This article studies the geometry of moduli spaces of G2-manifolds, associative cycles, coassociative cycles and deformed Donaldson-Thomas bundles. We introduce natural symmetric cubic tensors and differential forms on these moduli spaces. They correspond to Yukawa couplings and correlation functions in M-theory.
We expect that the Yukawa coupling characterizes (co-)associative fibrations on these manifolds. We discuss the Fourier transformation along such fibrations and the analog of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror conjecture for G2-manifolds.
We also discuss similar structures and transformations for Spin(7)-manifolds.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a super tangent bundle of a manifold, and extend the basic notions of differential geometry such as differential forms, exterior derivation, connection, metric and divergence on manifolds that equipped with a super tangent bundle.
It is well-known that the LIE(Locally Induction Equation) admit soliton-type solutions and same soliton solutions arise from different and apparently irrelevant physical models. By comparing the solitons of LIE and Killing magnetic geodesics, we observe that these solitons are essentially decided by two families of isometries of the domain and the target space respectively. With this insight, we propose the new concept of geometric solitons of Hamiltonian flows on manifolds, such as geometric Schrödinger flows and KdV flows for maps. Moreover, we give several examples of geometric solitons of …
We study a notion of pre-quantization for $b$-symplectic manifolds. We use it to construct a formal geometric quantization of $b$-symplectic manifolds equipped with Hamiltonian torus actions with nonzero modular weight. We show that these quantizations are finite dimensional $T$-modules.
A canonical connection is attached to any k-symplectic manifold. We study the properties of this connection and its geometric applications to k-symplectic manifolds. In particular we prove that, under some natural assumption, any ksymplectic manifold admits an Ehresmann connection, discussing some corollaries of this result, and we find vanishing theorems for characteristic classes on a k-symplectic manifold.
We study the problem of so-called geometric quantum confinement in a class of two-dimensional incomplete Riemannian manifold with metric of Grushin type. We employ a constant-fibre direct integral scheme, in combination with Weyl's analysis in each fibre, thus fully characterising the regimes of presence and absence of essential self-adjointness of the associated Laplace-Beltrami operator.
Given a compact symplectic manifold $M$, with integral symplectic form, we prequantize a certain class of functions on the path space for $M$. The functions in question are induced by functions on $M$. We apply our construction to study the symplectic structure on the solution space of Klein-Gordon equation.
We give a systematic derivation of the local expressions of the NS H-flux, geometric F- as well as non-geometric Q- and R-fluxes in terms of bivector beta- and two-form B-potentials including vielbeins. They are obtained using a supergeometric method on QP-manifolds by twist of the standard Courant algebroid on the generalized tangent space without flux. Bianchi identities of the fluxes are easily deduced. We extend the discussion to the case of the double space and present a formulation of T-duality in terms of canonical transformations between graded symplectic manifolds. Finally, the constr…
We construct several natural connections and Dirac type operators on a general metric contact manifold which are more sensitive to the geometric background. In the special case of CR manifolds these connections are also compatible with the CR structure and include among them the Webster connection. We also describe several Weitzenbock type formulae. Our method is based on work of P. Gauduchon applied to two almost complex manifolds naturally associated to a given metric contact manifold.
We give an intrinsic definition of (affine very) special real manifolds and realise any such manifold $M$ as a domain in affine space equipped with a metric which is the Hessian of a cubic polynomial. We prove that the tangent bundle $N=TM$ carries a canonical structure of (affine) special Kähler manifold. This gives an intrinsic description of the $r$-map as the map $M\mapsto N=TM$. On the physics side, this map corresponds to the dimensional reduction of rigid vector multiplets from 5 to 4 space-time dimensions. We generalise this construction to the case when $M$ is any Hessian manifold.
The group SL(2) acts on the space of cohomology groups of any hyper-Kahler manifold X. The χ_{y} genus of a hyper-Kahler X is shown to have a geometric interpretation as the super trace of an element of SL(2). As a by product one learns that the generalized Casson invariant for a mapping torus is essentially the χ_{y} genus.
We describe a new approach to the problem of constructing gluing parameterizations for open neighborhoods of boundary points of moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections over closed four-dimensional manifolds. Our approach employs general results from differential topology for $C^1$ maps of smooth Banach manifolds with corners, providing a method that should apply to other problems in geometric analysis involving the gluing construction of solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations.
In this paper we show that every three-dimensional closed hyperbolic manifold admits no locally geometric $1$-parameter family of closed minimal surfaces.
This article provides a pedagogically oriented introduction to geometric (Clifford) calculus on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Unlike usual approaches to the topic, which rely on embedding the geometric algebra either within a tensor algebra or within a vector manifold framework, here we define geometric calculus directly, by elementary methods. In particular we use an axiomatic approach that directly parallels textbook introductions to general relativity and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, so that no structure outside the metrical Clifford bundle of the manifold need be introduced. On this basis we…
Through the study of some elliptic and parabolic fully nonlinear PDEs, we establish conformal versions of quermassintegral inequality, the Sobolev inequality and the Moser-Trudinger inequality for the geometric quantities associated to the Schouten tensor on locally conformally flat manifolds.
