Conca and Herzog proved that any product of ideals of linear forms in a polynomial ring has a linear resolution. The goal of this paper is to establish the same result for any quadric hypersurface. The main tool we develop and use is a flexible version of Derksen and Sidman's approximation systems.
Let $\Q_n \subset \mathbb P^{n+1}$ be a smooth quadric hypersurface. Here we prove that the tensor product of an $m$-Qregular sheaf on $\Q_n$ and an $l$-Qregular vector bundle on $\Q_n$ is $(m+l)$-Qregular.
Here we prove that the Hilbert-Kunz mulitiplicity of a quadric hypersurface of dimension $d$ and odd characteristic $p\geq 2d-4$ is bounded below by $1+m_d$, where $m_d$ is the $d^{th}$ coefficient in the expansion of $\mbox{sec}+\mbox{tan}$. This proves a part of the long standing conjecture of Watanabe-Yoshida. We also give an upper bound on the HK multiplicity of such a hypersurface. We approach the question using the HK density function and the classification of ACM bundles on the smooth quadrics via matrix factorizations.
Let $V$, $\tilde V$ be hypersurface germs in $\CC^m$, each having a quasi-homogeneous isolated singularity at the origin. We show that the biholomorphic equivalence problem for $V$, $\tilde V$ reduces to the linear equivalence problem for certain polynomials $P$, $\tilde P$ arising from the moduli algebras of $V$, $\tilde V$. The polynomials $P$, $\tilde P$ are completely determined by their quadratic and cubic terms, hence the biholomorphic equivalence problem for $V$, $\tilde V$ in fact reduces to the linear equivalence problem for pairs of quadratic and cubic forms.
Our purpose is to study the cohomological properties of the Rees algebras of a class of ideals generated by quadrics. For all such ideals $I\subset R = K[x,y,z]$ we give the precise value of depth $R[It]$ and decide whether the corresponding rational maps are birational. In the case of dimension $d \geq 3$, when $K=\mathbb{R}$, we give structure theorems for all ideals of codimension $d$ minimally generated by ${{d+1}\choose{2}}-1$ quadrics. For arbitrary fields $K$, we prove a polarized version.
Let $I$ be an ideal generated by quadrics in a standard graded polynomial ring $S$ over a field. A question of Avramov, Conca, and Iyengar asks whether the Betti numbers of $R = S/I$ over $S$ can be bounded above by binomial coefficients on the minimal number of generators of $I$ if $R$ is Koszul. This question has been answered affirmatively for Koszul algebras defined by three quadrics and Koszul almost complete intersections with any number of generators. We give a strong affirmative answer to the above question in the case of four quadrics by completely determining the Betti tables of heig…
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over an algebraic closed field $k$ and $ \mathfrak p =(x,y,z,w) $ a homogeneous height four prime ideal. We give a finite characterization of the degree two component of ideals primary to $\mathfrak p$, with multiplicity $e \leq 3$. We use this result to give a tight bound on the projective dimension of almost complete intersections generated by five quadrics with $e \leq 3$.
Motivated by Stillman's question, we show that the projective dimension of an ideal generated by four quadric forms in a polynomial ring is at most 6; moreover, this bound is tight. We achieve this bound, in part, by giving a characterization of the low degree generators of ideals primary to height three primes of multiplicities one and two.
We prove a sharp upper bound for the projective dimension of ideals of height two generated by quadrics in a polynomial ring with arbitrary large number of variables.
Let $K$ be a field and $X$, $Y$ denote matrices such that, the entries of $X$ are either indeterminates over $K$ or $0$ and the entries of $Y$ are indeterminates over $K$ which are different from those appearing in $X$. We consider ideals of the form $I_{1}(XY)$, which is the ideal generated by the $1\times 1$ minors of the matrix $XY$. We prove that the quotient ring $K[X, Y]/I_{1}(XY)$ admits an ASL structure for certain $X$ and $Y$.
Cut ideals are used in algebraic statistics to study statistical models defined by graphs. Intuitively, topological restrictions on the graphs should imply structural statements about the corresponding cut ideals. Several theorems and many computer calculations support that. Sturmfels and Sullivant conjectured that the cut ideal is generated by quadrics if and only if the graph is free of K4-minors. Parts of the conjecture has been resolved by Brennan and Chen, and later by Nagel and Petrovic. We prove the full conjecture by introducing a new type of toric fiber product theorem.
Let $K$ be a field and $X$, $Y$ denote matrices such that, the entries of $X$ are either indeterminates over $K$ or $0$ and the entries of $Y$ are indeterminates over $K$ which are different from those appearing in $X$. We consider ideals of the form $I_{1}(XY)$, which is the ideal generated by the homogeneous polynomials of degree $2$ given by the $1\times 1$ minors of the matrix $XY$. We prove that $d$-sequences and regular sequences arise naturally as part of generators of $I_{1}(XY)$ for some special cases. We use this information to calculate the equations defining the Rees algebra of $I_…
This paper studies Ulrich ideals in hypersurface rings. A characterization of Ulrich ideals is given. Using the characterization, we construct a minimal free resolution of an Ulrich ideal concretely. We also explore Ulrich ideals in a hypersurface ring of the form R = k[[X, Y]]/(f).
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We show that the toric ideal of a lattice path polymatroid is generated by quadrics corresponding to symmetric exchanges, and give a monomial order under which these quadrics form a Gröbner basis. We then obtain an analogous result for lattice path matroids.
