem in [GS06, Thm. 5.4], we show that the completely reducible part of its linear projection lifts formally to a linear Lie algebra of logarithmic vector fields. For quasihomogeneous singularities, we prove convergence of this linearization. We relate our construction to the work of Hauser and M"uller [M"ul86, HM89] on Levi subgroups of automorphism groups of singularities, which proves convergence even for algebraic singularities. Based on the initial L…
We compute explicitly the limits of tangents of a quasi-ordinary singularity in terms of its special monomials. We show that the set of limits of tangents of Y is essentially a topological invariant of Y .
Using his deep and beautiful idea of cutting with a Hyperplane, Lefschetz explained how the homology groups of a projective smooth variety could be constructed from basic pieces, that he called primitive homology. This idea can be applied every time we have a vector space with a biliner form (i.e. homology with cup product) and a $\pm$-symmetric nilpotent operator (i.e. cutting with a hyperplane). We will illustrate this in the context of Singularity Theory: A germ of an isolated singular point of a hypersurface defined by $f=0$. We begin with the algebraic setting in the Jacobian (or Milnor) …
The aim of this fisrt part is to introduce, for a rather large class of hypersurface singularities with 1 dimensionnal locus, the analog of the Brieskorn lattice at the origin (the singular point of the singular locus). The main results are the finitness theorem for the corresponding (a,b)-module obtained via Kashiwara's constructibility theorem, and non torsion results for a plane curve singularity (not nessarily reduced) and for the suspension of such non torsion cases with an isolated singularity.
A question of B. Teissier, inspired by a previous problem of R. Thom, asks whether for any germ of complex analytic hypersurface there exists a germ of complex algebraic hypersurface with the same topological type. Up to now only the case of germs with an isolated singularity is kwown. In this article we answer in the affirmative the case 1-dimensional singular set, also for embedded topological types.
We give a complete classification of differential $\mathbb{Z}$-graded homotopy categories of matrix factorizations of isolated singularities up to quasi-equivalence. This answers a question of Bernhard Keller and Evgeny Shinder. More generally, we show that a quasi-equivalence between the dg singularity category of a Gorenstein isolated singularity $R$ and the dg singularity category of a complete local Noetherian $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $S$ of different Krull dimension can always be realized by Knörrer's periodicity -- in particular, the existence of such an equivalence implies that $R$ and $S$ …
We show in this note that for a germ $g$ of holomorphic function with an isolated singularity at the origin of $\mathbb{C}^n$ there is a pole for the meromorphic extension of the distribution \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{Γ(λ)} \int_X | g |^{2λ}\bar{g}^{-n} \square \tag{*} \end{equation*} at $- n - α$ when $ α$ is the smallest root in its class modulo $\mathbb{Z}$ of the reduce Bernstein-Sato polynomial of $g$. This is rather unexpected result comes from the fact that the self-duality of the Brieskorn (a,b)-module $E_g$ associated to $g$ exchanges the biggest simple pole sub-(a,b)-module of $E_g$…
We study the topology of a line singularity, which is a complex hypersurface with non-isolated singularity given by a complex line. We describe the degeneration of its Milnor fibre to the singular hypersurface by means of a pair of polyhedra, one in the Milnor fibre and other in the singular fibre, which are deformation retracts of the corresponding fibres; and a continuous map taking the Milnor fibre to the singular fibre and the first polyhedron to the second one, which restrict to a homeomorphism outside the polyhedra. In the same sense, we also study the topology of a complex isolated sing…
Mather and Yau showed that an isolated complex hypersurface singularity is completely determined by its moduli algebra. It is shown, for the simple elliptic singularities, how to construct continuous invariants from the moduli algebras and, hence, associate invariants to the singularities themselves.
In $L^2$ extension theorems from a singular hypersurface in a complex manifold, important roles are played by certain measures such as the Ohsawa measure which determine when a given function can be extended. We show that the singularity of the Ohsawa measure can be identified in terms of singularity of pairs from algebraic geometry. Using this, we give an analytic proof of the inversion of adjunction in this setting. Then these considerations enable us to compare various positive and negative results on $L^2$ extension from singular hypersurfaces. In particular, we generalize a recent negativ…
This is the first of a series of papers in which we systematically use singularity theory to study four dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories. Our main focus in this paper is to identify what kind of singularity is needed to define a SCFT. The constraint for a hypersurface singularity has been found by Sharpere and Vafa, and here the complete set of solutions are listed using a related mathematical result of Stephen S. T. Yau and Yu. We also study other type of singularities such as the complete intersection, quotient of hypersurface singularity by a finite group and non-isolated singu…