We equip the direct limit of tangent bundles of paracompact finite dimensional manifolds with a structure of convenient vector bundle with structural group $GL(\infty,\mathbb{R}) =\underrightarrow{\lim}GL(\mathbb{R}^{n})$.
This is an exposition of the Donaldson geometric flow on the space of symplectic forms on a closed smooth four-manifold, representing a fixed cohomology class. The original work appeared in [1].
We show any Riemannian curvature model can be geometrically realized by a manifold with constant scalar curvature. We also show that any pseudo-Hermitian curvature model, para-Hermitian curvature model, hyper-pseudo-Hermitian curvature model, or hyper-para-Hermitian curvature model can be realized by a manifold with constant scalar and *-scalar curvature.
We study the geometric quantization process for twisted Poisson manifolds. First, we introduce the notion of Lichnerowicz-twisted Poisson cohomology for twisted Poisson manifolds and we use it in order to characterize their prequantization bundles and to establish their prequantization condition. Next, we introduce a polarization and we discuss the quantization problem. In each step, several examples are presented.
We discuss the question of geometric formality for rationally elliptic manifolds of dimension $6$ and $7$. We prove that a geometrically formal six-dimensional biquotient with $b_{2}=3$ has the real cohomology of a symmetric space. We also show that a rationally hyperbolic six-dimensional manifold with $b_2\leq 2$ and $b_3=0$ can not be geometrically formal. As it follows from their real homotopy classification, the seven-dimensional geometrically formal rationally elliptic manifolds have the real cohomology of symmetric spaces as well.
We obtain an Euclidean volume growth results for complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying a Euclidean Sobolev inequality and a spectral type condition on the Ricci curvature. We also obtain eigenvalue estimates, heat kernel estimates, Betti number estimates for closed manifolds whose Ricci curvature is controlled in the Kato class.
The covariant derivative of the Kähler form of an almost pseudo-Hermitian or of an almost para-Hermitian manifold satisfies certain algebraic relations. We show, conversely, that any 3-tensor which satisfies these algebraic relations can be realized geometrically.
In this survey article, we discuss some recent progress on geometric analysis on manifold with ends. In the final section, we construct manifolds with ends with oscillating volume functions which may turn out to have a different heat kernel estimates from those provided by known results.
In the first part of this paper we study geometric formality for generalized flag manifolds, including full flag manifolds of exceptional Lie groups. In the second part we deal with the problem of the classification of invariant almost complex structures on generalized flag manifolds using topological methods.
We prove that the compact Kaehler manifolds with first Chern class nonnegative that admit holomorphic parabolic geometries are the flat bundles of rational homogeneous varieties over complex tori. We also prove that the compact Kaehler manifolds with negative first Chern class that admit holomorphic cominiscule geometries are the locally Hermitian symmetric varieties.
We define a class of geometric flows on a complete Kähler manifold to unify some physical and mechanical models such as the motion equations of vortex filament, complex-valued mKdV equations, derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations etc. Furthermore, we consider the existence for these flows from $S^1$ into a complete Kähler manifold and prove some local and global existence results.
In information geometry, one of the basic problem is to study the geomet-ric properties of statistical manifold. In this paper, we study the geometricstructure of the generalized normal distribution manifold and show that it has constant α-Gaussian curvature. Then for any positive integerp, we con-struct ap-dimensional statistical manifold that is α-flat.
The closure conditions of the inexact exterior differential form and dual form (an equality to zero of differentials of these forms) can be treated as a definition of some differential-geometrical structure. Such a connection discloses the properties and specific features of the differential-geometrical structures. The using of skew-symmetric differential forms enables one to reveal a mechanism of forming differential-geometrical structures as well. To do this, it is necessary to consider the skew-symmetric differential forms whose basis, unlike to the case of exterior differential forms, are …
We study the geometry of compact Lorentzian manifolds that admit a somewhere timelike Killing vector field, and whose isometry group has infinitely many connected components. Up to a finite cover, such manifolds are products (or amalgamated products) of a flat Lorentzian torus and a compact Riemannian (resp., lightlike) manifold.
We study a class of fourth order geometric equations defined on a 4-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold which includes the Q-curvature equation. We obtain sharp estimates on the difference near the blow-up points between a bubbling sequence of solutions and the standard bubble.
We derive one unified formula for Ricci curvature tensor on arbitrary warped product manifold by introducing a new notation for the lift vector and the Levi-Civita connection. This formula is helpful to further consider Ricci flow (RF) and hyperbolic geometric flow (HGF) and evolution equations on warped product manifold. We characterize the behavior of warping function under RF and under HGF. Simultaneously, we give some simple examples to illustrate the existence of such warping function solution. In addition, we also gain the evolution equations for metrics and Ricci curvature on a general w…
The continuity, in a suitable topology, of algebraic and geometric operations on real analytic manifolds and vector bundles is proved. This is carried out using recently arrived at seminorms for the real analytic topology. A new characterisation of the topology of the space of real analytic mappings between manifolds is also developed. To characterise these topologies, geometric decompositions of various jet bundles are given by use of connections. These decompositions are then used to characterise many of the standard operations from differential geometry: algebraic operations, tensor evaluat…
We classify $n$-dimensional geometric graph manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, and first show that if $n>3$, the universal cover splits off a codimension 3 Euclidean factor. We then proceed with the classification of the 3-dimensional case by showing that such a manifold is either a lens space or a prism manifold with a very rigid metric. This allows us to also classify the moduli space of such metrics: it has infinitely many connected components for lens spaces, while it is connected for prism manifolds.