In this paper we find the tight closure of powers of parameter ideals of certain diagonal hypersurface rings. In many cases the associated graded ring with respect to tight closure filtration turns out to be Cohen-Macaulay. This helps us find the tight Hilbert polynomial in these diagonal hypersurfaces. We determine the tight Hilbert polynomial in the following cases: (1) F-pure diagonal hypersurfaces where number of variables is equal to the degree of defining equation, (2) diagonal hypersurface rings where characteristic of the ring is one less than the degree of defining equation and (3) qu…
We introduce a weak order ideal property that suffices for establishing the Evans-Griffith Syzygy Theorem. We study this weak order ideal property in settings that allow for comparison between homological algebra over a local ring $R$ versus a hypersurface ring $R/(x^n)$. Consequently we solve some relevant cases of the Evans-Griffith syzygy conjecture over local rings of unramified mixed characteristic $p$, with the case of syzygies of prime ideals of Cohen-Macaulay local rings of unramified mixed characteristic being noted. We reduce the remaining considerations to modules annihilated by $p^…
Let $R=k[x_1, ..., x_n]/(x_1^d + ... + x_n^d)$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p$, $p$ does not divide $d$ and $n \geq 3$. We describe a method for computing the test ideal for these diagonal hypersurface rings. This method involves using a characterization of test ideals in Gorenstein rings as well as developing a way to compute tight closures of certain ideals despite the lack of a general algorithm. In addition, we compute examples of test ideals in diagonal hypersurface rings of small characteristic (relative to $d$) including several that are not integrally closed. These examples…
The homogenous ideals of curves in a double plane have been studied by Chiarli, Greco, Nagel. Completing this work we describe the equations of any curve that is contained in some quadric. As a consequence, we classify the Hartshorne-Rao modules of such curves.
Avramov, Conca, and Iyengar ask whether $β_i^S(R) \leq \binom{g}{i}$ for all $i$ when $R=S/I$ is a Koszul algebra minimally defined by $g$ quadrics. In recent work, we give an affirmative answer to this question when $g \leq 4$ by completely classifying the possible Betti tables of Koszul algebras defined by height-two ideals of four quadrics. Continuing this work, the current paper proves a structure theorem for Koszul algebras defined by four quadrics. We show that all these Koszul algebras are LG-quadratic, proving that an example of Conca of a Koszul algebra that is not LG-quadratic is min…
The main goal of this paper is to prove, in positive characteristic $p$, stability behavior for the graded Betti numbers in the periodic tails of the minimal resolutions of Frobenius powers of the homogeneous maximal ideals for very general choices of hypersurface in three variables whose degree has the opposite parity to that of $p$. We also find some of the structure of the matrix factorization giving the resolution. We achieve this by developing a method for obtaining the degrees of the generators of the defining ideal of an $\mathfrak{c}$-compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra from …
We introduce two families of ideals, $F$-jumping ideals and $F$-Jacobian ideals, in order to study the singularities of hypersurfaces in positive characteristic. Both families are defined using the $D$-modules $M_α$ that were introduced by Blickle, Mustaţă and Smith. Using strong connections between $F$-jumping ideals and generalized test ideals, we give a characterization of $F$-jumping numbers for hypersurfaces. Furthermore, we give an algorithm that determines whether certain numbers are $F$-jumping numbers. In addition, we use $F$-Jacobian ideals to study intrinsic properties of the singul…
Let $A$ be a noetherian Koszul Artin-Schelter regular algebra, and let $f\in A_2$ be a central regular element of $A$. The quotient algebra $A/(f)$ is usually called a (noncommutative) quadric hypersurface. In this paper, we use the Clifford deformation to study the quadric hypersurfaces obtained from the tensor products. We introduce a notion of simple graded isolated singularity and proved that, if $B/(g)$ is a simple graded isolated singularity of 0-type, then there is an equivalence of triangulated categories $\underline{\text{mcm}}\,A/(f)\cong\underline{\text{mcm}}\,(A\otimes B)/(f+g)$ of…
A subspace arrangement in a vector space is a finite collection of vector subspaces. Similarly, a configuration of linear spaces in a projective space is a finite collection of linear subspaces. In this paper we study the degree 2 part of the ideal of such objects. More precisely, for a generic configuration of linear spaces L we determine HF(L,2), i.e. the Hilbert function of L in degree 2.
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over any field $\Bbbk$, and let $P \subseteq S$ be a non-degenerate homogeneous prime ideal of height $h$. When $\Bbbk$ is algebraically closed, a classical result attributed to Castelnuovo establishes an upper bound on the number of linearly independent quadrics contained in $P$ which only depends on $h$. We significantly extend this result by proving that the number of minimal generators of $P$ in any degree $j$ can be bounded above by an explicit function that only depends on $j$ and $h$. In addition to providing a bound for generators in any degree $j$, not jus…
We investigate properties of Waring decompositions of real homogeneous forms. We study the moduli of real decompositions, so-called Space of Sums of Powers, naturally included in the Variety of Sums of Powers. Explicit results are obtained for quaternary quadrics, relating the algebraic boundary of ${\rm SSP}$ to various loci in the Hilbert scheme of four points in $\mathbb{P}^3$. Further, we study the locus of general real forms whose real rank coincides with the complex rank. In case of quaternary quadrics the boundary of this locus is a degree forty hypersurface $J(σ_3(v_3(\mathbb{P}^3)),τ(…
