A subspace arrangement in a vector space is a finite collection of vector subspaces. Similarly, a configuration of linear spaces in a projective space is a finite collection of linear subspaces. In this paper we study the degree 2 part of the ideal of such objects. More precisely, for a generic configuration of linear spaces L we determine HF(L,2), i.e. the Hilbert function of L in degree 2.
In these notes we show that any projective subspace arrangement can be realized as a generalized star configuration variety. This type of interpolation result may be useful in designing linear codes with prescribed codewords of minimum weight, as well as in answering a couple of questions asked by the author in previous work, about the number of equations needed to define a generalized star configuration.
In the present note we study configurations of codimension 2 flats in projective spaces and classify those with the smallest rate of growth of the initial sequence. Our work extends those of Bocci, Chiantini in P^2 and Janssen in P^3 to projective spaces of arbitrary dimension.

We investigate in this paper a generalization of Solomon-Terao formula for central equidimensional subspace arrangements. We introduce generalized Solomon-Terao functions based on the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the modules of multi-logarithmic forms and logarithmic multi-residues. We show that as in the case of hyperplane arrangements, these Solomon-Terao functions are polynomial. We then prove that if the Solomon-Terao polynomial of the modules of multi-residues satisfies a certain property, then this polynomial is related to the characteristic polynomial of the subspace arrangement. In parti…
We compute the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology ring of complements of complex coordinate subspace arrangements. The mixed Hodge structure can be described in terms of the special bigrading on the cohomology ring of complements of complex coordinate subspace arrangements. Originally this bigrading was introduced in the setting of toric topology by V.M. Buchstaber and T.E. Panov.
Church-Ellenberg-Farb used the language of FI-modules to prove that the cohomology of certain sequences of hyperplane arrangements with S_n-actions satisfies representation stability. Here we lift their results to the level of the arrangements themselves, and define when a collection of arrangements is "finitely generated". Using this notion we greatly widen the stability results to: 1) General linear subspace arrangements, not necessarily of hyperplanes. 2) A wide class of group actions, replacing FI by a general category C. We show that the cohomology of such collections of arrangements sati…
Homomorphic sensing is a recent algebraic-geometric framework that studies the unique recovery of points in a linear subspace from their images under a given collection of linear maps. It has been successful in interpreting such a recovery in the case of permutations composed by coordinate projections, an important instance in applications known as unlabeled sensing, which models data that are out of order and have missing values. In this paper, we provide tighter and simpler conditions that guarantee the unique recovery for the single-subspace case, extend the result to the case of a subspace…
We study the Hadamard product of the linear forms defining a hyperplane arrangement with those of its dual, which we view as generating an ideal in a certain polynomial ring. We use this ideal, which we call the ideal of pairs, to study logarithmic derivations and critical set varieties of arrangements in a way which is symmetric with respect to matroid duality. Our main result exhibits the variety of the ideal of pairs as a subspace arrangement whose components correspond to cyclic flats of the arrangement. As a corollary, we are able to give geometric explanations of some freeness and projec…
Waring's problem, of expressing an integer as the sum of powers, has a very long history going back to the 17th century, and the problem has been studied in many different contexts. In this paper we introduce the notion of a Waring subspace and a Waring identifiable subspace with respect to a projective algebraic variety $\mathcal X$. When $\mathcal X$ is the Veronese variety, these subspaces play a fundamental role in the theory of symmetric tensors and are related to the Waring decomposition and Waring identifiability of symmetric tensors (homogeneous polynomials). We give several constructi…
We construct a full exceptional collection consisting of vector bundles in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the so-called Cayley Grassmannian, the subvariety of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(3, 7)$ parameterizing 3-subspaces that are annihilated by a general 4-form. The main step in the proof of fullness is a construction of two self-dual vector bundles which is obtained from two operations with quadric bundles that might be interesting in themselves.
Let $\mathcal A\subset\mathbb P^{k-1}$ be a rank $k$ arrangement of $n$ hyperplanes, with the property that any $k$ of the defining linear forms are linearly independent (i.e., $\mathcal A$ is called $k-$generic). We show that for any $j=0,\ldots,k-2$, the subspace arrangement with defining ideal generated by the $(n-j)-$fold products of the defining linear forms of $\mathcal A$ is a set-theoretic complete intersection, which is equivalent to saying that star configurations have this property.
We study the moduli space of $d$-dimensional linear subspaces contained in a fixed $(d+1)$-dimensional linear variety $X$, and its tropicalization. We prove that these moduli spaces are linear subspaces themselves, and thus their tropicalization is completely determined by their associated (valuated) matroids. We show that these matroids can be interpreted as the matroid of lines of the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to $X$, and generically are equal to a Dilworth truncation of the free matroid. In this way, we can describe combinatorially tropicalized Fano schemes and tropicalizations o…
The Desale-Ramanan Theorem is an isomorphism between the moduli space of rank two vector bundles over complex hyperelliptic curve and the variety of linear subspaces in an intersection of two quadrics. We prove a real version of this theorem for the moduli space of real vector bundles over a real hyperelliptic curve. We then apply this result to study the topology of the moduli space, proving that it is relatively spin and identifying the diffeomorphism type for genus two curves. Our results lay the groundwork for future study of the quantum homology of these moduli spaces.