Some model reduction techniques for multiple time-scale dynamical systems make use of the identification of low dimensional slow invariant attracting manifolds (SIAM) in order to reduce the dimensionality of the phase space by restriction to the slow flow. The focus of this work is on a proposition and discussion of a general viewpoint using differential geometric concepts for submanifolds to deal with slow invariant manifolds in an extended phase space. The motivation is a coordinate independent formulation of the manifold properties and its characterization problem treating the manifold as i…
We point out a new view on slow invariant manifolds (SIM) in dynamical systems which departs from a purely geometric covariant characterization implying coordinate independency. The fundamental idea is to treat the SIM as a well-defined geometric object in phase space and elucidate characterizing geometric properties that can be evaluated as point-wise analytic criteria. For that purpose, we exploit curvature concepts and formulate our recent variational approach in terms of coordinate-independent Hamiltonian mechanics. Finally, we combine both approaches and conjecture a differential geometric…
We prove a Schwarz-type lemma for noncompact manifolds with possibly noncompact boundary. The result is a consequence of a suitable form of the weak maximum principle of independent interest. The paper is enriched with applications to conformal deformations of noncompact manifolds with boundary, among them a generalization of a classical result by Escobar.
We study two kinds of transformation groups of a compact locally conformally Kahler (l.c.K.) manifold. First we study compact l.c.K. manifolds with parallel Lee form by means of the existence of a holomorphic l.c.K. flow. Next, we introduce the Lee-Cauchy-Riemann (LCR) transformations as a class of diffeomorphisms preserving the specific G-structure of l.c.K. manifolds. We show that compact l.c.K. manifolds admitting a non-compact CC^* flow of LCR transformations are rigid: it is holomorphically conformal to a Hopf manifold with parallel Lee form.
We define geometric zeta functions for locally symmetric spaces as generalizations of the zeta functions of Ruelle and Selberg. As a special value at zero we obtain the Reidemeister torsion of the manifold. For hermitian spaces these zeta functions have as special value the quotient of the holomorphic torsion of Ray and Singer and the holomorphic $L^2$-torsion, where the latter is defined via the $L^2$-theory of Atiyah. For higher fundamental rank twisted torsion numbers appear.
We generalize Bonahon's characterization of geometrically infinite torsion-free discrete subgroups of PSL(2, $\mathbb{C}$) to geometrically infinite discrete isometry subgroups in the case of rank 1 symmetric spaces, and, under the assumption of bounded torsion, to the case of negatively pinched Hadamard manifolds. Every such geometrically infinite isometry subgroup $Γ$ has a set of nonconical limit points with cardinality of continuum.
Extrinsic Geometric Flow (EGF) for a codimension-one foliation has been recently introduced by authors as deformations of Riemannian metrics subject to quantities expressed in terms of its second fundamental form. In the paper we introduce soliton solutions to EGF and study their geometry for totally umbilical foliations, foliations on surfaces, and when the EGF is produced by the extrinsic Ricci tensor.
In this paper, we define a class of new geometric flows on a complete Riemannian manifold. The new flow is related to the generalized (third order) Landau-Lifishitz equation. On the other hand it could be thought of a special case of the Schrödinger-Airy flow when the target manifold is a Kähler manifold with constant holomorphic sectional curvature. We show the local existence of the new flow on a complete Riemannian manifold with some assumptions on Ricci tensor. Moreover, if the target manifolds are Einstein or some certain type of locally symmetric spaces, we obtain the global results.
We apply an equivariant version of Perelman's Ricci flow with surgery to study smooth actions by finite groups on closed 3-manifolds. Our main result is that such actions on elliptic and hyperbolic 3-manifolds are conjugate to isometric actions. Combining our results with results by Meeks and Scott [17], it follows that such actions on geometric 3-manifolds (in the sense of Thurston) are always geometric, i.e. there exist invariant locally homogeneous Riemannian metrics. This answers a question posed by Thurston in [32].
This is a continuation of a previous paper of same title. The degeneration, i.e. curvature blow-up, of sequences of metrics appoaching the Sigma constant, assumed non-positive, is analysed. The degeneration is related to the sphere decomposition of the 3-manifold M, in case M is sigma-tame.
This paper analyses the convergence and degeneration of sequences of metrics on a 3-manifold, and relations of such with Thurston's geometrization conjecture. The sequences are minimizing sequences for a certain (optimal) scalar-curvature type functional and their degeneration is related to the sphere and torus decompositions of the 3-manifold under certain conditions.
